  Jeff, thank you.  I couldn't update any program in CS5.  It turned out that I had to do a 'update manual".  Not sure why it was different, but it worked.

  TestStand uses encodings multibyte code page, that you have defined for the operating system-based. If you are using a code page that requires multibyte characters, you should also make sure that you have the Options of Station-> location-> parameter Regcognize multi-byte characters is enabled.

  On Windows 7, at least, the code page of the operating system setting is located in the control panel "Region and language" in the "Administration" tab where it says "language for non-Unicode programs".

This is not only about a year old and only 1 user "" I use it for school, so I'm very cautious with it never dropped or spilled something on it. I don't even take it. You have stated that you have McAfee, which is a firewall protection and or viruses. Have you tried disabling McAfee? Have you tried another browser? Here is a link to show you how do to troubleshoot Internet Explorer for Windows 8. You could try a System Restore.

  System Restore can restore settings that do not allow you to connect to the Internet.
