No you can't. Given that it's a Dell and it came with Windows XP pre-installed, it's an OEM of Windows version.  The biggest drawback of an OEM version (at least in the USA) is that its license it permanently binds to the computer first it is installed on. He can never legally be moved to another computer, sold, or given to outside (except with the original computer). If the computer dies or is stolen, your license dies with him.

And let me ask you as if you checked to make sure everything on the Dell is compatible with Windows 7, and there are Windows 7 drivers for all your hardware that requires it.

  • How can I fix "Windows did not start because of...» »

"Windows did not start due to a problem in the disk of the computer configuration."

I have re-installed windows XP on my laptop using my USB because the laptop doesn't have a CD player. I used "WinToFlash" which allowed me to convert my installation CD to run on my USB. But no matter what I do I can't fix it. I am very good with computers but I have never encountered this problem. I can not re - install using my USB again because I get the error, and I can't boot the PC because I get the error. When I press a key it just restarts... Any help? Please?

If you can boot into the BIOS screen, check if the USB is given as a choice of boot.  Do as the first in the boot order.

Also this BIOS is set by default and if not go back to the default settings (see the owner's manual I don't know what computer you have)

  • I can't stop Windows via the Start Menu

    Original title: Shutdown, problem

My laptop Dell Inspiron (64-bit) with Windows 7 is to have close questions. Since yesterday, when I click on stop in the start menu, nothing happens. It's as if I never clicked on stop at all. The same happens when I click on restart or any other shutdown/logoff options. The only way I can get it to stop is if I press the power button, but when I turn it on again, instead of saying "Starting Windows", he said "Resuming Windows". I ran a few virus scans and it doesn't seem to be a problem here. I don't know what else to do.

Run the SFC/scannow command. This will check and repair if necessary all of the critical Windows system files.

Click on start / all programs/accessories then
Right-click on the command prompt option and select "Run as Administrator".

  • How can I stop Windows Messenger from starting automatically

I have never used Windows Messenger.  I recently bought / implement a system refurbished with XP Home - after about a month of use, the Herald began popping up automatically whenever I start the machine, or when I open Outlook Express (and immediately requires a screen name access code (whenever it starts, even if I gave him once to satisfy) (, so I have two things to cancel).

As I say, he began to do this by himself without conscious action on my part, a few weeks after the introduction of the machine. I had an older XP machine for 6 years and never seen it happen.

Two questions: 1) is this a normal behavior to require a name to screen EACH time it starts? I would have thought that it would save one associated with the connection.

    (2) how can I do to stop the automatic aperture? I don't necessarily want to kill-I can actually try to use it someday. I just that it quietly hide in the system tray, as it has always done before.

To stop the Messenger to start with Windows:

    (1) right-click on the Windows Messenger icon in the system tray.
    2) click Open.
    (3) in Windows Messenger, click on tools, then click Options.
    4) click the Preferences tab.
    (5) in the preferences, uncheck the "run Windows Messenger when Windows starts" and "Allow Windows Messenger to run in the background", and then click Ok.

To prevent Outlook Express from loading Messenger

    (1) open Outlook Express
    2) click Tools, Options
    3) click on general tab
    (4) uncheck the box to automatically log on to Windows Messenger
    5) click OK Microsoft Security MVP, 2004-2009

    Hi Dippity,

In C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, find and delete the content (but not the folders themselves) recordsONLY the following two: downloads and the data store.

And what CAN help solve the problem if it is caused by an update incomplete or stuck - but it is not guaranteed to solve the problem of update because at this point we really don't know the cause. It is a cause, and there are others that this procedure allows to solve.

If this does not work, try this: click Start > run > paste the following command into the Run dialog box, and then press ENTER. Wait for the success message.

    % SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32. EXE, % SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\WUAUENG. DLL

  • How can I configure the computers to stop at a specific time

Hello good people, I work as a computer technician and my manager asked me to find a way to activate the computers in our offices off at 12:00 for example automatically. How can I do this and it is possibel to define computers to start automatically at the precise moment

Say you Manager is probably not a good idea (according to tricky300).

Of course - you can make it work and you can force it to work (at least the part of the judgment), but someday someone will lose their data or it stops while they are in the middle of something (assuming that people could work at 12:00) and they are going to be angry with the one that came with and implemented this idea (which would probably be you - not your manager).

You can make your computer wake up at a certain time, if the system supports such an option (not all systems are supported this option to wake up at a certain time).  Or, as tricky300 said, you can use WOL (Wake On Lan), but not all systems support this option either and someone in your IT Department will have to get there.

I would like to ask the manager what is the particular problem, trying to solve and to get a good understanding of the problems, explain the pitfalls of the demi-cuite idea and come up with some other ideas that do not threaten for the work that employees could work on and something that will work for all your systems.

  • In Windows 7 Action Center, MSE, and Windows Defender convertible 'ON' at the same time?

In the center of Action of Windows 7, Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is enabled.  I tried to turn on Windows Defender 'manually' and get a status of "OFF"OBSOLETE"? that quickly toggles back and forth

I'm trying to maximize my options "malicious."  I have NOT tried turning 'OFF' MSE to see if Windows Defender will be 'ON '.

My real question is, can MSE and Windows Defender, being 'ON' at the same time or are mutually?

A "full scan" using MSE detected the following malicious program "trojan:Win32 / Tracur.AV". I immediately deleted it. I think it's GONE!

My "quick" weekly scans did not detect this malware. What a scare on my new laptop TOSHIBA P750.

Now I take the time 'always' do a full scan.

    Help

    Hello

    Welcome to the Microsoft community.

If you use Microsoft Security Essentials, there is no need to use Windows Defender. You can disable that and just let Microsoft Security Essentials run things.

You should only use an antivirus program. using several programs at the same time will cause problems.

    Please refer to this link:

    http://answers.Microsoft.com/en-us/protect/Forum/MSE-protect_start/Windows-Defender-and-Microsoft-Security-Essentials/5309cb8d-02e1-40E8-974f-0dcedb9ab9fd

    It will be useful.

  • How can I configure my computer stops at a specific time?

I know that I can set up Parental controls for other users, but I would like to be able to set a time limit so that the computer turns off. Is this possible?

Thank you for your helpful suggestions.

    Loretta

You can create a scheduled task that runs at a specific time every day. Its command line would be like this:

    stop, s, f, t 300
The command will generate a group of pop up at the specified time, and then shut the computer down to 300 seconds (= 5 minutes) later. For information about how to create a scheduled task, click Start, click Help, then look for help on the scheduled task. When you create the task, make sure that it is running under the account 'System '. Initially, you must specify a time of 15 minutes now so that you can test the task shortly after it is created.
If you find it intimidating to create a scheduled task then here is a simpler method:
1 log in under an administrator account.
    2. click on the start planet.
    3. type the three letters cmd in the search box.
    4. press on Ctrl + Shift + Enter
    5. click on "run as Administrator".
    6. type the following commands and press ENTER after each:
    -22:00 / every: m, t, w, e, f, s, su shutdown.exe/s/f/t 300
(to create the task described above. It will take place at 22:00).
    to
(to see a list of all jobs created with this method)
    1/led
    (To remove the job #1).
  • Windows XP does not start. Can I boot Windows from a disk so that I can recover the data?

Windows XP does not start. Can I boot Windows from a disk so that I can recover the data? This should be a CD because it doesn't have a floppy disk on my laptop drive. It is maybe that my hard drive has begun to fail and therefore cannot locate XP startup files. I can not start using one of the other methods of starting for example. Safe mode. If I can recover the data, I can then reload Windows and check the surface of the disc etc etc. Thank you all for your comments. Steve

Lately, I'm leaning toward the Hiren's BootCD you can download here:

    http://www.hirensbootcd.NET/

On the left, click on download, scroll down, choose the most recent version

The download link is a little hard to see.  It is at the bottom of the page, above the drop for older versions and looks like this (click this component to download the ZIP file):

Direct HTTP mirror + Torrent, Torrent Magnet

Click the "Live HTTP Mirror" link to start the download and save the ZIP file on your desktop of somewhere that you can remember.

The ZIP file is large, so the download will take probably some time to complete.  Then unzip the download to extract theHirens.BootCD.ISO file that will be used to create your new bootable CD.

Create a bootable CD. ISO file is not the same as simply copying the. File ISO onto a blank CD.  You must use software that includes how to burn a. ISO to a CD to create a bootable CD.

File ZIP the Hiren is the file BurnToCD.cmd that you can double-click to launch it.  The BurnToCD.cmd will use the file BurnCDCC.exe to burn the. ISO file onto a blank CD using your existing CD burner.  You can also use your own burning software as long as your software is able to create a bootable CD. ISO file.  More modern burning programs can create a bootable CD. ISO image.  Create a CD from an ISO image bootable is not the same as just the file on a CD burning.

If you need a simple and CD burning, this is a free software popular software:

    http://www.ImgBurn.com/

Here are some instructions for ImgBurn:

    http://Forum.ImgBurn.com/index.php?showtopic=61

It would be a good idea to test your new bootable CD on a computer running.

You may need to adjust the computer BIOS settings to use the CD-ROM drive as the first device to boot instead of the hard drive.
These adjustments are made before Windows tries to load.  If you miss it, you will need to restart the system again.

When starting on the Hiren's CD, you will see a menu of options.  Choose Mini XP.

It will appear while Windows is loading and you will be presented with a desktop computer that has the look and feel of the interface of Windows Explorer, you are already accustomed to using.  You will feel at home.

Using the Mini XP, you can access the Internet, maneuver around your system, copy files, replace the files, run the scans for malware, etc.  There are dozens of free and useful tools included in the CD that can be used to repair your system, or copy files to another device such as a USB device or an external drive if drop in trying to repair your system.

If you want to see if you can fix your system, describe what is happening when you try to start and to answer these questions:

What is your system brand and model?

What is your Version of XP and the Service Pack?

Describe your current antivirus and software anti malware situation: McAfee, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, MSE, Comodo, etc..

You have a true bootable XP installation CD (it is not the same as any recovery CD provided with your system)?
