Original title: Microsoft is not a valid short file name

Hi, my name is Kenya Caldwell and I tried to install a program called Autocad, whenever I try to install the program, I get a message that says that Microsoft is not a valid short file name.  I received a response from Autocad, but I don't understand or know if they are correct, could someone help me?  The message from Autodesk is down below.

Error 1325: [filename] is not a valid short file name

Question

The installation fails and the following error message:

Error 1325: is not a valid short file name.

Solution

This error indicates that Microsoft® Windows® install fails to write to the target folder. The following troubleshooting suggestions may resolve the issue:

  • Check the permissions on the target installation location.
  • Check that the target location.
  • Check and remove the spaces or special characters in the installation path target. (Note: this suggestion does not apply to products based on AutoCAD® 2004 and more.)
  • If it is a deployment, make sure the target path is properly formatted (UNC) and defined in theappsetup.inf file, which is located in the folderimage .
  • If the target location is one drive other than the system drive, try to change the target in a directory on the drive system (usually the drive C).
  • Try to re-create the deployment.

  • ActiveSync: *.favorites is not a valid short file name *.

    Help me!!!

I am engineer in a DoD environment.  We had a problem with title error ".favorites is not a short file name.  The error message is displayed when a typical user with any escalated authorization attempts to run ActiveSync.  ActiveSync installs and works fine using a "Domain administrator" account rights, however once the user tries to run the program it fails during installation indicating ".favorites is not a valid short file name.

Our users do not have the right to install programs, or change the registry items, we apply DoD Stig (security technical implementation Guide)... once again, ActiveSync installed fine and runs when you use an account with permissions "Domain Admin".  When the user tries to launch activesync fails... However if I put the user in the domain admin group, run it once while it installs, then remove the user from the domain administrators group. ActiveSync works very well.

If anyone knows how to fix this please PLEASE please help me!

Answer for all those who get this error even regardless of the software:

Microsoft was absolutely "No. f ' ing ' help with this one.  Here's the answer to this question;  If you are in a corporate environment, sense permissions are controlled and restricted as in a DoD, DHS, WHS, ect... The user will need permissions to two registry keys.

    (1) [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services]

    (2) [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services]

Follow these steps, because that is what fixed the problem for me, believe me I had this problem for 3 months, after he passed to me from one of our guys in HERE that he worked for 3 itself.

    1) give the "Admin area" user rights (make sure that the user isn't here, and make sure that you run it past your people from THE first)

    (2) open a session as a user, install activesync * this is a MUST!, otherwise the HKCU registry key will not be created, this is why you get the error message indicating that the name is not a valid short file name *.

    (3) Open regedit and find the two above mentioned registry keys; and give the 'user' or 'domain users' full control of these registry keys. * If you do not, then the very next time the user connects, ActiveSync will try to re - install, you will get the error message and be back at square 1 *.

    (4) disconnect the user, remove the user from the group "Domain Admins".

    (5) test, connect you as the user, run activesync, you will not get this error again.

    (6) If you are having problems... don't think far emailing me I'll help anyone with this problem... * address email is removed from the privacy *.

I think I found the solution for this point, because I have just encountered the same problem in our environment and here's what I did to solve it:

-Create a higher level permissions at the root of the folder redirection (for example \\servername\mydocredirfolder): grant the Group authenticated users the following permissions and apply it to "this folder only" ALLOW: list folders/read data, reading, reading attributes, read extended attributes, create files / add data

I think the MSI is trying to read the free space on the disk on the server, but it cannot because it tries to access the folder where your my documents redirection is sitting.

For the most part just download windows 10 and then by restarting the computer as if nothing happened. Any ideas on how I can fix this?

    Hello

Welcome to the Microsoft community. I will certainly help you with the problem you are experiencing.

I would like to ask you:

    • You are running Windows 7 or Windows 10 on your PC?
    • When was the last time it was working fine? Remember to make changes to the computer before this problem?

Given that you are unable to complete the scan of SFC and Task Manager is empty, usually reinstall or do a repair install is the best choice of action. However, we can try to fix these files and check if that helps. To do this, refer to the steps below:

    1. Open the start menu and type "cmd".
    2. Right-click on the command prompt and click "run as administrator".
    3. Type the following commands and press ENTER after each.

    DISM.exe / Online/Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

    DISM.exe / Online/Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

After you run these commands, restart the system and check.
