When I open a compressed/zipped folder on my trial of desktopand click something in it, it always says "Not responding" and tells me to end or cancel. How should I do?

Do you know when this problem started?  Try a system restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem started.  Here is the procedure: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/.  Don't forget to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points.  If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two.  NOTE: You will need to re - install any software and updates that you have installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for updates.

If the system restore does not work, do a startup repair, boot from the disk Installation of Windows Vista genuine (or one that you can borrow from someone) or a recovery disc.  Here is the procedure: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.html.  You may need to change the BIOS to do first the CD drive in the boot sequence to boot from the CD.  To do this, hold the screen that tells you the key F to push to enter the menu start or start of installation.  Push it quickly. Make the changes, save your work and exit.  Put the CD in the drive and reboot.  When you are prompted, press any key to boot from the CD.

If you do not have a floppy disk, you can make a bootable recovery disk by using http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/ with burning software like: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/active-isoburner.html and, of course, a blank CD.

If this does not work, try to start in safe mode (repeatedly hit F8 key so that the start and go in safe mode with networking).  Then we will check some of your system files:

Go to start / all programs / accessories / command prompt and right click on command prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

Type sfc/scannow, go and let it run.  It will scan and try to correct some of your system files.  If all goes well it will complete with no corruption, he couldn't fix it (if there is such corrouption post here or try to analyze it to find the problem or files using http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228.  This can sometimes solve the problem on its own.

While in the command prompt, type chkdsk /f /r and enter and let it run.  It will scan and try to solve any corruption or bad sectors on your hard drive and remove especially as a cause.

If this does not work, you will need to do a repair/system upgrade using the Windows Vista Installation disc authentic (you own or that you can borrow from someone).  Here is the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html as well as the upgrade from an earlier version of the Windows section of the following: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918884.  Although this will not affect your data, settings or programs, you should always back up your data before you start just be on the safe side.

I hope one of these procedures can solve your problem.  If this isn't the case, after return and we will try something else.  Return message anyway so we know how it turns out.

  • Option 'Compressed (zipped) folder' is missing to send it to.

The "Compressed (zipped) folder" option from the options of is missing on my machine. I ran the command rundll32 zipfldr.dll, RegisterSendTo. When I run the zipfldr.dll rundll32, RegisterSendTo I get the message "error in zipfldr.dll missing entry: registersendto. I also copied the shortcut of windows users who did not work either. Are there alternatives?

You can get a copy of the shortcut in the SendTo "Default user" folder. Follow the instructions here.

  • Context menu ' New > compressed (zipped) folder ' vs ' send to > compressed (zipped) folder ".

I'm moving again right click and zip file, but the option is not there. I have to right click and go to send to, and then compressed zip folder or use 7-zip and move everything on the desktop, create copies and then to have to go back and delete after that is very time consuming. I just want to do a right-click option of origin go again and zip folder back. Can anyone help?

The context menu (the thing that appears when you right-click) is different if you right click on an empty space on your desktop to the right by clicking on an icon on your desktop.

If you click on an icon, you get the choice ' send to ' with several sub-menus including "Compressed folder (zip)."

If you right-click an empty space on the desktop, you get the 'New' choice with several submenus, including "" the file compressed (zipped)."

If you click on the icons of some - but not all-, you will get a 'New' choice that has no submenus.  Selection of the 'new' opens in some program opens the item specified by the icon.  In other words, if you right-click on a Word document (or a shortcut to a Word document), by selecting 'New' opens Word.  Items that are associated with programs that cannot create a new file (for example, Adobe Reader for pdf files) won't even have the choice of 'new '.

Then... If you right click on an empty spot on your desktop, is the 'New' element?  And if it is, is "File compressed (zipped)" absent from the list of submenus?  If so, see number 3 here (and read the below directions on this page)--> http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/28677-new-context-menu-remove-restore-default-menu-items.html

  • Instructions to download and open a web compressed Zip for iPad

I saved my placement support family web files from my DVD ROM as a single compressed Zip file of 4.4 GB in Mega Cloud Storage.  I want to send the link to that file on the nursing staff with an iPad to be able to download and use this web site for their iPad. What are the instructions I should send it to be able to download, decompress and use.  In windows, I just ask to download, decompress, click on the 'default.htm' file and then bookmark.  However, I understand that it is more complex with the iPad. Any suggestion, including useful apps that could be included, appreciated. .

I don't think you want to do this on an ipad.  4.4gig! a lot of data!  People who receive this expect so much data?

This part of a business project?  You could work some sort of solution.  Personal data of a person at random. Forget it.

All applications on the ipad are in sandbox.  4.4 g loading eventually some App.  All data are copied to a second application.  4.4 + files unzipped to say concert 8.0 + copied another 8 concert in a web browser.

  • Spotlight search in compressed .zip files

I was told that Mac, including users with the Mavericks can search files in compressed .zip files. I had an experience of zip files using the 'Compress' command of the Mac, then threw the original uncompressed files and emptied the Recycle Bin. Spotlight can't find the files in the compressed files that remain.

I'm wrong about this capability in the spotlight?

I don't see no settings of Spotlight preferences to choose the files compressed with an archive.

Return to what you have enabled in system preferences: Spotlight: categories of search results. All mine are checked. Although I no longer run Mavericks, I know let me see inside Pages and MS Word .docx documents words (both zipped, renamed containers), and I could also see unique words within other documents zipped. I had all my categories Spotlight search Resutls checked in Mavericks and this continues in El Capitan.
