Several desktop icons do not work on XP

Most of the icons on the desktop will not work. Internet Explorer works and all my web programs. Can download programs, but they will not run.

None of the programs execution function as regedit. I have a list of orders execution and none work. Some things will work in safe mode. Programs are not

work to start / all programs either. When you click on an icon the hourglass comes on for a split second and then turns off.

I suggest running command prompt and type:

sfc/scannow

and then press enter and let scan to proceed, and then restart your PC, see if the problem is resolved. If this isn't the case, follow the structure on:

    Hi kipepeoliciousslemani,

This problem occurs because of a missing or corrupted Rundll32.exe file. This problem can also be caused by a virus.

Follow the steps listed in the article for this problem:

  • the desktop icons do not work

All the icons and even folders do not work when I click on them.  If I right click on the icon or the folder it open quickly as before.

Is there an associated process that should run to facilitate icons to work?

    Hi DelZavala,

There are several things to try, and I recommend doing them in the order presented.

If you can access the internet somehow, if you use XP, go to http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm and scroll to the EXE and click, or double-click it to run the program to restore EXE file associations. Once done, do the same for LNK entry. That should restore your programs.

If it does not (although it does in general), try the following article (which is essentially what precedes, but made by hand): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923077.

Try a clean boot in XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316434. If the problem goes away then it's just a matter of tracking down the culprit at the origin of the problem. Follow the procedures described in the article. Once found, remove, delete, disable or uninstall. Once don't forget to reset your system back to the normal state, as described in the procedures. If the problem occurs in clean mode then just restore the system to normal and reboot - this solution will not work.

If this problem started recently, try a system restore to a point before the problem.  Here are the steps for XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084.

I hope this helps. Otherwise, back post and we will look at in other less likely but possible options such as infection or corruption of system files - but I honestly think one of the above will do the trick for you.

    Good luck!

  • multiple monitors - several desktop computers do not work

My computer continues to change the provision of workstations, monitors and funds from time to time. I have three monitors with different characteristics (a 4 K, two 1920 x 1200, attached to a MacPro (a mini DP, a HDMI and VGA adapter).) Whenever the machine goes to sleep (I never managed to find out when this is the case) it takes longer to wake up that the start-up of the machine and monitors keep switching wildly. The end result is order, that I had arranged for most of the day. But sometimes the office images disappear, sometimes they switch to a different view, sometimes one of them is doubled.

Is there a way to get rid of this nonsense? (My Office photos Dungeon change for a while and it started well before MacPro was invented).

"What Windows are on which screens" changes when the screens are not available. The reasoning is, if a view is not available, its windows are moved (usually at the main display) so that at least part of every open window is displayed on this screen to work, so that it can be manipulated, and the window is not "lost". (I haven't looked in the bottom of the screen how you treat.)

From your description, I conclude that at some point, your Mac has decided that some screens are "unavailable". It is a problem almost no resolved with poster several high-tech on the Mac Pro entries.

To display an image on a Mac, a screen should respond to a request of the Mac, "what is your name and what are your abilities?

    This request is sent:

    • shortly after switching on

    • When inserting the Mac end of the display cable

    • on the invocation of the Option-(detect screens) in the display panel

    • the waking from sleep

especially on high technology multiple input displays, the screen may not be "considering" the channel of secondary data for the port attached to the Macintosh, especially if its default value is not wearing his computer, or in the case of evil where:

    (a) the display is in sleep and

    (b) display is not designed to wake up until it gets a signal to an appropriate resolution display...

... (which will never happen unless it responds to the request of the Mac)

    --------

You should be sure the internal parameters (fixed on the screen, not on Mac) for each display are set to focus on the 'port' the computer connection on all others.

As often happens around sleep Mac, many users responded by not having not not their sleep poster, not having don't not sleep Mac, or both.

  • 8600 desktop icon does not

After a Windows 8.1 update, the icon on the desktop to my Office Jet 8600 has stopped working.  I uninstalled the drivers and then installed the drivers.  I've used all the avaiable trobleshooting assistants and they all claim that everything is installed properly.  The icon is the gateway to fax and scanning my PC without having to go through the printer.  Unfortunately, the installation disk is for windows 7 and is of no help to 8.1.  Thanks in advance...

    Hello GTR81,

I understand your Officejet 8600 icon on the desktop does not work after upgrade to Windows 8.1. I will do my best to help you! I noticed that you said in your previous post that you have three copies of this software on your computer.

You have three copies of the Officejet 8600 in devices and printers or where exactly on your computer? I recommend you clean this software. Follow these steps:

Please follow this HP document uninstalling the software of the printer. When it finished, I would like you to clean your Temp folder on your computer:

    (1) on the keyboard, press the Windows key and press 'R' together, then click on, and then type % temp % enter.
    2) press Ctrl and together on your keyboard (this will highlight all). Right-click with your mouse and select Delete.

Now, perform a clean boot on your computer by following this Microsoft document here. This will eliminate the conflicts of software that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program.

If your desktop icon does not work yet, I would recommend that you run this patch of this document from HP opens Assistant HP printer with an error in Script or in Notepad.  I know that you do not receive a script error, but this patch can help if your printer Assistant loading is not. I will seek forward at the hearing on your part have a good night!

  • XP... The desktop icons will not put

XP... The desktop icons will not put. I did a lot of research on this issue, read the different responses on many forums, including and have tried much of the recommendations... I'm not familiar with the functions of establishment of the arrangement of the desktop icon and this is the first time I met this kind of problem. "Lock Web items on desktop" is checked, "Snap to grid" is not checked (my preference, but I find that it will check mysteriously itself after the icons rearrange themselves to the left of the screen, apparently by making use of automatic reorganization, even if it is not checked), I tried securityguy14 registry change response dated December 7, 2009 , have installed and use the program "Icon restore" that changes the Recycle Bin, my computer, and another icon of office, I do not remember to add a backup/restore function for the setting icon on the desktop... is what bought me a brief period of mental health before they rearrange themselves after a few constantly unidentifable strike entered sometimes without "rhyme or reason", not unique to anything, preventing me from shrink down to a specific cause. I conducted several audits of malware with paid and free programs and there is no indication of anything invading my system, it works fine other wise. Help!

  • Internet Explorer hang ups and the desktop icons don't work

I have a 32-bit Vista, which has worked perfectly for almost 4 years until yesterday. Freeze the icons on my desktop and internet explore cannot open any other web site, after having opened the first web site. Once you close the web site, and then try another icons do not work for short cuts. The taskbar remains functional. I have to go into the Task Manager to close Explorer which rest spinning means that it cannot open. I tried a system restore to two days ago and he said there is a mistake, and he couldn't change my settings. Then I went to windows defender under programs to view current programs and I found several programs window internet explorer running even though in Task Manager, they were removed. Once I erased these stars, the icons would work, but only for the first attempt. Then I went to the Windows Defender and 2-3 lines of windows internet explorer is numbered. Why is this happening? For every time that you access internet prgrams multiple of the same are running and then hang up the entire internet and shortcuts icon freezing. Help, please.

    Thank you

Success!  All I had to do was reset internet explore windows. Fortunately, this did not clear all of my passwords or settings which I expected. The only change I noticed was the size of the screen. I had to change to fill the computer screen. I don't have to do a system restore.

Thank you and thanks for your replies to bab66.

  • on registration of the desktop icons are not displayed

Registration using Windows XP, the desktop icons do not appear.

You see only your background image and the wallpaper?

Miss all your desktop icons and you don't see the taskbar at the bottom of the screen or are simply missing icons and you can see the taskbar at the bottom?

Check the simple things first.  Right-click on an open space on your desktop, choose Arrange icons by and make sure the option show desktop icons has a check mark next to it.  This will work if you don't miss you that the desktop icons, but still see the Start button and the taskbar.  If you are missing as the Start button and the taskbar, which isn't your problem.

If only you can see your wallpaper background picture and don't see the desktop icons and no start button or taskbar, this means that the explorer.exe program does not run (and it must be running) or the explorer.exe program are usually afflicted.  A good way to think about at the moment, it is that the process explorer.exe "is" your desktop.

If this is the case of malware in general prepares.

What is your system brand and model?

What is your version of XP and the Service Pack?

You have a true bootable XP installation CD (it is not the same as any recovery CD provided with your system)?

Describe your current antivirus and software anti malware situation: McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, MSE, Panda, Trend Micro, CA, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, Comodo, etc..

Sometimes your anti malware program to quarantine (and indeed remove) your file explorer.exe (or other critical files on the XP system) if it finds that the file is infected.  The file may really be infected, but you can know for sure and then reconsider your anti malware options.

First, you need to get your work desk in order to have room for manoeuvre, then you can solve your problem of potential malware.

Of your background image, press Ctrl-Alt-Del and open Task Manager.

Look at the processes tab and if the process explorer.exe is not running, start it as follows:

In Task Manager, click file, new task, and in the Open box, enter:

    %windir%\explorer.exe

Click OK and see if get you your office.  If you get an error, we need to know what it says.

If explorer.exe is already running in the processes tab, it is likely that the object of the affection and will need to be replaced (which is not difficult).

If you notice that the explorer.exe process is already running in the Task Manager, highlight the explorer.exe process, and then click end process to stop and start a new explorer.exe process as described above.

If things look right now, your system is still not fixed, but it should be enough usable so now you can fix it.

I would start with these scans:

Perform scans for malware first, then these scans by operating clean, difficulty of problems:

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware detection programs:

    Malwarebytes (MMFA): http://malwarebytes.org/
    SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if you wish.

Please report back with information about your system and your results if you need additional assistance.
