DNS is?

DNS server.

To resolve connectivity issues sometimes professional of computer science will be asked to change the DNS servers used by your computer.

I personally do a lot here in HP Forums.

the reason is that I am eliminating the likelihood that what you are experiencing is due to DNS resolution conflict. So that it do not understand what is this or the goal.  I created this article in the form of a post with the intention of explaining what it is and why we are asking this measure to take.

It's for people who do not have a lot of experience networking and or knowledge in the use of jargon in the field. Is not intended for professionals in the implementation of network and computer or users with a lot of experience due to the fact that I won't go into the details of the advance of the time Service.

Let start by understanding what is the DNS server and the way in which your computer uses.

The domain name system was invented originally to support the growth of communications by electronic mail on the ARPANETand now supports the Internet globally. Before DNS, we used most of the time a simple system called the system of host table name, now we use a more robust system of DNS (Domain Name).

To have an Internet experience, having a reputation system is vital for the operation and due to this DNS is an important part of the network as a whole.

After TCP/IP is the set of protocols for network usage and most use in the world today is used by Microsoft, Apple and Linux for networking.

This is a quote from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The domain name system (DNS) is a hierarchical distributed naming system names for computers, services, or any resource connected to Internet or a private network. .

  • It associates various information with domain names assigned to each of the participating entities.
  • Resolves queries for these names into IP addresses to locate the devices and services all over the world.
  • By providing a worldwide, distributed keyword- based, redirection service domain name system is an essential part of the functionality of the Internet . »

DNS stands for DOMAIN NAME SERVICE, this is a list of websites (database) on your network to use when tries it to find the a webbing in the internet. This allows you to enter a name easier and more convenient in the address bar, then you will have to, if this service does not exist.

For example if you want to type 15.216.110.140, 15.193.112.142 to get a web site that is important to you and how do we determine what site is that it will be hard for you, it will be difficult if not impossible for me who have years of experience in the field. It's the IP address of www.hp.com you see that it's easier to remember because we can we can associate with the company we want to access and more is evidence that we can remember more easy words

Why ask us for the change?

Most DNS servers are very reliable and work properly that is why most of the user do not know what they are or even they are there.  But sometimes as any other database a record or records can get corrupt, that either other factors created this list do not work because we are use to.

To isolate the problem, you will see a lot of professionals you will be asked to change the DNS servers used by your computer. This number matches the DNS resolution problem.

I do this as a standard troubleshooting steps when connectivity can be a problem. It is a simple process, and can save a lot of problems if you're actually the problem that you are facing.

Since I'm a Microsoft Certified Professional I will talk of windows t and how to assign DNS servers in this operating system in the future, I'll explain how do on several other operating systems such as Mac OS, iOS, and perhaps even Linux, although I think you're adventurous enough to use Linux or any distribution of it.  You know what I mean. and do not need a lot of explanation on this topic.

If you are using windows go to this Article in the Microsoft Knowledge base and he will guide the process.  http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/change-TCP-IP-settings

I hope this explains what it is and how it can affect the tranquility of network connectivity.

Really hope that this is useful for some of you;

    Hi gwanupnorth,

After checking with file-> Refresh in ARD Admin and there are still agents machine correct without DNS:

-Check in the list of the scanners of ARD Admin, if the machines of 18 or more are detected it with the correct DNS name.

-If Yes, click on each one and update the username: password: and it should update the corresponding entry in all computers.

  • Setup Airport Express: how to manually set the IP address and DNS?

I just bought an Airport Express for the wifi in the ethernet cable that I have in my dorm room.

To connect to the internet via the ethernet cable, I need to enter a number IP, DNS, gateway and mask provided by the dorm (as I did on my Macbook).

The problem is that I don't see where I can do for the Airport Express. After I plugged the cable into it, it keeps wanting to configuration alone, which does not work (he's trying to "join the network" forever, without success).

  • DNS services using data much more than before with iOS 10?

    Hello

I have upgraded to iOS 10, since the GM became available.

A few days ago I noticed a spike in my use of the data on the report of my career, and I went to check on the iPhone, which was the cause. To my surprise, the culprit was DNS Services. The 515 MB I had used since the last reset (I have reset the same day as my service provider, on September 13) 466 MB were the DNS Services.

On the carrier app I see that there are seven 16 490 MB consumed, compared with an average of 15 to 20Mb per day. So I guess that most of these 466 MB were made that day.

466 MB of DNS queries are now something like 5 billion queries. Without WiFi connectivity, I was this day a total of 90 minutes maybe. Now, I did not use the iPhone except to listen to music (60 minutes walking the dog, another 30 on the car). I can't figure out how or what makes these applications.

I reset network settings that day and things were back to "normal". Except that today ' today I see that there is an another 20 MB of queries DNS deployed since the 16th century. 20 MB of DNS request are always * a * much.

Has anyone else noticed a greater amount of DNS requests with 10 iOS?

Now the weird part is that everything was normal before the 16th century. And I installed the GM the day, it was released (which was... 1 week or two before?) and I were on the betas since weeks before. I can't remember or see something different or special made 16. A few days earlier, IIRC, there are a few updates to the carrier, but why or how, which would produce an increase in DNS queries?

I tried to speak with the Apple Support, but the girl I mentioned with just told me incorrect and illogical things and got offended when I asked if she knew what a DNS query and closed the chat session. I guess I won't get any help there.

Just for comparison: iPhone from a friend a total of 6.1 MB of DNS services for almost a year of use. I'm sure that the values will be around that mark if someone check their info.

So, is it possible to follow what requests have been made (by which App, or what name has been resolved) so I can try to locate it?

I'm trying to restore the iPhone, hoping that things will return to normal, but without knowing what and why it happened there is just a long shot.

  • DNS settings for the intranet server is not not a DNS

I have an OS X server that services the on the local subnet (behind a NAT).  We have moved to a new office and installed a new firewall / local DNS and all other machines can resolve names of local computer.  But the OS X Server solves only them to the machine gateway/firewall, rather than solve them for local machines.

If I disable the server App DNS, resolved names.  But I seem to remember that I'm not supposed to do disable the OS X Server DNS, set it instead to forward requests to the gateway.  Unfortunately the Google Machine isn't helping me, because every sentence google I can think on OS X Server and DNS settings show how to use your OS X Server as a DNS server for the computers on your network - which is not what I want to do!

Which, in my view, should run is listing the gateway as a forwarding server, then tell machine OS X to "Search for only some clients" and "The Server itself" selection in the dialog box "Edit Search Clients.  But it does not work.

    Any help appreciated, thanks.

Two things you need to do:

You must configure the host/domain name on the server and/or point the DNS address in the network preferences for 127.0.0.1

Once you tell the server to perform searches in its own recursive cache/internet to 8.8.8.8 * or your dns public server here *, then it stops to pass requests to the gateway.

Then set your DHCP server to serve IP addresses in DNS (10.0.0.5) servers to clients.

    Example:

    * Client DHCP address request *.
    10.0.0.10 - IP
    255.255.255.0 - mask
    10.0.0.1 - gateway
    10.0.0.5 - DNS

  • Add DNS - network settings, the parameters of the airport or both?

I didn't know there are 2 places for that - and I'm not sure that works best.

Recently added 6.6.6.6 and 8.8.8.8 to try to speed up Web sites that have been loading slowly, as suggested these tips very. I have added in the network settings, but then recently realized that my extreme settings of the airport have a place for dns as well.

I do not understand the difference.

Your Mac setting only controls your Mac.

The parameter to your Airport Extreme allows to set any device on your network.

If you have only one device, there is no difference.

But suppose that your family has 9 network devices: two Mac, a PC, a smart TV connected to Netflix, four smartphones for parents and children and an iPad. If you enter the DNS settings on your Mac, this is the only device that will use the DNS settings. But if you enter the DNS of your network (Airport Extreme) router settings, which becomes the default DNS for any device on the network that does not have its own DNS settings entered. You have only to change DNS setting once, not 9 times for all these devices.

For all my devices that stay at home, I get the DNS on the router addresses, and the devices are all set to look at the IP address of the router to get the DNS so that all devices follow the DNS from the router configuration. For all devices that leave the House, I get the DNS preferred settings on those so that they will continue to look at my favorite, DNS settings even when they are connected to the network of another.

  • express error airport; No DNS server address

    OSX El Capitan

    10.11.6

    MacBook Pro mid-2009

Coupled with Airport Express Airport Extreme.

Time Warner Cable improved the internet in our area and it took a new modem. At the new modem and Airport Extreme works with it, having to put the modem in Bridge mode.

However the station Airport Express a few classrooms is now always flashing orange and the error says "there is no DNS server address.

If I refresh the DHCP lease it will go green, but less than a minute he keeps flashing orange.

    What should I do?

The way this is supposed to work, it's that your main router obtains the DNS server address of an upstream (on the ISP network) server. The wireless access point or router (router in bridged mode) next level gets its the main router DNS addresses. All subsidiary wireless access points get their the next upstream router DNS server address. Your Mac gets these addresses from the router or wireless access point when it gets its IP address.

It is possible that you may need to turn off all routers, then feed their place in the order of the modem to the outside. But once that happens it is likely to have on them.

If no joy in doing that, don't use the Admin user on your main router to see what should be these addresses, write them and enter them manually when you need it.

  • Do I need to have a DNS server?

My Time Capsule airport has no DNS server. Is this a problem? Thank you.

Yes. You can't find Web sites without a DNS server. What is the time Capsule used as your network router? If this isn't the case, then there no need of DNS servers. If it is the main router, the default DNS server is the address of the network, such as 10.0.1.1 or 192.168.1.1 router. Or you can use any DNS available to the public such as OpenDNS - 208.67.220.220.

  • I use a VPN in AirPort Express. I've updated firmware for 7.7.7 and DNS assigned by my VPN does not work anymore. Upon entry, the icon 'internet' in utility Airpot turns brown, and the internet stops completely. Anyone have any idea?

Why my internet connection dies? I use a VPN to my internet at home. I put the DNS numbers supplied by the company VPN in my airPort extreme, which, in turn, provides wireless for home. It worked perfectly until I updated to firmware 7.7.7. Suddenly the green light next to the 'internet' in airport Utility icon went Brown, and it is therefore most all internet. I put numbers in DNS to my ISP, and internet provider is displayed again. All the other numbers in DNS, whether it's Google, OpenDNS or VPN to stop the dead from the internet. Anyone has an idea about this?

Airport base stations, are at best, a VPN-well past that device. It is a server or a VPN client. Upgrade to the latest firmware does not change this fact.

To create a VPN tunnel using the AirPort Express Terminal, your computer must be running a VPN client that connects to a VPN server somewhere on the Internet. What DNS servers you use should make no difference with VPN.

If the ISP-supplied DNS servers do not work, I would say that you contact your ISP to find out why they don't allow you to use them.

What we need to study is more why you lose Internet connectivity when changing the DNS servers of your ISP. Please check with them and to report back, then we can try to help.

  • Why am I messages DNS error since upgrading to El Capitan?

Since I upgraded my OS to El Capitan I was making (Yahoo Search page) DNS error pages when I use an Internet link to leave my email to another site. Its pretty boring and I have to use Safari where it happens. I like FireFox, but if I can't solve this problem I will be forced to stop using it. Help, please. Thank you, Michael.

You might have installed something more. On Mac, this problem is associated with some extensions Spigot, especially one named Searchme.

Open the page modules using either:

    • CMD + SHIFT + a
    • "3-bar" menu button (or tools) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then on the side right, remove or disable Searchme - and anything else that you don't need, like all the other Spigot/MyBrowserBar extensions. Keep in mind that all extensions are optional and none is included with Firefox when you get it first.

Often, a link will appear above at least an extension disabled to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links in the last step.

Is that what helps you regain control?

This could be the tip of an iceberg of malware. When you install free software, you often get the options grouped under silence. I don't know the best way to 'clean up' a Mac of these elements, but you may want to consider the issue.

  • We operate in a very restricted DNS environment and sites with a signed wildcard SSL download is very slow, so how turn off all controls and keep HTTPS?

If we use a self-signed certificate, we could add an exception. But we use a DigiCert Wildcard certificate. Our sites use a DNS very small with maybe a dozen of the URL for which a name points to an IP address. When Firefox is used to access our sites over HTTPS it is slow and often does not drink serving error messages on the security of the site. I think it's because he needs to verify the certificate or revocation. We do not have this problem using HTTP. I disabled 'OCSP request', but it did not help.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

So, I have a solution for this, but I consider ideal.

Our certificate provider utilizes both URLS resolve to a single IP address to validate certificates. Adding restricted these records to our DNS solves the problem. However, IPs addresses change from time to time and each site would have to be updated if that happened.

Ideally, it would be nice if Mozilla would add a white list or 'trust' option to Firefox.

    Thank you.

  • can not change the dns server, always comes back.

    10.10.5 Yosemite

My ISP has provided DNS servers are terrible and I still get messages "site is not reachable. I'd like to change the DNS from Google or Open DNS servers

In SYSTEM preferences > network > DNS tab I delete 2 default entries & entry "8.8.8.8" & "8.8.4.4" (google dns)
In the "areas of research" box, there are 2 entrances & I can't delete them.

I click OK & apply - when I go back to the DNS tab, it was the old DNS.

    What should do?

    May be a corrupt .plist.

Make a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

    Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user folder. With this Finder window as the windshield, select Finder/display/display options for presenting or order - J.  When the display options opens, check "show the library folder. This should make your visible user library folder in your user folder.  Select the library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist.  Move the .plist on your desktop.

Restart your computer, open the application and test. If it works fine, delete the plist for the office.

If the application is the same, return the .plist where you got it, crushing the latest.

  • Yahoo default, DNS Doubleclick, Yahoo new tab search

Having just switch to firefox on Mac as your primary browser as Google does not help things to force us to sign every time.

However, even the latest version of Firefox is a big left out. The default search keeps Yahoo food, regardless of how many times you remove it from preferences.

And new tab keeps so reset to Yahoo - little matter how many times change you by change of path browser.newtab.url.

Finally, I have no idea why random new tabs open with Doubleclick DNS - I checked my computer and there is no trace of Doubleclick anywhere. I even disabled ads on all of my Google accounts.

Can anyone give a solution either this portage just on?

Hi errwin, this problem is probably due to one of your addons (adware). If you like, either try to disable the unnecessary addons or Update firefox altogether...

  • Why is-36 of Firefox on Windows receiving connections from DNS servers? Option network.dns.get - ttl

Following update Firefox 36, my firewall was flooding asking me to allow external connections from the Internet to my browser. Looking at it more closely, Comodo Firewall indicates that external websites are trying to connect to Firefox, port 53 to an arbitrary port on my machine.

If I disable the option FF36 new network.dns.get - ttl, it stops. I can't find any documentation or help on this option.

Why Firefox do this? Is Comodo incorrect when he labels it as an external connection attempt? (It has normally been extremely good to differentiate the incoming and outgoing traffic). I guess that Firefox is trying to determine the TTL for DNS caching, but it is not make sense why DNS servers then try to connect to me.

I am reluctant to create a firewall rule to that arbitrary Internet connections on my machine are OK as long as their origin on port 53, tips on how to manage all that this new feature is firmly States would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi grammarye,

Yes, you're right in thinking that Firefox is trying to find the TTL value. This is new in Firefox 36 behavior and was presented as services frequently changing DNS records (such as Cloudflare) were not working properly for Firefox users.

Firefox makes asynchronous DNS searches - which means it will make a DNS query and then proceed to perform another task instead of waiting for an answer.

Your ISP DNS server puts in cache only TTL an area for a short time, so if it does not the current LIFE expectancy, he will interview with other DNS servers to find.

IANAE, but probably what is happening is:

    1. Firefox tries to find the DNS record for the domain that you want to connect to
    2. Your ISP DNS server does not have the current LIFE expectancy, then connects with other DNS servers to find
    3. During this time, Firefox lingers with something else
    4. DNS server, then reconnects to give you full DNS, including the TTL check
    5. Comodo sees the packets of the DNS server and panic

I completely agree that arbitrary ports of white list is a bad idea, but in this case, the behavior is completely harmless.

You can want to whitelist Firefox in your Comodo Firewall, or continue to let network.dns.get - disabled ttl.
