Cloning of my HDD on an external drive.

I use Windows XP on a HP Pavilion a305w. How to create a clone of my HDD on an external USB drive, including files used by Windows? I get an error message when you try to copy a file used by Windows?

HerbHill,

As I said, if you were to buy a hard drive Seagate Maxtor (or), the free Seagate disc Wizard program would do the job.

Suggest you read the manual mentioned that I linked. The manual guides you through all the steps.

  • With the help of Windows Easy Transfer - need to transfer the old HARD drive to new computer - old HDD attached as external drive for the new usb port of the computer - help

New computer installed Windows 7 and gave me an option to use Windows easy transfer to transfer files, data, programs, etc. from my old computer.  All I have from the old computer's hard drive; a lightning strike fried either food or his mother by car.  I have attached the hard as a disk to the new computer using the usb cable provided with the external hard drive case.  It is recognized as drive E: on the new computer.

Trying to follow the instructions given by the Windows Easy Transfer software.  Get the software/folder from the old hard drive (drive E), but trying to run the software that I can't seem to do anything on the old disk.  When asked what is the former or the new computer - I respond to old, but no new file is created for the transfer.  When I answer again, a new file is created on the new computer (rather than the old HDD) and then he transferred again to new.  I can't create a file of whatever it is I want to transfer from the old HDD.

I can't use an easy transfer cable because the old computer does not only the hard drive.  I can't connect to a network for the same reason.  I only have the hard that I can attach to the new computer.  But I can't get the new computer to process the old hard drive separately for transfer purposes.  The only other option I can think of is to attach the old HDD to another computer, and then try to run the software in this way, but I don't want just the stuff on the old hard drive a copy to the other computer.

Can anyone help?  Suggest how to get the old hard drive files, data, transferred etc. to the new computer.  What are the steps?

    Thank you.

Do yourself a favor, with the old drive connected externally, in the browser, simply copy the data files to the location of Documents of the PC win7. You can not copy programs, they need to be reinstalled from media origonal. You can copy all the downloaded files instalation

You may need to take possession of your old documents folders - see win help to find out how

  • Wear an external drive, back to my laptop programs

After my OS (windows XP) crashed last week, I was able to download my HDD on an external drive.

Tonight, I did a clean reboot of windows xp. Now, I would like to reinstall the programs on my computer. Can some help me understand how to get programs on my laptop?

    Thank you!

    Hi AndrewLightman,

    · Have what measures you taken to back up programs?

    · You save the settings of the program or programs?

    · Format the hard drive before installing the operating system are you running?

You can copy the settings program and data from the external hard drive on the hard disk.

See the links below: moving files and settings to a new computer that is running Windows XP: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/winxp/migrate.mspx

You will need to re - install the programs on the computer. Link: Installation of programs: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/hwandprograms/installprog.mspx

  • External drive to use for cloning

    Hi all

It is possible to clone r12 EBS uses the external USB hard drive?

Due to a low disk space to make the process of preclone, so I want to get an external HDD (via USB) to make this preclone on the server (apps and db level) PROD. After finish the process preclone on the PROD server, just go up this external hard drive on the target server and copy the data from the PROD server that is with the proclone process.

    Is this possible?

    B. Rgds,
    Sunny

It is possible to clone r12 EBS uses the external USB hard drive?

It is possible as long as you are satisfied with the performance.

Because of the disk space to make the process of preclone,.

The preclone process does not require that the amount of storage, so it shouldn't be a problem.

So I want to get an external HDD (via USB) to make this preclone on the server (apps and db level) PROD. After finish the process preclone on the PROD server, just go up this external hard drive on the target server and copy the data from the PROD server that is with the proclone process.

    Is this possible?

Still not sure why you want to use an external drive to run preclone. If you mean that it is just to copy the files to your instance of production of this external hard drive and mount this drive for your target servers, then it is possible - please note that the performance would not be one expected when comparing it to an internal hard drive.

  • Cloning of an external drive for Time Machine

If I want to create a clone of my HD bootable, can I use an existing external drive that is used for the TM? Or would I need to create a partition in the drive and the clone to this partition? Or, finally, if you clone a drive with SuperDuper! or CCC or backup Guru they will make the clone bootable for you? TX

    1. Yes, but you must use a separate drive; You can fail at any time.

    2. If you choose to use a single drive (see #1), you need to partition. The backup Time Machine will use eventually all free space on the volume, holding it.

    3 Yes, unless otherwise stated.

My advice to you is to renounce the backup utility built-in to Windows XP (NTBackup.exe) and you get a disk imaging or disk cloning application.

If you have a Western Digital hard drive, you can get it from WD (http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119) or you can get it separately (this is not an exhaustive list and is in no particular order):

  • MacBookPro successfully updated for the SSD but old disk HARD not accessible as external drive

    OK people,

Successfully, I upgraded my MBP late 2012 to 1 TB SSD with the help of the community here. Thank you.

My old drive was an 8.1 El Capitan\Win Bootcamp and worked pretty well without fault.

I used the disk utility to clone the OSX partition and did a fresh install of Win10 through BootCamp.

    So far so good.

However, my plan was gradually transfer the files from the old partition Win 8.1 in the score of Win10 that I need them.

That is the problem. Win10 OS or my OSX recognize the old Win8.1 HARD disk partition. However, they both recognize the old OSX partition.

The two operating systems (OSX\Win10) was format\Initialise the old HDD when connected through a USB enclosure.

As a test, I swapped the old disk to the MBP and it started actual Win8.1 therefore the partition is accessible. Actually I'm in it starts now as I type this message.

Watch Windows Disk Manager partition as a RAW rather than NTFS where the desire to get in shape. I am reluctant to start playing with partitioning\recovery tools because I can access the drive while having to open the MBP, but it is accessible.

Is there a reason why the original HARD drive is not accessible as a normal external drive?

ATM my only option I'm looking at is a copy of right of ALL files in the Windows 8.1 on another disk partition so that I can easily access the files.

    Ideas or suggestions appreciated.

Try ejecting the disc (use disk utility), reboot and reconnect the drive.

  • Why the files are stored on an external drive not appearing in the "other" classification on my iMac HD?

I'm running OS X version 10.11.4 on an iMac, retina 5 K 27-inch/3.5 GHz Intel Core i5 with 24 GB RAM/1 TB HDD and I have had for about a year, although I migrate some files over my old machine, but most were on an external.  I have almost all my larger files on an external drive 2 TB - for the most part hi res .eps, .jpeg, .png.

I run CleanMyMac 3 as a utility. When I saw recently that I had more than 600 GB of 'others' I decided I have to spend the day to clean my files and machine - and have therefore been sucked into this rabbit hole.

After cleaning duplicate files, empty the caches, removing unused applications and clean the external hard drive, I have still 570 GB of "other".  When you click on the bar in their own my Mac, it gives you a list of what is included in each of the classifications of file storage.  I understand, including all Documents to plain text, PDF and even files .docx, ect...

what I don't understand is why:

1 .pages (documents created in the clean Apple program) are not classified with documents, rather than as 'other '.

    2. why each of my .eps files that are stored on an external drive also claim space on my Mac?  It would potentially be the preview images displayed in the Finder? And if so, why it store a snapshot of the same size as the actual file?

AND, most importantly, I can recover some of the disk space consumed by the huge amount of .eps files?

    Thank you

    Christina

'CleanMyMac' is a scam and a frequent cause of instability and poor performance. Depending on which version you have, the developer's instructions may not completely uninstall. Please follow these instructions, then do as below.

Back up all data before proceeding.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select this option:

    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Agent.plist

Right-click or Ctrl-click on the highlighted line and select

Services ▹ reveal in Finder (or just to reveal)

the contextual menu.*, a file can open with a selected item. If so, move the selected item to the trash. You may be prompted for administrator login password.

    Repeat with this line:

    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Agent

Restart the computer and empty the trash.

You may also delete one or more of these elements in the same way:

    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac.helperTool.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac.volumeWatcher.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist

Never install "CleanMyMac" or something like that.

    * If you do not see the item context menu copy the selected text in the Clipboard by pressing Control-C key combination. In the Finder, select

Go ▹ go to the folder...

from the menu bar and paste it into the box that opens by pressing command + V. You won't see what you pasted a newline being included. Press return.

    B

For the other category in the display of information storage, see this support article. If the display appears to be inaccurate, try to rebuild the Spotlight index.

Empty the trash if you don't have it already done. If you use iPhoto, emptying his trash internal everything first:

    ▹ iPhoto empty the trash

    In pictures:

▹ Show of the recently deleted ▹ file delete all

Do the same thing in other applications like Aperture, with an internal feature of the trash. Then, restart the computer. Temporarily, which will free up space.

According to the documentation from Apple, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the boot volume (as shown in the Infolog) for normal operation, not the mythical 10%, 15% or any percentage. You also need enough space to allow the growth of the data over. There is little or no advantage in terms of performance to get more free space than the minimum Apple recommends. Storage space you'll never use is wasted space.

See this support article for some easy ways to free up storage space. A common waste of space is old backups iTunes to mobile devices. As shown in this support article, select the devices tab in the iTunes preferences window, select the backup that you want to remove and click on delete the backups. Keep at least a backup of each device you use yet.

You can use a tool such OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore the volume and discover what is take up space. You can also delete files with it, but not unless you don't know you know what you remove and that all data is stored safely. This means that you have several backups, not one. Note that CESO works with OS X 10.8 or later.

Deletion of files inside a photo library or iTunes will damage the library. Such a library should be changed within the application that created it. It is the same for e-mail files.

Go further than if the problem is not resolved by the steps above.

ODS cannot see the whole file system when you run simply by double-clicking; He sees only the files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you must run it as root.

Back up all the data now.

Install the application in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it runs.

Triple-click any where in the text line below on this page to select, then copy the selected text in the Clipboard by pressing Control-C key combination.

    security execute-with-privileges /A*/OmniDiskSweeper.app/*/M*/* 2>&-

Launch the Terminal application integrated in one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first letters of his name in a Spotlight search. Select from the results (it should be at the top).

☞ In the Finder, select go utilities ▹ of menu bar or press the combination of keys shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Paste in the Terminal window by pressing command + V. You will be asked for your login password.

The application window opens behind other open windows. When you scan a volume, the window will finally show all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.

I do not recommend that you make a habit of doing. Do not delete anything as root. If something should be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then remove by safer alternatives. If in doubt, leave it alone or ask for advice.

When you are finished with the app, he quit and also to leave Terminal.

    Hello

Do you have the same connection error an another USB 2.0 external HARD drive or a USB flash memory stick this laptop?
    Test this
Maybe this problem of HARD drive.

USB 2.0 provides a power of 500 my if an external USB HDD or USB device needs more power, a problem may appear.
In such cases its recommended to connect a USB hub with an external power supply between the laptop and the USB device

  • Recently, Portege R500 does not recognise external drives

Vista SP2 - fully implemented to date.
I have 2 external drives to backup-last used about a month it is a Maxtor and Seagate.
Now neither are listed in the Solution Explorer, even if the computer is knows they are there because the two happen when I use the icon 'remove '.

Both drives work in another office of Windows 7, and all ports USB R500 with a USB key and SD card reader. Have you tried the update of drivers.
Paragon Hard Disk Manager knows they are there as well and lists their properties.

However, Paragon will not allow them to be used for the backup. Any ideas?

    Hello

You can try to remove the USB host and USB controllers from Device Manager.
Restart the unit. USB controllers should be recognized automatically. Then connect one of the hard drives USB ports USB portable s and check if the device would be recognized.

You can also try to restart the * plug-and-play service.
You will need to go to computer management (right click on computer and select Manage).
New window appears, then here you must choose Services.

Choose * Plug-and-Play * and disable it (if enabled).
Activate the service once more, and then connect the USB HDD.

I have a Toshiba PX1267E - 1 32-hard external drive 320 GB which keeps restarting itself whenever I try to copy large files.

The whole device became unusable as most of the things I want to backup is more than 2 GB in size.
AI? ve tried it on 2 computers to another brand and the same problems occur, less with one of the other brand but that is strange?

    Someone else had this problem?

Hi, I just wanted to ask you which files on your external HARD drive? Maybe there is a problem with it?
Another suggestion is, back up your data to another medium, go to your local dealer where you bought it and try it. If you encounter the error even by your dealer, then let them trade your car.

It s better to exchange these stuff like external HDD´s because I lost my files (music and film) since my last external drive had a headcrash. :(

    Hello!

I recently bought Stor.E Art 3 external drive - mostly because there were lines like 'Encryption' and 'Password protected'

So, how can I ask these things on the external drive? I imagined, that there is a kind of software which just request password each time I connect the HDD to PC...

But there was no software other than NTI Backup Now EZ. This backup software will do this thing?

I have beautifully OKR working for me. However, when I choose "System Recovery", it only show up with selecting in C: or D: (partitions on the drive HARD internal only). It won't let me choose backups that she herself created on my external USB HDD (f).

How can I tell OKR to select a backup created on an external USB HDD?

    Found the solution!

    1. The first partition on the USB external drive must be an Active partition FAT32.
    2. The second partition on this external drive USB (the one that stores backups OKR) must be an NTFS partition.

Once I did, OKR identified the two partitions with no problems (in the form of readers i and J :) and has been able to see these images of OKR backup and restore from them.)
