Corrupt Windows installation program?

I am runing Windows XP - SP3.  At one time in the last month, I think that my windows install or .net Framework has become corrupted.  I used the dotnetfx_cleanup tool and tried the msiexec /unreg & msiexec/regserver command to reset the .net service with no result.  When I try to reinstall the redistributable packages .net framework (v2.0, v2.0 - sp1, v3.0 and v3.5) I get an error message "windows install is not to be accessible.  I also tried to do a restore of the system without success.  I have several restore points, but when I try to run the system restore, looks like he works until the reboot is completed and the error message that the system could not be restored to the selected point.  I have several programs that are based on the .net Framework and really need to get back to work.  I recently installed Norton Internet Security 2009 but I took care to disable anti-virus and Firewall in downloading and installing features so I hope it's not the problem.

JParizek,
I suggest that you run a couple of things just check that the system is in good shape.

If you can boot into Safe Mode with command prompt, or if you have a XP CD and you can boot into the Recovery Console, and then run the following commands.

Chkdsk /r

sfc/scannow (you will need an XP CD for this command)

Then clean restart your PC and try to kick start the updates.

I have no idea where engaged Microsoft Support Engineer 'expert' is happening with these ideas and links - they don't make sense to me, but I'm not a committed Microsoft 'expert '.

Also, you don't have symptoms consistent with a need to run the System File Checker.  When they suggest that interprets it as meaning "I don't know what the problem is or how to fix it.

You must help us to understand what you mean by:

    corrupt windows installer

    And what it means:

I tried services.msc, but had no choice to restart what will I do

If you see an error message, what does exactly and when you see, and as usual we know nothing on your system, as well as conduit to guess.

Here is a fairly popular example of an error message Windows Installer can be what you see:

When you try to install a program or by clicking on the button 'Edit' or 'Delete' in Add / Remove programs on an application already installed, you see a message like this:

Windows Installer may be damaged or your computer is in safe mode

    or maybe this message:

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.
This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode or if Windows Installer is not installed properly. Contact your support team.

    First do the following:

Click Start, run and enter in the box:

    services.msc

Click OK to open the Services applet.

Look in the Services applet to see if the Windows Installer Service is still listed and you will find that it is probably not (but it should be).

If the Windows Installer Service is listed, make sure it is not disabled and if it is disabled, change the startup type to manual.  You can't set it to automatic as it will start on its own when he needs start and you don't need it starts every time that you restart your system and execution of all the day when there is nothing to do.

The Service will start when they need start if she is able to start.  Enough-click OK to save your changes and close the Services applet, reboot your system to make sure the changes 'stick' and see how things look now.

If the Windows Installer Service is completely absent from the Services, you must add it as follows:

Click Start, run, and in the box enter these commands one at a time by clicking on the OK button for each:

msiexec /Unregister (or you can type: msiexec /unreg)
    msiexec/regserver

Click OK after each command (there is no message about what happened)

Check in the Services applet again to see if the Windows Installer Service is now listed, and the startup type is set to manual, reboot your system to make sure the changes 'stick' and see how things look now.

  • Corrupted Windows Installer on the new Windows 7 laptop

I recently bought a new Dell Studio laptop, running Windows 7 (64-bit).  It is my first experience with this new version of Windows.  After search for and resolve a number of issues, I have still a few that I can't get rid of, and all these point to a corrupt Windows Installer (for example, when you try to install Windows Mobile Device Center, I get a dialog box saying "Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.  This can occur if Windows Installer is not installed properly.  Contact your assistance support team. ».  As is my personal laptop at home, I have no support staff).  I saw a number of detailed instructions on how to fix this in XP and Vista, but nothing specific to 7.  And when I try to find the correct file to download on the Microsoft site, all the ones I looked at seems to say that they are not compatible with my system.  Can someone tell me how to solve this problem?

First of all, make sure you have Windows Installer installed:

    1. right click on an empty area of the taskbar, and select Task Manager.
    2. click on the Services tab in top then Services button at the bottom.
    3. see if you can find the Windows Installer service and if its started.

    .. .on mine in manual/stopped.

If its missing or damaged for some reason, try to see if a SFC scan will fix it:

    1. click on start-> Accessories then do a right click on command prompt.
    2. Select run as administrator.
    3. type SFC/scannow
    4. a scan that will take a few minutes to complete turns on. If possible SFC will be auto-fix any problem files.

  • ProBook G1 430: Encrypted hard drive and the corrupt Windows Installation

My laptop has an encrypted disc using HP drive encryption.  Recently, the Windows installation has become corrupted and I could not repair the installation using floppy disks to install Windows because they cannot access the encrypted drive, nor can they be accessed by other facilities of Windows if I plug in the external drive.  The two methods see the Windows partition as a RAW format.  I guess it's only because the partition is encrypted and has no way to determine the actual format type.

I searched around to find clues as to how I could get past the encryption, but without success.  The computer is no longer under warranty, so I'm looking for options that will allow me to have access to the data.  The methods I've read all required the computer under warranty.

I can still go through the encryption after the computer starts, but Windows Setup gives an error and tells me that I must use an installation disk to fix.  I have attached a picture of the screen of the error.

I'd appreciate any help anyone could provide to solve this problem.

After much patience and time on the phone with HP, I finally able to return the encrypted Windows installation.  They gave me a copy of the WinPE environment was a software that allows you to decrypt a partition which was encrypted with their software and execute commands Windows on it.  I then ran the repair bootbcd order and I was able to get Windows to start.  To obtain this software, my case should be escalated to tier 2 support.

  • Windows Installer does not not after removing printers

OT: Problems with Desktop and Windows install

I hope that someone can help me, I have not had a good day!

I bought a new printer and tried to install it today and face a number of problems.

Assumed, perhaps wrongly, that I'd better uninstall my old printer first, am so I had to uninstall and done and then was asked to click to restart the pc and the process ends.  To restart the computer Desktop (screen) was all black and none of the usual shortcuts were displayed at all, just a screen black with a toolbar (I think that's what it's called) at the bottom of the screen.  Close the cursor (arrow) on the screen, there was also the 'thing' blue circular turning little and who used all the time as if the pc was working on something.

There were also up to 3 boxes that kept flashing for a few seconds that were similarly.  They directed the Windows installation program and if the message of preparation for installation but nothing ever installed!  I guess that it had something to do with the uninstall of the old printer?

I decided to try and install the new printer. After following all the instructions to the letter, and by inserting the CD to install the software, a message indicates to say that it cannot be installed as Windows Installer is busy and will have to finish first. It never ends well, then the system is blocked and I can't seem to find how to solve it.

The Office seems to be empty also which is a little disturbing.  As much as I know I have no security or virus etc problems and have never had this problem before.  The old printer used to 'block' and not always print or scan, where the reason for the purchase of a new.  It was 'risk to get' where it wouldn't print before I changed printers, maybe if the print statement is still in the pc somewhere and he is blocked somewhere, making it difficult to uninstall the old printer?

I also restored the pc a couple of times to restore earlier points, but it did not work.

I'm not an irritable type as you probably understand now!

    Hoping someone can help me?

  • associate the Windows Installer Windows XP .msp files

    Hello

I need to execute a file .msp (patch for a software) that would be associated with Windows Installer under Win7, but don't natively is not with Windows XP.  If I right click on the file and select 'Open with', the Windows Installer does not appear in the list.  If I browse and try to locate the Windows installation program, I don't know (I did several searches but not prevail).

    Hello

If I remember what I did was to remove the association for PaintShop Pro .msp files should open up PaintShop and then click on file > Preferences > file associations, and then DESELECT .msp format.

To make this work on Win7, you may need to start PaintShop with administrator rights (rather than simply clicking on the shortcut, right-click and select "Run as Administrator" for PaintShop now has the right to change the registry.

If you succeed, then the .msp file will be more associated with PaintShop Pro and should show as a no associated file.  Then, pair it with Windows Installer patch as I mentioned.  When you have finished installing the patch, you may want to reassociate for PaintShop .msp files, if you have graphics files with this extension.

    I hope this works.
