Daily ESXi NTP healthcheck service

Hello

We have the need to monitor the config and status of our ESXi hosts the NTP service and tried some of the solutions mentioned on this blog. The last one I tried was posted by "jaydo123" but seems to be for a single post.

Our goal is to interview guests and view state on a web page that could be controlled by our events team

Example of the info we need.

Hostname, NTPservice State, NTP server and the current time on the esxi host.

We will have the page to refresh every hour.

Has anyone ever had the need to do and if so any suggestions on getting this right.

Thank you

Johan

Take a look on Script: check the status of ntp and time on your ESX Servers.

It requires the use of plink to retrieve the current date of the ESXi servers.

  • ESXi does not service console?

    Hi all

    According to this http://hyperinfo.wordpress.com/2008/09/05/vmware-esx-and-esxi-comparison/

He said that only ESX service console and ESXi is not everything and must use RCLI.

But, isn't this console we receive from: F2 & gt; not taken into care & gt; root password, is a service console, which even we can ssh in?

    Thank you

ESXi "console" is there as a back door so to speak to support problems that cannot be solved with vSphere client, vCLI or DCUI.   The notable difference with the ESX console is that the ESXi console is not supported for daily use.  Also, it is not audited as this is the console for ESX.  See article 1003677 for more information.

  • ESXi ntp

What happens if the wrong setting ntp on the esx host ip address. for exaple 4A ip ntp esxi true setting but an ip of ntp esxi wrong setting?

The host may simply not synchronize time. If the host time is turned off, be careful with the time setting to avoid problems with the virtual machines running on this host. If the difference is small, you can try to adjust manually the time by 2-3 minutes every two hours until the host has the correct time and then enable NTP for the host. In the case of differences, this is probably the simplest solution to evacuate the host - i.e. vMotion virtual machines to other hosts - and then adjust the time to this host.

  • How and when are ESXi 5.1 Services identified as (Active Directory) - they used?

    Hello

I tried to find documentation for the three ESX5.1 services to understand when they should be or should be used, but have found nothing to help.

I have several 5.1 ESXi hosts managed by vCenter 5.1 (with SSO of course), as well as Active Directory configured as an identity Service.

In addition, I joined the hosts ESXi 5.1 for the Active Directory domain to allow AD authentication for host management direct when necessary.

It all works well, however, there are three Active Directory related services that are stopped, so I'm trying to determine if they should really be executed to perform certain functions that are not obvious to me at the moment.

    The three services are:

    • Local security authentication server (Active Directory Service)
    • Server connection network (Active Directory Service)
    • I/o Redirector (Active Directory Service)

I believe that some or all of these services are related to the integration of the 'same' in ESXi, but this does not really explain what they are doing, especially since I see no problems with authentication.

    Any idea would be appreciated.

    Thank you

    Rob Ralston

OK, I answered my own question. Turns out that I had a confusing situation because I didn't have to reboot the host after the join domain operation.

Now, all three services are started with the parameter 'Start and Stop with Host.

So, while I have not seen any specific documents, it is clear enough, that these services are designed to run after the junction, that make sense.

  • How do I restart the esxi remote management service

    Hi friends,

The ESxi Server console is on screen 'Marketing Management Service', we can get into the ESXi console.

So how do restart the serivce to the ESXi remote management?

    Thank you.

    If you can connect to the host, then you can run this: Get-VMHost | Foreach {Start-VMHostService - HostService ($_ |)} Get-VMHostService | (Où {$_.-Eq-clés "TSM-SSH"})}

  • Single ESXi NTP config

There is a lot of discussion about it in other communities, but I need to make sure I'm set up correctly for my environment.

I have no internal NTP servers, so I put the date and the correct time (my time zone) in the BIOS of my server. What about Setup NTP on ESXi I thought use pool.ntp.org. I've never used this before, but a lot of people here seem to use it.

My time zone is UTC/GMT + 2 hours (Sweden) and in looking at pool.ntp.org servers:

    0.se.pool.ntp.org

    1.se.pool.ntp.org

    2.se.pool.ntp.org

    3.se.pool.ntp.org

My simple question is should I enter all four in the NTP configuration, and I should also synchronize time from the BIOS of the server?

With regard to my VMs, I guess that I would like to use VMware Tools synchronize to the ESXi host and automatic time updates disable Windows, correct?

    Thank you

Not much you can do. ILO takes that is the hallmark of the system clock or an ILO agent running on the host operating system. In this case, ESXi uses offsets from GMT and resets the clock of the host at the time GMT. Might be worth pointing out to HP for CIM providers could communicate from zone information to the ILO?

  • How can I remove restore points created daily by Software Distribution Service 3.0?

Are not only all these points using the space on my hard drive to restore?

A better program of disk cleanup is cCleaner. Delete System Restore points may be important if you have little free disk space. The ability to delete them is one of the tools options. You can selectively remove those created in less important moments.

cCleaner also comes with a registry tool. Do not use this tool as any registry cleaner could lead to the creation of very difficult to resolve system errors.

  • ESXi 5.1 configured as a NTP server, do not sync with the Local PC

I have a 5.1 ESXi server configured as an NTP server and a Windows Server 2008 R2 local PC that are not sync.  I understand well, it is not recommended for ESXi, but I read [1] [2] that, whenever an ESXi server is running as a client, it also acts as a server, so I enabled as a NTP client in vSphere by ticking the NTP client, adding some servers to the server list, and then click on run, and I also activated the 123 incoming/outgoing port by adding the shell of ESXi firewall settings.

I'm pretty sure it isn't a firewall problem.  I completely disabled the firewall on my local PC.  Running "w32tm keyboardists computers: - IP address of the server -" give me the time of the server and running the software NTPQuery gives me an answer back on port 123 of the server time.

    I tried:

    - Date/time settings (right-click on notification area-> set date/time-> Internet time-> set as the IP address of the server) - sync fails (* an error has occurred while Windows timed with - server IP-*)

    - Group Policy Editor (Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates administration\systeme\service Time Service, currently disabled but because I heard this causes problems) - synchronization fails

    - The registry editor (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\W32Time\settings) - synchronization fails

    - Command prompt, using:

    w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:-IP of server- /syncfromflags:MANUAL /reliable:yes /update
    net stop w32time && net start w32time
    w32tm /resync /rediscover

This updates the registry properly, but the outputs "the computer did not resync because no time data was available."  And when I use the command "w32tm/query/source" the source is always "The local CMOS clock."

Your ESXi server response shows that the leap indicator is 3 and the server stratum is 0.

This means that ESXi NTP server is synchronized and unable to provide a valid reference time to customers.

We recommend that you configure your ESXi host with valid upstream NTP servers such as:

    0.vmware.pool.ntp.org,1.vmware.pool.ntp.org and 2. VMware.pool.ntp.org

as described in the KB article or alternatively your internet service provider NTP servers.

Although not recommended, you can configure ESXi to allow a reference time by using the own system clock

If you can not configure ESXi to synchronize to external NTP servers upstream.

UI, tab Configuration, using software (time setting), properties, Options, and NTP settings.

Specify "127.127.1.0" as your single NTP server. Don't forget to check the box "restart NTP service to apply the changes.

then click OK twice to close the dialog boxes. Wait a few minutes for NTP sync, then try your test.

According to RFC 4330, NTP-SNTP (Simple) customers must not use time in a package of NTP response if the

stratum returned is 0 (and the leap indicator is 3). Apparently, your client Windows NTP Simple is more

    the RFC.

  • NTP, not synchronization time in ESXi 3.5 u4

I have a server ESXi 3.5 U4 and set up an ntp server, using the vi client and made sure the service is running. but it seems that the ntp server does not synchronize time the esxi with external ntp server host. to check whether the ntp is syncing, I intentionally rewinding a few minutes using the vi client and with ntp running service and noted that the time is not corrected w/c leads me to conclude that ntp does not work. can someone point me to the right direction here.

    http://communities.vmware.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/7675/ntp.JPG

Make sure that DNS is correctly configured and that the ntp pool can be resolved. It sometimes takes a while to have the synchronization time. Ntp pool is random. You may have picked up a dead destination. Try to use a different pool and make sure you restart the ntp service.

  • No NTP synchronization

I have two different boxes of ESXi and I configured NTP on both. Or synchronizes time despite both claiming NTP is running. I stopped and restarted the service and tried the two IP addresses and host names. According to the firewall, the port is open when the service is running. If I set the time manually roughly outside right now, the vSphere client will display the time in red, but I don't know what that means.

I went to "time.nist.gov" because apparently used to synchronize our ntp servers in-house without the version indicator 3. We are supposed to use the servers of NASA, but I don't want to have command line change each ESXi ntp client.

  • File under ESXi versus NAS appliance server

We have a Netapp file server that is used for sharing files using SMB 2.0

I want to virtualize file services, since I have all the other virtualized servers

I came across two solutions for this under ESXi 5.1

    • Use the Windows Server 2008 R2 or Server 2012 file services role
    • Use Enterprise Martin http://www.Sanbolic.com/web_serving.htm . This option seems to bring some nice features on the single use of Windows Server

I did that three actions files with a be 2 TB, the other two are much smaller. If I virtualize file server, that I need to use virtual RDM or iSCSI initiator of Microsoft to present a volume of more than 2 TB.

Any thoughts on virtualization of files under ESXi 5.1 services?

With Windows 2008 R2, it can be done with Failover Clustering, and there are some things to know I suggest checking the document "Setup for Microsoft Cluster Service and Failover Clustering."

I know Martin Enterprise, so I can't speak to that one.

  • Install the Client Netbackup Linux on ESXi

    Hello

Writing on the subject, I just need to cold back up some files from my ESXi servers.

Since I'm starting now manage ESXi without the Service Console (OB... I really missed that!) I would like to know if someone was faced with the installation of the Netbackup Linux client 7.1.0.x on the new version of the Esx. On ESX 4.1 was really simple, and it worked!

    PS: Obiouvsly not help Symantec...

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello

Unfortunately, the general answer is probably to find a better way to do what you are looking for.

You don't generally install software on the ESXi host unless it is written specifically for her, which means usually only drivers.

If your application is designed for Linux, it has not been designed for ESXi and probably cannot be made to work.

No Netbackup there a VMware agent? Backup Exec certainly does, and you can back up files of the virtual machine cold or otherwise.
