We are doing a forensic work and I need to find a way to capture the profile of an active user on a Win7 machine. Is this possible using native tools in Windows?

  • Pavilion Slimline 400-314: cannot delete the renamed user profile

    Greetings!

I've been enjoying the nuances of Windows 8.1... right.  In any case, I have Win8.1 64-bit on this excellent HP SLimline PC.  Now, I need help with the operating system.  I am an avid user of Windows 7 and like it a lot. My four PC's the only one with 8.1 and I have some learning curve experiments, of which this is one.

So, I got this computer since July 2014 and did not otherwise than with the administration of the accounts.  The problem is that the account administrative principal (Yes, I use two accounts, one for the daily work and an administrator account to manage the computer - life is safer like that).

The username admin account had to be changed, so I did.  You would think that changing the name of the account automatically would do this in all areas of the system filiing.  In this case, not so much.  WIN8.1 has created a new profile.

I'm not saying that the name of the profile has not changed for purposes of connection, he fact and that seems fine.  However, looking at the users listed in the Explorer file and also on the network, the old user profile still exists with all rights and privileges of the Administrator profile normal.

I think that's not good for two reasons; It is confusing on the network. It also creates a set of accessible files because there is no way to connect to clean.  And it may pose a security problem.

Also, note that has not degraded the function of the computer, but it appears sometimes in unpredictable circumstances.

What have I done to alleviate this problem?   Initially took a chance on system restore. I do not have a restore point will go back far in time to correct it.  Then I tried the old "select and delete" some content. Not a good idea and the system let me not in all cases.  I don't know that it needs to be done by the operating system.  I'm not sure I want to change the registry immediately, but maybe it's my only choice.

So, I'm at a stand still for the resolution. Not wanting to rebuild the computer, I need a way to rub user profiles and delete the one which is supposed to be deleted.

As always, thanks to all those who can suggest a positive way to correct this problem. It's probably very easy... maybe

Banhien... Thanks for all your help in this matter.  Between your good suggestions and a little thought on my part, I was able to remove the 'extra' account on the computer.  To change the standard account using your idea was the key, except in this case, it was a little more complex.

Note that there are only meant to be two accounts on this computer.  Here's what I had to do:

1 log on as an administrator.

    2. change the administrator account.

3 Rename the account administrator to the name that it was before I renamed it and capture a standard user.

4 restart the computer (even if it is perhaps not necessary, just a good idea so that everything lines up again)

    5. open a session under the 'new' admin account (that I changed standard user)

    6. remove the standard account renamed and all of its associated files.

    7. create a new Admin account as the administrator

8 change the original standard user, turned administrator, standard user feedback.

Now, I'm back for two accounts;  an administrator account and a Standard user account.

    Restarted the computer.

Set up the 'new' account of the administrator

Thanks again for your help. Have a great day.

  • Could not connect to the service user profile Service.

I have a little disconcerting problem.  Every day or two, I can not connect to Windows correctly.  When I start, select my account (which is also the unique administrator account) and enter my password, it spends an abnormally long time in the 'Starting Windows' screen, then I get the following message pop up in the notification area:

"Unable to connect to a windows service.
Windows could not connect to the service user profile Service.
This problem prevents limited users to logon to the system.
As an administrator, you can review... »

Shortly after this message, I get a windows error message saying:

    "Location is not available.
    C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is not accessible.
    Access is denied. »

This seems just a desktop computer black with only the Recycle bin icon on it, and the old Windows Start button in the taskbar.

While trying to understand what is happening, I looked into the application of 'Problem reports and solution' in the control panel and found that every time this happens, I also have a corresponding event of "Stopped working" "Routing and remote access.

I then restart using F8 at startup and choose the one that says something to the effect of "using the last good configuration known."

I'm not sure what that means at all, but I hope that one of you people can help.

    Thank you!

    Hello any Leafs fan,

Thanks for posting on the Microsoft answers Forum.

Looks like you're running only because of using a system restore to get back when your system is running. Now, you want to know what caused it.

Usually, when the above error occurs, it is due to a corrupt user profile.
The best way to fix this is to remove the user profile.

    • Go to the Start button
    • Right click on computer
    • Go to the properties
    • Go to Advanced System Properties on the left pane
    • Select the Advanced tab
    • Go to the user profile Section and click on the settings button
    • Find the profile for the that you want to remove and click Remove.  (It's the best way to remove the local profile in Windows Vista).
    • Connection again and you will get a new profile.
    • To get your Favorites return, go to the old profile in C:\users and copy the data manually.

The only way to identify what caused the error with the user profile is to try to reproduce it.

If you have not installed the update of Windows, then you can go to Windows updates and see what are the updates must be installed and manually download them and install them one at a time. Between the installation of the system, make sure you have a restore point that you can go back to if necessary. Once an update is installed, then close and open a session back (or reboot if required by the software update) and see if you get the error user profile. If the error occurs, then go to Services and see if the user profile service is running and set to automatic.

If you are not able to do anything when the problem occurs, then try to start in safe mode using the F8 key and see if the problem occurs in safe mode.

You can also look in the event viewer to see if there is no dealing with event profile user or Windows Update errors.
To get to the event viewer, you can type in eventvwr.msc in the box start the search. This will bring up the event viewer and you can view the summary logs and see what kind of errors you encounter.

Please post with your results and if you need further assistance.

    Sincerely, Marilyn

Then, I held the power button for five seconds to turn off the computer and restart it.  When he started upward, it showed an error that says the computer is not stopped correctly and on this screen, there are several options to reboot windows, I chose the option "restart windows normally" I could connect with my fine existing password, but when the windows actually open, my experience had changed and all my files are gone.  After some research, I found that all the old information of my were still there, but a separate user profile had been created and everything has been re-pathed to the new user.  The new user profile name was my existing profile name, then my name with a .pc at the end (ie. user name - username.pc).

My questions are twofold: one) what the hell happened? and (b) what is the simplest to make everything re-pathed to my existing user profile.

    Thank you

You have been put in a temporary user profile because the original was damaged. You can try the techniques below. If this does not work, let me know and I'll give you another path.

Critical files are under % systemdrive%\users\user-account\ntuser. The ntuser.dat file is actually a registry hive. Run regedit high and select HKEY_USERS and "load hive" in the menu. Now, go to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

There is a line for each profile. If a profile is bad, check:

    (a) that the name of the key does not stop in ".bak" (remove .bak If it)
    (b) that the RefCount value is 0 (change it if it is different)
    (c) that the State value is 0 (change if different)

If this is not the case, make the changes and try to connect as this user.

More details of MVP Aaron Tiensivu - assume in this example that the user name is "atiensivu", field is "personal" and the user profile is located in % systemdrive%\users\atiensivu. Letter is usually C: on standard Vista installs. Replace each instance of "atiensivu" by the username of the corrupted profile.

    1. If you can log in profile, take note of the variable value environment % USERPROFILE. It will probably be "C:\Users\atiensivu" or "C:\Users\atiensivu.staff". Logoff.

    2. If you have opened a session with the profile at any time since your last reboot or you think that there are files in use in the profile, reboot. The important part is to ensure that there are no open files in the directory of the profile broke.

    3. log in as administrator or another account that has local administrator rights.

    4. run "takeown /r /a /d y/f % systemdrive%\users\atiensivu.

    5. starting at % systemdrive%\users, rename "atiensivu" to "atiensivu.old".

    6. in % systemdrive%\users, create a directory named "atiensivu".

    7 run "takeown/r/u staff\atiensivu/f % systemdrive%\users\atiensivu".

    8. run regedit and go to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList and remove the SID key to the corrupted profile. Best way to find the correct SID is looking for the 'ProfileList' key to the directory mentioned in %UserProfile% in #1 step.

    9. closure of the session.

10 log on the account "atiensivu". A new profile must be created. Copy all the files you can of the old profile directory.

Orders "takeown" might be overkill, but I don't like permission errors.
