  I tried all of this and still couldn't work.  After I did it I got a message saying that the power of USB has been exceeded.   You can not upconvert to the DP of the laptop HDMI monitor or VGA ports.

  * Turn off the laptop and U2414H
  * Connect with each other in this way:
  Laptop HDMI out HDMI to HDMI Cable--> HDMI (MHL) U2414H--> 1
  * Turn on the laptop
  * Turn on the U2414H
  * Press on the U2414H Menu button to display the OSD (On Screen Display)
  * Choose the input Source
  * Choose HDMI (MHL) 1
  Out of the OSD
  * Go to the laptop display settings and enable the secondary display

  My Dell U2414h monitor is connected to the end 2012(El Capitan) Apple Mac Mini HDMI. After 1:30, I can't go back in the Menu of the Dell printer. It seems as if the touch buttons no longer work. It seems that if the menu is somehow locked.

  The only thing dat will work is cut off from the power supply. After that work very good tactile buttons, but after a while or when I closed the Mac Mini, I can't go back in the menu. The Dell monitor is now also waiting because I cannot 'touch' the power button.

  Have a U2414H monitor I need to connect to a Dell T1700 purchased with a videocard of Nvidia K2000 added. I need to use the connector of the video card. 2 display ports will be for an another U2414H monitor and a HDMI TV for meetings. I have a Display port to DVI cable and I try to use it from the Dell U2414H monitor and am out of luck. I can't seen to find info if DP supports the U2414H monitors to DVI cables. Has anyone else got it to work? I tried the DVI port on the PC with HP monitors and they worked. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  I've had this U2311H monitor for 4 years now, and it is connected to the Dell XPS 8300 desktop.

  The monitor has two USB ports on the left and for some strange reason, than all the two has stopped working recently.

  I did the following:

  1. disconnect the power to the monitor cable, then plug it back in to the monitor.

  2. unplug the upstream connect the USB cable (between the monitor and the desktop) and re.

  3. move the USB upstream on a different USB port on the desktop while the monitor is off.

  Nothing helps. :(

  That I could do to make the USB ports on the monitor work? I lose 2 practical USB ports and kind of desperate.

  If it was me and the U2311H seemed much, I would just get a card 4 ports USB 2.0 Hub and plug it into the XPS 8300.

  This has happened twice now. I bought a powered USB hub gear and it worked for a few weeks then stopped working.   The first thing to try is to do a reset SMC 2 - 3 times back to back with all the perihpherals disconnected. If this does not work then it may be one of the devices connected to the hub. You should try to see if it's a device by trial and error.

  If all else fails I would swap your gear for one of the hubs USB Belkins. I've never had a problem with one of my friends.

If someone posts a bad review because they tried to load 8 iPads to a hub powered at the same time, well I think you'll be lucky to find a hub that can do.  Hubs can have many ports, but the power supply is usually limited and not designed to provide full amperage to all ports at the same time.
