CentOS 6 under ESXi 5.0 - no NIC (eth0)

All-

I just installed 6 64-bit CentOS and I'm unable to add an adapter network correctly. I've tried using E1000, VMXNET2 and VMXNET3.  I tried to add all 3 at once, and none appears when I type ifconfig.  Only loopback is displayed.

Anyone have any ideas on what I should do? I thought I need to use yum to install vmware tools can help, but I have no internet connection.

Thanks in advance!

If you use dhcp on your network, run the follow command:

eth0 - v #dhclient

If you use the static ip address, run the follow command:

#ifconfig eth0 IPADDRESS

for example:

eth0 192.168.0.1 #ifconfig

You may need your VM upgraded to Virtual Hardware 9 in order to have the ungreyed checkbox.

Power off the virtual machine, right-click on the virtual machine and choose upgrade virtual hardware. Who's going to format virtual material 9.

  • File under ESXi versus NAS appliance server

We have a Netapp file server that is used for sharing files using SMB 2.0

I want to virtualize file services, since I have all the other virtualized servers

I came across two solutions for this under ESXi 5.1

    • Use the Windows Server 2008 R2 or Server 2012 file services role
    • Use Enterprise Martin http://www.Sanbolic.com/web_serving.htm . This option seems to bring some nice features on the single use of Windows Server

I did that three actions files with a be 2 TB, the other two are much smaller. If I virtualize file server, that I need to use virtual RDM or iSCSI initiator of Microsoft to present a volume of more than 2 TB.

Any thoughts on virtualization of files under ESXi 5.1 services?

With Windows 2008 R2, it can be done with Failover Clustering, and there are some things to know I suggest checking the document "Setup for Microsoft Cluster Service and Failover Clustering."

I know Martin Enterprise, so I can't speak to that one.

  • VM under ESXi 4.0 recognizes as USB NIC

    Hello

I have a Dell PowerEdge R300 running under VMware ESXi 4.0 license.

The server has built-in network card Intel Gigabit AND Dual Port, and I added an another PCIe Broadcom NetXtreme II 5709.

I installed Windows Server 2003 virtual machine, and after complete installation, the 2003 recognize the USB network card and displays the icon in the systray.

This allows me to "Remove hardware safely'-> 'remove Intel PRO 1000/MT".

Of course if I do that I lose the networking on this server... Jac's for "security".

Anyway, when I created the virtual machine, I used the default values of VMware NIC adapter E1000.

I could choose E1000, Flexible, VMXNET (improved) 2 and 3 VMXNET.

Is it possible to disable the deletion of the Windows NETWORK card? Or I must stop the virtual machine, install another NETWORK card and restart?

    Thank you.

    Hello

It is advisable to install the vmware tools in the comments. I always recommend you to install the vmware tools.

You're talking about the issue of vNIC, is not really a bug, is a new feature called hot plug-vNIC.

Anyway is to disable to avoid accidentally remove it the vNIC, you can disable the connection to hot network card following this procedure:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=1012225&sliceId=1&docTypeID=DT_KB_1_1&dialogID=64244650&StateID=0%200%2067543541

The steps above does not affect snap-ins not to hot memory/cpu.

  • Run the Workstation 8 under ESXi 5.0?

Quick question: is it possible to run a virtual Windows on ESXi 5.0 machine and then run 8 Workstation with 64-bit VM nested?

For example, I want to run:

    1. ESXi 5.0: on physical hardware
    2. Virtual MACHINE running on ESXi 5.0: running Windows 7 64 - bit with VMware Workstation 8
    3. Virtual MACHINE under VMware Workstation 8: running ESXi 5.0
    4. Virtual MACHINE running on nested ESXi 5.0: running Red Hat Linux 6.2 64-bit

  • ESXi Network Setup 4 nic

    Hello

I'm currently setting up a new environment of ESXi 4.1. I have 4 NIC on each host. I have seen many different discussions on the separation of vmotion/management. However, I do not think what is ideal with the current network adapter configuration because should I choose to use 2 network cards for management and redundancy of management.

That's why I think, I separate the 4 network cards on two different switches and on each one I create two trunks (or to cisco etherchannel) while both of these trunks includes 50% of the EPS to a single host. Should I choose to spend 2 network cards on management (one for each switch) I no longer have the ability to trunk/etherchannel to the switch and going so lose the two redundancy on this specific switch and the additional bandwidth, I get by both trunking interfaces.

    Any ideas on this subject?

    / Kris

The only way I could think it would be with a managed switch making the port tcp based QoS on, I'm pretty sure that the management and the vMotiontraffic will be on different ports for what are your servers.

It will depend on your brand, a model of switch and how it built of UZ ACL / Classes but it should be fairly easy to build given the level of the managed layer 3.

The question is whether he can do this level of control of frame/packet without too general.

  • Shows poor drive on a virtual machine of SBS 2008 under ESXI 4.1

    Hi all

I'll be back with a question on the locations of files vmdk and best practices.

With my colleague a great discussion raised about vmdk locations for a virtual machine that runs a heavy installation of SBS 2008. Where to place the files vmdk on the data store, and how to optimize for best performance.

This is the context. We recently bought a ML350 G6 server with 2 * RAID1 SAS 10 k. We have installed ESXI 4.1 on the first RAID1 array (datastore1) and the second RAID1 array, we created datastore2.

On the ESXI server, we have created a VM SBS2K8. And here is the discussion:

We have configured the vitual HDD for this virtual machine as follows:

    DATASTORE1:

Next to the ESXI installation, we created 1 vmdk where we have installed OS by VM SBS2K8 partition

    DATASTORE2:

We have created the 2nd vmdk where we have installed the DATA by VM SBS2K8 partition

For your information, directly after the installation we moved the log files and database Exchange on the second partition on DATASTORE2

Everything was nice during installation of the virtual machine, also during the installation of SBS 2008. The problems came just after the end of the import of the pst files in the Exchange database (+ / 20 GB for pst all together).

The virtual machine is so slow, when we try to copy, backup files locally. I checked the performance graph in VSphere Client when we copied the files or backup. The disk latency, data store, virtual disks to the level has exploded.

This is a point that the console has become completely insensitive during summits...

My opinion about it, is that it would be better to put 2 vmdk for virtual machine on DATASTORE2, but maybe I'm wrong. That's why I post here we are again.

All the recommendations, advice, are welcome. I don't know if the problem comes from the design of the virtual machine itself or we forgot something during the installation.

Is there a good literature on the vmdk files? Location, design...

Thank you for all your help on this point,

    Michael

It sounds like you bought the DL350 G6 with P410i controller but no BBWC/FBWC not attached to the writeback operation. Without BBWC/FBWC, you will generally see less of ~ 10-20 MB/s.

Place the operating system partition and data on different data stores in this case makes no difference at all.

  • Core2Duo processor will support vmotion/HA under ESXi 4?

I want to create a learning laboratory vSphere 4 at home using 2 physical hosts and 1 OpenFiler for vm storage, and a gigE switch decent.

I followed the guidelines in the 'Maximum vSphere' book, the hcl whitebox, research/reading here.

Since this is just a learning laboratory and not the production, I do not need a lot of power and want to save money. Want something quiet/silent I am looking at workstations not servers.

With this in mind, I'm thinking a couple of HP DC7700c.

Does anyone know if their cpu spec (core2duo E660 with VT and EM64T) supports operations such as vmotion and HA?

I studied these features of vmware and they say that the processors must match, and considerations of storage/nic are mentioned as well. But I'm a little fuzzy if I face a Xeon processor do vmotion and/or HA? Or will a core2duo humble work VT ok?

I'm not planning to make the RUN on these hosts, and if the NETWORK adapter does not work I can pop in an Intel pro/1000 pcie for cheap (probably 2port for now, 4 maybe later)

Although some people say this HP model comes with a card Intel PRO/1000 PT PCIe Gigabit.

Also, I'll probably start ESXi 4 usb thumbdrive.

The motherboard goes to 8 GB max, which is fine for now. Once again, not planning on executing lots of virtual machines simultaneously. More than just familiarize themselves with the operations of vSphere 4.

Here is an example of a system with 4 GB of RAM on ebay for $250 ($30 shipping cost)

    -Thanks for all the tips

    No mate problem.

  • ESXi 4.1 connection NIC 0 to NIC 2 to a Port DHCP and static IP address

I have a Dell Blade M610 I recently put in place with ESXi 4.1 Software. I have the Management Console, NIC 0, a static IP address, but when I connect to a DHCP Port to NIC 1 I lose the ability to connect to the console of the VSphere Client. I get "connection failed". Remove the DHCP connection works and I can log in and manage the server.

    Question-

What settings am I missing, that will allow me to connect it to a static IP Port and a DHCP Port at the same time?

The static IP addressed Port is behind a firewall on a subnet to isloated. The DHCP Port is on the Production network. A point to note - while IP address static on an isolated network, the TCP/IP Port, which allows you to talk to the domain controller to add from the PC to the field, is open. Most of the other Ports TCP/IP is disabled.

I would like to know if it is possible to realize that I need to create virtual machines to be used on the remote subnet, as well as on the Production side of the network.

Is there a reason for the group "DHCP VMkernel" VMkernel ports on vSwitch1? If this is not the case, remove this port group. It is not necessary to connect to the network of the VM.

  • How to make a CD available USB drive VMS as a USB under ESXi 5.5

    Hi people:

I discovered a possible problem with ESXi 5.5 which I hope someone knows a way to get around.  I plugged a USB CD/DVD drive in an ESXi host 5.5 current enforcement in the expectation that I would be able to assign to a virtual machine as a USB device.  However, it has not shown as a USB device is available.  Also, it did not show as a host device that I could assign to a virtual CD/DVD device.  I rebooted the host and then the CD/DVD USB drive present themselves as a host device that I could assign to a virtual CD/DVD device.  Of course, the problem is that I don't want to have to restart the host whenever I want to connect a physical to a virtual machine CD/DVD player, and I don't want to let the reader of CD/DVD USB connected to the host all the time I use it for other things as well (the host has not its own CD/DVD drive).

So I guess my question is:

    (1) is there a way to say ESXi a newly connected CD/DVD USB drive is intended to be a USB device that can be connected to the virtual machines, or

    (2) is there a way to force rescan USB devices for USB CD/DVD players to demand and available as a host device to be assigned to a virtual CD/DVD device without a restart ESXi?

I hope that there is some configuration settings, I do not know on which control this behavior.

    Suggestions welcome.

Ok.  I found the answer.  Guess I didn't have a good enough search until I posted.

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=1027415

Basically, you need to restart the daemon spend after you have added the device USB CD/DVD:

    restart the /etc/init.d/hostd

from the console service.  Which causes ESXi to rescan USB devices and CD/DVD USB drive is available to be mapped as a host device on a virtual CD drive of the virtual machine.  It is not as good as to be able to use it immediately, but at least it does not require the host be restarted each time.

  • Cannot start the physical machine converted to a virtual machine under ESXi 4.0

    Hi all

I have 2 has with the material below

Dell optiplex 755 2.4 Qcore 4 GB of RAM and 160 GB of HARD drive

A performer with ESXi 4.0 other runs with Windows 2003.

I tried to convert physical machine with "Vmware Vcenter converter Stand alone" 4.0.1 build 161434

I used the tool on the source machine and by another machine on the network.

The two process converts the physical machine to a virtual machine successfully without any errors.

After conversion, the virtual machine cannot start, and shows only a small slider that is not flashing too.

The physical machine have a single partition of 160 GB

The space currently used on the physical machine is 26 GB.

I reduced the size of the HARD drive to virtual computer with fix / light available in 40 GB.

point to make here is that the ESX have only 160 GB HDD, so he will not be able to copy all 160 GB because of which I am reducing the 40 GB HARD drive

I converted a few other physical machines with 40 GB HARD drive and they work well after the conversion.

Any sugessions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Sunil,

Let me know the drive selected in the custom option controller.

    Thank you

(relative config as monitor.virtual_exec material = monitor.virtual_mmu = software has been tested with no results)

    Thank you for the time

Fix.  It is possible to use the HV virtualized under ESXi 5.0 on systems without EPT/IVR, but not recommended, due to underperformance miserably.  When we officially launched the functionality in ESXi 5.1, we decided to not support the hosts without EPT/IVR, because the feature was not the quality of the products.
