Changing the name of a Machine virtual plurarite

Hello

I have a VM basis I copy and change the folder name to reflect its content. The problem is that I get the same name in the VMware bar on top.

The Question is how to change the display name?

I use VMware Player 2.5. I don't have a VMware Workstation.

Welcome to the forums.

Open the .vmx file in your folder with Notepad.

Search:

displayName = "VMNAME".

Change to reflect what you want to display.

Save the file and restart VMware Player.

See you soon,.

  • How can I change the names of directory of virtual machine in VMWare ESXi data storage?

    I've always used host names, but I have changed several times, since the structure is bigger and I now 25 virtual machines. I started renaming to v, s, w - and then their hostname.

    For now, the data store directory is a real mess without the new structure and it bothers me. Is it possible to rename directories? Perhaps using vcenter? I would like to see a beautiful tree as: DWT-win2003, centos5 tpl, tpl-debian6, s-server01, server02-s, w-exchange01, w-mssql01, just as I renamed it to VMS. I tried the migration option, but it only allows for migration between host data warehouses and not to rename the directory that hosts the virtual machine.

    How can I change the my data store directory structure? I have considered changing the paths and edit vmx files to correct the paths, and then add servers to be inventoried. But I don't really know if this can be done without penalty or if there is a better solution.

    the easiest way, continuously needs storage vMotion of the guest.  It renames the folder and the underlying file for the same as the name of object of vCenter. If you don't have much storage vMotion, then turn off the prompt and do a cold migration.

  • Add virtual machines to a data store while changing the name?

    I am trying to create a virtual machine in standby (or more, I do not have a final number) in a second datacenter.  The goal is to have a copy of a group of virtual machines updated once a week as a relief.

    I'll use our SAN replication to keep them up-to-date, so once a week, I stop all virtual machines in the data store, remove them from the inventory and remove the data store.  Then on the side of SAN, I'll create a new copy of the data store, then add this data store to vSphere.  We will do a few rounds of network to ensure we have not any change in the network that should be taken in the virtual machine.

    The only changes to the virtual machine that needs to be done, are changing the vSwitch is logged in, that I understood, and to rename the virtual machine, either before being added, or when it is added.  Since it is a copy of a virtual machine running, I'm not able to add all virtual machines to the new data store.  I need either change the name of the virtual machine before being added, or when it is added.  All I have to do to change the name is add something like - backup at the end of the name of the virtual machine.

    Is it reasonably simple way to do this?  It seems that he was promised that we could do that and now I need to find a way to make it work.

    Thank you

    You can search the data for the VMX store you want to register a script like the one you'll find in VMX Raiders revisited.

    To change the name of the virtual machine, you will need to replace the line that contains the New - VM cmdlet with something like this

    $newName = $VMXFile.DatastoreFullPath.split('/')[1].Split('.')[0]New-VM -VMFilePath $path -Name ($newName + "-backup") -VMHost $ESXHost -Location $VMFolder -RunAsync

  • Script to change the name of the file to the virtual machine and its associated files

    Hello

    I'm looking for a script to change the name of the virtual machine in virtual center and also change it has associated file names in the data store to match file name of virtual machine. But the vmdk file will contain a descriptor which maps the - flat.vmdk file. So not sure that we can achieve this through a script.

    Thanks in advance!

    Not really as much as I know.

    The advantage of the svMotion is renamed it the files (.) VMX, VMDK,...) For you.

    The only alternative would be the command line. See Duncan Howto: renaming a virtual computer.

    With the help of the plink.exe tool which could possibly be scripted.

  • How to change the name of VirtualSwitch without running virtual MAchines of braking?

    Does anyone know how to change the name of the virtual switch (used by VM) without braking the VM running in this cluster?

    The best way to do this without losing network connectivity is add a group of ports with the new name and connect the virtual machines to the new group of port and when the initial group of port is empty remove - remember that it's the port group named not the vswitch.

  • Virtual PC/XP Mode is asking me my name & the password. I think it says XPMUser and wants to answer me with a password. I want to change the name and create a password. I have never created a.

    I have not created anything yet he keeps asking for a password and display name is XPMUser, I believe.  How I can change this option to create a password also.  My file is listed as XPMUser under.   c:/Documents and Settings/XPMUser I have this file.  Who has my name there instead and if so how to change the name and create a password?

    Thank you

    When you install Windows XP Mode, it automatically creates a user named XPMUser account.  If you want to use a different name:

    1. log in as that of XPMUser.
    2. create a new computer administrator account with the name that you want.
    3. close XPMUser.
    4 log in to the new account and create a password.

    You can then remove the XPMUser account if you wish.

  • Change the name of files and folders in data warehouses

    Is it safe while a virtual machine is running to change the name of the VMDK files and folders in a data store?

    I discovered that a VMS VMDK files have a different name for the virtual machine itself, then someone changed the name of the virtual machine after you have created the records

    I had to do it a few times, will try to document the process that I follow.  If you have many warehouses of data, then make a note of what data store, the machine is in.  The next step is to unregister the virtual machine from vCenter / ESXi

    Then, you need to enable SSH on your ESXi host

    Use Putty or something similar for you connect to the ESXi host

    Run the following commands (in italics)

    cd vmfs/volumes / that is, if the data store that contains the virtual computer is named datastore1 then you would run cd/vmfs/volumes/datastore1

    Then run ls to verify that the virtual machine file is here

    Renaming of files in virtual machine using Cold Storage Migration

    Virtual machine files can be renamed on the fly when cold Migration is initiated from the vSphere Client, only documents of the virtual machine are renowned.

    To rename the files:

    Log on to the VMware vSphere Client.

    Locate the virtual machine in your inventory to the host.

    Right-click the virtual machine, and then click Rename.

    Change the name of the virtual machine as required.

    Perform a cold migration to a new virtual machine data store.

    For more information, see:

    For ESXi/ESX 4.x, see Migration cold in the Guide of Administration of vSphere Datacenter.

    For ESXi/ESX 3.5, see Migration cold in basic management Guide.

    When the migration is complete, the files of the virtual machine, the name of the virtual machine configured in step 4.

    Note: If a virtual directory already exists on the data store with the same name, then the virtual target machine is placed in a new directory with annexed _1.

  • How to change the name of a Workflow Runtime

    Hi all

    We have a self-service the Orchestrator-based portal and it works fine. We have deployed since January over 300 virtual machines on this portal.

    I would change the name of the workflow performed on behalf of the user who started the race. I have an action (getCurrentLdapUser) where I get the name of the applicant.

    The problem is to find a race for the title of all applications, because the tracks are named as the workflow and only the date and the time are.

    Anyone has any idea if this is possible? If the applicant submits the application and the workflow run begins to change the name of this on behalf of the applicant + date and time?

  • Change the name of a data store?

    Hello

    Is it possible to change the display name of a data store NFS I have 8 nodes in a cluster connected to?  This is for aesthetic reasons only - consistency of the naming convention.  Just curious, if I renamed the store of data for data store in vSphere VCenter, did change the display name for each host?  Or I have to change the display name to each host using the "hosts and Clusters".  Just curious to know if I can do that, while virtual machines are run with no negative effect... or should I stop literally all of the virtual machines to do this.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

    You can change the name of data warehouses (NFS, iSCSI, FC etc.) at any time and without any negative effects.

    Just right click, rename it to your heart's content!

  • Change the name of the client VM with PowerShell

    Hello

    I'm in a bit of trouble with a script PowerCLI so maybe some of you can help me because I just watched using PowerCLI. I work for a software company witch it assign tests, and I need to configure virtual machines in our data center. I managed to create a script for virtual machine cloning, but I need someone else to change the name of the guest OS (XP, 2008, 7) with the name of the virtual machine that appears in vCenter. I found a command "-OSCustomizationSpec", but it does not work for me ( http://communities.vmware.com/message/1562254 ).

    Thanks in advance

    Greetings, @adispy-

    Background, in case you didn't know: to use the parameter - OSCustomizationSpec to New-VM or Set-VM, you must have an OSCustomizationSpec (OSC) of some sort.  A couple of ways that you can create a CSOS: in vCenter via either the client vSphere (Home-> Manager Customization specifications), or in PowerShell via New-OSCustomizationSpec.  This cmdlet also lets you create a non-persistent OSC that exists only in your PowerShell session.

    Once you have a valid OSC, you can apply it to the new VM to deploy time (using New - VM either clone an existing virtual machine or to deploy from a model), or after the new virtual machine is deployed using Set-VM.

    Hi Tim,.

    as mentioned Christian there is no set way implement (known) to do.

    Using JDBC you can get following result (using the input text as 01, 02, 03, 04, 05 parameter):

    Between 04 and 05, there was a restart of the service!

    Here the sample (DO NOT USE in PRODUCTION)

    var main = new JDBCConnection();
    var con;
    try  {
     con = main.getConnection("jdbc:jtds:sqlserver://192.168.0.33:1433/VCO41","sa","yourPWD");
     System.log( "Connection to database successful" );

     var stat = con.prepareStatement("select title from VMO_Workflowtoken where id='" + workflow.id + "'");
     result = stat.executeQuery();
     if (result.next());
     {
      System.log (result.getStringAt(1));
     }
     stat = con.prepareStatement("update VMO_Workflowtoken set title='ChangeTester" + Text + "' where id='" + workflow.id + "'");
     result = stat.executeUpdate ();
     if (result == 1)
     {
      System.log ("Title changed!");
     }
     else
     {
      System.log ("Title changed faild");
     }
    }
    catch( ex )  {
     throw "Connection to database failed (Reason: " + ex + ")";
    } finally {
     if (con) {
      con.close();
     }
    }

    Alternatively, you can wait a while (in my case about 15 min) and updates to display without restarting.

    Kind regards, Andreas
