Can I put Windows 7 on a Dell Dimension 4600?

Hello

I have a 6 years old Dell Dimension 4600 PC with the following specifications:

  • Processor Pentium 4 3.0Ghz
  • 1 GB OF RAM
  • nVidia Geforce FX5200 128 MB graphics card
  • Windows XP Home Edition
I expect to make a custom on this old PC Setup, but my problems are with the drivers.
I recently used the special Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, which tells me that I meet all of the minimum requirements, and of course programs such as Outlook Express will not available on Windows 7.
In the middle of this report is a link to the Dell (Windows 7 section) website where they tell me to go learn more about compatibility. When I do click on this site and then click on hardware compatibility, it brings me to the next page: http://support.euro.dell.com/support/topics/topic.aspx/emea/shared/support/dsn/en/document?c=uk&docid=360683&l=en&s=gen
The page says there is apparently only ONE socket support Dell Dimension model which can be improved on the range Dimension, covering a good 30-50 models. I'm sure that this is due to support driver from Dell, which is absolutely horrendous. The drivers on the site range Dell Web from 2004 to 2007 (for the only critical updates), for my model. The only OS supported on the site it is XP. Research on the Web sites of manufacturers of drivers, I find that the newer drivers are available for my hardware, more compatible with Vista. Do I have the old OEM from Dell specific drivers or the drivers provided by manufacturers! Can I REALLY move to Windows 7! Dell said it is not supported (and is fast enough to give me a link telling me to buy a new PC), but I have friends who have installed on other Dimensions of Dell old where it worked a treat. I don't want to lose £70 on a BONE that may not work and may leave me without a usable PC!
What should I do!

Hi Fred

Not taken in charge and is not possible are 2 different things.

How you proceed depends on how comfortable you are troubleshooting. It is very likely that you will end up you are looking for a few drivers for hardware on the sites of manufacturers or possibly replace certain hardware devices that are simply too old to work.

Windows 7 includes many of the compatibility of the tools that can help when you use the devices more old drivers/hardware and software troubleshooting.

If the Upgrade Advisor did not identify hard incompatible devices, I would say you should go try before the upgrade. Make sure you have all the latest drivers for the hardware installed and available on external media.

If you have any problems, come back here and start the new thread, we are here to help.

Kind regards

Thank you for using Windows 7 Ronnie Vernon MVP

I was looking for a video driver for Windows 7 with no luck.  The I need for the computer is a Dell Dimension 4600 with integrated video.  When I tried the Dell Web site, they show only a driver for XP, because I'm assuming that it was the only BONE the 4600 can run without its standard equipment.  The RAM has been improved to 1.75 GB, so 7 will run on it without any problem, but the only screen resolution that works is 640 x 480.  I tried to go into the advanced settings, the list of all the screen modes, but when I select a higher resolution, reduce it, maximize, and close buttons go black and parts of the screen are becoming blurred.  I tried two different monitors, so I'm sure I just need a driver.  I can't find one that fits.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!!!

Call Dell and ask if the driver you need exist. If they tell you
they did not create, you're out of luck.

Any suggestions? And Yes, I know this is probably not the most cost-effective method to get a more powerful computer, but this is my best option.

The Dimension 4600 supports up to 4 GB (4 x 1 GB modules) RAM DDR, but can only send 3 gb - + of it due to the 32-bit operating system:

Also, if you use the 4600 for browsing the internet, the better to replace XP with a system of operating most recent such Win 7.

You can "downgrade" to win 7 BUT dependent on the Lim, it may void your warranty and there is perhaps no drivers for your computer with windows 7.

Putting aside the modern splash screen (which you can ignore at startup) win 7 and win 8 are very similar.  If you don't like the modern user interface, you don't need to use it.

  • Problem activating Windows XP Pro on a Dell Dimension 4600, which originally had XP Home

I have some difficulty to activate MY PERSONALLY PURCHASED VERSION of Windows XP Pro on a Dell Dimension 4600 workstation that initially provided with XP Home.  I have TWO Codes of 25 character key true = 1 The printed on the sticker on the computer AND the one supplied with the disk I bought for my laptop that was stolen last week.  I entered two key during the windows process codes activate and they the system tells me invalid or incorrect product key code.  I WAS talking with a Microsoft Tech Rep on the phone trying to solve this problem and has been disconnected when put on "Hold" and now cannot get through to a real person again.  CAN SOMEONE ' ONE/SOMEONE' HELP ME PLEASE?

    Hello

Both your XP, the laptop and the Dell operating systems will have been oem licenses. OEM licenses are tied to the computer that they were originally installed on. In regards to the Pro license you can see in your report where is says Windows license Type: OEM System Builder.

The only XP version that can be legally charged to your Dimension is one that has been provided with it by Dell, i.e. the XP Home license.

activation of character for home 25 codes do not work with the Pro, the reverse is also true.

  • Poor resolution on my monitor after installation Wondows - 7 Ultimate in my Dell Dimension 4600

I installed Windows 7 Ultimate on my Dell Dimension 4600 af ew days ago.  I remember buying the computer at least 6 years ago.  Now my computer does not recognize that my monitor flat screen default PnP monitor and I have very low resolution.  I have a small publishing company and monitor high resolution is critical for my needs.

I changed the cable blue from my PC to the monitor and also changed the screen (I have other PC at home).  But the problem remains

When I went on the Dell site and punch in my Service tag number for my PC, it shows that the PC has only the XP operating system and does not show the new operating system I installed, namely Windows 7 Ultimate.

Dell people tell me that my PC has a system of factory-installed XP operating and that is why it does not recognize the new operating system.  Is this true?

I'm about to call "Uncle" and buy a new computer.  I would like to at least get the computer as an emergency response unit.

Don't I have a solution to my problem?  Change the video card, a solution to my problem?

Yes, change the graphics card for a new would greatly, but AGP on the cards supported for use with Windows 7 is hard to find these days,

In addition, there is virtually none of your computer is properly cared for anything other than XP. You'd better put the money towards a new computer...

You mean 512 MB and 256 MB (not GB) I guess.

but he had got terribly slow.  Dell said that no matter if the size of the maps varies.  However, my system does not reflect the installation of additional memory.  It is preferable or essential only for install memory cards additional of the same size as the existing cards?

See the response of Daave, but also to note the following two points:

    1. you started with 512 MB. The amount of RAM you need for good
performance is not a unique situation for all. You get the right
performance, if the amount of RAM you have prevents you from using the
page file significantly, and this depends on what applications you are running. Most
are people who run a typical range of business under XP applications
somewhere around 512 MB work well, others need more. Almost
everyone will see poor performance with less than 256 MB. Some people,
especially those making things like the large photographic edition
images, can see a performance gain by adding even more of
    512MB - sometimes much more.

Unless you have special needs, so it is likely that the 512 MB you
started with was enough for you.

    2. you say "he had got painfully slow." This implies that the
performance was OK, but it had worsened. This reinforces that
I said in point 1 above. You don't need more memory simply because that
    time has elapsed.

There are several possibilities for why he had obtained more slow, but the
more likely is that you have been infected by malicious software. What
anti-virus and anti-spyware programs that you are running? They remain until
    Date?

The problem is that I cannot now connect to the internet via my broadband router directly connected to the computer. It seems that the wizard to connect only wants to use the dial upward and does not connect to the router. Just recompose. It seems to ignore the connection from the router to broadband and wants to use the dial upward only.
