DATA movement led to a new data store?

Hello

I have a Cluster with 3 esx servers. There are 2 LUNS for the shared storage, DATABASE LUN and SYSTEM LUNS, the OS is installed in the LUN SYSTEM and DATA drives are created in the DATABASE LUN. I will now get a new LUN DATA2, that has more space. I want the DATA disks only for the new LUN Database2.

for example:

Windows virtual machine: C:\ OS: SYSTEM LUN - D:\ DATA: DATA LUN.

I want to spend the drive D:\ DATA ONLY to the newly created LUN DATA2.

Any help is appreciated.

See you soon.

Well, if we talk about migration off the power, what is the advantage to go through all the additional steps to use vmkfstools to the console?  Just right click and select Migrate and use the button Advanced on storage put the drive where you want.  It is much easier and safer through the user interface.  Remove a disk, vmkfstools, etc. is a huge amount of work.  Keep things simple, I always say.

Since you are using a business license you can Storage vMotion, VM of for the new store of data without any stop.

  • ESX 3.5 move VM OS to a new data store

    Update of ESX 3.5.0 Build 4 153875

I have a front-end server, Exchange 2007 (2008 x 64 OS), which has only a single drive (OS) configured on a data store presented by Clarion AX4.5 SAN. I wanted to move this disk in another data store that has more free space and the highest performance, but I'm not sure of the exact procedure.

1 so I wanted instead of the disc on the data store runnign run it on the data store 2.

Can I clone it to the same ESX host and simply select the new data store? Or would it be preferable to P2V to the new data store. This seems like it should be simple, but I'm stuck on what is recommended for this. Of course, since it is the front-end exchange I want nothing to screw.

Thank you in advance for your help!

If you have virtual center the easiest might be to cold migrate stop the virtual machine and migrates - you can leave it on the same ESX host, but will give you the ability to move the virtual disk.

  • Move a vmdk file finely put in service a new data store - now it's thick?

    Hi all

To elaborate a little bit on the title, I installed a second hard drive in my ESXi 4 server.  All my VMs use discs finely put into service, however, after that I moved the files of the virtual machine to the new data store (using mv) and readded the virtual machine to inventory, the disks are provided are thinner but are thick.  This behavior is expected?

This is behavior expected - don't use mv to VMDK!

    Use rather
    vmkfstools-i thin d

who should be faster, more reliable and give you a choice for the type of provision

  • How can I move virtual machines from a local data store for a new iSCSI SAN?

    Hello guys,.

Now that we have a new iSCSI SAN market how can I tranfer all the virtual machine to a local data store for a new SAN? Can I stop the VM in the host, and then copy the DataStore files with all the info on the new volume?

    Thank you

Alternatively, you can use VMware converter or cold Migration / Storage VMotion if you have the appropriate licenses.

  • Move the location of the VM swap file in another data store

    Hi all

Was in a task to move the 1000 to the file location of VM swap on another data store which is newly assigned to Exchange us to the existing store database file that will be decommissioned.

Eager to check if anyone has made movement swap of VM location of the files to a data store to another and that all measures taken to move.

    Require some VM downtime?

    Thanks in advance a ton.

Yes it is possible without interruption of service to virtual machines.

    1. make sure that your cluster is configured to use swap data store specified by host

    2. take a host in the cluster in maintenance mode, change the location of the VM configuration file to point to the new data store

    3. do this for all hosts in the cluster

When you vMotion a VM from one host to another the swap file will get moved to the new data store. Later when you take guests to the maintenance and return output mode, vMotion occurs for each computer in the cluster virtual and file is moved.

  • Creating a new Cluster data store

    Hello

Can we move a data store in a Cluster of data while its machines store still virtual hosting?  I was not able to find information on this. What I find the Clusters data store talking about new environments.  I'm working on an existing vSphere 5.5 but the storage of data are not grouped.  I want to place data warehouses in a Cluster of quick data without vMotioning store VMS off.

    Thank you

    Boston Tech Guy

You can move the datastore in the store Cluster data without any downtime, and while VMS are running on it. (This is as same as you put cluster host, while VMS are running).

  • How to migrate pools with view to a new data store?

    See 4.1-

Have all the pools on the old NetApp storage block FC. You want to move to the new NetApp storage NFS.

What are the procedures we need to run to get there?

You change the settings of the pool and chang the dataastore for this pool to the new location.   Then after you can go into the options of composer from view of the pool and select the task of rebalancing.    It should move everythign to the new location of the data store.

  • Move a virtual machine to another data store

    Hi guys,.

I have a standard 5 ESX Server with storage.

I added new readers in server, created a new table and a new data store.

How can I move the OLD data store virtual machine to the new?

It's a single ESX host without vCenter.

    Thank you

Make sure that the virtual machine is powered OFF and removed from inventory and can SSH to the ESXi host and run the below commnd

    MV/vmfs/volumes/datastoreold/servername/vmfs/volumes/datastorenew/ServerName

  • Storage VMotion of Desktop pool (or move to another data store)

I just wanted to check something...

Maybe I need a pool of offices of a data store to the other. I was at SVMotion, but according to http://communities.vmware.com/message/1160464 it will not work. It looks like to make use of type svmotion, I should rebalance the pool by selecting the new data store that I want, unchecking the old data store, and then by running the rebalancing, which moves all of the old data store to the new. Is this correct? I just want to check this with someone who had it before I give it a try.

I can confirm that if you clear your current datastore, select the new data store and re balance that the virtual machine will be moved to the new data store.   I actually did this earlier today with a pool of persistent linked clone.

  • Comment fails to power after moving to a new data store.

I had this problem a lot where migrate machines. I navigate to the data store appropriate and right click on the folder of the guest, and I select "move". I choose the new data store and sit back and watch the progress bar. Once its migration adds the guest to the inventory and try to power on. Sometimes it works, sometimes I have to repeat the steps above twice. Why missing files when trying to turn on when I move the files this way?

Right-click on the virtual machine, click on migrate.  Follow the prompts for destination until you reach the Select data store.  Click the radio button "Move virtual machine and virtual disks configuration files" and select the new data store.

  • Towards a new VM data store

I have ESXi installed 4.  All management is done through the VSphere Client - no vCenter, no vMotion.

We have installed additional storage and created a new data store.  Now, I want to move a fully functional virtual machine to the new data store.

I'm naïve to believe that I can stop the virtual computer, use Explorer storage to copy files to the new data store, save it and fire successfully?

A few messages before indicate problems with snapshots.  The virtual machine in question has a snapshot, but fortunately, we can he lose if it will cause a problem.

    This works.

You can use the console not supported (ALT + F1) - type unsupported and Enter - root password

You can use Veeam FastSCP to copy to the new location.

You can use the converter to copy to the new location.

  • ESX3.5U4/VC2.5 - move vmdk to adequate data store and extend the drive on the virtual machine

ESX3.5U4/VC2.5 - move vmdk to adequate data store and extend the drive on the virtual machine

Objective: move vmdk to store data with adequate storage and then increase storage D: 20G to 100G

Converter is not available on this architecture. Can I migrate cold vm to the different data store, no prob.

Question: Without use of the converter, method 3 can be used without a secondary vm? In other words, just by using target vm offline, online, offline? Or is it a problem of signing/OS disk on the Windows Virtual PC?

I need to move vmdk in different LUN and extend drive vm windows on D: (non-OS drive). Is this possible via the single procedure? Options?

To use method 3 to http://communities.vmware.com/thread/81121 requires available vm 'secondary', I did not.

Method 3? Using of vmkfstools and another VM of Windows to extend a drive

o stop the VM to resize

o log in the console ESX Server via Putty

o Type? vmkfstools? X & lt; new size of drive & gt; vmfs/volumes / & lt; storage volume name & gt;. / & lt; virtual server name & gt;. / & lt; the virtual disk name & gt;? That is to say. /vmfs/volumes/Storage1/my_vm.VMDK new disk size can be specified in kilo, mega, or gigabytes and will be the total size of the new disk. So if you want to increase a virtual disk of 20 GB of 24GO you would put 24000 m or 24g

o the second virtual machine to help stop

o change the second virtual machine settings and add the first virtual machine hard drive

o power on the second VM and load the disk management snap-in and verify that the first virtual machine disk has unallocated on it space

o select Start, run and enter diskpart.exe

o the command? the list of volume? This will show you all the volumes.

o select your volume based on the results of the list volume command, IE. ? Select volume 1?

o type the command? extend? to extend the volume

o check again the disk management snap-in and the volume is expected to be expanded with a greater ability

o stop the second VM and remove (do not remove) the record of it

o turn your first VM and the new space should be there and ready to use.

Also, I'm already aware of Dell extpar:

    http://www.RTFM-ed.co.UK/?p=1310

    http://support.Dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us & CS = 19 & l = in & s = DHS & ReleaseID = R64398 & formatcnt = 2 & starts = 83929

for VI3, vmoiton of storage is made by RCLI plugin or a 3rd party

    I prefer the plugin

    http://www.virtualizationadmin.com/articles-tutorials/VMware-ESX-articles/VMotion-DRS-high-availability/storage-VMotion-SVMotion-VI-plugin.html

In addition, if the option to increase the size of the disk in the VIC is grayed out, it sounds like a permissions issue.  Finally, you can not extend the disc using the VIC, if the customer in question has a snapshot.

  • Move the VM of ESXi 3.5 to Vsphere 4.0 (host chang & data store)

I have a server ESXi 3.5 with 1.6 to with 20 VM local storage.

Now, I want to continue to set up a cluster with a fiber channel storage. I want to know if this procedure is correct:

Can I migrate the computer virtual host that esxi 3.5 for the new Vsphere 4.0 host connected to the SAN fiber channel?

Are compatible vm ESXi3.5 to vspehere 4.0?

once migrated all the VM I want format host ESXi 3.5, install Vsphere 4.0 and set the two servers in HA.

ESXi 3.5 and 4.0 vsphere host must have the same processor?

    THANK YOU TOO MUCH.

    Hello

You can move vms from 3,5 to 4, first of all, look at that if you move virtual machines in an othe data store, you must use svmotion or take off your virtual computer.

You can run 3.5 vms in an esx 4 without problem. So if you want to enjoy the v4, you must first upgrade vmware tools, and the last step is to upgrade the virtual machine virtual material.

Move all the VMS to the v4, and then reinstall the other server with esx4.

Check the vmotion compatibility matrix and evc cluster parameters, you can mix processors intel, but not mix between amd and intel.

    hope find it you useful.
