Dictionary

It's great to have finally a decent looking and easy to find the dictionary on my Macbook Pro. But it is not an app on my iPad? I know that I can look up words I'm reading on the internet, but it would be nice to have just an app so I can watch a thesaurus Word/cheque at my ease.

I understand there are Apps out there, but I don't understand why Apple has not incorporated in its usual applications.

Unless I'm missing something? How I want a small square button that says "dictionary".

Thank you!

Not sure that you can press on and press and hold on a Word to bring up the definition virtually anywhere on the iPad, correct?

    Hello.

I have a question: I would like to add additional dictionaries in the Sierra of MacOS.

Initially, some trouble with record find "dictionaries". But this problem is solved here: where is the dictionary in the Sierra folder

    After that, I saw:

(It seems different from El Capitan).

In the folder "CoreDataUbiquitySupport" can't get the files with the .dictionary extension.  And throughout the system (I used Spotlight) I cannot find these files.

When I try to add my files with extension .dictionary in "Dictionaries" folder - nothing happened.

Please, help me. What should I do?

    Thank you.

  • Dictionary widget no longer works

The Dictionary widget no longer works after upgrade to "Sierra". It is extremely annoying, since I am a professional translator and use this widget all the time. Does anyone know if there is a solution to this?

    Best regards

Ran into the same issue. It seems that Sierra is not any dictionaries installed. Start the Dictionary application and download the dictionaries that it provides. Once completed restart your machine or simply kill the process dashboard. The Dictionary widget will be fully functional.

  • Where is the dictionary folder in the Sierra

    Community salvation.

I have correctly installed Sierra on my Mac. Then, I want to add a bit of my dictionaries to the dictionary.app. In the previous OS X, there is a "Dictionaries" folder under the / library with all the system default dictionaries as English, German and Japanese. But now, in the Sierra, this file is missing!

If you have any ideas, where should I put my dictionaries under Sierra now please? Thank you very much!

    Hello!

You can find dictionaries in the library of the user.

    Thank you!

  • Dictionary find definitions

    Hello

Since the installation of Sierra, I experienced some problems with the Dictionary application. I'll try to explain this in the least difficult way possible. So whenever I try to do a quick search of dictionary-based on Spotlight, Spotlight gives me no results for dictionaries monolingual English. This means that if I have the New Oxford American Dictionary and its corresponding Thesaurus, Spotlight do not think everything about these dictionaries and keep will show the results of dictionaries, I disabled it, which in this case is the bilingual Italian-English Dictionary. Now, as much as I appreciate see entries from the dictionary being translated in my own native language (Italian), I would also like to see the entries in the monolingual dictionary on Spotlight, I strongly need for my work. In short, I'm looking for something similar in view of that context when menu shows you yellow - highlight a Word while, for example, surf Safari. I have no problem with context menus because they show all the dictionaries that are enabled in the dictionary application preferences window. To summarize, it looks like that Spotlight does not recognize these two American dictionaries (I also tried with a Dutch-English Dictionary) and continues to find definitions for the bilingual. This phenomenon happens to you too much on the Sierra? I would also add that, as a countermeasure, I did the following: deleted the file com.apple.Spotlight.plist in the folder of user library, re-indexed Spotlight, tried on a new account user without result, disabled the definitions in Spotlight, moved preferences box and down the dictionaries selected in the pane preferably small in the dictionary.

    I appreciate your comments,

    Francesco

The question I did experience is otherwise.

I depend a lot on the context dictionary and see that it is missing, once upgraded to 10.12 is a bit annoying, not because I can not find how to fix it (because I think I have), but I'd need to know where to do this. Whenever I write a strange word, I try to make sure I use it properly. However, when I 'Look Up' a Word, I get a wikipedia article on a group of rock or something unrelated, like the component dictionary was gone by default.

Only by reading this thread I was able to launch the dictionary application - which immediately began to download a copy of the New Oxford American Dictionary. I guess my next task is to find an easier to apply dictionary (Canadian) and understand how to install it.

  • Bug in El Capitan Dictionary widget

The widget dictionary in the dashboard area does not resize to match the text when you look at a definition.

Yosemite, it is automatically resized for content of text looking for a Word, and you can also resize the window further if you preferred.

    Please see the attached screenshot.

I can assume only it is a bug, does anyone know a work around?

    Software: OSX El Capitan

    Hardware: iMac, retina

  • Default dictionary problem

I used Firefox for many years, but I still have a problem with the dictionary.
I'm from the Italy, and I use Firefox Italian. If I install English Dictionary, it becomes the default dictionary... and I can't return this setting (I must always select the Italian dictionary when I type).
The only way is to uninstall the English Dictionary.
Could you make an option to select the default dictionary?

Have you tried to change the pref spellchecker.dictionary to 'it '?

How to remove a Word from the default dictionary of firefox?
If I wanted to remove the word 'dog' or 'and' for example

There may be a range of reasons for wanting to do this, including the deletion of the words you use rarely as similar to other common spellings used words for example. "minute" and "Minuet", delete the words that you find personally offensive, or removing words that, because of linguistic or cultural background, you would not consider words at all.

Note that I'm not asking how to remove my 'dictionary' words, words that I added myself.

    Hello

I talked to a few people and I think I'm able to help you with this.

There are two dictionary files, the default that comes with your version of Firefox and personal 'custom' that you create yourself with phrases and words.

    If you want to change the personal;

    1. Copy Subject: support and paste into the address bar.
    2. Next to the profile folder, click the marked File Show
    3. Find the file persdict.dat. Rename a text file, open, modify, re save it as persdict.dat and replace.

If you want to change the default dictionary, it could be more of a problem and a lot more technique to do. I would recommend that you look at the problem differently and consider filtering of pages based on inappropriate content using Add-ons such as ProCon Latte Content Filter.

I hope this helps, but if not, please come back here and we can look at another solution for you.

  • iOS 9 Dictionary Manager does not work

The dictionary built into iOS 9 does not work. When I select a Word and press 'Set,' the dictionary pop-up and reads, "No definition found," so I tap on "Manage" in the lower left corner, and it takes me to another screen where should be the list of dictionaries, but instead, I have an empty list. The "back" button and the gray divider lines appear but nothing else, so I'm not able to download dictionaries. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

Exactly the same problem - cannot manage dictionaries on several iOS 9 (9.3.3) devices (not delete or download features available).  I tried to reset the settings, add/remove languages, access applications different and same result (handle no longer works).  Apple has removed support for dictionaries?

  • How to keep English as a default value in the spell checker after adding another dictionary?

I added a Spanish dictionary for firefox that I sometimes email Spanish-speaking. Since then, the spell checker has stuck to Spanish language by default whenever I restart the browser.
As soon as I select English, it remains until I close the browser. But goes back to Spanish when I open a new window.
I tried every setting I could find, and I also tried to remove and reinstall both languages via add dictionary.
I am at a loss. Can anyone offer some advice?
    Thank you

You can check the spellchecker.dictionary pref setting on the topic: config page and if the pref tells the user the value (in bold) and then try to reset via the context menu to the default value.

You can open the topic: config page via the address bar.
You can accept the warning and click on "I'll be careful" to continue.

If you do not keep the changes after a reboot or have problems with preferences, see:

  • Built-in dictionary does not not iOS 9.3.4 (with photos)

I just bought my Pro 9.7 "iPad yesterday so that I can use it when classes will resume. I read a scientific paper when I discovered that the "Define" function in iBooks was not working. It is same for Safari, Notes, E-mail and other applications where you can select and set a text.

Problem: When I select a text and 'set', a pop up appears and says that there is "No definition found." And even when I select 'Manage' there is no options available.

Curiously, the dictionary in my iPhone 5 s (running iOS 9.3.4) works perfectly.
