Cause of constant hard disk activity?

Dimension 2400

Windows XP Home Edition

Comcast wired business

Use this machine at work and for the past month or so have had problems with access to internet sites because of hard training are constantly working.  Thought that maybe the automatic updates were causing the problem then went manual with those.  Seems every time I click on a new site, what HDD continues working even if nothing appears to download.  Really slow things down much.  Any suggestions?

  • Windows 8-64 'System' process shows the constant hard disk activity

Windows 8 system process shows a constant activity of hard disk (as shown in the resource monitor); read and write, but write.   (Lenovo T420, i7, 8 GB ram, disk full of ~ 40%).  This slows down the performance of the computer to a standstill.  No obvious reason why this should happen... nothing unusual current execution, only IE and Word + other normal stuff (files, Windows Defender history, etc.).  Can't all the time.  Seems to begin this behavior when switching users, or restart.  Can allow the computer to run for hours without solving this problem of disk write constantly.  Sometimes, but not always, the restart will also solve this problem.  Sometimes reboot seems to cause this behavior start.   Very annoying because it inhibits all operations of PC and its use.

    DELETED Comodo Internet Security.
    Restarted the computer.
Installed Comodo Firewall ( NOT Internet Security, ONLY the firewall).
    Restart computer
    Activated
Windows Defender from the center of the Action.
    Update Windows Defender online.
    Problem solved.
If you guys are using Comodo internet security, remove and check.
If you're not, there is probably an another 3rd party application which is the cause, probably badly tested safety related application.
    Good luck.

  • The constant hard disk - system and DiagnosticAgent.exe wrote to 300 different activity. Files of the PNF at a constant rate - starting programs negatively impaired.

Something similar to this began after a time, I was installing updates (somewhere in June or July). A month later, after I installed SP2 via the update, the problem presented differently (just as bad). Here's what I found recently of the reliability monitor and performance:

    -DiagnosticAgent.exe > C:/windows/inf/infcache.0 = wr 1.5 MB/min x 2 (constant) (sometimes up to 6 x)

-System > loads of instances (~ 500) on. The files of the PNF in C:\Windows\inf\ =
    mainly writing<100kB in="" but="" some="" write="" up="" to="">
-Diagnosticagent.exe > loads of instances (~ 500) on. The files of the PNF in C:\Windows\inf\ =
    mainly writing<100kB in="" but="" some="" write="" up="" to="">

(total of instances of 1000 files .pnf; 300 different ones, several up to 12 instances of the same .pnf, half of them at least 4 instances of the same .pnf.)

I don't see many cases playback from the hard drive. Even at 100% highest active time, the graph of the disc in the performance bed also monitor, an average of only 2 Mbps. When Disk Defragmenter is running, it is an average of 50 MB/s.

This constant HDD activity about 1000 cases write in 30 minutes continuous .pnf files after startup and after awakening from sleep. While that happens, most of the programs, after loading, do not react for 5 minutes, then run as usual. Even the message control user account often fails to appear before it expires (in 2 minutes) during this time.

I tried Googling on hdd constant activity on the PNF files, but did not find much.

I will try using the restoration of the system again, although I had a few unsuccessful attempts with her.

I have Norton Antivirus installed, which scans for viruses periodically. It is not really the cause of this unknown and unusual hard disk activity I know.

  • My Dell laptop has begun to consume 100% of his memory and then eating my hard disk activity, causing the light becomes solid.

After the restart after that the most recent windows update, my computer dell laptop began to consume 100% of its memory, and then eating my hard disk activity, causing the light becomes solid. The computer is severely slow, I checked for viruses, malware, and registry errors with no chance to address the issue. The computer is a memory dump, but I could so he could properly start without doing a memory dump, it becomes all just slow and unresposive at the simplest of tasks. Any ideas of what it could be? What to check? How to fix?

Original title: excessive use of Ram

Runs a more comprehensive material, it was established that it is a bad hard drive. Fortunately, it's not bad enough that the data is not recoverable so I replace the hard drive.

  • Equium L350 starts (led on) but no HARD disk activity

    Hi all

I got this Toshiba Equium L350D since September 2008 and it has not been used often, it worked fine two days ago, but yesterday I turned on it, with attached cord and the "cap" light came and was solid, and has therefore the power and battery indicators, I could hear the fan and the light on the cd/dvd was on. But that's all, no hard disk activity at all.

I could not turn off without unplugging the power cable and remove the battery as the power button does not seem to make a stop if pressed during 10 seconds.

All the advice, set apart from taking it to a repair center, because I really don't want to spend too much money on it.

    Hi dude

I think that you have no choice as to contact a technician for laptop.
The point is that this issue sounds like a hardware problem serious, I think of the mother or the CPU issue because it was not possible to stop the unit by pressing the power button for 10 seconds

The laptop was purchased in September 2008?
Well, if you have saved the laptop on the Toshiba driver European page then the guarantee must be valid for 24 months. Which means that the guarantee must be still valid
So you should not have to pay anything

    Welcome them

  • Satellite 3000-214: after CPU upgrade no screen and no HARD disk activity

    Hey all,.
    I have a 3000-214 Satellite that comes originally with a PIII-M 933 Mhz. (SL5CG)
    http://videoff7.free.fr/sl5cg.jpg

I ordered on eBay a second hand replacement (1133 Mhz) CPU SL5CK. (same number of pins, the same processor family: RH80530)
When I go in, the laptop starts, but there is nothing on the screen and no HARD disk activity.

So I asked the seller if he had tested the CPU, it sent, he said no and sent me 2 CPUs of replacement, another SL5CG and a SL64Z (which does not appear on the Intel site for some strange reason, but which is of the same characteristics as the SL5CG..)
    http://videoff7.free.fr/sl5ck.jpg
    http://videoff7.free.fr/sl64z.jpg

The two processors give the same result with nothing on the screen and no activity of the HARD drive either.
I checked my BIOS, it is the latest version: 2.30.
Some laptops in the series 3000 Satellite (e.g. 3000-601), are delivered with a 1133 Mhz CPU (SL5CK) and also share the same bios exactly like my 3000-214. (upgrades to the bios on Toshiba website for my 214 & 601 are the same exact links and MD5 are equal). Also the 3000-601 & 3000-214 share the same chipset: Intel 830MP.
But for some reason, it does not.

    EC which could I missed?

It is always possible that all 3 processors that I was sent by the seller are dead, but it would be strange at this point, I think.
So my question is, anyone have any idea what I might try to work or have experience with the upgrade a Satellite 3000 CPU?

My warranty is looooong Sub anyway, so if a Toshiba employee could check in the basis of how fast max CPU can be used on the Sat 3000-214, I would be very grateful.

Thanks a bunch for any info.
    Kind regards

    Alcahest

    Hello

I studied a bit in the web and it seems that the Satellite 3000 has been bundled with Intel Mobile PIII 800, 850, 900, 1000 MhZ CPU

I think that this will not work because of the speed of the CPU.
In addition, I found this Toshiba document:
    http://support.toshiba-tro.de/KB0/FAQ5300W5000XR01.htm

It is said that it is not possible to replace the processor in a laptop Tosh because processors are connected to the motherboard using a process called TCP tape carrier package.

  • Satellite Pro L10, the hard disk activity?

Hi, I noticed that on my new L10 Pro of Satellite keeps it hard drive light flashing every 3 seconds approximately and I can also hear disk activity, even when he's just sitting there idle. I was wondering if this is normal, if so why? I was a little suspicious, so I checked all processes running, nothing suspicious. I thoght maybe it's because my drive is fragmented, then defragmented but no change. I thought maybe theres a kind of disk being cached on. I have 512 MB of ram and adequate committed virtual memory, if its doing with VMM is this normal?

    Hello

It is not easy to say what the reason for this. I had a similar problem with my Satellite. The HARD drive was very often active and very slow. In my case, the reason was the antivirus software. The scanning of the HARD drive has been the almost permanent process and something to work on the machine was almost impossible.

After removing the antivirus software HDD is fast. Now, I found a new and there is no problem more.

  • Satellite A300-1LT won't boot up - white screen & no HARD disk activity

I had a problem, the touch pad does not work.
I found on the internet solution to stop computer, take out the battery, wait a bit and try again.
    That's when my problems start.

When I put the battery back on, I turned on the laptop.
White screen (nothing happens), led indicators are on (except for the hard disk), cd drive tries to read but nothing happens and the fan is running.
I tried everything I could find (wait 30 minutes, take out, start without battery battery, etc.) but no luck.

My lap top is Satellite A300-1lt, and I got 2 months.
I don't want to take it to the service, unless it is really necessary, because I really need now, I can't wait for weeks until what he returned.

Please can someone help me out, Im desperate...

    Thanks in advantage...

Connect your laptop (with battery) to the power supply and leave an hour, try to restart your laptop. If portable starting again let it run until the battery will be fully recharged.

I hope that it will work properly again. I had a similar problem with my Satellite A300-1LI, and I do this. Laptop now works perfectly with or without adapter.

  • Satellite Pro S750-008 diskpart ' all don't own "is suspended, no HARD disk activity

I'm following the instructions at sevenforums to erase my entire HD before sending my laptop somewhere.
In particular, I publish the diskpart command "prompt at startup.

I only have a single HD on the laptop, disk 0, and I chose it before "clean."
The page above says that it takes about 1 hour for 300GB and I have 300 GB, but it is not yet done after 2 hours. However, I also note that the HD LED shows not all activity.

The hung process due to the fact I clean the HD even I am operating from?
Is it advisable to either stop the machine, and then carry the HD on in an external enclosure so I can use another computer to look/see what has been deleted?
Will it hurt the HD to interrupt such a procedure (possibly hung) deletion?

I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit on a Toshiba Satellite Pro S750-008 (aka PSSERC-00800)

    Hello

Why you n t use a DVD recovery or a floppy from Win 7 to format the HARD drive?
Boot from the Toshiba recovery disc. The recovery disc formats the HARD drive and partitions and redefines the laptop to factory settings.

You can also start Win 7 disc (or other Microsoft) and can format the HDD too.

  • Satellite L300 - up but screen now empty + no hard disk activity

I was just restoring a laptop Satellite L300-1DN for someone who has 2 main issues.

    (1) it was dirty on the inside
    (2) he asked instantly when starting, the password for the BIOS that is unknown and the "Toshiba" standard does not work, so I think that BIOS should be reset.

I have it disassembled and cleaned everything and it back up to new back to how it was. But when I now turn on although power and battery lights up and the fan is running, there is no display there is no activity from the drive hard or its lights.

Any thoughts on the cause of this?

    Thank you

    What say about it?
General laptop disassembly is permitted for staff only and this should be done following an exact description in the document of maintenance manuals.
You did it on your own, knowing he can be risky and ends with a few hardware malfunction, especially if you try to reset the BIOS.

What you can do now is to reopen and checking all the connections again. What else can you do?
I can't say for sure, but somehow I think the BIOS is screwed.

To be honest, some password BIOS Toshiba standard is unclear to me and I've never heard that there are something like that. Reset the BIOS? How did you do that? As far as I know, this method is different for the different laptop models.

  • Satellite M30 slow start, running slow & on most of the time HARD disk activity led

The question above with my laptop. It is used to run faster than my desktop, but has altered performance. Running XP SP2 and Norton Internet Security and Norton System Works. No error shows when executing the Tests of Norton. Have reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled software but little difference.

Laptop takes @5 minutes to start. Open Outlook takes 10 seconds. Drive light is on most of the time so I was wondering if the hard drive related.

    Any ideas?
    Thank you very much.

Try the freeware like HD Tune or HDD Health programs.
These applications provide some information on the State of the HARD drive.

  • Equium A110-233: black screen and no HARD disk activity

    Hello

problem trying to trouble shoot A110-233 for a friend. When you switch on the button lights up, don't have cd activity but no activity of HD and black screen.

I have a two beeps beep message can not find the error codes to display errors, but I guess that's an error code.

I tried to connect to external monitor but no output.
I think that it is a possible motherboard failure.

    Any ideas would be appreciated

    > I think that it is a possible motherboard failure.

I agree with you that it really looks like a malfunction of the motherboard.
This could be the worst case because the motherboard needs to be replaced
The motherboard is on the more expensive laptop parts and I'm sure the replacement would be a costly affair.

But it seems that the unity of the A110 is not very old. Eventually the warranty is still valid, and everything can be done for free?  :|
You should definitely contact the ASP in your country to clarify this point.

    Good luck

  • Satellite A30 much HARD disk activity when you connect

    Help!

My A30 makes disk workloads when resume after power off tension/setting Hibernate / standby that makes it really, really slow to do anything. Sometimes, it can take up to 15 minutes before any useful work can be done.

What it does and how it can be stopped?

    "angus.

    Hello

As Tobi said, you should check the operating system for some spyware or viruses.
Please check this links. You will find friendly programs.
    http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/AdAware/
    http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html

In addition, you must verify the operating system on some background process. Start the msconfig. You can find and turn on/off the background and services processes.

  • Sluggish laptop Win7: disk activity constant LIGHT but no e/s in ResMon

I am running out of ideas on how to determine the cause of my glowing disk activity led constantly and very slow computer and then hope you can offer any suggestions as to what to do short of re - install Windows.

The problem goes away when I secure boot (all tastes). The problem remains when I clean the boot. I even finished by a force services/processes that survive the clean boot.

I ran sfc and chkdks and neither found no errors. Resmon shows virtually no activity disk, processor, and memory after the machine installs start. Zero page faults. I ran various analyses of viruses and malicious software in hopes of finding a stand-alone process hides or a root kit, but nothing has been detected.

There may be a crazy driver gets jumped or substituted when starting in safe mode? How can I determine what is different between start and clean not to mention video drivers, startup environments?

I am really at my wits end and would welcome any ideas you may have on how to proceed. Thank you very much!
