• Incorrect name appears when locking XP

  I gave an old Dell computer to a friend who was in need of a PC.  I uninstalled all my apps and docs and then implemented their applications and their docs from the old PC to mine using the files and Settings Transfer Wizard.

  Everything works fine.  I put in place of the user accounts for the levels of security, network settings, etc.  There is a small problem, however: the friend would be able to lock the PC so that when it does use it, her children do not have access to it.  Pressing the button of the Windows Logo + L, the connection name always appears with my name.  I thought, OK, maybe it's because I showed as a registered user.  Then I went into the registry and changed the name of the registered user of their.  Still no change.  I have a feeling it has to do with the default Administrator account that was set up during the installation of Windows XP.

  I am really confused as to how I can change the name so that it appears with them.  If I try to change the name to their (privileges) account with the right password, Windows remains locked.

  No, you're not correct on the built-in Administrator account. What's happened is that you have created the first user account (that is not the built-in administrator) with your name. Then when you gave to your friend, instead of making computer correctly a clean install of Windows, you just rename your user account to hers. You cannot change a user like that; account name It will be a cosmetic change only and the files/folders of the profile will be initially set up.

  Create a named correctly again, user account and copy the files/settings of the former to his.

  1 log on as a user other than the user whose you copy files to or from the profile.
  2. in Windows Explorer, click on tools, Folder Options, click the view tab, click Show files and folders, clear the box to tick Hide protected operating system files and then click OK.
  3. Locate the C:\Documents and Settings\Old_Username folder, where C is the drive on which Windows XP is installed, and where ancien_nom_utilisateur is the name of the profile to copy user data from.
  4. press and hold down the CTRL key while you click each file and subfolder in this folder, except the following files:
  * Ntuser.dat
  * Ntuser.dat.log
  * Ntuser.ini
  5. on the Edit menu, click on copy.
  6. Locate the C:\Documents and Settings\New_Username folder, where C is the drive on which Windows XP is installed, and New_Username is the name of the user

  Many variants of malware will allow a proxy server if you are unable to Internet. Go to control panel > Internet Options > connectivity tab > LAN button. If all is selected in the section Server Proxy, uncheck the box, apply/OK outside.

  2. If nothing has changed and that the computer is clean, what antivirus/security programs are you running? Have AVG 8 or Zone Alarm? These two programs have had updates that caused Internet connectivity problems. I don't recommend either of these programs, but if you want to keep check them on the mftrs.' support websites.

  3. If #2 is not applicable:

  a. unplug the router.
  b. disconnect the modem. (If you have a DOCSIS 3 modem with battery backup, press the Reset button to reset the modem so the lights go out).
  c. wait 60 seconds.
  d. plug the modem (or wait until the reboot is completed) and expect that all the lights are on.
  e. plug the router and wait until all lights are on.

  You now have an Internet connection? Otherwise:

  4. connect your computer directly to the cable/DSL modem. You now have an Internet connection? If so, there is a problem with the router. They do not last forever. Replace it.
