can I use my main external hard drive as my hard drive

can I use my external hard drive as my main hard drive as my internal is full and how to do it thanks

Hi darrenmchenry,

You cannot use the external drive as primary drive as the operating system files will be present on the internal drive.

If the internal drive is full you can always use the external drive to install programs on the computer by pointing the disk as the location when you install the program and make sure that you do not disconnect the external hard drive if you have installed the programs on it.

  • Photos can work using just an external HARD disk and leave my only intern?

    Hello

I am using v1.5 Photos. On my Macbook HARD internal disk fills up very quickly. Fortunately, I have a nice external 1 TB drive and I would like to:

    (1) move all my photos on the external drive and direct Photos program so search the folder on the external HARD drive to find all photos.

    (2) when I import pictures from my camera in the future, that the Mac them automatically in the folder of photos on the external HARD disk and not keep fill the space limited on my Mac small disk internal.

Is this possible? I remember that I was able to do it with iTunes years when I used a Powermac with 4 x internal HDD of various sizes. iTunes has been able to see the music on each disk files and present them to me as a single list of iTunes.

I'm not interested in using iCloud at all, I have everything on HARD drive and memory sticks and I am satisfied that, as it provides all the storage I need and I only use a computer for my work.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Yes, it is possible to keep the pictures library on an external drive. Make sure that the unit is running at the launch of photos from your Mac.

  • Can I use my old external hard drive after replacing SSDS?

I recently bought a replacement of SSD for my hard drive.  A friend suggested I have get a box for the old man and keep it in a backup or extra.  I was wondering how difficult that would be, and I would be able to run applications from her?

    -Matt H.

Yes, your friend is good, just buy a USB box for this and then you, it's like any other external hard drive. You can get these 10 pounds and more, but you get what you pay for.

Simply open the screw in the naked reader, plug, close the case and you are done. It's very simple to do.

See Zigzag3143 answer you and I would add the following:

If you have only one copy of all the files that are important to you,
whether on an internal hard drive, external drive, or anywhere else, you
are always in danger of losing. It is always possible that a hard
car accident, near Thunderbolt, user error, virus, attack the same
stolen computer, can result in the loss of everything on your drive.
As it has often been said, it is not a question of whether you'll
    such a problem, but when.

I hope you succeed to save your photos, but for the future, be
of course, you always have a backup of these and any other
    important files on external media.

  • Should what format I use for my external hard drive?

I have an external drive that I wish I could use (writing) from my Mac and my PC, but without the limitations of + 4 GB files.

Is this possible or am I pasted with limiting the size? If so should what format I use on my external hard drive? and it has all the other notes aside I should know?

    Thank you!

    Hi Filabaca:

If you want to use a hard drive external Mac and PC options are:

    1. format the drive in Mac as exFat

    2. format the drive to NTFS on a Windows PC and use a program like Paragon NTFS for Mac. https://www.Paragon-Software.com/home/NTFS-Mac/

Paragon NTFS for Mac allows you to use a disc formatted in NTFS by a Windows PC.

Here is an article showing the difference between FAT32, exFAT and NTFS. http://www.howtogeek.com/235596/whats-the-difference-between-fat32-exfat-and-ntf s /

    Hello

    1. What is the format of the file system on the external hard drive?

    2. are you able to copy or move files into the computer?

You can follow the suggestions mentioned below and check with the question.

    Method 1:Delete CCG, prefetch files.

    Step 1: Delete Temp files

    (1) open the window run (Windows key + R)

    (2) type %temp%, and then press ENTER

    (3) delete all Temp files in the Temp folder

    Step 2: Delete Prefetch files

    (1) open the window run (Windows key + R)

    (2) type %temp%, and then press ENTER

    (3) delete all files in the Prefetch folder.

Method 2: Run the tool (SFC.exe) System File Checker, try to copy the files and check.

Follow the form of measures the following link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
Method 3: Run the check disk then try to copy the files and check.
Note: If bad sectors are found in the hard drive then it could try to fix this particular sector. If you have any data on that, it can get lost.

    I hope this helps!
  • Can I use the same disc hard ext I used for El Capitan Yosemite without losing my data?

Can I use the same disc hard ext I used for El Capitan Yosemite without losing my data?

Yes. You should not lose any data, but always have a backup. In this case, you have your internal drive as a backup.

  • After the upgrade to El Capitan I can't write on the external hard drive to NTFS format more

I have an external hard drive formatted in NTFS, I used some Mavericks and could read and write on it without problem, after I installed El Capitan today I can't do more, not this external hard drive is read-only. The problem is that it is full of my data and I can't just format as journaled. What I can do and why it worked fine before?

You need to upgrade or replace the software you used to write on NTFS volumes and should put a copy of your data to a second drive in case one you have fails for any reason unrelated.

  • Satellite L300D-10 q recovery DVD Can be used on the replacement hard drive?

    Hello

I was wondering if the DVD Recovery allows to install Vista on a replacement hard drive? The original hard drive is too small at 160 GB contain all the files that I use the virtual operating system image. The disk hard 500 GB of replacement must be large enough for that.

The reason why I need to Vista, it's that the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Ubuntu 8.04.1 and 8.10, cause the fan to run at full speed all the time which is very annoying. So for the moment I can only use Linux in a virtual machine.

I intend to stay with Toshiba, though, as my two latest portable Toshiba Satellite a PII and a PIII still work today, and both have had Linux on them.

Now, back to my story, I intend to remove the existing laptop, hard drive use DVD recovery to install to external USB 500 GB disk, replace the existing hard drive in starting up the laptop from the USB and copy my data overall. Before you reformat the old drive as external storage, I will replace in the laptop with 500 GB drive and the test so I can boot from the new drive.

Key question will be the change of equipment, i.e. the new hard disk of 500 GB prevent Vista to install or activate?

    Thank you very much

Vista itself can handle huge HARD drive sizes, but the question is: the recovery disc will be happy with 500 GB? The laptop will recognize 500 GB?

I think it will work very well, because the new laptops are released with 320 HARD drive. 500 GB is not far.

Its a few trial and error unless anyone here has tested a disc 500 GB HARD themselves.

  • Can I install programs on external hard drive?

    Original title: external hard drive

I need to free up space and my hard drive. Can I take MS Works off the hard drive, put it on an external drive and use it or is it related to Windows XP and prevent this use? Same question for McAfee, Adobe and other routines.

    Hello

It depends on the program you are trying to install. Generally, it does not work. Check if t he program is written to install on a portable hard drive. MS Works will not work if you install it in an external drive.

    Hope this information was useful.

  • Used to read external hard drive

Hi there, my external hard drive read fine on my old xp computer and it works on other opportunities that I tried to use it but for some reason any that it does not work on my computer.  It says ACCESS DENIED.  I tried everything I could think of.  I took possession of the car, I changed the letter in that it opens.  I don't know why, but I can't seem to make it work on my computer.  Help, please!

    Hi comichooly,

It could be a permission problem; I suggest you follow the instructions that might help you resolve the issue.

In Windows Vista, the built-in Administrator account is disabled by default. In previous versions of Windows, an administrator account was created automatically during Out-of-Box-Experience (OOBE) with a blank password.

An account administrator with a blank password is a security risk. To better protect the system, the built-in Administrator account is disabled by default in all new installations and upgrades of Windows Vista.

HOW to: Enable the build-in the administrator account in Windows Vista

Let us know if you are able to access your external hard drive in the built-in Administrator account.

Please post back and let us know if it helped to solve your problem.

  • Transfer of files from the old HARD DRIVE to new computer without an old computer. (He's dead - can not use) I have the hard drive, but need help to transfer my old files and settings.

    ·        My old Win XP computer died - it is completely unusable. I bought a new PC with Win 7 Pro and 1 TB. I still have the old HARD DRIVE (250 GB) which I have attached on the new computer using an external enclosure supports SATA drives. The external hard drive is connected to the computer in USB 3.0. I checked that the new computer can see the external hard drive. (I also used for backups by changing the hard drive with a 2 TB drive 'mass storage' - that works.)

I searched the internet for possible solutions and found no help. If the transfer of files from Microsoft would change the disc to analyze, it would be simple. But if I select the OLD computer it scans the disk I'm on (new) - automatically.

Is there anyone who has had the same problem? He must be because computers die all the time and people buy new computers - who then, somehow, they get the former transferred files. I could do it manually, but that wouldn't change the settings. Last resort would be to buy an old computer XP (SATA), replace the drive. Transfer the files, and then sell this computer.

You may be able to recover your data files, but I hope that you will set up your new system to automatically backup a second internal hard drive or an external USB hard drive.

This suggestion may not work, but it's worth a try. Buy an external USB drive enclosure. They come in two sizes 2.5 "for the portable computer drives and 3.5" for desktop disks. You can purchase adapters for 3.5 "envelopes so that they can also be used with a portable player. Place the hard drive in the enclosure and connect to a USB port of another computer. Several hard disks are more able to start, but the contents of the disc can still be accessed, read and copied from the disk because you do not use the operating system on a failed disk.

Here is an example of the type of device, I suggest:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=external+hardrive+enclosure&tag=googhydr-21&index=aps&hvadid=14388537836&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=556960941559985931&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&ref=pd_sl_32uorbwbuk_b

You need only to the speaker, that you see are not necessarily more expensive. Thereafter, you can put an old hard drive usable, an abandoned because you need a larger drive internal, in the enclosure and use it as additional external storage.
