  I found the solution to this problem. I went to another Windows help forum. It is to reset the Windows Update program. I tried the one here on the Microsoft site, and it did not work.   I talked to HP technical support. The Officejet Pro 8500 A910 will not install on Windows XP (at least the home edition) when networked through a router. It will install via USB. I uninstalled the program and reinstalled with only USB connected to clear all printer/scanner of network information. Product support claimed it would install through an ether net cable connected between the printer and the computer, but it does little good if you need internet access.
