The free VLC Media Player can play MP4 files.

Or it might be interesting to try to convert the .mp4 files
to .wmv using Windows Media Encoder:

How to convert other video files in WMV formats?
http://www.Microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/KnowledgeCenter/mediaadvice/0065.mspx
(Tip: after clicking the "Convert a file" button...)
When you click on the "Browse" button to select
your .mp4 file... you won't see .mp4 as a choice.
If you open the "Files of Type" menu window
and choose "All files" you can select your .mp4
file.
Under "Content Distribution"... "Archive file".
can be a good choice.
Good luck...

When I tried to play on windows media player I get error msg-file type is not supported or the codec is not compatible with the player. They are .zip files. inside are the mp3 files that I need to listen to. can someone help me.
Hello
You need to open ZIP files, which are compressed to make it smaller, then use the content
in the application appropriate - so if the audio or video content can use WMP.Compress and uncompress files (zip files)

with more features (and works with different types of compressed files).7ZIP - free

Cannot play music files in Windows media player hard disk external.
Hello
I tried for a while to play the transferred music from my hard drive external.
I tried all sorts of things with WMP and it's just not going to play the files.
I canoe play my music.
The thing is that it shows the albums and songs listed there.
But when I open a song and try to hit the room then a box opens with a warning.
Say that Windows Media Player cannot find file.
This has never been a problem with older media players.
I tried to re - download the player, but it's not part of windows more I guess and that sucks.
I want the old player back.
This was very frustrating, I hope someone can help.
Thank you.
Robert

It is perhaps because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. Perhaps it is also because you don't have sufficient access to the file.
