    Hi all

I am to evaluate Workstation 12 Pro and wanted to know if I can do a P2V of a Linux machine?

When I try to do it (with VMware Vcenter Converter Standalone installed as client-server), it is said:

    fault. IncorrectCredentialsFault.summary.

And when I try again it says:

Unable to connect to VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Server. Make sure that VMware vCenter Converter Standalone version 5.5 is installed

I installed the latest version of 5.5, so don't know what could be the problem.

    Thanks in adavnce!

Linux p2v requires interaction with a computer virtual assistance.

Although it is basically possible with workstation he never was executed

which means that Linux P2V is only possible when the target is ESXi.

If you're an experienced Linux user, you can do it manually.

  • Linux P2V on Wan

I've not had to P2V a Linux machine before (or maybe other things) so please be gentle.

Situation: I need to P2V a machine a localhost ESXi 5 Linux (Red Hat). The problem is, I'm away for the two boxes and only available connectivity is a moderately slow VPN (a few Mbps at best).

I intend to use only vCentre Standalone Converter as usual but I understand what the P2V process runs the GNU / Linux through the VPN to my local converter then back across the VPN to the ESXi box; of course, this will probably fail due to connection reliability/bandwidth limitations.

Is that correct or is my understanding wrong? I had hoped that the machine Linux would like to speak directly to the ESXi host, once the conversion work is running, but it doesn't seem to work this way from what I've seen so far.

Any help or recommendations for a better way to do much appreciated.

When you do Linux P2V Converter Server creates the VM on the ESX destination, then it powers on, fits on an image ISO bootable it and tells the virtual machine to boot from the CD. It has a special converter service (help desk) who performs the rest of the conversion process. Once the assistance service is started, it establishes an SSH session on the source machine and transfers the data. The traffic is not routed through the Converter server machine. If this does not work - what is the error you get? You should be able to SSH to the network where the target VM is created for the source server.

  • Linux P2V destination

    Hello!

I am new to convert and would like some advice.  I have several virtual machines running on a hypervisor XEN on SLES10.  I want to convert to ESXi, but the problem is that the hardware running XEN is the equipment I use for ESXi.

Here's what I've done so far: I have another VMWare server running (the free server, no ESXi) and I was able to use the onverter to convert one of the virtual machines Windows (from XEN) to the flat hard/vmx files directly and it works now with happiness on the VMware Server.  I guess I can easily convert that to ESXi when the time comes?

But when I try to convert the Linux VM (on XEN), it will recognize the source machine, but the only option I have for the destination is an ESXi server.  I don't get the option to choose a directory and create the vmdk/vmx files.  And as I said, I do not have an ESXi server to convert until I get this converted XEN VM, because I need the same material.

I tried to load a PC with the XEN hypervisor and perform my XEN virtual machines it temporarily so I could load the current material of XEN with ESXi, but due to the different processors, I had all kinds of core issues and could not get the XEN VM to load.  I have not any ESXi supported the spare hardware laying around!

Is it possible to run Linux P2V and creates the vmdk/vmx files directly?  Other thoughts?

Thanks for any help you can give me!

    Matt

A Linux p2v must go to ESX as destination.  It is an obligation to perform the conversion process, and there is no workaround solution that I know.

You have the right idea to get a second server online, XEN or ESXi because that would facilitate what you're trying to do.

    Sorry for the bad news

    Kind regards

  • Linux P2V VM with key-based authentication

We have several machines Linux (CentOS) we want to P2V to our new vSphere environment.

We do not allow remote password authentication and we cannot allow that due to security policies.

Is there a way or a workaround to use basic key with the converter?

    Graham

Currently not. We discussed these options, but it implies the copy of the private key of the user as well the Converter server machine and the destination of VM (because the two parties establish the SSH connection to the source), and we suspect that some people will not be happy to this topic, so that lowered the priority argument.

  • HP Proliant DL380 G4 Red Hat 5.1 Linux P2V

    Hello

    I'm trying to P2V a HP Proliant DL380 G4 with Linux Red Hat 5.1.

I did a basic cold migration and found that I was getting panic the kernel. Looking through the mistakes, that's because migration cold does not provide the correct drivers etc. to the controller raid etc..

What I want to know is:

What is support/how to P2V a Linux OS with RAID etc configurations?

    Is there documentation?

Personally Im lazy and I'd like to see for a moment, and then click software if possible.

I P2Ved a bunch of them - but to be honest, we had problems in the start menu and ended up using Platespin Migrate (PowerConvert)

We talked to one of our COMPUTER resellers and they gave you a free for a migration or two - licesnse if at least we were able to test the product.

  • Linux P2V question: could not query the live source Linux computer

We try to convert some servers in a remote data center; owners have we gave SSH access through the firewall and even provided the root password (I can actually confirm it SSH - ING in the boxes, so that the work of the certainly).  However, the actual conversion process going anywhere near as easily.  Whenever we try, the conversion process does not start, telling us that it was 'impossible to interview the live Linux source machine'

    A few details:

The converter version: 6.1.1 (as an administrator), running on Windows 10 PC (I tried the 4.x and 5.x, converter though)

Source: Box Dell running RHEL 5.11

Destination: cluster vSphere 5.1 (not that we actually get there)

I checked what appear to be the usual causes for this purpose; / tmp is writable, there is no "echo" statement in all .bashrc and root has a good shell (/ bin/bash) and still no joy.  Can anyone suggest what we might have missed?  I have attached the newspapers of conversion has failed as well.

    Hello

    The error is:

    bash:. / vmware - sysinfo.sh: / bin/sh: Bad interpreter: permission denied

It is possible that "/ bin/sh" causes a problem, maybe sh is not just a link to bash or something. (I don't really know why vmware - sysinfo.sh reads this, it has been so for centuries)

I suggest that you try to manually run sysinfo on the source. Copy archive sysinfo on the source machine (it's in the folder "%ProgramFiles% (x 86) %\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone"; there are 2 records tar - 32 and 64 bit), unzip and run the script. If it continues to give the error, try to replace/bin/bash and try again. If it succeeds, just edit the tarballs on converter website.

  • P2V of Red Hat Linux 7.2

    Hello-

I have a client with a Red Hat Linux 7.2 Server old. The free Converter Standalone will allow me to do this server of VMware Server (free version) P2V conversion?

The physical server that will be converted is extremely low, lack of space, in the case of questions.

    Thank you...

No, it won't work, for 2 reasons: RedHat 7.2 is not supported (it is an older distribution running on the 2.4.x kernel and we do not support that, except for RHEL 2.1).   Also, Linux P2Vs need to be oriented to ESX, VMware Server is not supported.  However, please keep in mind that ESXi is also free.

  • Try to run a P2V on Linux (RHEL5) server for the first time, may not know how to get * started *.

Hi - I'm trying to figure out how do a P2V for a Linux (RHEL5) server, and everything I find documentation seems to start with, «now that you have the Converter Wizard run...» »

(Linux Linux Linux, no NOT of Windows)

Can I buy a vowel on how / where can I Start, from the beginning, please?

I am running VMware VirtualCenter 2.5.0 (build 119598) using VMware Infrastructure Client 2.5.0 (build 119826), and everything works fine.

I have the plugin VMware Converter Enterprise 4.0.2 installed and enabled on the virtual circuit.

I downloaded archive VMware Converter (autonomous) "Converter-4 - 146302.tar.gz", but have not yet installed all this anywhere.

I can't find anything in the VC on the converter, beyond that the plugin is installed and activated, so I guess that I don't start the conversion process.

    Here's my question:

The converter is supplied with a server, a Client and an Agent.

Simply install the Agent on the physical Linux box I want to convert, the Agent and the customer, all three pieces or what?

Once I have some parts I need installed on the physical area Linux, start the conversion from here, or from the VC or what?

Y at - there a page somewhere that describes it in a way that is useful for someone who has never done this before?

Any help, pointers, advice, suggestions, acts of mercy greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

OK, this isn't really as complicated as you make it to be:

    1. you ran Setup on a machine that can reach the source and the ESX on the network.  You are trying to install 'this' or ' only that. "  You install.  The only difference between a "local installation" and "installation of client server", is that it allows you to install the client on another machine and control the Converter on this other server machine.  Maybe it's not necessary for you, but it does not hurt so I always do.

    2. you start the Client of converter (vmware-converter-customer) on a machine where you installed everything.

    3. you choose the IP accessible (from ESX) the source for the source power Linux machine remotely.

    4. you select the target ESX (or the Victoria Cross, but there is really no point, you can simply point directly to the target ESX).

    5. you enter a static IP address of VM for assistance if necessary.

    6. you look at the progress meter and see the conversion complete.  You don't need to worry about what anyone else unless you have a firewall preventing circulation.

P.S., Another user has published this guide to make a LInux P2V with converter, you may find useful:

Your problem is the same as in Linux P2V: no space is available on the device

I recommend that you use Converter 6.1, it adds automatically more space on the volume / Boot to avoid these problems.

  • Question of P2V RHEL5 Converter 5.0

I have problems with a Linux P2V conversion. The OS is RHEL5, the converter is 5.0, the ESXi and vCenter are two 5.0 and the error is the following: "error: do not start the virtual machine of destination.» The highlight of the previous log just before the error is: 'in the meantime the destination virtual machine start the assistance of converter server '.

When I console using the virtual machine to see where it is in the boot process, it displays: "Load/boot/vmlinuz..." ». Here, he just constantly hangs and eventually displays the error above in the converter.

This jumps out at anyone as something they experienced?

Thank you very much for any help.

It did not work in the end. However, eliminating intermediaries, that is my local machine, seems to do the job. After having paid greater attention in newspapers, I found that the problem resulted from an HTTP error. I loaded the converter on vCenter from the pole to eliminate the network from my local computer to the equation.

However, now I have new problems: despite the success of my first P2V RHEL, I have a problem with my second. The VM Converter helper requires a login complete installation. It says the default passwords for 'root' and 'user' is 'password '. It does not work. A few searches on Google told me that I need to annotate the file converter - agent.xml with an indicator of password, but this file doesn't exist in my repertoire of converter 5.5. Any ideas?
