So I did this... and got a product key that's nothing but one on the sticker! We have never reinstalled Windows before product key has certainly never been changed since we bought the laptop in 2006, so for the life of me I don't understand why there should be a different product than the sticker under the watch key.

However when I try to reactivate windows, MS site says that the key I used is "not allowed." I tried to go through the routine of phone to talk to someone and explain my situation, but the Nice robot just told me to go buy a "true copy" of windows. Well, we already have one of those, and I just want to turn it on. Of course, I'd appreciate any suggestions on my next steps. TIA!

  Unfortunately, without the sticker from the bottom of your computer, you may be out of luck.

  The difference in key OEM (like Dell) how can install using a unique key because of the huge number of machines they sell.  The sticker is there for you to use in a situation like yours.

  If it came pre-installed, then Yes. OEM of Windows versions cannot be transferred to another machine...
