Change what program files open with
I tried to run a binary program with Java Se and accidentally had the race all similar programs with this program and it has changed from a majority of the programs on my computer to run with this and now none of them work at all. I was wondering if there is an easy way to restore them to the original program.
Hello
The best way to solve this problem would be to run the Windows system restore. If you have Norton Internet Security installed, you must disable the Tamper Norton Protection as shown in step 2, on the link below.
http://us.Norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docURL=20091112171719EN&LN=en_US
Once you are done, turn off the PC. Windows system restore is usaully better run in Mode without failure. Tap away at f8 that you start the PC to enter the Windows Recovery Console. Use the arrow keys to select Safe mode and press ENTER. When it has loaded, on the Start Menu, click principally made programs, accessories, click System Tools and run the system restore. Choose a restore point before you changed the file association and then proceed to the restoration. When you are finished, Windows will restart normally.
Kind regards

Trying to open the desktop icons, get the message asking you what program to open it with XP
trying to open anything either on the desktop or the taskbar im asked what program to open with. does anyone know what program opens the files?
Hi worley5153,
1. you remember to make changes to the computer, after which the issue started?
2. This only happens to you trying to open programs that use desktop shortcuts?
3. are you able to open programs using its real .exe (executable)?
4. What is the full error message?
I suggest that you try the following Microsoft Fixit and/or the steps from the following links and see if it helps:

You receive an error message when you try to start a program that has the an.exe file name extension

All files opening with the same program?
Earlier today, I went to open a .zip with WinRar file. I've done this before and nothing is wrong, but this time, I noticed that all my desktop icons have changed and each of them were by opening with WinRar. It is especially annoying because I managed to download a Spanish version of WinRar somehow and do not include any of the popups.
I saw others asking the same thing and answers telling to go in Control Panel > programs > default programs > Set Program Access and computer by default, but I can't get there, because I don't know what program I open with.
I don't know if this has any sense at all and I feel stupid for not knowing all this, but some help would be appreciated.Hello
Most likely, you have associated shortcuts (.lnk files) with WinRAR. Although it is also possible that you have associated executables (.exe files) too (or instead). Fortunately, both can be fixed.
Here on this page is a list of all common file types.
http://www.SevenForums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.htmlScroll down and look for LNK files, click on him and it will download a file from the registry. Save this file to your desktop and run it to import the registry changes. Restart when it's done and I hope that it will be all solved.

Why all my programs and files open with Microsoft word?
All my programs and files open with Microsoft Word and I need to know how to change that?
I've seen that happen before when opening a program via a shortcut (for example. LNK file), you are asked what type of program to open it with. After Word selection using the Select a program from a list of programs installedand check always use the selected program to open this type of file, the Word document referenced by the shortcut of origin opens in Word, as it should.
The problem is that now all shortcuts (for example. LNK files) on the desktop or in the browser will want to be opened by Word. This is known as a file association. . The same condition can occur if you have performed these actions on one. JPG or even a. EXE, but the. LNK explanation is much more likely.
This has happened enough that a small utility was written to cancel the. LNK file association was created. There is a registry hack to do this, but I recommend the utility unLNK for its ease of use.
I used to send people on another site to download this utility, but this site has become confused with all the ads and fake download links. I put a copy on by SkyDrive own here.
Just download, then use the utility to unassociate the. LNK files for the user or globally delete the file type and let windows rebuild a new default.

"c:\program files" opens at startup.
Hi all, thank you in advance for your help.
I am running win xp home edition. When I boot the dir 'c:\program files' opens automatically. Note that I do not mean c:\program files\common files. the dir, who opens is "c:\program files" with three word in the dir documents. so my question is sorta twofold. Why what is happening and how to stop it from happening? Thanks again, ChrisIt works like a charm for this problem.
I want to offer thanks to a hacked Silbylaw guys for this fix."And well, here's the deal. You have this stupid coming folder when you start?
C:\Program Files\Fichiers
The reason is that the registry is reading through the entries and as the previous poster said, there is no quotes around C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec\... etc.
whats going to happen, is that windows will read the value until it can load this thing his tent to load (in this case, you want to load ccapp.exe or something else).
BUT here's the big thing, it will read until it CAN open something (if your value is not in brackets).
In this case, it is open C:\Program Files\Common because he got to that part of the value and said ' OK, well, I can open this folder! It is this value that finished playing! »
Now, the thing is, this folder C:\Program Files\Common does not usually exist and honestly has NO purpose! It is empty. Delete it! This is what caused the problems.
I did a test with this, I got a computer that works very well with Norton and everything, then I simply created a folder named C:\Program Files and did a reset.
All of a sudden wasn't Norton, and the folder popped up at startup.
Delete the folder, reset, things worked fine.
Add quotes to the registry values is a fix, but it is only temporary. What happens when you install several programs and they have values not in square brackets, in C:\Program Files\Common Files\... etc? The same problem will occur.
This is not unusual as far as I can guess. If you have created a folder named C:\Program then you'd have the same problem, but this time a fodler called C:\Program would open at startup, and all of your registration keys starting with C:\Program Files\... etc startup fails.
So in conclusion, the problem is not norton or your firewall, or everything you think it can be. Your unlisted registry values are normal, they will work on a computer without the strange folder.
The problem lies in the way the bed registry values of unlisted registry and this being combined with a folder that has no purpose and screw everything up. (C:\Program Files)
I have accumulated my brain for about an hour with this problem, and after doing some research and experiments, it is my last conclusive answer.CAUSE: Setup created Sloppy 'C:\Program Files' for no reason
SOLUTION: Delete the folder "C:\Program Files". Leave your registry database as it is! »

Windows 7 last updated PS CC. Happening since I have updated to 15.5. Right click on a jpg file, open with... Photoshop is longer in the list. I can, find and select photoshop.exe but the file will not open in Photoshop. I also disabled the "always use the selected box...»
I can locate PS and select but it does not open PS I have just crossed my registry and find indicators in the wrong directory for PS cc2015.5. 2015 has been uninstalled when I updated via the Cloud application. Apparently Adobe does too well clean the registry. Will restart and see what happens.
Change all entries in registry for Photoshop CC 2015 to Photoshop CC 2015.5 fixed the problem.

How to get Photoshop CC 2015 to open an existing picture. When I go to FILE > open with CC do not appear in the programs
Sound like you may be using Windows. Please check your windows Photoshop.exe registry key which version of Photoshop is open and edit with? I remember that mine have been updated to 2015 CC but I changed the back ventilated at the 2014 to CC are many bugs in 2015 of CC. I also changed my Windows file associations to open with CC 2014. I left Adobe Bridge file types associations 2015 CC. There are simply too many places in Windows systems which appear to be involved with open with and file Associations.
