Desktop icons not working not

I tried to install a program earlier for the notebook of the teacher through a program called PowerSchool.  In the end, the application does not work on my Windows 7 laptop, but I find myself with desktop icons that don't work anymore.  All the desktop icons, (Google, Firefox, Explorer, iTunes, Picassa, you name, are no longer works and have been replaced by the Explorer "e" icon.)  When I click on an icon that would normally connect directly on iTunes, instead a window pops up "view downloads Internet Explorer."

«View and follow your downloads»

Do you want to run or save this program?

What should I do so that my icons back to working relationships?

Confused,.

Jaime

Hi John,.

Welcome to the Microsoft Community Forum.

  1. You did it all change in the computer before the show?
  2. What security software do you use?

Try the following suggestions and check.

Method 1: Fix broken desktop shortcuts and common system maintenance tasks

http://support.Microsoft.com/mats/system_maintenance_for_windows

Method 2: When you open a file on a Windows-based computer, the file may start another program

Important: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click on the number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • The desktop icons not working not not & programs does not properly

I got pop ups from Windows Vista, which indicates that 33 files were infected and I could download Vista Security (or something like that).  I have McAfee I chose to leave warnings.  McAfee has run several full virus scans and found none of the 33 listed viruses.  However, none of my icons on my desktop works and I get error messages when I try to open Excel, Quickbooks and I keep having to select a program to open these files.  What should I do?

If I click on any desktop icon, I am invited to a screen that asks me to "choose the program you want to open this file".  I've recently updated for Internet Explorer 9, but this has been done because by clicking the Internet Explorer icon on my desk gave me the above message.  Basically, what I do to have my computer function normally (i.e. be able to use the icons on the desktop).  Can I have a virus?  McAfee, seems to indicate that I don't have.  All of this started happening when I received a message from Windows Vista stating that I had a virus on my computer.  Initially, I refused to buy the virus scan software because I have already and I thought it was a thing of sale.  Thanks for any info you can give me.  It's very frustrating, especially if I lose my data from office.

What can I do to get a fully operational desktop computer?

    Thank you1

I don't see where any of these Support Engineer 'expert' who is hired by Microsoft ideas will help you.

These ideas are just more of their prosecution of wild goose that will just waste your time.

Describe your current antivirus and software anti malware situation: McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, MSE, Panda, Trend Micro, CA, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, Comodo, etc..

How did you determine that all the files are still on C:?

See if you can get to by typing Ctrl-Alt-Del Task Manager.

Once you open the Task Manager, click the processes tab and see if explorer.exe is running or not.

If explorer.exe is not running (and must be), you will have the symptoms you describe.

If explorer.exe does not, in the Task Manager, click file, new task (run)... and in the open air:, enter:

    Explorer.exe

Click OK and see if your Desktop reappears and notice that explorer.exe is now a running process.

If so, you do not have 'fixed' your problem yet, but at least you will be able to maneuver if you can fix it.

We'll see if the 'expert' technical support which is retained by Microsoft engineer can pick up from here.
