  Thanks, but I have solved the problem. The error message was about 'file path or destination file name is too long. It is the backup to the temporary internet file that was causing a problem: he made the PATH too long as she added additional elements on the path. Tonight, I imported again a number of photos and videos in this folder, only to find out they were not imported after all as the file names already exist. Apparently, iOS uses IMG_xxxx.xxx for all that is shot with the camera and always uses the next available number.   Yes, the files can be recovered.  the best way to ensure that the data can never be found on a hard drive, is throw in a volcano or in the middle of the sea.  but most of the time an ordinary computer user will never see the remains of old data.  Should a particular expertise, unique and challenging software.

  You can't protect to delete the files that you created, you can always inform the user when the application launched by saying files are missing etc...

  As you are not sure of what you have removed for cause of your problems, I suggest that do you a system restore to a date before you start deleting these files, and then start carefully again, before to remove any file of dual control.

  Use Google or Bing to search for 'file shredder' or 'secure erase' software which will overwrite files with random patterns of data, making them unrecoverable by most of the efforts.  HOWEVER, please keep in mind that no matter what you do, away from physically destroy the hard drive, there are always ways to recover files even if these files have disappeared in a secure way.  That's why U.S. Federal agencies requiring a high security have their hard drives shredded into metal fragments when they have access to computers.

I'm not sure if the files that are missing (or lack, in my opinion) are not copied. When I finished emptying the directory, it shows that it is empty but the new directory does not seem to have any additional files that should be there based on the counting of the files before and after.

  1: right-click and then drag the pix on the external drive. Release the right mouse button and choose copy here. They are there?  Now remove it from the computer.

  2: you can see pix of the same name overwrite each other, or be done with (1), (2), etc.. But even in this case, they will be interspersed with the former. If keep you them in separate folders with different names, that should not happen. Personally, I rename all the pix before storing them. You can select the set instead of the code of the camera and a group, rename the first holiday 2009 yo and the rest will be renamed holiday 2009 and each havf will one (1), (2), (3), after them.

  It is also a nice freeware tool which, among other things, can rename a group of photos easily.
