VMWare Workstation 8 able to handle 5 virtual computers desktop running XP?

Hi comrades of comm.,

I am involved in virtualization investment locations. In our branches, we have normally 5 computers running XP. PC requirements are 4 GB of RAM, 250 GB HD, Dual core processor. Normally we use the five T3500s of Dell workstations.

I am now testing the virtual environment with a single server and workstation 5, to access the virtual machines on the server via RDP. On the server, I installed Windows 7, with 24 GB and 1 TB of hard drive. The server is a Dell T3500. I use to manage VMWare Workstation 8 virtual machines. I have converted a machine via VMWare vCenter Converter. I'm running 3-2 VMs, devoting 1 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM by each virtual computer.

Point is that, if there is 1 single VM running performance is satisfactory. But the startup is very slow. If I start the second VM performance begins already down and with 3 machines, they are slow terrbily.

Why do you think that what is happening? Where can I improve the tuning? Am I wrong in using VMWare Workstation?

It's the fact that I use the T3500 as a server, a problem? If so, what machine suggest me you like server and with what criteria?

The conversion is also important?

Do you use still 2 virtual processors per virtual machine?
so, you want to run 10 vCPUs on a host that has 2 CPus himself.

You can run a simple test with CPU by VM?

  • Where VMWARE Workstation 11 stores no information about Virtual Machines open

  • VMware workstation and ReadyNAS to store the virtual machine

    Hello

I just bought a Netgear Readynas box for home (Readnas RND2000 XRAID SIN) and it seems like a big box to keep a backup of my critical data and flow data and video music.

Now that will take about 100 GB in space and I'll always have weird to play with 400 GB and it made me think if I host all my test VM I created using VMware workstation, for the moment I use a local computer, but its lack of disk space, I tried to put the virtual computer on an external drive and performance is ok on it as well but for me , it would be ideal if I could store them on the readynas and open them through VM workstation.

Of course put it on a NAS box could be problematic, has anyone tried this on one of these boxes ReadyNAS? its probably not designed for this type of data and traffic, but if anyone has got, it works, I would be interested to hear comments.

One of the potential problems in my view is I'll be going through a wireless router with a 4 port 100 mb go and see that as a problem, it replaces a gigabit switch would make a huge difference, or would it still slow?

I would appreciate any advice on this.

    Thank you

I'll guess that your external hard drives are USB.  In this case my answer is Firewire.  I run several of my virtual machines to external Firewire drives very good success.  While I ran a few virtual machines from USB, USB just isn't the sustained performance of Firewire.  This is the case on my Macbook Pro and my HP Pavilion (with built-in Firewire.)

That said, even if I don't have any experience with the ReadyNAS, I use a Windows Server as NFS storage to an ESX Server.  The gigabit switch is almost a necessity.  Possible about 100 MB, but significantly better on gigabit.  In addition, the link of the ESX to Windows NFS is on a physically separate local network segment, so I don't have any problems with the network traffic slows down the virtual machine.  I have not tried Workstation with storage NFS, as I always got Firewire on all my machines so I kept for most of the virtual machine from the network.  YMMV, of course, but I suspect that you will have to keep the rest of the traffic network in mind if you can not create a separate network for NFS storage.  (for example: no internet surfing on the host while the virtual machine is running.)

  • Core upgraded to 4.0 on Centos 7 VMWare Workstation 11 won't build the virtual network device

As shown in the topic, I have manually compiled kernel 4.0 for my installation of CentOS 7. After the installation of the kernel (in rpm mode, followed the instructions here: How to compile a Kernel - The Way CentOS ) installed all 3 rpm, kernel, kernel-headers and kernel-devel and then tried to start my installation of workstation with it leads to having to re - build the components (as usual)

It does not, when it came to the compilation of the network management module. See attached log file that it generated.

    I also tried to uninstall, downloaded VMware-Workstation-Full - 11.1.0 - 2496824.x86_64.bundle and re-installed with the same result.

  • VMware Workstation is unable to open one of the virtual disks required by this virtual machine because it is larger than the maximum file size supported by the host file system.

I'm transitioning from Windows XP (64-bit) on a new computer with Windows 7 installed.  I undertook to VMWare Workstation 6 7.0.1 in the process.  The problem is with a very large RAID 5 volume on the new system.  It's a score of 5.45 TB (TPG and NTFS).

When I try to start a virtual machine on this volume, I get the message "VMware Workstation cannot open one of the virtual disks required by this virtual machine because it is larger than the maximum size of the files supported by the host file system.".  This is obviously not true.  If I copy the virtual machine to another drive on the system, it starts without a problem.

Anyone have any ideas on how to work around this problem?

try to add this line in the vmx file:

    diskLib.sparseMaxFileSizeCheck = "false".

    Maybe it helps.

    VMDK-type do you use?

  • VMware workstation vm not listed, after migration

The Organization has just migrated my pc. Migration of post that vmware workstation console is not listed the virtual machines. The migration involved, creating a new user in the new field that seem to have created the problem. The migration has been copied on my stuff together of old of the user for new users. So, I always files vm for the virtual machine to C:\Users\my-new-user\Documents\Virtual Machines.

To start the virtual machine, I created a new virtual machine using the hard file. This seems to start the virtual machine where I left. So, in summary, I'm looking for:

1 / how to list all the virtual machines on the console of vmware worstation as before for the new user

2 / when I re - create a new virtual machine using a hard disk existing a VM, I see many files as hard

    vmname.VMDK

    vmname - s001.vmdk

    vmname - s002.vmdk

    .

    .

    .

    .

    .

    .

    vmname - s025.vmdk

Should what file I use? I used the "vmname.vmdk" to create and it works

If all the files have been migrated, you don't need to create new VMs. simply open the configuration (.vmx) from the file menu of VMware Workstation virtual machine files.

  • VMWare Workstation 10.0.1 Crash/Hang up

Have a situation where VMWare Workstation 10.0.1 crashes all virtual machines and can not even then stop my physical machine itself

Seems pretty consistent that he does whenever I start a couple of virtual machines.  Can't even kill the process - start another instance of the workstation and that crashes too

My machine is running Server 2008 R2 Enterprise.  I created a dump file, but it is 446 MB so don't think that I will be uploading it not anytime soon!

    Help!

Had similar problems in 10.0, but 10.0.1 looks even worse :-(  Think I'm going to be downgraded - perhaps even to 9.0.2 which was strong on the same machine.  Really hope that I didn't not lose my money upgrading to 10

OK, final update on this - in the end it came down to problem of disk on the host controller.  After a little research I found that many people have problems with Marvell SATA controllers (9230 in my case) where the SSD is attached.  It seems that there are problems with power management features that cause SSDS hang effectively making you into a kind of energy saving mode.

After many changes of configuration and test in an attempt to move things forward the Marvell controller, I ended up spending my SSD (which hosts the VM readers) works at an Intel controller - in fact, I removed all the RAID config, including standard hard drives of the Marvell controller and run just stand-alone drives off as now (that I ended up having to rebuild RAID1 arrays often enough).

So now everything works smoothly and no hanging of VMWare Workstation, no matter how many VMS are run/updated... Happy Days!

So I would say that if you see (Reset of the device, \Device\RaidPort1, has been issued) or similar in your event logs (obviously for Windows only) and then check if you use a Marvell SATA controller - if you are away from your drives (especially the SSDs) to another controller

  • Fatal error of VMware Workstation

    Hello

I have serious problems with VMware Workstation (version 9.02) and unique virtual machine to Windows 8. VMware Workstation is installed x 64 host Windows 8. This unique virtual machine crashes randomly with the following error message:

    http://i.imgur.com/BqF1r2Q.png

I have other virtual machines also but I have no problems with them. First of all, I thought it was a physical disk error and I moved this virtual machine to another drive, but it did not help. I reinstalled VMware Tools and even created a new virtual machine and cloned this issue with Acronis Backup & Restore machine for this. This due to the machine crashes with the same error, but every time you start so things went even worse.

Any ideas what to do with it?

    I attach a log file.

I updated to VMware Workstation 10 and reinstalled the whole problematic virtual machine from scratch, but it still crashed at random several times a day with the same error.

But now things look well so far.

Yesterday, I changed a setting. I unchecked "Accelerate 3D Graphics" settings of the virtual machine (under the display settings). After that, the virtual machine crashed 0 times and I've been using a whole day! I have Nvidia display with the latest adapter drivers Win 8.1 x 64 installed on the host machine. I think drivers Nvidia has something to do with this virtual machine crashing, maybe...

I started to suspect the display driver Nvidia after seeing this nvd3dumpx.dll appears more than once in the log file (this is VMware Workstation logfile ater the crash):

    Kind regards

Yes, sure, no problem. And if you go on the Compatibility Guide ( http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility ), you're looking for in the guest operating system section, pay the proceeds Workstation with Windows 7 as OS name of family, you will find that Windows 7 and SP1, 32-bit or 64-bit are supported on WS 8.0. Also, if you create a new virtual machine, you can choose Windows 7 as guest operating system. It is the proof that it works.

  • Allocation of memory in vmware workstation

I'm new to vmware.  I have a server I'll test this on.  I have a Server Windows 2008 R2 with 4 GB of memory.  If I install vmware workstation on it and install a virtual machine Windows XP with 1 GB of RAM allocated to it, does this mean that when the virtual machine is running the XP virtual machine has 1 GB of memory to use the host (Windows 2008) system will have 3 GB for himself to use?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

If your virtual machine is fully using the 1 GB or RAM, then Yes, you are correct - but remember that Workstation is just an application that runs on your server, so if the virtual machine does not all allocated memory, the application will require all this memory and so you will have more memory available for the physical host.

  • Ghost 7.0 and VMware Workstation 6.5.2

I've used Norton Ghost 7.0 to the image of a Windows 98 machine. I'm trying to use this image to create a virtual machine with VMware Workstation 6.5.2. The virtual machine starts by using the CD de Boot Ghost I have, but when I get this CD out and put the disks in the disk, the image "turns", but not to very high ROTATION speed that you normally hear. When I navigate the discs, the menu always displays the boot CD, and he does not see the disk image.

    What I am doing wrong?

    you need something

eject the cd ghost and didn't inject the CD with the image again - pretend that everything is fine. Ghost complain of course

now inject different CD and say ok

    as it usually works
