ESX 3.5 move VM OS to a new data store

Update of ESX 3.5.0 Build 4 153875

I have a front-end server, Exchange 2007 (2008 x 64 OS), which has only a single drive (OS) configured on a data store presented by Clarion AX4.5 SAN. I wanted to move this disk in another data store that has more free space and the highest performance, but I'm not sure of the exact procedure.

1 so I wanted instead of the disc on the data store runnign run it on the data store 2.

Can I clone it to the same ESX host and simply select the new data store? Or would it be preferable to P2V to the new data store. This seems like it should be simple, but I'm stuck on what is recommended for this. Of course, since it is the front-end exchange I want nothing to screw.

Thank you in advance for your help!

If you have virtual center the easiest might be to cold migrate stop the virtual machine and migrates - you can leave it on the same ESX host, but will give you the ability to move the virtual disk.

    Hello

I have a cluster with 2 data warehouses and I must "empy"one for then reassign the disks on the SAN. " However I seem to be in a situation of catch-22 virtual machines, I need to move/migrate is the VM vCenter. I need to have propelled him down to move the data store, but then I have no way related to migration. I presume that this requires a manual move/copy of the vCenter VM file to a data to another store, but not sure of the consequences etc..

Since you are using a business license you can Storage vMotion, VM of for the new store of data without any stop.

Select VM-> click on migrate-> select change Datastore Option

  • Move a virtual machine to another data store

    Hi guys,.

I have a standard 5 ESX Server with storage.

I added new readers in server, created a new table and a new data store.

How can I move the OLD data store virtual machine to the new?

It's a single ESX host without vCenter.

  • How to move a rule definition with the data store for esx alarm without re-creating the rule?

Hi, I would spend my rule of definition of alarm of the data at the level of esx store, without re-creating the rule. Is this possible?

In the Act, I don't want no definition of the alarm at the data store level. So, what is the best practice?

    Best regards

It is currently not possible.  The rules are hierarchical, and there is no way to stop the inheritance, or move messages.  You will have to re-create them at the appropriate level.

  • Move a virtual machine in another data store

    Hello

On our ESX 4, we have created pools of resources and multiple data on SAN warehouses.

To move that a VM resource with Betclic is very easy, but howto move a virtual machine from a to another data store?

If I understand your question you should migrate your VM to the different data store.

Right-click on a virtual machine, select migrate..., select Change location of data, select the desired data store, select virtual disk format (end/thick)...

  • Move an ESX3.5 to ESX4 data store

    Hello

    Here's the question:

I have actually 3 esx 3.5 with 3 data store connected from a SAN and each data store connected to all the nodes of esx and a few other virtual machine running on the data store local.

    And I also 3 new esx4 nodes.

What I want to do: remove the old data store without remove the virtual machine from the ESX 3.5 and attach directly to the new nodes esx4. The san connection is ok, im not scared of this point.

I tried to simply remove the data from the vsphere client store, but when you try to remove it, all the data in the data store is deleted, its now what we expect!

The question: is it possible? and how?

    Thx for your answers

Access to new hosts of data warehouses before cancel you them old hosts mapping. Make sure VM files are visible to the ESX 4 hosts, unsubscribe 3.5 VMs (directly, or simply migrate VMS 4.0 guests) one then disconnect warehouses of 3.5

  • DATA movement led to a new data store?

    Hello

I have a Cluster with 3 esx servers. There are 2 LUNS for the shared storage, DATABASE LUN and SYSTEM LUNS, the OS is installed in the LUN SYSTEM and DATA drives are created in the DATABASE LUN. I will now get a new LUN DATA2, that has more space. I want the DATA disks only for the new LUN Database2.

    for example:

Windows virtual machine: C:\ OS: SYSTEM LUN - D:\ DATA: DATA LUN.

I want to spend the drive D:\ DATA ONLY to the newly created LUN DATA2.

    Any help is appreciated.

    See you soon.

Well, if we talk about migration off the power, what is the advantage to go through all the additional steps to use vmkfstools to the console?  Just right click and select Migrate and use the button Advanced on storage put the drive where you want.  It is much easier and safer through the user interface.  Remove a disk, vmkfstools, etc. is a huge amount of work.  Keep things simple, I always say.

  • You can move to a new data store VMWare machine and if so, how?

Possinly a bit of a numpty question but here goes.

I created a VMWare machine, but VMWare files are stored on local storage. Now I'm assuiming that's why VMotion does not. My question is - is it easy to switch this machine in a store of data that is shared between hosts and how is it done.

If you are running ESX 3.0, then the simplest would be a cold migration.  Alternatively, you can use VMware Converter.

  • PowerCLI again migrate ESX host and new data store

I have 250 VMs that need to migrate to a new cluster and newdatastores, however, I don't see where I can do both in the apowercli script. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am really new to powercli and I am usingpowercli6.

Do you get any error messages?

  • Move the virtual machine in another data store

I don't know what's going on, I have two data warehouses and I moved my vm from one to the other, I had to create a new virtual machine to import the files migrated, when I opened the store of data for import only saw two files vmdk files, the first 00001 others a single vmdk file that contains 00 001 not opened when you import the second succeeded, but when the server starts, it goes up a very old version, as if it was newly installed windows 2003, I saw in the dishes, delta files files but don't know what to do, I tried to check the Snapshot Manager, but did not find anything there.

Have you ever tried to fix things? The attached .vmx file points to the correct instant hard file (scsi0:0.fileName = "Cezzanne - 000001.vmdk"), but the parentCID in this hard file is not correct!

In any case, after replacing "Cezzanne - 000001.vmdk" with that of archive attached, you should be able to restart the virtual machine. BTW. You can delete the file «.lck...» ». This is necessary on a NFS datastore.

Next time you copy a VM, do not create a new virtual machine. Only delete the virtual machine to inventory before moving and after moving it, click right the VM .vmx file and choose "add to the inventory.

  • Move a template in a different data store

I was dragging my VMs autour (evacuate the Bay SAN for her preparation for the firmware update) and I ran across a virtual machine model.  It does not seem you can migrate a model.   I need to convert it in a VM, migrate, and then convert back to a model?

I need to convert it in a VM, migrate, and then convert back to a model?

Yes - it will always be the quickest way.

  • Move a vmdk file finely put in service a new data store - now it's thick?

    Hi all

To elaborate a little bit on the title, I installed a second hard drive in my ESXi 4 server.  All my VMs use discs finely put into service, however, after that I moved the files of the virtual machine to the new data store (using mv) and readded the virtual machine to inventory, the disks are provided are thinner but are thick.  This behavior is expected?

This is behavior expected - don't use mv to VMDK!

    Use rather
    vmkfstools-i thin d

who should be faster, more reliable and give you a choice for the type of provision

  • Method to move the virtual machines in the data store temporary so I can rebuild pool recommended NFS

Our current data store is a mounting NFS on Nexenta (zfs), which has a pool, I need to rebuild (migration of raidz2 to mirror striped for performance). Initially, I was relying on the judgment of all virtual machines, create a new pool, copy (cp - r) of the Nexenta console all virtual machines to the new pool, recreating the pool mirror and then copy (cp - r) all the data back.

I have seen several discussions on this topic and seems like the simplest method would be to use the feature to "Migrate" so that the virtual machines are not fragmented. However in some of my pre-test when I copy a virtual machine between the basins of the Nexenta console it appears (from the data store Explorer) to initially create the vmdk provisioned and then once completed it copy looks too thin.

I hope that I can simply copy the Nexenta console, using the option "Migrate" in vCenter on each of my 40 MV looks like it would be * quite * tedious compared to the simple issuance of an order of 'cp - r' and leave all the copies of VMs (1.5 to) during the night and then adding them to each host.

Does anyone have experience with this? Or maybe a way to generate scripts easily (?) the option "migrate" in vCenter?

    Thank you all!

You can select multiple VMs in vCenter regularly using CTRL + click or shift + click and both migrate them as long as they have the same storage destination.  You can also schedule it as a task.    Add manually each computer virtual back in hand is not less painful than migrating individually, anyway.

  • How can I move virtual machines from a local data store for a new iSCSI SAN?

    Hello guys,.

Now that we have a new iSCSI SAN market how can I tranfer all the virtual machine to a local data store for a new SAN? Can I stop the VM in the host, and then copy the DataStore files with all the info on the new volume?

    Thank you

    Pesinet

Alternatively, you can use VMware converter or cold Migration / Storage VMotion if you have the appropriate licenses.

  • ESX 3.5 - move VM to a new disk/LUN

OK, I added a new 2 TB LUN to a standalone ESX Server. What is the best way to move one of my virtual machines of the old disk/LUN to the new disk/LUN? I like to keep the names and the same because the DNS name of the VM is the same as the name of the computer in ESX virtual.

    Thank you.

If you use vCenter and allowed to vMotion, you can make a storage vMotion, while the virtual machine is running (via RCLI or unsupported sVMotion plugin). If you do not have and that the virtual machine is in offline mode, you can just do a cold migrate by clicking on the virtual machine and it move to the new data store. This can also be done manually through the CLI through a manual copy with vmkfstools.
