Cannot change the letter of the drive on a USB key in windows 8

I have windows 8.  My wife has windows 7.  With each computer, I am unable to assign a number of drive on a used USB that I recently received.  My theory is that it's a disc designed to be spent as a backup drive that the OS of the computer can recognize but don't know how to interface with.  I was hoping someone might have some ideas.

Each computer recognizes the drive, said it works fine with the latest version of the driver, and ready to use, but it does not appear as a disk on the DESKTOP.
When I go to manage storage-> disk management, disk comes with two partitions in good health.  One is called EFI system partition.  EFI seems to mean "Extensible Firmware Interface".  I'm guessing that it is designed to act as the interface between the OS of the computer and the USB key.  The other is called primary Partition.  While all other readers list their NTFS file system, these two partitions do not list a file system, which makes me wonder if the operating system can recognize the format.   With a partition, if I click right, all options except "help" are grayed out.
Any ideas?
Thank you.

Hey Joe,

This problem can occur because of a damaged USB key.

I suggest you to connect the USB on another computer and check if it works. If this does not work, you may need to contact the vendor which you get the USB key for help on this issue.

Hope this information helps. If you need more assistance or information on this question, reply to this post. I'll be happy to help you.

  • cannot change the drive letter of the external hard drive in XP

I bought an Iomega 1 TB external hard drive and I can not change the drive letter.  I have a click right on my computer and select manage.  When I click on disk management, it does not recognize the outside.  The weird part is that it appears in my computer and I can access the drive without problem.  I disconnected the drive of my XP machine and connected to my Vista laptop and I was able to access it through the management of the disks without problem.  Iomega support claims that it is most likely a problem with my XP machine.  Any ideas how to solve this problem?

Try to use diskpart to complete the task.

-Click Start > run > type diskpart and press enter
-At the prompt, type list volume , press enter
-At the prompt, type select volume 1 (where 1 is the number of the volume is the volume that you need to change the drive letter)

-At the prompt, type assign letter = A (where A is the letter you want to assign your volume)

Close your CMD, and you should be finished.

    Hello

I have two laptops running Vista. On each of them, I have an external USB or SATA drive that I use as a backup partition.
I have my own backup utility, and I like to use the letter B for the backup.

When I change sometimes the discs I've met this parameter is incorrect problem on two computers - sometimes I can change using the method above and sometimes I can't.  I tried to stop the disk cache, anti-virus etc etc etc. with totally inconsistent results so far as I can tell.

Today I tried to boot mode safe mode (F8 at startup) and tried the same steps as before and it worked on the first attempt.

    Maybe it's worth a try.

I have a Lacie D2 Quadra (1 to) I've had for a year now, which worked fine under Vista until about a month when I did a windows update. Since then, he said, I had to reformat my hard drive. Needless to say, I don't want to do that. • Cannot change the C: drive letter to D:

    Hello

I got an answer to a previous question about changing the drive hence my stuff is download for C: to D: drive and I did what was listed and restarted my computer, but he remained always the C drive, please ask some ways for me to change my drive C: to D:

    Hello Paula,.

I would like to know some information about the problem so that we can help you better.

Did you receive an error message when the C: drive letter change?

Thank you for details on the issue.

Unfortunately, drive letter cannot be changed for the C: drive as it acts as a boot partition.

Some programs make reference to specific drive letters. If you change a drive letter, it could be that these programs do not work correctly.

Windows 7 can help to back up the system partition by preventing reformatting or deletion of it, and if the system partition is distinct from a (as recommended) boot partition, it will not automatically assigned a drive letter.

    For reference:
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/what-are-system-boot-partitions#1TC=Windows-7

However, you can create another partition to save your data and files.
    Reference:
Create and format a hard disk partition
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/create-format-hard-disk-partition#create-format-hard-disk-partition=Windows-7

Note: Formatting a volume will destroy all data on the partition. Be sure to back up any data you want to save before you begin.

    I hope this information helps.

Please let us know if you need more help.

    Thank you

  • How to change the drive letter with installed applications?

My window is installed on the C: drive, and the application is installed on the D: drive,

I just buy a new HARD drive and put it into drive E:, everything is copied from drive D: to E: drive and want to switch between the letter D: and E:.

I tried to put in DISKPART, but when I restart my XP, the drive letter remains the same,

If I change the drive letter directly in XP, it cannot be changed, because the applications are running.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions

Make sure any DVD/CD or USB keys are not connected or set F assignments or beyond (MY DVD is S & T).

Shut down the computer; power off. Disconnect the old drive (now D). Connect the new drive (now a copy of the old D). Power and boot to the desktop. Go into disk management and make sure the drive that contains Windows, the original C drive is always c. assign the new drive as D. Reboot the desktop. Check operation.

Shut down the computer; power off. Plug the old drive. Restart the desktop computer. Enter Disk Management and assign it to E.

    Restart, then check the operation.

  • Can I change the drive letter of the recovery partition?

HP P7-1235, Win7 64 bit running. 1 TB HARD DRIVE

I usually partition my hard drive, so that my data is separate from the operating system and applications.  the operating system is the C: partition, and my data is generally D:.  The problem is: "D:" is used by the recovery partition.

I can change his letter to something else, and recovery still works?

    Hello

Well, everything has been said on this subject and its okay.

It's better to not touch the D: partition, set another letter to your other partiion, if you change the recovery partition, you won't be able to use it.

But you can also do a thing, you can go ahead and create your copy of the recovery disks, just enter some DVD, create your copy of the recovery Image, then you can change the drive letter of the partition Recovery to E: or even delete that.

A copy of records RRS, you can always use them to again state of the plant, and that will reformat all your partitions, create the recovery disks and do what you want and prefer with you D: partiion.

    Thank you

  • I used my iMac as a hard drive backup to my macbook once. Now when I update to El Capitan he says that it cannot be updated due to being of a backup. How do I change the drive mode so I can update?

I used my iMac as a hard drive backup to my macbook once. Now when I update to El Capitan he says that it cannot be updated due to being of a backup. How do I change the drive mode so I can update?

If you use your iMac as a backup to disk using Time Machine look for a folder called Backups.backupdb.

It's what keeps you upgraded your operating system, you must remove it.

Copy everything first if you are on a different drive. It would be wise to create a backup of the iMac on another drive also.

Check system preferences > Time Machine and make sure that the iMac is not selected as the Time Machine drive.

  • Change the drive letter for the recovery partition

The recovery partition is, by default, the value to D: which means that if I create a data partition, it is automatically in letters f: while this is not unacceptable, it is inconvenient.  I would like to change the drive letter of the partition data on D: and set the recovery as f partition: if I do this, it will automatically disable the ability to recover?  I am running Windows 7 Professional, which is an originally installed Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade.

Hello Richard9, if you change the Recovery D: HP restore partition to another letter, the recovery procedure would not work if you ever need.

If you have files HP Recovery discs, you could delete this partition and recover the capacity of hard drive D: and use the set of diskettes to restore HP recovery to reintall the original software and the partitions of the hard drive, all as they were when shipped from HP.
