Disable "Snapshot memory of the machine.

Hello and thank you all in advance!

Does anyone know how I could disable the 'the snapshot device memory ' option when a user vRA will take a glance?

Nevermind - I "guessed"...

For those of you looking for this and similar type items - the key is the ASPX pages on your boxes IaaS...

Go to your IaaS install dir (\vCAC\Server\Website\Leases)

You will find the ASPX pages for all generated pages. Better that I can tell (and I have no idea if this is supported...) These are the live generated pages to queries, reconfig, etc etc.

The CreateSnapShot.Aspx (backup the ORG one!) a snapshot application form controls. I added the following to the MemoryDumpRow Section to disable the checkbox control (we do not want to allow our users to take memory snaps):

Enabled = "false"/ >

The ConfirmNewRequest.Aspx (backup the ORG one!) has all the goodies for the application form.

It has a few cool options to hang out with, a good thing, I found for the field of memory. Since this tool, it's infinite wisdom does memory in MB instead of GB adjustments (would be nice to have an option to change that, but I can see logical both ways, I suppose), we wanted to prevent some users from incorrect selection of the Nations United-1024 of the sizes of memory which would in turn generate some support tickets. So looking for a way to change a label, I stumbed to a labeled 'SnapToMultiple' value (see below the)-I noticed that this value has been set to 4, then immediately noticed this was connected with the up/down arrows on the selection of memory in the application field. So I thought, why not? I put it to 1024 (in bold below) and now the user cannot select a concert at a time. It also works if the user wants to enter a number manually, it will force the selection of memory to the nearest multiple of 1024 for them as soon as they change to a different field or click on submit! BOOM!

See the section below

SnapToMultiple = "1024" NumberType = "Integer" AutoPostBack = "True" OnNumberChanged = "ResourceValueChanged" / >

If you make this change, do not forget to change the same value in the EditVirtualMachine.aspx for VM reconfigure!

Enjoy!

  • What is better - a snapshot of the machine powered on or off?

    Hi people

Can someone tell me what is the best when taking snapshots of a virtual machine... or not?

I tried one on today and could see the process and the file become approximately 130 mb in size. Then I took one with the machine off and I couldn't see the progress and it became only a few KB in size?

    Can someone enlighten me please!

    mehart

When you take a snapshot of a VM under tension, VMware also takes a snapshot of the current memory. -In addition to other things - is stored in the file vmsn. Usually, I take snapshots of my VM Workstation when (if possible) turned off.

  • Snapshots - how to save the State of the machine before deleting

    Hello

We have a production VM on a cluster host ESXi5, which was taken earlier (nearly 2 years?). Of course, I want to get rid of the snapshot that he shouldn't have spent so long, and after some research, I'm pretty sure deletion will do what I want (I want to keep the virtual machine, as it is now with all the changes since the snapshot).

However, I also want to take every possible precaution before to do this because if the changes are cancelled (i.e. if returned to the State of origin before the change), it will create a good amount of work, and I want to keep the virtual machine, as it is currently before deleting the shapshot.

Is this possible? I read cloning will not clone the snapshot of the files themselves, but the cloned VM will contain changes since shapshot has created or will it be the VM before the snapshot? If the clone itself is a copy of the current computer running (changes since snapshot included), this could be an OK option.

I don't think another solution could be to stop the VM and copy the VMWare real files somewhere - would this work?

I am probably being a little cautious with this, but I'm a little nervous about snapshots and I want to make sure that I have all the bases covered... just in case...

The virtual machine is saved so as a last resort I can restore from a backup, but I would rather avoid this path if possible.

    See you soon,.

    Tim

This snapshot that one is associated with your virtual machine, which is 2 years old?

what you think is right about removing it. If you just run this snapshot delete operation, it will merge delta with basic disk (since you instant is very ancient, the size of your delta is probably very much, in this case, this operation may take up very much time to complete) and resulting VM will be your last VM with all changes made after this snapshot was taken too.

At the time of the snapshot, Deleting, you must also remember that there should be enough space available in your data store where you VM resides, if possible to reach downtime, then make the deletion of the snapshot while VM is powered off, or try opening the process during off-peak hours.

I'm sure you might have encountered following KB already as you have done enough research on the topic

VMware KB: Delete all snapshots and consolidate Snapshots feature FAQ

I read cloning will not clone the snapshot of the files themselves, but the cloned VM will contain changes since shapshot has created or will it be the VM before the snapshot? If the clone itself is a copy of the current computer running (changes since snapshot included), this could be an OK option.

Cloning will also do the job. Yes cloned VM will be for blocks of basic disk and disk from Delta and merger while then resulting VM cloning will be having only basic disc with all changes that you made after the snapshot.

I don't think another solution could be to stop the VM and copy the VMWare real files somewhere - would this work?

The virtual machine is saved so as a last resort I can restore from a backup, but I would rather avoid this path if possible.

Keep copy of all the files in this virtual machine a safe, desirable for you, but at the same time if you have the frame of this virtual machine already successful backup made so nothing to worry. Your virtual machine can be restored from that successful return. If you want to test the restoration, why not restore you this virtual computer on an isolated network and not little a test for your complete satisfaction before proceeding to deletion of snapshot.

Note: Do not operate upgraded, this will put your VM around 2 years back State at the time of the creation of the snapshot.

  • Use of memory in the guest virtual machines

    Hello

I don't have any background on VMware technology, but we are using a facility of dynamic cloud based on vCloud Director to the company where I work.

The group that operates the server publishes the offer with a 'pay per use model"of service.

This is true for the CPU resources, as we pay only what we use in the month. But in my opinion, it does not for the use of the RAM.

We have Linux VMs that allocate a 4 GB of RAM 'physical' and our monthly bills show that the RAM usage is at 100% for all the month. But when you look at the tools of memory for the virtual machine, you can see that most of the time 50% or even less is used by the guest operating system process.

This means from a user perspective the RAM price per month should be half of what we are responsible now. Ask operators on the 'question', we always get the answer that the use of the RAM is not dynamic and we need to pay for the use of 100% from the point of view of the server host.

Could someone share some light on this subject? Is there really no way to make use of the dynamic RAM as the CPU usage?

    Thank you

    Michael

    Evening,

As a service provider, I'll let you in on the secret:

    It depends on

vCloud takes care of three models of default allocation.  Your provide may use other

-Pay for what you use. -pay as you use

-Allowance - you get resources, but can burst more

-Booking - you get allocated resources and is

Chargeback depends on model (in out of the box chargeback... your provider might have something custom)

Pay as you use - charged on the basis of the resources used

Allowance - remuneration based on allocation and additional for burst

    Allocate pay based on booking-

There in the last two models really no way to load except full allowance (i.e. 100% cpu and RAM)

Statement, I think you have something along the lines of the compensation you are using you mixed with a price system vendor.

From my experience the resource more used in ESXi clusters in the RAM.  That's really what I buy in clusters of resource... I always need more RAM.  I need no more CPU. In addition, distribution of the CPU to vcloud is made via Ghz is not CPU.   RAM is allocated by GB.   So those set up and I think you suppliers is betting that they will always have to RAM so they charge based on usage not allocation.  While CPU, they have tons while they charge by usage.

Really, it's just my thoughts... What can charge you on:

    -Ghz processor

    -GB of RAM

    -GB of storage

    How can recharge you:

    -Used

    -Allocated

So bottom line... they can charge by opportunity they choose not too...

    It will be useful,

    J

  • Not able to add the snapshot file to the virtual machine

We have Win 2003 virtual machine running on ESXi 4.0.0 261974. The virtual machine has two vmdk files. We had taken the snapshot a few days back and today by mistake, we have removed one of the vmdk (DB - srv - 000001.vmdk - snapshot file). Now, we are not able to add the snapshot file to the virtual machine. When tried to add the existing vmdk, it displays only the source disk (DB - srv.vmdk). Please, help us to solve this problem.

The GUI allows only adding the base vmdk. To add the Flash disk, you must manually change the vmx file. Registrations for the formerly removed virtual disk could still exist in the vmx file with... .present = "FALSE". After changing the vmx file you must reload the configuration. To do this, remove the VM of the inventory and add it back again (right-click on the vmx file).

Actually linked Clones ARE available for VMware ESX all types of guests. VMware View uses the clones related on ESX 3.x, then yes it is possible.

You must use http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-9020 to create your clones related on ESX 3.x
