Cultivate the hard drive for the virtual machine fails but customer VI indicates successful operation

I tried to cultivate a 1 TB drive of 100 GB on a block size of 8 MB LUN with still 117 GB of free space. I thought that 17 GB of free space would be sufficient.

I had a successful operation task in VI Client after resizing this vmdk to 100 GB, BUT no real changes.

I tried adding 50 GB (117 GB of free) and the same result.

Only when I tried to increase 20 GB, then it worked fine.

QUESTION:

What is the percentage of disk space must be available on the LUN to cultivate a vmdk to 1 TB? It is a percentage of the vmdk file?

Why the VI Client would be a successful operation, but no change?

Your help is most appreciated.

Thank you

Bottom line first: you won't be able to easily overcome.

The reason is the large block size.  If you choose blocks of 8 MB, that's fine, but the trade-off is that even if a sub-block is used, the entire block is considered as unavailable for growth.  So, you have the space wasted in many of your blocks of 8MB.  It is considered as free, then you think you have enough space to grow, but in reality, there is very little, if any, blocks that are completely empty.   Unfortunately, there is no easy way to "squeeze" the blocks and/or move the white space in the 'clean' for growth blocks.

A lot of people think 8 MB is the way to go and use it all the time.  Not the case.  As with most things, there is a trade-off space-time.  Personally, I use 1 MB of size; It is a good choice of 'medium', memory load balancing and free space.

For myself, I don't have if worry VMFS, increasingly because if my store of data starts to be complete, I just grow on the fly with my Xiotech.  Can't use VI at all.

  • Convert a hard drive to a virtual machine

I have a server that the material died which has mirrored hard SATA hard drives in them.  I would like to convert the data on that hard drive to a virtual machine and put it in my vCenter, but I am unable to start the server.  What is the best way to do it?  I can mount and read data from Windows on another machine.  Right now I'm trying to back up data until an acronis image and then use converter to import.  I think it is easier to sense, though.   I also have a backup server Symantec Backup Exec, but I do not have the agent ESX for Symantec.

    Thank you

    Dave

If you want to try the converter, just fix the disk on a physical host somewhere and run a normal conversion.

Once you have done this, create a new empty virtual machine with no disc and you fix vmdk for the reader you want migrated to this new virtual machine. Chances are that you will get the normal NT Loader boot error when you try to start, but you should be able to solve this problem using a fo the following:

    DiskPart

    Fdisk

    Recovery Boot

You can also consider to use something else than VMware converter - perhaps something like Acronis True image?

Good luck and please feed back.

  • Partitions of hard drive on a virtual machine

    Hello

I have a few questions related to the hard drive on a virtual machine.

    1. is it possible to create multiple hard drive partitions (virtual hard disk, we can add, modify the virtual machine settings) that we have in our PC? In the case the ESX Server and Workstation?

    2. in WMware Workstation by clicking on change settings for virtual machine, I've added an extra IDE drive and allocated 1 GB of space, so now I have two hard drives. I said my virtual machine (Windows XP is the guest operating system), I expected to see the additional drive as "D:", but it was not! What stage is omitted by me?

    Thanks to AdvanceSalahuddin

    1. Yes.  Treat your virtual machine exactly as you would with a physical.

    2. yet once, as you would in a physical installation.  When you add a hard drive, you must go in disk management, select the new drive, create a partition on it and format the partition.

  • VMWare Fusion for Mac - how much space HARD drive is my virtual machine taking?

So, I am running VMWare Fusion on my MacBook Air, and I'm under low HARD disk space.  My Mac storage utility tells me that I have a ton of capacity used in the 'Other' bucket.  According to me, this bucket is where live VMWare Fusion.  As I understand it, technically, my complete operating system of Windows (including all files) is contained in a single file on the Mac side.  Is this correct?  Is it possible to see what capacity takes up my whole Windows Operating System (Virtual Machine)?  I hope this makes sense.  Thanks in advance for your comments!

No, it's not correct!  A Virtual Machine is composed of many files and folders according to how it configured and used.  On a Mac if created natively by VMware Fusion using values by default so all the files that make up a virtual machine are in all of the Virtual Machine that is structurally nothing more then a regular folder except the extension .vmwarevm, it is treated differently by the launch in OS X Services.  Take a look on: work with Virtual Machine packages

The files that make up the Virtual Machines from Windows/Linux systems and other places my being in simple ordinary folders.

Is it possible to see what capacity takes up my whole Windows Operating System (Virtual Machine)?

You can also see statistics for a given Virtual Machine by selecting Virtual Machine in the library because it displays size information, as well as on the General form of a virtual machine; s parameters.  Or look in the Finder and see the release of Get Info for the packaging of the Virtual Machine or the folder that contains the files that make up the Virtual Machine.

  • How can I add a data store as an additional drive for a virtual machine?

This is probably very simple, but honestly, I'm quite a n00b when it comes to networking and sys. Small business being at low cost...

OK, I have a HP DL360 G5 running ESXi 3.5 with 2 virtual computer management. The first is a cloned Win 2003 SME (I had to save the last days of server primarily was about to fail), the other is a Win XP VM (which is just share a single file to 6 users)

The server currently has 2 x 73 GB 10K SAS RAID 1. I installed another drive of 73GB 15K and seen in V: IC, I can add the storage, but how the VM of 2003 to see the new disk space? I need to be added as an extra, (e) disk in this case.

TBH I don't know even if I added the next Assistant in V: IC correctly except extra storage space.

    Any help will be appreciated

If the new drive has been formatted as VMFS3, then you can just change the settings of the virtual machine and add a disk.  Specify the new drive as the location for the new virtual hard disk.  You have two options on this screen.  Store with VM or specify the location.  You will need to specify the location.  Then, you can specify any size you want the new E reader to be.  Then in Windows, open disk management to complete the process.

This will be your easiest route.

  • How to make a visible USB hard disk for a virtual machine on ESXI 4.1?

    Hi all

As I am new to the world of vmware ESXI, I always make mistakes or I don't undertand all therefore be complete :-).

So I have a HP Proliant ML 350 G6 Server installed with ESXI 4.1 and I want to connect a USB hard disk to a virtual machine (SBS 2K 8). Currently, the virtual machine is not able to see the hard drive.

I already add a USB controller to the virtual machine, but my USB HARD drive is still not visible to my virtual machine.

    Can you help on that?

    Thank you

    Michael

Next, add a USB device to the virtual computer (in the change settings tab), there are different things, USB controller and USB devices. Sometimes, you may have to restart the virtual machine.

  • excluding the hard drives in a virtual machine cloning

    Hello

I want to clone a virtual machine that has multiple drives. The c: drive has OS (W2008R2) and is small enough, D:, E:, and F: are large (terabytes), and contain data. I need only the C: drive in the clone. Is it possible to exclude other readers during the cloning process? I clicked through the wizard, but it does not give me an option.

    Thank you

    Matthias

I would use the VMware Converter Standalone where you have a choice of which drives to clone.  http://VMware.com/go/converter

  • I have to make a new hard drive for my Toshiba laptop, how do I get my current operating system (Vista) on the new hard drive?

I already have Vista running. Last week I had to run the recovery disc that came with my laptop, now I am hearing cracking and screetching coming from the hard drive and it does not start. I intend to buy a new hard drive and replace it myself. How can I move the new Vista of the old hard drive?

My computer did come with an installation disc, only a recovery disk.

Probably you need to use the product key on your computer to activate Windows.

A fragmented file develops according to its use up to the configured maximum size.

A flat file is allocated in advance and all the space is taken immediately.

Pieces of 2 GB is created if this option has been chosen for the drive to run on hosts that do not support large files.

  • VMWare Fusion makes a break from the virtual machine because the disk is almost full.

Is I myself am sitting at my computer this morning, I saw a message that says the guest system Windows XP Pro on my Mac Mini has been suspended.  Here is the message:

"VMware Fusion has suspended this virtual machine because the disk on which the virtual machine is stored is almost full."

I can't find a way to shut down Windows to resize hard disk space allocation.  I tried the Virtual Machine menu, but all the shut down/put off the power points are grayed out.

    Any ideas out there?

    You must read the message!

BTW if force you the VM to the bottom you may corrupt the virtual system hard disk and or the VHD file and you need to just do as the message says and free up space on the OS X hard disk even if you temporarily move a few things on an external hard drive so that you can then reactivate the Virtual Machine and continue on the it.
