  # You have need Vista compatible drivers - it's the only way it will work.  Installing bad drivers can even to hurt the unit or even your system to not try.  Get a new USB device that works with Vista, and has the correct drivers.

  You can install the HP Solution Center software on several computers connected to the same netowrk as your printer.

  Try following these steps to solve the USB error during installation:

  Click the Start button and type folder in the search bar, then open the Temp folder indicated.
  
  Open the last HP installation folder that begins with 7z (e.g. 7zs1234)
  Open the installation folder.
  Find the file usbready.exe and rename it to usbready.old.exe
  Navigate to the main extraction folder (folders that begins with 7z) and run the Setup.exe file.
  
  Now follow the installation and check for the difference.

I understand that a recovery disk will wipe your system and re-install, but how can you "retrieve" which wasn't there in the first place?   Also, if Windows 7 is working well, you don't need to go Windows 8/8.1 upgrade unless your phone's touchscreen will not benefit you as Windows could break the drivers or software that works under 7 may not correctly work in 8. So be careful and not always try for the most recent toys that could cost you more headaches, then you want to and can't really get more then the current Windows 7 can do for him already.

  Many netbooks with Starter have only a 1024 x 600 screen - if the program needs a minimum of 1024 x 768 it may not work or may not display all. But it wouldn't be because of the netbook, Windows.

  If your laptop has Windows 8 or higher, Microsoft codes the license on the hard drive rather than put a sticker on the base. Sounds like the repair people could have used a dubious copy to reinstall it on the new hard drive. Microsoft may allow you to report it as pirate software, but I'm not sure they'll give you a free copy. The other alternative is to contact ToshIba to buy a complete set of recovery disks, or take it back to the shop.
