Compatibility of Procesadores y VCA

Hola,

To reach a better I think el modo EVC EVC that it requires are "Westmere", por el juego instrucciones, the pido ayuda inicialmente para saber the compatibility of host, pero los if alguien me can explain EVC is lo agradeceria, he intentado pero entenderlo tratar no lo he achieved, the plataforma esta in the VMware vSphere 5.1 U1 version.

Hola amigo,

recently he escrito UN post a VCA acerca: http://www.blogvmware.com/2013/07/activar-evc-cuando-vcenter-server-es.html

Lo puedes hacer una vez Québec habilitas el VCA, ir probando el mejor baselines.

We want to add processors Intel E5-2600v2, Ivy Bridge, to a cluster of u1 vSphere 5.5 using E7-4800, Westmere processors.

    When checking the following link,.
    http://www.VMware.com/resources/compatibility/detail.php?deviceCategory=CPU & ProductID = 64 & VCL = true

Enhanced VMotion does not seem to be supported for the Ivy Bridge in Westmere processors.

VMotion strengthened capacity Modes: Intel Merom generation

    Generation Intel® Penryn

    Intel® Nehalem-generation

    Intel Westmere generation

We read this information correctly?  Westmere and Ivy Bridge CPU VCA not compatible within the same cluster 5.5u1? If there are documents to support that they are supported, can you give the link? Thank you.

According to the specifications of VMware Compatibility Guide: cpu (you can select both processors and compare them), Intel Westmere is registered to two processors as a mode of EVC supported.

  • Sanity Check: Hardware compatibility: vMotion/CPU/VCA etc.

    Hi all

We currently have a DRS cluster with 6 hosts Dell Poweredge R610 with Intel Xeon 5540 or 5530 processors which, according to article KB (http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1991) are in Group D for the vMotion compatibility. (Nehalem-EP)

I want to add new hosts to the cluster and try again Dell R620s. These have Xeon CPU E5-2640. I can't find an article with the same level of detail for the new processors. The compatibility guide Vmware tells me that it is a Sandy bridge processor?

If I add hosts with newer processors to the cluster, be they work? Or do I have to turn on some sort of CVS mode?

If I read this article (KB VMware: best vMotion compatibility (EVC) processor support ) he gives to think that I would need to market the VCA Level2 (Nehalem). This would be 'disable' have the CPU features in the new host beyond what former processors... But what happens in 'x' time of years when all guests have disappeared - presumbaly I can then disable compatibility EVC mode so that all the features of the CPU are presented? This would have a negative impact on existing virtual machines?

Please could someone health mental check me or point me in the direction of something to reassure me?

    Thanks in advance

NB. Currently on vSphere 4.0, but the upgrade to 5/5.1 soon.

I suppose that once the VCA mode is activated, it will always be equal to the level of the 'down' (older?) (In this case Nehalem) CPU level up to what the last host with Nehalem processors is removed from the cluster.

    Yes, that's correct.

  • VCA and VMotion compatibility

I am looking for a few new ESX boxes to expand our data center of VSphere 4 current U1.

Ideally, I would buy Intel E7540 series servers because they can FT and adapt the specifications I need.

    I currently have a mix of X 5355 and E7330 ESX boxes.

DELL sales tell me that E7540 processors are not compatible with the existing X 5355 vmotion and processors E7330 (even with active CVS).

VCA and flexmigration enable me to vmotion (hot) between theses processors and processor E7540? I have the impression that the seller DELL is perhaps wrong as I thought VCA and flexmigration should mitigate the differences between these processors (obviously within reason)? Surely at least between the E7330 and the E7540?

I had a look to many documents, including the KB Article: 1003212 but still trying to find a definitive answer?

Forget DELL sales. They should be compatible under VCA VMotion (VCA's enhanced VMotion compatibility). But they are obviously not compatible FT.

    Hi all

I'm looking for clarification on the compatibility of EVC between processors.

    So I have an M3 x 3650 with X 5680 processor and I'm looking to buy a new M4 x 3650 with processor E5-2670.

My understanding of the matrix Westmere and Sandy Bridge are compatible with each other.

    Any help would be great.

    Thank you

    Trent.

wouldn't the definition of EVC to Westmere make comaptible? I think that if.

  • VCA compatibility matrix

    Hello

We plan to extend our cluster HA/DRS vSphere, currently existing three HP ProLiant DL380 G6, with a server, but it would be DL380 G7. We have CVS in vCenter activated by the following:

    EVC_vSphere.jpg

But if I followed 1003212 Knowledge Base article, say something different.

We currently have CPU xE5520, which is Nehalem. We want to add xE5645, which is Westmere.

Knowledge Base gives me red, which means that it is not taken care of. said vCenter: Westmere is OK.

Is our configuration support in this case?

    Best regards

    Marco

    Hello

We use the G6 and G7 with EVC Mode. It works without problems. And if the hardware is on the HCL, there should be no reason why it is not supported. For this purpose, you have the opportunity to use CVS. Because not all companys are in the enviable position to buy equipment for years to come.

  • vMotion compatibility

If I have two servers from different manufacturers in the same cluster DRS (Dell and HP), but both with Intel E5600 processors, are there problems with vmotion compatibility?

    See what VMware says:

Sometimes, the suppliers of processors introduced changes important architects in the same processor family (for example, 64-bit and SSE3 extensions). VMware identifies these exceptions, if it cannot guarantee a successful with vMotion migration.

    Source: the CPU compatibility requirements

    How should I treat the Intel Xeon E3 and E5 processors or Intel Xeon X-series, series E, series L processors have different review or the series of numbers (e.g., v2, v3, v4, or x 5680, x 5687, x 5690)

When you activate CVS for a cluster with Intel of E3 Xeon or Xeon E5 family processors that have different revision numbers (v2, v3, v4), a CVS base is necessary. This is due to new instruction sets is available in different revisions.  Although the processors will be the basis of CVS, it is mandatory for all processors have the same sets of instructions to virtual machines.

As for the process of Xeon with different revisions, when you turn on VCA for a cluster with Intel Xeon processors even family (for example, E56xx, X56xx, L56xx), a CVS base is necessary. This is due to new instruction sets is available in different revisions.  Although the processors will be the basis of CVS, it is mandatory for all processors have the same sets of instructions to virtual machines.

  • Regarding vSphere VCA and vMotion

    Hi all

I have several questions about vMotion and VCA, can anyone help?

    1. If I mix several types of CPU (from the same supplier of CPUS) in a vSphere without EVC cluster active, what will happen? can I vMotion VM on the host?

    2. I can vMotion VM Cluster with older CPU for the Cluster with more recent CPU? Assume that CVS is not activated on the two groups.

    3. can I vMotion VM Cluster with older CPU for the Cluster with more recent CPU? Assume that CVS is not enabled on the source cluster, but active on the destination Cluster.

    4. I can vMotion VM Cluster with older CPU for the Cluster with more recent CPU? Suppose that EVC is enabled on the source cluster, but not active on the destination Cluster.

5 can I vMotion of virtual machine of a stand-alone ESXi host on an active EVC cluster? Assume that the CPU is the same.

6 the KB "EVC and CPU compatibility FAQ" below, if we disable CVS on a cluster, the virtual machine can only be migrated to hosts with CPU even or more.

Why virtual machines is only able to move to other ESX/ESXi hosts that are in the same generation of CPU or more? It's in front of my knowledge.

VMware KB: EVC and CPU compatibility FAQ

What is the impact on vSphere features of the Cluster when I turn off the CVS mode?

To turn off the CVS on a cluster mode, it affects vSphere Cluster features in the following ways:

    • vSphere HA (High availability): vSphere HA is not affected because of the cyclic power failover virtual machines when you start on a new host. This allows the VM picking up the new ID CPU and it allows to start without problem
    • vSphere DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduler):
      • vMotion: virtual machines is only able to move to other ESX/ESXi hosts that are in the same generation of CPU or more. If the DRS is configured for fully automated, this can result in virtual machines, eventually migrating to hosts on the cluster with the generation of CPU more old where they cannot be moved via vMotion on different hosts with a newer processor generation.
      • Storage vMotion: virtual machines are able to be moved to Storage vMotion with EVC mode disabled in a cluster
    • Location of the pagefile: it is not affected.

    Thank you.

    1. If I mix several types of CPU (from the same supplier of CPUS) in a vSphere without EVC cluster active, what will happen? can I vMotion VM on the host?

    (a) you very well can vMotion virtual computers between the hosts with identical processors within the cluster.

    (b) for vMotions on different hosts, it depends on CPU instruction set parity and orientation, i.e. the older generation-> new generation or vice versa.

Consider the following: when a VM is turned on at the start, it is presented in UC sets from the physical host, where it has been turned on. It must keep these settings until the virtual machine is turned off, any host it is migrated to in the meantime. Therefore, as long as a host provides these CPU instruction sets, it can be vMotioned it. Further instructions on new hosts games is irrelevant for this and just hidden-away of the guest. So old-> new should be fine, but new-> old most likely will not work because the virtual machine works with games of additional CPU instructions that only is simply not supported by the older physical processor.

    2. I can vMotion VM Cluster with older CPU for the Cluster with more recent CPU? Assume that CVS is not activated on the two groups.

Yes, generally vMotion shall function in older generations of CPU to the most recent, the same common CPU instruction sets are supported by the destination CPU host and enabled in the BIOS.

    3. can I vMotion VM Cluster with older CPU for the Cluster with more recent CPU? Assume that CVS is not enabled on the source cluster, but active on the destination Cluster.

    4. I can vMotion VM Cluster with older CPU for the Cluster with more recent CPU? Suppose that EVC is enabled on the source cluster, but not active on the destination Cluster.

Yes, the same general vMotion as explained above requirements. If CVS is enabled on any, both or a cluster does not matter (of course provided a configured VCA level is not reverse the physical hardware capabilities 'new' and 'old').

5 can I vMotion of virtual machine of a stand-alone ESXi host on an active EVC cluster? Assume that the CPU is the same.

Yes, the same general vMotion as explained above requirements. A stand-alone host is exactly the same thing treated as a non - active EVC cluster.

  • VCA mode disabled / vmotion work?

We have 2 groups of ESXi at our facility for vSphere, vSphere is version build 5.5U1, currently most recent available.

Group 1 has Intel Xeon E7540 UC.

Group 2 is brand new and uses recently published processors Intel Xeon E7-4860 v2.

VCA is currently disabled on the two groups.

Athe's systems are listed in the VMware compatibility guide for our latest version of vSphere.

I expect this Setup to be able to live vMotion of virtual machines from the old to the new cluster without the use of CVS on either, but I assumed that the migration back to group 1 would require cluster 2 to affect the level of reference Intel EVC appropriate (Nehalem in this case).

It turns out that I am able to migrate VM direct in both directions with no apparent problems (so far), with EVC mode disabled on both groups.

Is an expected behavior or if ESXi/vCenter is somehow misreading? CPU compatibility (perhaps because the E7-4860v2 are a very recent model) or some other issue that could lead to problems with these migrations?

This is normal unless you have turned to bike the VM on the new hosts.

If a virtual machine has been powered - on on a former host and is migrated to the new cluster, it does not change the current features of the virtual machine CPU runlevel. He will continue to work with the old CPU features on the new host and is therefore able to migrate the old new host without problems, or additional AIDS such as CVS.

However, if stop you now migrated virtual machine and power it on again on new hosts, the virtual material will apply the new host CPU capabilities (or the level of EVC of cluster, but you do not apply any) and you will not be able to migrate the computer virtual return to the armies of the former cluster.

The VM lavoreranno con prestazioni inferiori. Bet cioè alla più vecchia che hai nel cluster CPU.

You can abilitare VCA Reed a VM accese, my non potrai migrare what sugli host attive con più modern finchè not the spegni cpu.

  • "Atrocious" dubbio su VCA

Ciao a tutti, ho che era di 3 ESXi cluster an in a UN quarto tempo secondo cui hoaggiunto host. Abilitai no VCA perched in theory would be no selection essere necessaria.

MI trovo con una VM che da quell'host non vuole migrare sugli altri per istruzioni cpu incompatibili. OK spenta spostata e riaccesa problema solved by ora. Pero I like EVC abilitare a questo punto.

Domanda: ho all the host VM sui 3 'vecchi. Posso abilitare VCA "a caldo" senza problemi alle VM dare? Better di if... wrong?

P.S.: he vCenter e virtuale my gira knew another cluster.

    Ciao, Tinto,.

SE he quarto nodo, nuovo quello non ha VM attive, you can abilitare EVC.

Alle VM in fruit sugli altri host will succeed non nulla.

Remember di abilitare no United Nations level di compatibility inferiore a quello delle cpu dei vecchi host.

    Ciao

I try to enable CVS mode on a cluster, but get the message "host is not allowed in the compatibility mode of the current cluster Enhanced vMotion.". Under voltage or suspension of the virtual machines on the host can use CPU features hidden by fashion. ».

I need to power all of my virtual machine to enable CVS or y at - it another way to activate?

  • VCA with processors different hearts?

    Hi all

My Cluster have four hosts ESXi with model CPU = Intel (R) Xeon E5645 of CPU @ 2.40 GHz-6 carrots. I need to add our existing stand-alone HP DL380G6 servers in the same cluster. Model of processor for the HP DL380G6 Server = Intel (R) Xeon CPU E5530 @ 2.40 GHz-4 nuclei. I know CVS remove UC has top model and create the line basis for the CPU features that are available in all of the central units and I don't know how CVS works with different physical cores of the processor? Please suggest me.

VCA or vMotion compatibility in general cares not at all on the number of cores that physical processors of your have. The layout is completely hidden from the guest, then it does not matter in a perspective of VMotion if you mix 4, 6 or 8 core hosts in a cluster.

However, what really matters, is the generation of CPU and the instructions of the respective most recent processors have as opposed to the previous.

Your Xeon 55xx processors belong to the family of Nehalem, whereas the 56xx are part of the Westmere family. Virtual machines running on processors 56xx natively (without CTS configured) or with Intel Westmere VCA base will not be able to be vMotioned on 55xx hosts.

So, you'll need the level of reference VCA of your cluster to the generation of Intel Nehalem.
