copy a folder on multiple disks

I want to save a file on a DVD + RW 4.7 gb cd. The file is about 8.2 GB, too
large to fit on a single disc. Two questions:

1 is there a way - with standard Windows tools or a third-party tool-(7) to copy the file over multiple disks? In other words, the folder as a result would extend over more than one physical disk.

2 are there large capacity disks that are supported by Windows (7) that could
host file in one disc?

TIA

Zig - zag echoing amazement, I find it hard to believe that a reasonably well-run TB profile that would be great.  However, there is a very nice (and free) backup program for Thunderbird and Firefox called MozBackup.  I used it for a long time wisely.   It is a good starting point, and you should really consider using something other than spans optical discs, which sooner or later will fill you with regret.  USB hard drives are fairly cheap these days and even brilliance is better than optical discs.

    Hi Peter,

Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft Community.

From your problem description, I understand that you are unable to transfer files from an external drive on another drive. Please let me know if this isn't the problem that you are experiencing.

Before troubleshooting, I have little information on the issue.

    1. Do you receive any error or display message?
    2. Did you recent hardware or modifications to the software on the computer before this problem?

Try the methods and then check after each method:

Method 1: Transfer files from a drive to the location on the desktop or a temporary folder and then try to transfer them to the destination disk.

Note: make sure the free space on the disk in the destination drive.

    Method 2: Run the Fixit:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/mats/windows_file_and_folder_diag/

Method 3: Disconnect your player safely, and restart the computer. And then try to transfer the files.

  • 'File name' error too long when you copy a folder to a DVD disc

When I copy a folder that contains a large number of files on an external hard drive, I have no problem, but if I try to copy the same folder to a DVD disc, I get a message indicating that a file name is too long.  My first question is why do I get the message for DVD and not the external hard drive?  My second question is: How can I generate a list of files in my folder that have too long names? My second question is already other post on the forum, but there was no answer.  Is it because it is not possible to generate such a list?

    Thank you

It depends on what is called the 'file system '. File systems are how files are stored on a disk. Many of them have limits on how long the total file path can be. DVD and external hard drives use different file systems.

If you want a list of all the files in a folder, open a command prompt. Type this in:

    CD "C:\path\to\folder".

and press ENTER. Replace path\to\folder with the path of the file in your file that you want to check to make sure this filepath is in quotes!

    Now type:

    dir /s > 'output.txt '.

and press ENTER. This will tell the guest to make a list of all the files in this folder and in each subfolder, and then store in a text file. This will allow you to view the list and I hope to find the long file names. Once you have found the long file name, go to that file, and then change the name.

Here is an example of the above commands. Let's say I have a folder named "foo" in the My Documents folder. I first type:

    CD "C:\Users\Entegy\Documents\foo".

and press ENTER. Now, I want the list of files to be placed on my desk. Then I type:

    dir /s > "C:\Users\Entegy\Desktop\filelist.txt."

And voila, I have a list of all the content of foo on my desktop files. Just make sure that your path ends with .txt and you'll be fine. And don't forget to put quotes around filepaths!

  • Try to copy a folder with subfolders, some don't copy, get the message that the folder names are too long under Windows 7

Hi, when you try to copy a folder with lots of subfolders, some files don't copy.  I get a message that the folder names are too long, and the only option is to ignore these files.  Anyone know the maximum folder (and also) name length that will copy windows 7?

    Thank you

    Hello

    a. What are the data you're trying to move?
    b. what operating system (for example Windows files) files?
    c. What is the method that you use to copy data?

Windows 7 supports filename up to 260 characters. I would ask you to decrease the characters in the file name and then try to copy the files.

Let us, run disk checking hard disk utility and then check.
    Here's how:
    1. open the computer by clicking the Start button, click computer.
    2. click on the drive you want to check, and then click Properties.
    3. click on the Tools tab and then, under check for errors, click Find now. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
To automatically repair problems with files and folders that the scan detects, select automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk check will be a problem, but not to fix them.
To perform a thorough check, select search and attempt to recover bad sectors. This analysis tries to find and repair physical errors on the disk itself, and it may take much longer to complete.
To check for errors file and the physical errors, select both automatically fix errors in file system and search for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
    4. click on start.

Depending on the size of your drive, it may take several minutes. For best results, do not use your computer for any other tasks while it checks errors.

Important: Running chkdsk on the drive if bad sectors are found on the disk hard when chkdsk attempts to repair this area if all available on which data can be lost.

    I hope this helps.

Thank you, and in what concerns:

  • Photos of virtual machines with multiple disks on different LUNS - Question

I have some questions on how to manage the snapshots of virtual machines with multiple disks on different LUNS.  First of all, the LUNS are VMFS.  We are just starting to add virtual machines with dedicated for data storage format VMFS LUNS.  I don't think an extra space must be made for snapshots, as well as at least 100 GB LUN is required to store the data, and then say, add about 25 to 50% of this amount?  Set the 100 GB vmdk file but have the GB from 25 to 50 additional disk space for snapshots, if necessary (rather than just to get a unit number logic needed 100 GB of data and devote all of the 100 GB to the vmdk file).  In addition, if a virtual machine has several files vmdk on different LUNS, which will be a problem to take a snapshot, and is it possible to do just a snapshot of a disk of a virtual computer (as the volume of the BONE)?

    Thanks for any help.

Snapshot files are created in the home folder of the VM by default for all virtual disks, no matter on what data store they are. You must make sure you have enough free disk space on the data store for snapshots.

If you want to exclude a virtual disks of taking snapshots, you can set it to 'Independent' - 'Persistent' machine virtual settings to the HARD drive.

  • Copy the folder Alternative

According to the help file for LR 3, you cannot copy a folder in LR.

The scan workflow that I am developing is that

    • I have scan TIFF in the file Archive.
    • I make a copy of the archive file to use as a working folder.
    • I rename the files in the working folder.

Is there another way to do this in LR?

    Dale

When you import your TIFF in Lightroom of what you call the file archive, you can tell Lightroom to make a copy and put it in a specific folder, regardless of your working folder. Although, to tell you the truth, the concept of a working folder is not really necessary in the typical Lightroom workflow (no reason you can't have a working folder, but many people don't have one). In fact, I think a better idea is to use smart collections to indicate where in the workflow, a photo in particular is.

When you import, you have many options of renaming, even if I'm confused, you're going to end up with photos folder archived with one name and photo to work with a different name? Wouldn't be better to keep the names even if you need to replace the photo with a photo work of archive, you know what picture it is.

The idea of a workflow based on records was a good idea before you had Lightroom, but now you have Lightroom, a file-based workflow seems to be ineffective, and many people use the records to indicate the location in the things of workflow. This makes for a much more efficient workflow for many people, where you're not constantly moving photos from one folder to another. (You need the files as storage location, but not as part of your workflow. My photos go in folders by date of capture and they never move, and I never look in folders.)

In any case, I have noted as a last number that folder to archive and the working folder are not necessarily backups... they must be on a different physical disk if you intend to use them as backups. And also (must!) save your catalog on a different physical disk file.

  • I copied the folder iPhoto to my 'images' on an external drive and all photos disappeared both external drive and the iPhoto library. Do you know where they are?

Hello! I have a big problem!

I copied the folder "Images" that is default in my Mac on an external drive.

Inside the 'Images' folder, there is the iPhoto folder.

When I reopened iPhoto, all photos disappeared from the iPhoto library and the external drive. I left alone with very little, very old photos.

Do you know where my pictures maybe? Photos in iPhoto has also lost all the flags...

Thank you in advance for the answer...

  • Assistant Migration - copy a folder after a migration to the new computer

    Hi-

Today I created my new MacBook Air. I used Migration Assistant to transfer, wireless, my old MacBook Pro. I didn't have enough room so I disabled my music folder. After the migration is complete, I made little place on my new Air and represented the Migration Assistant. This time, I chose only the music folder. But the problem I have is that, at this stage, I am prompted to overwrite my account or duplicate... I don't want to do either... I want to just copy this folder on my existing account.

Sorry, this should have been posted under El Capitan. Just realized.

  • How can I copy the folder my documents in my iCloud drive and then I sync the two after that?

How can I copy the folder my documents in my iCloud drive and then I sync the two after that?

You can simply drag in iCloud reader, but I pass and move documents in their files app instead. It will probably take a while to download all documents.

It is not a way to sync without some third party software that synchronizes folders, or learn how to use rsync in the Terminal.

Instead of synchronization, simply use the iCloud drive in the 'Documents' folder after you move the files.

  • Copy the folder to update a x 220 to another system

    Hello

I have a lot of x 220 machines I need to update using ThinkVantage System Update. I was told that I can download all of the updates in the system on a single machine update folder and then copy this file to other machines. Then when they perform the system update, they will not have to re - download all updates and will automatically detect the existing files in the folder.

Is this really possible? I tried to copy the folder on the new machine Mode without failure, but when I reboot and run the system update, he always tries to download all updates, even if they are already in the folder.

    Thank you very much

    Jon

    UPDATE *.

I noticed that when I selected all recommended updates and all the optional updates, it took a while to download the files (my initial reason for the post), but when I chose only the optional updates, he flew in the download section.

I don't know why he cannot make reference to the local copy of the files for the recommended updates, but this seems to be the way to do it (copy the folder of the Session, then install optional updates and then let the recommended updates are descended from the internet as usual).

Please post a link to this Marilyn Microsoft engineer answer Support responses involving some registry maybe going to I can see that too.

Older versions of PowerDesk Pro 7.x are known to cause explore crash, so that the sounds on the right.

The current version of PowerDesk Pro is 8.5.

You might be able to get the old version to behave by disabling PowerDesk one shell extensions at a time until when you right-click Explorer no longer crashes.  This will leave you with limited functionality of PowerDesk since those afflicted extensions will be disabled, but you should not have these extensions to do anything, you need to make sheets.

I would start with the PowerDesk ZIP shell extension (I already know about this one).

It is a version shortened and changed my notes on the use of ShellExView (since you already think sheets):

Download ShellExView here to see what Explorer extensions you have loaded:

    http://www.NirSoft.NET/utils/shexview.html

ShellExView does not install anything on your computer, simply of runs and displays.

After launching ShellExView, under Options, choose "Mark non-Microsoft Extensions" and extensions not Microsoft will be pink, clear, but on some systems which is a difficult color to see, so click on display, choose the columns and move the column Microsoft closer to the top, so you can see on your screen without having to scroll left and right.

Click on the column header for Microsoft sort display (by clicking on the column of Microsoft) then all the non Microsoft extensions are on top and easy to see.

Non-Microsoft extensions would be things you have added (non-Microsoft) and are what you should be suspect.

You can also Google the name of a suspect add-on and see if there is any success on the mistakes of the DEP and what other people have done about it.

For example, you could Google something like:

Explorer XP crashing (you must fill in the name of add your suspect on.)

See what kind of search results hits you get and are looking for solutions or situations that sound like yours.

Right click and disable Microsoft no suspicious extensions one at a time take a list so you can enable them again later if you wish.

The result of the change is immediate and no reboot is necessary.  Test your failure condition.  If the Explorer starts to behave, you will know which extension is the culprit, then you can start to enable them one by one until the Explorer fails again.

Don't forget - disabling the extension does not uninstall the extension - it is just disabled so you can always turn it on again.

Disable them one at a time until your right click on do not generate an error, then restart and test again.  You have disabled the last extension would be suspicious.  You can then start to reactivate other extensions to zero on the extensions that are causing your accident

If the cause of the accident is a third party application or program, their may be a later version of the program available that solves the problem.

If you find the offending extension that's the problem, please let us know what it is that I can add to my list.

  • Copy a folder of media drive map

When I copy a folder of the SD card in the media player, I get a "Copy" dialog box for EACH file in the folder.  And it seems that each of them needs to be acknowledged by clicking on 'OK '.  Thus, a DCIM folder with 100 photos become a transfer rather painful indeed!

    Am I missing something?

After the latest iOS update, copy a file from a SD card to the Media Player works as it should, showing that a "Copy" dialog at the end of the process.  It will be a very slippery way to copy an entire a DCIM folder from an SD camera card, what keeps these records together and separate media player.

  • copy of folder - icon

Windows 8.1 a copy of folder - icon appears on the desktop which, when deleted, causes the symbol icon to delete also. How can I prevent the folder icon to appear at all?

    You are welcome.

It is always the last resort, but you could do a system recovery.  This should eliminate the problem.

If you have active Windows system restore, you may be able to select a previous point 'restore' and that might solve the problem, too.
