Cannot resize disk

Today, I created a new virtual machine using "Import Windows XP Mode". This has created a machine with a disk of size 127 GB. I moved this virtual machine to another location. Everything works fine.

BUT... then I tried to resize the drive using 'Virtual Machine Settings' > select hard drive > "Utilities" > "expand...". »

This gives the following error:

"The called function cannot perform partial channels. Please open the virtual disk parent. »

Looked for clues of what he must do next, but did not find anything useful (in my opinion). Subjects were not associated with VMWare Player or referred to in the questions with snapshots, but I believe that I don't have any snapshot. So after hours searching the web, I ran out of options.

Does anyone know what I should do next?

Well, I had some time to install Windows XP Mode in Windows 7 and then using VMware Player chosen import VM from Microsoft Windows XP Mode and it has created the Virtual Machine from Windows XP Mode VMware and first without running the image below shows the default files created during this process.

"As I previously well that the 'Windows XP Mode.vmdk" VHD is linked to the virtual hard disk "Windows XP Mode base.vhd" as evidenced by the information contained in the disc DescriptorFile built into the Windows XP Mode.vmdk ' of the virtual hard disk as shown below.

# Disk DescriptorFile
version=1
CID=37ee0fdc
parentCID=00000000
createType="monolithicSparse"
parentFileNameHint="C:\Program Files\Windows XP Mode\Windows XP Mode base.vhd"
# Extent description
RW 266338304 SPARSE "Windows XP Mode.vmdk"

# The Disk Data Base
#DDB

ddb.encoding = "windows-1252"

This means that, unless you resize the virtual hard disk "Windows XP Mode base.vhd" first before using the command import Windows XP Mode in VMware Player, then you won't be able to have a larger hard under VMware Player as the "Windows XP Mode.vmdk" virtual hard disk is for all purposes useful just a disk snapshot and under normal circumstances a virtual hard disk with the snapshots can be expanded through normal default methods.

I understand what you say, I have created a disk of asm with 500 MB of size using asmtool, so I can't resize using asm instance.

    1. What is the use of asmtool-added option, we can add an existing using this command drive space?

This isn't for adding space, but it adds the label to the disk partition...
    asmtool - add \Device\Harddisk1\Partition1 ORCLDISKASM0
    >

2 can you please explain this more, * it could be increased if you already held 300 total asm 500 disk space *?

Think like OS, you have created a 10 GB partition for disk D:\ example. And now, you create files/folders with size of hugh (as some movies ;)) to drive D:\, so eventually your drive D:\ will fill. This is the case even with your asm disk, once you have used all your available space of the asm disk (that you created through asmtoll), you can not increase.
By asmtool - create D:\Asm_disks\disk3 500, you assign the total size to 300 from the asm disk. Just as you add 10 GB partition for OS...

You come to the backup from my point of view: it could be increased if you already worked 300 asm disk space total 500

I have created the disk with the following text:
    asmtool - create 500 D:\Asm_disks\disk3 > size is 500

    I create diskgroup with
SQL > create diskgroup DB 'D:\Asm_disks\disk3' size disc 300; > Here I wll use only max 300 size of 500 total. So once I get to the threshold of 300, I can increase the asm disk up to 500.
    As
SQL > alter diskgroup DB resizing disk "D:\Asm_disks\disk3' size 500; > Increasing up to 500

Default if the clause you SIZE omit while creating a diskgroup, asm then disc occupies all the available space of the device that you have created by asmtool

We can control as I explained.

If you encounter a problem that you need help, follow these steps:

Please provide additional information on your system:

What is your system brand and model?

What is your Version of XP and the Service Pack?

Describe your current antivirus and software anti malware situation: McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, MSE, Panda, Trend Micro, CA, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, Comodo, etc..

The question was preceded by a loss of power, aborted reboot or abnormal termination?  (this includes the plug pulling, buttons power, remove the battery, etc.)

You have a true bootable XP installation CD (it is not the same as any recovery CD provided with your system)?

What you see you don't think you need to see?

What do not you think that you should see?

Fill in the blank: my system worked well until: _.

If you just want to start by running chkdsk /r on your hard drive (a good idea), I would follow the instructions below:

Use the XP Recovery Console to check the file system on your HARD drive and fix all the problems.

Boot into the Recovery Console Windows using an XP bootable installation CD.

If you have no XP bootable media (or aren't sure you have) create a bootable XP Recovery CD of Console and do not forget.

This is not the same as recovery disks that may have come to a store to purchase the system.

You can make a bootable Recovery Console CD by downloading an ISO file and burn it to a CD.

The ISO bootable image file you need to download is called:

    xp_rec_con. ISO

    Download the ISO from here:

    http://www.mediafire.com/?ueyyzfymmig

Use a new CD and this simple and free program to burn your ISO file and create your bootable CD:

    http://www.ImgBurn.com/

Here are some instructions for ImgBurn:

    http://Forum.ImgBurn.com/index.php?showtopic=61

It would be a good idea to test your bootable CD on a computer running.

You may need to adjust the computer BIOS settings to use the CD-ROM drive as the first device to boot instead of the hard drive.  These adjustments are made before Windows tries to load.  If you miss it, you will need to restart the system again.

When you start on the CD, follow the instructions:

Press any key to boot from CD...

    Installing Windows... going to pronounce.

Press 'R' to enter the Recovery Console.

Select the installation that you want to access (usually 1: C:\WINDOWS)

You may be asked to enter the password (usually empty).

You should be in the folder C:\WINDOWS.  It's the same as the

C:\Windows folder that you see in Solution Explorer.

The Recovery Console allows base as file commands: copy, rename, replace, delete, chkdsk, fixboot, fixmbr, cd, etc.

For a list of the commands in the Recovery Console, type help at the command prompt.

Start by checking the integrity of your file system by using the chkdsk command.

In the command prompt window, run the chkdsk command on the drive where Windows is installed to try to fix any problems on the afflicted player.

Running chkdsk is fine, even if he finds no problem.  It won't hurt anything to run it.

Assuming your boot drive is C, run the following command:

    CHKDSK C: /r

Let chkdsk finish to correct the problems, he could find.  It may take a long time for chkdsk complete or they seem to be "stuck".  Be patient.  If the HARD drive led blinks always, chkdsk is something.  Keep an eye on the amount of the percentage to be sure that it is still making progress.  It may even seem to go back sometime.

You must run chkdsk/r again until it finds no error to correct.

Remove the CD, and then type "exit" to exit the RC and restart the computer.

You have not to set the BIOS to boot the disk HARD since the CD won't be.

Do, or do not. There is no test.

    Welcome to the community,

This virtual machine successfully powered on since July 23?

To me, it seems that something went wrong with the clichés (I guess they are / were created by a backup application). Due to the size of the files I guess more that snapshots were created and not modified.

If this is the case, you can delete the virtual machine to inventory, edit the vmx file by

    replacement of

    scsi0:1.filename = LHMU-VIC04_1 - 000004.vmdk

    with

    scsi0:1.filename = LHMU - VIC04_1.vmdk

then right-click on the vmx file in browser data store and add it to the inventory.

Before adding it to the inventory, delete the snapshot vmdk files (those with '00000 x' in their file names) as well as the vmsd file. BTW, you can also remove the zdump file if you want.

If you are not sure if snapshots contain valid data, take a look at the (small) header files vmdk. If the CID and the parentCID match, snapshots were created while the virtual machine has been powered down.

If you are not sure, please post back before doing anything.

  • Cannot resize the virtual disk, the virtual machine by using a «child» vmdk file

    Release: VMWare workstation 9

    SE host: Windows 7 64-bit

    Screenshots below.

I want to resize my VM from 50 GB to 100 GB.

It seems that VMware workstation 9 uses a child for my VM vmdk.  In my case, using its "Windows Server 2008 R2 x 64 - 000001.vmdk" for its virtual disk file.  The correct file should be "Windows Server 2008 R2 x64.vmdk", I think.

There are currently no snapshots registered for this virtual machine, I see.

The virtual machine works well as is, but I can't resize the disk without the VMWare gui, saying I should be perform the operation on the parent vmdk file.

It seems that I do run a snapshot that is not really a snapshot?  How to merge with the older files - Sxx.vmdk to 0000xx - Sxxx.vmdk

I also tried to use the command line tool to manually resize the vmdk parent, but I get permission "access denied" errors.

Note: Before the procedure you have a good backup of the virtual machine in case you accidentally mess something up.

VMware fusion 7.1.2 (Windows 7 comments), I would like to increase the size of a virtual disk pre-alloue. The General Settings pane says that the drive requires cleaning. That's why the pane that would allow me to increase the size of the drive refuses to do because the drive requires cleaning. The part that would make cleaning refuses to do it because the disk is not a type that can be cleaned.

Is it possible to convince VMware me to expand the virtual disk?

Note that the virtual disk is created as a previously assigned drive, but it was created by a version much sooner from vmware about time Windows 7 came out. My vmware has been updated regularly since then that the new versions/revisions have been released.

According to the support beam, the virtual machine has two snapshots active, although they appear in Manager Snpashot.

  • Workstation 8; cannot resize the disk on the full clone

I have a related clone I want to create a complete clone so that I can expand the virtual hard disk.  But after I created the full clone and try to use the indicator Workstation 8 utility I have an error message: "You can't develop this virtual disk because it is a linked clone."  I tried this three times, with great attention the last two times to read all dialog boxes to make sure I'm not a mistake, but the same error comes back every time.

Here are the steps I go through:

    (1) turn off the linked clone

    (2) delete all snapshots for the linked clone

    (3) file-> open-> choose the clone of linke

    (4) VM-> manage-> Clone - to pen the Clone Virtual Machine Wizard. in the wizard:

    (5) "The current state of the virtual machine" pick (I tried as long as and create a snapshot and try to clone from that)

    (6) select "CREATE FULL CLONE' (not ' create a linked clone)

    (7) name the new complete cloned machine, and then click on finish

After about 10-15 minutes, I get a message indicates the complete clone is finished.  I then close VMware, open it back up, open the new full clone that I created and select chose to: edit virtual machine settings-> tab-> click on the hard drive to extend hardware-> utilities-> Expand.  The error box I mentioned above pop and 8 workstations does not indicator the hard drive.and error as described above.

    Am I missing something here?

If you can confirm the virtual disk of the new virtual machine is not a Flash disk (i.e. with 00000x.vmdk in its name) and the vmware.log file (created after you turn on the virtual machine) shows not all other hard files, you can check if the .vmsd of the virtual machine file contains incorrect entries. Essentially - after making sure that no other hard files are used - you could just delete the .vmsd file.
