Can't see the folder on the hard drive

I have a hard drive from a Vista laptop that has a corrupted windows install on it. Do not have Vista Ultimate, so no bitlocker isn't installed. I need to get the documents out of the disc before restoring it. Plugged into a usb adapter and connected to another computer. When I pull the drive I don't see only three folders.

$recycle.bin
erData
System Volume Information

What should I do to be able to see and copy the necessary data.

Thank you!

Hi eearnest,.

The operating system that you are running on the computer?

Step 1: Appropriating the external hard drive:

1. open Windows Explorer and locate the external hard drive, you want to take charge.

2. right click on the external hard drive, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.

3. click the button change.

4. Please check if administrators and your user account have full control over the disc. If this isn't the case, please select the user in the list and check "Full control" under the section allow.

5. click on apply and then click OK.

Step 2: Start the computer in safe mode and see if you can locate the files.

Access the menu advanced startup options by turning on your computer and pressing the F8 key before Windows starts. In the advanced startup options select safe mode

Enter the BIOS by pressing F10 at startup. If you have the option of Bios Setup to disable the native sata mode, XP will install without problem, no sata driver needed. It will be on the tab of the System Configuration.

If you do not have the setting in the Bios, it's the driver sata for your machine:

Probably, you need to boot in the BIOS of the computer and changed on the hard drive in IDE mode, SATA, so it can be recognized by Windows XP.

If its SATA you need SATA drivers to install. Since the XP CD doesn't have the SATA drivers on it

Unless you disable the AHCI in the BIOS. Or their wake.

Or get the SATA drivers. Check out them on diskette, press F6 during installation and then add them.

  • Try adding an SSD, but now I don't see the hard drive?

I am trying to add a 256 GB SSD on the 1 TB HDD in my Aspire V3 - 772 G.  I put the SSD in the Bay where the hard drive used to be and swapped the hard drive to the extra Bay.  I have cloned the SSD hard drive and can be started either by when you press F12 to select boot Preferences.  However, when I boot with SSD (as I wish I could), I can see is no longer my hard drive.  When I boot by the 1 TB hard drive, both are visible.

I tried to load the hard drive in an external enclosure and I am able to see him as he is connected with USB3. When loading in the drive Bay hard ssecondary, Manager of devices does not see my 1 TB hard drive.  Please let me know if you have ideas for what to try next.

What windows OS is installed and has a value of UEFI BIOS, or legacy?

Have you tried swapping the slot of SSD and HDD, just to understand if it is a BIOS limitation?

  • Can't reformat the hard drive

Hello I do not know much about computers.  I'm trying to find a way to reformat the hard drive on my son computer for a clean installation of XP Pro.  Initially, XP Pro SP1 has been installed on my IBM Thinkpad.  I have automatic updates must occur on the computer so over time, the service pack has been upgraded to SP3.  The corruption of the computer does not restore system, internet access and several programs running on the device.  When I try to format the hard disk with my XP Pro SP1 disk fails because the system is currently running SP3.  I tried to uninstall SP3, but the system does not.
What do other options I have order of the reformat the system drive.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Rrmay,

Thanks for posting. If you try to reinstall XP you can put your OS drive on your computer, or use the OEM recovery media to reinstall XP.

PERFORMING ONE OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS WILL ERASE ALL DATA IN CUSTODY: PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE A BACKUP BEFORE CONTINUING.

The OEM recovery media format the computer and automatically return to the plant as if it was when you first it lit. If you have XP software at retail, you can do the following to format and reinstall.

Method 1: Perform a clean install of Windows XP, a new installation is to remove all data from your hard disk by repartitioning and reformatting your hard disk and reinstall the operating system and programs empty (clean) hard disk. For more information about important things to consider before you partition and format your hard disk and how to partition and format your hard disk by using the Windows XP Setup program, click on the number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

313348 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313348/) how to partition and format a hard disk in Windows XP

To perform a new installation of Windows XP, follow these steps:

    1. Back up all important information before you perform a new installation of Windows XP. Save the backup to an external location, such as a CD or external hard drive.
    2. Start your computer from the Windows XP CD. To do this, insert the Windows XP CD into your CD or DVD and then reboot your computer.

Note To boot from the Windows XP CD, your computer BIOS settings must be configured to do this.

    3. When you see the message "Press any key to boot from CD", press any key to start the computer from the Windows XP CD.
    4. In the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to start Windows XP Setup.
    5. Read the Microsoft software license agreement, and then press F8.
    6. Follow the instructions on the screen to select and format a partition where you want to install Windows XP.
    7. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation of Windows XP.

I hope this helps! Let us know if you have any questions.

  • Tecra S10-106 does not see the HARD drive 1000GO

    Hello

I bought a 1000MB HARD disk and build in on a TECRA S10-106.
The HARD drive was not identified.

Do you have an answer why?

    Thank you for the help

    Hello

He recognized the HARD drive in the BIOS?
If not, then possibly the BIOS can't handle this HARD drive because of the size
    Try a 500 GB or 750 GB 2.5 HDD

How can I physically remove the disk?
And my Device Manager indicates that the drive is a Fujtsu MHV2200BT PL ATA. What, PL, sounds like parallel - I thought it was a SATA drive.

    Hello

This laptop was equipped certainly SATA HDD :)
If you want to upgrade to a larger HARD drive and a SATA HDD is right!

The slot in the HARD drive seems to be placed at the bottom of the unit near the edge of the laptop.
To remove the disc HARD turn the computer upside down.
Loosen the 2 screws and remove the cover of the HARD drive during the liberation of the locks.
Remove the HARD drive cable connector HARD drive. Be sure to not reach
damage to the connector. Place the mounting of the HARD drive on a flat surface and remove the 4 screws.
Then drive HARD is free one may be replaced by a new one.

  • Can I change the HARD drive integrated on my Satellite L50-B-281?

    Hello

is it possible to change the HARD disk integrated in an SSD? Must be a SATA3 SSD?
Or it is also possible to install an additional HARD/SSD drive? For example the HARD drive now integrated as a data harvester and a SSD as a system drive?
Or the DVD player can be exchanged for one SSD?

    Greetings!

HARD drive can be transformed into SSD and it is the best option, but according to user manuals (to the attached picture) your laptop is not separate from the cover of HARD drive in the lower corner so upgrade disk HARD only is not supported for laptop owners and should be done by authorized personnel only.

To have full access to the disk HARD lower cover must be removed completely, and if you do it on your own it will void the warranty.
In my opinion, you should contact the nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. This can be done quite quickly and I don't think that it would be expensive.

  • Satellite 1900-303: can I put the hard drive 120 GB

I have a S1900-303 and I think to raise the 120 GB hard drive. What are the problems, if any, are that I meet and I can do froom the Toshiba startup disk or do I just install XP from a XP disc?

    Hello

That I myself remember Satellite 1900-303 has been delivered with the 30 GB HARD drive.
So, in my opinion, 120 GB HARD drive size is too big and I presume that the BIOS of the laptop will not recognize the HARD drive!

I think you can use a 40 GB, 60 GB and a 80 GB HARD disk.

PS: you must search the HARD disk with the IDE (ATA-5) increased!

Good luck and have a nice day

    TKS.

    Hello

As far as I know the HARD drive is placed on the right side of the laptop.
I think it's on the same side where the reader is placed.

    1. turn the computer.
    2. remove the screw of the cover of the HDD location and remove the cover.
    3. remove the screws fixing the HARD drive ASSY.
    4. hold the HARD drive door handle and remove the drive HARD ASSY.
    5. remove the screws that attach the HARD drive.
6 detach the HARD drive from the HARD drive support.

    That's all

  • Qosmio X 500 - 10W - can I replace the HARD drive with another?

    Hello

I have a Qosmio X 500 - 10W with two drive HARD Toshiba MK5055GSX 500 GB 5400 RPM 8 MB? SATA II but is one of the hs so I'm wondering if I can be replaced by a more powerful style, drive HARD 750 GB 7200 RPM / min 16 MB Toshiba courses?

    Thank you

    Hey,.

Your question is a bit hard to understand, but I think you want to replace the HARD drive with another (faster) model, right?

Well, that s no problem. 7200 RPM hard drives works, they are a little stronger, but they're faster so if you need more performance without problem.
750 GB or more are also no problem because the SATA interface is not the limited capacity. Theoretically 1 TB or more should also work.

Anyway, you can buy the 750Go you mentioned that it will work. :)
