  • What is the fastest way to convert VMWare workstation VM of ESXi?

    Hello

Was curious to know what is the quickest way to convert a VMWare workstation VM to a VM compatible ESXi. Is the method of standalone converter VMWare at the following ADDRESS of the faster method:

    http://www.networkinghowtos.com/HOWTO/convert-virtual-machine-VMware-Workstation-ESXi-vSphere/

Or is the method below faster? The method below mentions converter standalone is required for Workstation 8 VM but did not mention if it is needed for Workstation 8 AND HIGHER VM (ie: 9 and 10 workstation).

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1012258

My ultimate goal is to export on a USB key and then import on the ESXi instead of convert and copy it to the network server. I'm exporting to my 3 TB USB would be faster than the copy of the virtual machine on the network. Thoughts?

I think the second is the best option VMware KB: export of VMS in VMware Workstation to ESX/ESXi

As you can see you can export the VM and after import on the EXS (do not use personalization)

But uf you have Vmware Workstation 8 or higher, you can connect to the ESX Server and move the machine. If you are in the same local network and do it at a time of low workload, it would be the best option.

  • VMWare Workstation, VM and Acronis TruImage question converter?

Ask a question about the latest version of VMWare Workstation V.  7.1.3 along with the latest version of the VM converter. This version has it can import an Acronis TruImage 10 (.tib) file and change it to a virtual machine. I tried this Win7, WinVista and WinXP running without success.

VMWare VCenter Converter Standalone v.  4.3.0 when used to try to convert a backup returns TruImage 10 "source parameters are invalid", but does not offer a method of changing the settings of the source.

During an attempt to 'import' TruImage 10 files in VMWare Workstation v.7.1.3 the conversion wizard returns a "failed to load the VM source or image." The file may be corrupt, or a format not supported. »

The image files are not corrupt and TruImage backup and restore work correctly with files tested image. Rooms chat VM mention some possible solutions, but they are long and not really practical long term since VM wants to work with these images.

A someone that has tried these conversions and found a successful solution.

    Thank you

That's right, that the converter does not support certain versions of Acronis.

    of http://www.vmware.com/support/converter/doc/conv_sa_43_rel_notes.html

Acronis True Image Echo 9.1, 9.5 and Acronis True Image 10.0, 11.0 (product Home)

With versions not supported (such as 2010 and 2011), you can follow the suggestion of continuum.

  • Convert the physical Linux machine with VMware Converter Standalone 4.0.1 on VMware Workstation

    Hello

I work in a virtualization project, now I test and I want to test the new version of the converter, because I need to convert some Linux machines and I know that with this version is not difficult.

I do not have the ready virtual infrastructure so I test on a workstation environment. I would like to know if someone has converted a physical Linux machine to virtual and if the destination has VMware workstation 6.5. I know that this is not supported, but this does not mean that you couldn't do.

When I have to specify the type of destination, I got the error that you could see on the photo.

Please let me know if you have tested this before and you know how to solve this problem.

    Thanks in advance!

    See you soon

    Malulas,

    Welcome to the Community Forums.

To do a physical to virtual conversion, you MUST GO to ESX.  It is a requirement under the guidance of the user manual.

If the virtual machine was already in ESX, you might be able to export to a workstation image while the ESX VM is powered off.

    Sorry for the bad news.

    Kind regards

  • P2V in VMware workstation 10

I am on Windows 8 and have installed VMware workstation 10 and have several virtual machines.

I need low grade of the PC to windows 7 and thought I could make a VM to install windows 8, so I still have a copy (a virtual machine) my data and existing installed programs.

But thought I might have a problem doing a P2V on PC Windows 8 which is also where VMware Workstation is installed. VMware workstation in the virtual P2V machine would be uninstall because it does not need the virtual machine.

Is it possible to do a P2V to the PC running VMware workstation?

I install VMware Vcenter Converter Standalone or I have a backup, Acronis that I could use.

    What are my options.

    Thanks Rainey

Is it possible to do a P2V to the PC running VMware workstation?

Yes, it's possible... you will need to install VMware vCenter Converter Standalone.

  • Questions to install VMware Workstation

Hello everyone and thank you for your interest in my post.  For the last 6 months I spent reviewing messages to build and run a secure Channel 5 on a laboratory at home and collected a lot of information.  Budget delays I am not near my goal I thought I'd be so I thought I would get something on my current equipment with VMware Workstation.

I got a 64 bit Windows 7 with Intel I7 processor gaming computer and wanted to add Workstation 8 or 9 now that it is out.  Finally, I would like to build some virtual labs, but now want to get running in the virtual world.

Help for the following questions would be appreciated.

1 install Workstation 8 on a Windows 7 64 bit computer or do a clean install on the computer and run a Windows 7 as a virtual machine?

If a clean install Workstation 8 or 9 is recommended how could I get my image of Windows 7 today converted to a virtual machine before the clean install?

Guess the question would be, is I there a VM tool that can convert an image of current computer hardware in a virtual machine so that I can run on a new installation of VMware Workstation 9?

    2. what steps should be taken to migrate from a hardware configuration to a configuration of the VM on the same box?

    3. what risks are there to lose data?

    4. what license issued or limitations can I exect meet when I create several virtual machines, alias windows, Linux and others?  Can you build and run several different VMS at the same time?

    5. return to the VM tools, I know on the side of Vsphere there are tools to create virtual machines for ESXi, but what tools are there for Workstation 8 or 9 build and run virtual machines?

That ye may know that my training and the ability to understand your answers I was in the field of information technology since 1990.  Currently, I am a network engineer and have experience as a non-virtuelle system administrator installs computer and server and operation.

Thanks again to all who help out.  I hope that once I get the speed I can contribute to the community as well.

    David

Since you are a "Network Engineer and have experience as a system administrator" then IMO shouldn't really ask!   How hard is it to type 'physical to virtual' in Google and get to VMware vCenter Converter?  Also read the documentation on it as well as VMware Workstation!   Yes I know you said "on non-virtuelle installs computer and server and operation" however do practically is fundamentally not different then do it physically, although with virtualization, there are additional methods that can be used, as using an ISO Image vs optical media to install from, etc.  Seriously with your course, you should be able to install VMware Workstation, browse and examine the different menu commands and create VM almost without having to read the documentation however takes the time to at least he skim initially and then jump in.    As a tip activate everything installs Windows without first installing VMware Tools, if you plan to install VMware Tools in the virtual machine, and wait until you are sure that you have configured as you want, and then select as appropriate.

One thing you'll need to do if you are using the latest version of VMware vCenter Converter you will need to select the correct mass storage controller as you walk through the wizard because it is by default in the IDE and you want LSI SAS with Windows 7.

  • VMware workstation 8.0 OS not found

I am using Vcenter converter std 5.0 only to convert vhd image vmdk image, create the new virtual machine using vmware Workstation 8. But window 2003 server fail to initialize. Error message "operating systems" not found CD/DVD setting pointing to the w2k3test.vmdk picture. Please help me solve the problem.

    Thank you very much

As I said in my previous post, the VMDK file is the virtual HARD DISK, not an ISO image!  Do not point the CD-ROM drive to the vmdk file - it will only complicate things.  The vmdk file must be set on the hard disk.

  • VMWare Workstation 8 able to handle 5 virtual computers desktop running XP?

    Hi comrades of comm.,

I am involved in virtualization investment locations. In our branches, we have normally 5 computers running XP. PC requirements are 4 GB of RAM, 250 GB HD, Dual core processor. Normally we use the five T3500s of Dell workstations.

I am now testing the virtual environment with a single server and workstation 5, to access the virtual machines on the server via RDP. On the server, I installed Windows 7, with 24 GB and 1 TB of hard drive. The server is a Dell T3500. I use to manage VMWare Workstation 8 virtual machines. I have converted a machine via VMWare vCenter Converter. I'm running 3-2 VMs, devoting 1 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM by each virtual computer.

Point is that, if there is 1 single VM running performance is satisfactory. But the startup is very slow. If I start the second VM performance begins already down and with 3 machines, they are slow terrbily.

Why do you think that what is happening? Where can I improve the tuning? Am I wrong in using VMWare Workstation?

It's the fact that I use the T3500 as a server, a problem? If so, what machine suggest me you like server and with what criteria?

    The conversion is also important?

Do you use still 2 virtual processors per virtual machine?
so, you want to run 10 vCPUs on a host that has 2 CPus himself.

You can run a simple test with CPU by VM?

  • Is it possible to transfer everything to a virtual hard disk that is smaller on a virtual hard disk that is larger in VMWare Workstation, using the same virtual machine?

    Hello

I was wondering if it is possible to transfer everything to a virtual hard disk that is smaller on a virtual hard disk that is larger in VMWare Workstation, using the same virtual machine? In the affirmative, please could someone advise me on how to do it. Also utility management and disk transfer can be used in virtual machines to do this?

    Thank you very much

    Tim Auluck

I'm not sure what exactly you are asking. Can you please clarify!

Basically you can resize a virtual drive or add a second virtual disk to a virtual machine and transfer/copy files. You can also resize the virtual disk using VMware Converter for example.

  • Convert/export Workstation to Vsphere?

I don't know if this is the proper forum for this.

I have a v7 Vmware Workstation WITH 1 instant machine I want to export so that I can run in Vsphere 4.1

There is a vmware KB article:

Export of VMS in VMware Workstation to ESX

(I don't have the KB # because it is not print)

In any case, this means that you can do this WITH snapshots (I blieve this is point 5).

Now, if I use the instructions, it will fail with 'comments unsupported OS' (SLES 11 64-bit in this case).  For some weird reason.  If I adjust the "OS" type in vmware workstation so that there 'another 64 - bit', then convert it.

But it does not in the snapshot.

Unfortunately, I need to bring during the snapshot.

But I see a completely Ko diff, which indicates that you CAN use the converter with snapshots.

    So what KB's right?

Import a VM WS with snapshots on ESX (i) AND by keeping the snapshots is not supported by any version of the converter.

If a KB is claiming that this is possible, it should be fixed.

However, you might think of ways to do it manually - but the effort would be significant - nothing that could be done with a procedure ' click here / click here.
I would consider rather to create two or more different VMs

  • Virtualbox to Vmware Workstation migration issues

    Hello

Although vmware workstation boots the converted image that the blue screen of death appears and the initialization of the process repeat foreover.  I tried to stop the boot process, but I could not (there is no way (time or other) press F2!).

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you very much

    Ed

One last thing - I couldn't press F2 for bios on Vmware Workstation Setup.  Is there something I should know?

You must first click inside the Virtual Machine window so that it receives the key however also take a look at the following.

You can also add the following parameters to the .vmx config file.

To give more time to indulge, the Start Menu Add following (the value is in milliseconds)...

    bios.bootDelay = "3000"

For, once, force the VM in the BIOS to change the Boot order in the BIOS if the CD-ROM is first add the following...

    bios.forceSetupOnce = "TRUE"

Also take a look at #4: VMware Workstation (menu bar) > help > Help topics > Workstation help > getting started with Virtual Machines > start a Virtual Machine > start a VM from Workstation User Interface

  • HELP me please, could not return to vm and crash of vmware workstation 7

    Help!

I'm in deep problem with a virtual machine that does not work either... I'm disparate because I can't go to a previous snapshot.

I have a machine t1500 dell with core i870, 16 GB of ram, nvidia quadro fx 512 mb graphics card, 500 gb hd, windows 7 pro 64-bit.

In this machine wmware workstation 7 (latest version) is installed with autoprotect runs up to 10 daily snapshot.

About 40 days, I converted two computers in vm... one with 32-bit vista and one with 32-bit xp.

Every month the recent, everything works well... but yesterday all the vm was crushed because the space in my hd was full... so since the Snapshot Manager, I deleted some old snapshot.

During the removal of a few shots, sometimes it shows me that he can't remove because the disc is always busy... but, but icon in the timeline of the Snapshot Manager went... go in the folder where I saved the files in vm, also failed in the Recycle Bin of windows.

Once deleted, I try to turn it on again the vista 32 bit vm... aaaaahhhhhh, it does not start! and it remains pending mode... why!... If I try to take it back, all wmware workstation crash and I can only see a windows message error that vmware workstation has stopped working.

Then I try to run the virtual machine with 32-bit xp and it work without any problem.

Then I opened again snapshot manager and I try to use the function "go to...". "to recover a snapshot... ahhhhhh! nothing to do! It crash again!

so I tried also to remove some files as described in this Ko... but not at all, it crash again!

HELP ME, PLEASE! I have all my projects in this machine is very important... If I lose the...

OK, so it looks like us (you) lost snapshot sw2 - 000010.vmdk, which was created between March 1 and March 2.

What we need to do now is to repair the broken chain instant (because of the missing original sw2 - 000010.vmdk) and create a clone of this disc. Snapshots 000043 and 000044 contain no data and can be ignored.

What we need to do is:

    1.) to repair the chain instant (link sw2 - 000009.vmdk to sw2 - 000006.vmdk)

    • SW2 - 000009.vmdk backup since we need to modify this file
    • Copy the sw2 - 000009.txt attached to the virtual machine file
    • Copy dsfi.exe to the virtual computers folder
    • run: 'sw2 - 000009.vmdk' dsfi.exe 512 800 'sw2 - 000009.txt.

    2.) creating a clone

    • find a drive with enough free space on the drive on which the clone will be created!
    • run: "C:\Program Files (x 86) \VMware\VMware Workstation\vmware - vdiskmanager.exe «r - t 0 \sw2clone.vmdk C:\vm\sw2\sw2-000042.vmdk»»
    • Create a new virtual machine and attach the vmdk cloned (using existing disk) instead of creating a new disc
    • Before you start the virtual machine, create a snapshot where the clone has some corrupted data and you must go back to for example to fix this virtual disk to a helper VM or open it with the disk mounter utility.
    • run the chkdsk command to check that the disc is ok

  • (Beginner) of the initial steps for the new installation of vmware workstation & guest os

Hi, very new for the virtual machine. I need help on what type of software (vmware), need and the first steps of the installation.

Current configuration: a portable 3 separate HD, 1 computer = Windows 7, 2 = XP, 3 is Linux RH. I have manually swap HD to work on each operating system.

Req: A laptop with Windows 7 as main OS and two other OS (XP and Linux) Guest.

    (1) I prefer not to install OS and the entire application again for the guest operating system (XP and linux), will like to convert, copy, etc.

    (2) can I install multiple OS (XP) for testing of applications and then delete them?

    (3) can I use a different version of an application in a guest operating system?

The software that I need to buy:

    VMware workstation 7.1

Version of the converted VMware?  (this may be free, I think)

    ThinApp 4. ???

If these are vmware software that I need is a step by step installation, in particular of the convert.

    Thank you, ralph

    Hi Raoul,.

    Welcome to the forums.

VMware vCenter Converter Standalone is a free download that is accessible to everyone, so you can use it to convert your existing machines.

For testing purposes, you can create a virtual machine "or" with all standard applications, and then use the function 'linked-clone"of the workstation. In this way, you can have several machines quickly with the same basic configuration to test different applications.

It is more complicated to have multiple versions of the same application in a single virtual machine. ThinApp seems to be the solution, but it should require the application packages (I have no experience with ThinApp) construction. It's a bit complicated just to test. Way the easiest would be to create a new virtual machine for each version of the application.

Workstation and the converter are very easy to install if you use a standard configuration.

    Good luck.

  • Conversion from cold clone process in VMware Workstation

    Hello

We would like to convert a Unix physical in our branch abroad using process cold clone with VMware Converter.

In this industry, there is no ESX, so we will try to convert it to VMware Workstation.

Can transfer us files from computer virtual via ssh we and configure a virtual machine on our ESX.

The coldclone VMware is just a Windows Server bootable CD with VMware converter installed so it will convert into a virtual Workstation 3 machine. The major issues will be if she recognizes the installed physical devices (disk controller, NIC) If you are on a SUN server. If you like I want to practice so that you know what questions you have material. You can also use things like Ghost or Acronis or, possibly, Vizioncore vConverter.
