Do I have to activate the system image on the SSD?

Stephanie,

Is it possible to install Win'a 8.1 on external USB3 2 TB drive (WD My Passport) or USB3 thumb drive (64 GB or 128 GB 256Go) and boot from the external drive later?

On Dell XPS 15 laptop computer with touch screen, it is the model which has two readers. I intend to upgrade the two system has so 1 TB mSATA and 1 TB SSD.

It is possible to:

Install Win 1 TB mSATA 8.1

Do the Windows system image backup

1 TB SSD restore

Then be able to boot from the drive?

Given that the product key is embedded in the BIOS, 8.1 win on both drives is enabled?

You know other options to clone Windows discs?

Install Win 1 TB mSATA 8.1

Clone 1 TB to 1 TB SSD mSATA

I'll look at the following:

DD - Unix/linux command

ddrescue

Redo Backup

Clonezilla

I believe that all the options I listed above will require the creation of USB which is bootable with any of the listed software.  Realize this is out of scope of MS; thought I'd ask just in case.

Wish windows supplied with software of clone of road built, but other providers complain probably on antitrust, etc...

I confirmed not triggered because the license is built into the rom of the BIOS on the motherboard.

As long as systems are nearly identical and OS is the same, then readers (mSATA) can be interchanged between systems and activation is not required.

About the cloning of disks mSATA:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I use Acronis True Image 2014 which I used to clone drives and it worked several times on the following:
a. of the smallest disk to disk more
b. larger drive to the smaller drive
While I did with Acronis True Image 2014 disk image backups, I still need to confirm that I can restore successfully using the backup to disk image.
For the cloning now works and that's all, I care really.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I used also successfully "dd" command from Ubuntu 14.04 to:

a. clone drive to drive directly several times since I last summer on this thread.

b. make compressed backups of disk image

c. restored from a backup image

I've created a Live Ubuntu USB key that I can use to get started with any PC equipped with a USB port.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I also discovered ZTC sky Council mSATA case USB3
Get average 275 MB/s reading speed.
I've used this forum to successfully clone disks mSATA two ways:
a. mSATA attachment mSATA in laptop
b. mSATA in mSATA in attachment laptop
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A suite and was able to boot from speaker ZTC:

Had an mSATA 1 TB from another system 8.1 Win that has been correctly configured and personalized running. The system is exactly the same as another system I have except CPU is faster in 2nd system.

1 take 1 to 1 system mSATA.
2 put the 1 TB mSATA ZTC here.

3. connect pregnant ZTC 2nd system
a. Dell XPS 15 9530
b. port Super speed USB3

4. turn on the laptop
5 press F12

6. selected pregnant JMicron and system booted right up.

7 Win 8.1 very responsive touchscreen.
8. all other very sensitive operations.
9. no more worrying failure by car.

I'll keep clone in one of these envelopes, so I'll always be able to start immediately in the event of hardware failure of the drive.   I can also clone speaker for laptop and places itself in a few minutes, not in hours.

!!!!!!!!!!!!

No more waste of time.
No more loss of productivity.
No more lost files, data, or licenses.
No more lost system or application configurations.

No more distraction or frustration.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't explain the peace of mind, I now because my system is very suitable and configured and if the disc has been lost (misbehaves, failed or dead) I now have a bootable clone which was confirmed and ready to go. Simply plug pregnant, the system restarts, select start from the box and I am running immediately with 'EVERYTHING' intact. No hours or days later.

This is much better than making a backup image or a clone, and "ASSUMMING", they are good. So many people, even companies, saving its data, making images for backup to disk or even clone disks, but never check backups and clones due to the time it takes to do.

Another good thing about this package is that I don't have to open up the laptop and swap discs. Just clone for speaker, then to start immediately pregnant to confirm.

This place solves one of my backup issues.

Lets clone mSATA inside the laptop to mSATA in case ZTC, then start at the mSATA inside ZTC to validate the cloning has worked.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
200 MB/s to 300 MB/s reads... with this case - according to mSATA you buy
200 MB/s to 250 MB/s writes... with this case - according to mSATA you buy
My laptop has super speed USB3 ports, not legacy USB3 ports
    For some reason, my backup program is suddenly telling me that I don't have enough space to back up my files and create a system image backup. I deleted the image from my external hard drive system, and now it tells me I have 92 GB of free space on 149 concerts. However, the image of the system took about 104 concerts. It's not logical for me. In any should case, if I have my installation floppies, what I do, I really a system backup image?
    Backup system is mainly necessary for your personal files, you can recover/install Windows at any time that you have the installation diskettes. Therefore, only backup your personal files and the backup of Windows system files is not necessary.
  • Impossible to activate the correction lenses for images
    I try to get all the JPEGs, shot with a particular camera to have profile lens corrections applied to them. So with a jpeg that is selected in the development module I check on "Enable lens corrections" click setup and click "save new lens correction default profile." But it does not work. The next jpeg that I select is not activated lens corrections. Or it does not work if the setting to develop, I click on set default settings > update current settings. I think I have to activate the lenses to each image corrections. What I am doing wrong?
    Settings that you did for images should apply to others or the images differently than what I understand, you were doing:
    You say that you update to current settings >.
    This means that you update your lens correction parameters (that you developed earlier) with the parameters of the new image (which does not have lens applied correctioons).
    Instead, try the following - in the develop Module:
    Once you have the frame for a picture, select more images without deselecting the first image (ctrl + click on the images more).
    Your first image should have a light gray frame, other images, a slightly darker gray frame. This means that all images are selected, but your first image is active.
    At the bottom of the right pane, click . A dialog box appears that allows you to check the settings you want to apply to the other images.
    Check or anything that applies in the case of sub-options of lens correction.
    Click . Your lens correction should now be applied to other images - and also other parameters of development if you checked them.
  • How to activate the lock screen windows 8
    I have a new computer with windows 8 (non-professional version). When I started my computer last week the screen lock always came first. Now, I noticed (a week later) is not longer to come, but goes straight to the log in page. I went to my bar of charms and customization selected and noticed the screen lock options are grayed out and in red letters is says "this page has been disabled by group policy" I am the owner and the administrator and have never knowingly changed anything.
    I did some research and everyone says to change that I need to access the local Group Policy Editor by typing pgedit.msc in the run bar. When I do that I get nothing. More research says that this feature is available only in windows 8 Professional. I don't have the professional version then how this lock screen changed. More importantly, how I have re activate the lock screen?
  • Should I activate the TRIM?  Profile of said system that both my SSD have NO TRIM support...
    Hello!
    I'm new in the world of SSDS.  I recently bought two SSDS for use with mini OWC Thunderbay e:
    ADATA SP550 - my OS El Capitan
    Samsung 850 EVO - storage media
    When I go to each drive in System Profiler, each have a bug, fat 'no' next to the field in Support of TRIM.
    I know that Apple does not want to take charge of third party records, because they will not be held responsible for data loss or corruption.  That's why System Profiler telling me this?  Or are these two truly on readers list it naughty and I should definitely not turn Trim?
    I appreciate all of your comments!  Thank you!
    This isn't a bug. That's all just a report. Unless you are using an Apple brand SSD TRIM is not enabled. It's normal. You need a third-party utility to allow the TRIM: Trim Enabler. Or you can leave this option disabled. SSD of today can better actual work without TRIM. So you might as well not worry. See topping Talk. If the SSD using a controller strength sand THAT TRIM is not really necessary.
  • All of a sudden, I cannot perform a system restore, cannot not to activate the 'sleep', cannot conduct an audit of the disc.
    This all started in the last 2 weeks. Have cleaned the registry with CCleaner and Wise Registry cleaner. Have scanned my system with
    AVG free, free MalwareBytes, SuperAntispyware free, Spybot Search and Destroy, Windows Defender and the free analysis tool from Microsoft. Nothing untoward was found. My computer is almost 5 years old HP Pavilion tx 2000 32 bits. Also, after a few minutes, with each new page that I opened, my chrome browser always opens a new tab and my mouse, instead of scrolling up and down, it zoomed in my window larger or smaller size.
    Hi TedDyjas,
    Thanks for posting your question in the community of Microsoft Windows.
    From descriptions of the question, it seems that you are unable to run the system restore, you can not activate the 'sleep'.
    I imagine the inconvenience that you are experiencing. I'll help you fix the problem.
    To help you suggest several steps to solve the problem, I would appreciate if you could answer the following question:
    1. you receive an error code or message?
    2. have you made any recent hardware or exchange of software on your computer before the show?
    There may be third-party software conflict with the computer, and to solve it, perform the steps below to correct and solve the problem.
    Method 1:
    Step 1:
    You can try to start the computer in safe mode and check if the problem persists.
    Safe mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers.
    Startup programs do not work in safe mode, and only the basic drivers needed to start Windows are installed.
    Start your computer in safe mode:
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/start-your-computer-in-safe-mode
    If the problem does not persist in safe mode, then follow the next step.
    Step 2:
    You need to perform a clean boot to prevent any third party conflicting application from interfering with your computer.
    To put the computer in a clean boot state, you must follow the steps in the article mentioned below and check with the question.
    How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or Windows 7:
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929135
    Note: After troubleshooting, be sure to start your computer in normal mode by following these steps.
    a. click on start toreduce this includes this image, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box and press Enter.Collapse this includes this image
    If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, you must type the password or click continue.
    b. on the general tab, click the Normal startup option and then click OK.
    c. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click restart.
    Method 2:
    Scan your computer by using the Microsoft Safety Scanner by clicking Download now to check if there is no virus infected:
    http://www.microsoftsafetyscanner.com/
    Note: The data files that are infected must be cleaned only by removing the file completely, which means that there is a risk of data loss.
    I hope that the information above helps you.
    Your response is very important for us to ensure a proper resolution.
    In the future if you fall on any question relating to Windows, please do not hesitate to post your request here on Microsoft Community, we will be more than happy to help you.
  • Try to use the System Image to migrate from Windows 7 for SSD for boot upward
    Hello
    I have a new computer Windows 7 operting.   I'm trying to migrate my OS to SSD for faster boots, etc..
    I first tried various 3rd party applications such as EaseUS Partition Master and Reflect, all futile for unknown reasons.
    Now I'm having problems using the built-in tool "Create a System Image" Windows 7.
    The Image of the system seems to be created properly and is listed in the appropriate folder.   The next step is to use the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool to save the ISO file, then use this ISO on the DSS file.
    Unfortunately, despite all that I've read to the contrary, the file created by windows wasn't an ISO... it saved as a VHD file.   The download tool cannot copy VHD - only ISOs.
    Microsoft technical support suggested that I have post the question.   All the patches?
    Thanks in advance!
    What happens when you boot the system repair disc?  If necessary, you will need to enter your BIOS Setup utility and make your optical drive the first boot device.
    You have created the system image includes everything: the files of your operating system, your application to the program folder and your data.  Assuming that you have already used your system for awhile and so Windows, your installed programs and files total user more than 128 GB, the image does not fit on the SSD.
    If everything except your totals of less than 128 GB user files, then a possible scenario would be to backup all your files from user to some external medium data, confirm that the backup is valid, and then delete the files from the current hard drive.  Then make an image of system of what's left (which is now less than 128 GB) and restore that image on the SSD.  You create a new user profile and then copy your files from backup data on disk 1 to and link to your user profile in the user data (see tip below).
    Another alternative, especially if you have more than 128 GB used even without your data, is to do a clean Windows 7 on SSD install, reinstall all your application files, specifying as much as possible of the facilities is located on the 1 TB drive and your profile link to the data of the user on the 1 TB drive.
    This trick of sevenforums.com can help with the problem of having windows on the SSD and your data on the disk rotation:
    If you are simply wanting to save files HARD disk space in your user folders, you might consider this below in order to access the files in your library with the actually located files where you want to place. This way you won't have to worry about the potential problems that come with mobile user folder locations.
    To do a clean install of Windows 7 on your SSD, follow the instructions here to get a file ISO of Windows 7 to the same version of Windows 7 that is preinstalled on your computer: https://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/67-microsoft-windows-and-office-iso-download-tool burn the image on a DVD (Note: you can not just copy the files, use the built-in tool to burn dvd of Windows 7 or free third-party tool like ImgBurn).  Use the product key from the label on your computer (not the key retrieved by using a key finder program) to activate Windows.  See https://techingiteasy.wordpress.com/2012/04/13/how-to-activate-windows-7-oem-license-using-a-retail-disc/
    If this all sounds complicated - it is, and I haven't provided all the details - you can consider getting the help of a local independent computer repair shop (not a chain of stores).  Just make sure you get a real installation of Windows 7.
  • The create a System Image will save the FPGA code and the RT code?
    I have some cRIO systems which were broadcast in our manufacturing plant for some time. A slight problem has been discovered in the programming and created a workaround solution, but a fix should be implemented. Currently, I have no way to test my new code without loading on the cRIO and it works on the tool while the product is running. If there is a problem and I need to do some debugging, the tool cannot be down for an extended period. I would write a vi that will save an image of the cRIO so I can reload the software that is currently running and prevent a situation of prolonged downtime.
    My question is, when I did in the past with a product that has different tests, calibration and the final client software RT, it seems that the code FPGA not be saved (not a big deal at the time since the new FPGA code was compatible with different deployments RT). The new FPGA code won't be compatible with the old RT software, so now I'm worried. I would like to just check on it until I have all the boss breathing down my neck. If the service will not save the bitfile FPGA, is there anything else I can do for the tool to return to the previous running state while I solved problems that may exist with the new code review? The original code was lost by my predecessor. Otherwise, I would use just that.
    Hi Jeremy,.
    You are right, because the create a System Image does not record the bitfile with the image of the RT. Using the configuration system API, you will need to deploy the RT image and then the bitfile FPGA compiled later. To ensure that you can return to the previous version of the software running on your RIOs, you could simply save the current image and bitfile before deploying the new image and bitfile.
    However, the best way to proceed is to use replication Deployment Utility (RAD of OR). I have provided the link to the tutorial on the wheel, where you can download the utility. This exe will make images of the any of your RT targets and will also include the bitfiles with them. You can also deploy these images to several targets at once. In particular, you can read about the Bitfile (s) configure for FPGA Deployment Flash; the bitfile will be deployed at the start when stored in flash memory.
  • System Image backup has failed during the backup
    I have a 2 years old HP pavilion g series notebook.  I did a backup system image on dvd + r discs. It was almost over, when the drive #99, I got this message "the backup failed. The system cannot find the specified path (0 x 80070003)
    My computer is no longer under warranty and I'm $ 60 in the disks if they can't be used.  I need to know there is a way to save what I saved and restart the backup of the Image where it left off?
    Hi CherylLyme,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
    I would like to take a moment and thank you for using the forum, it's a great place to find answers.
    You have the best experience in the HP forum, I would like to draw your attention to the Guide of the Forums HP first time here? Learn how to publish and more.
    I understand that you did an image backup, and while he was almost done you received the error (0 x 80070003).  Here is a link to a response from Microsoft to help you. Windows backup error 0 x 80070003 (One answer per Vinod N)
    I'm not sure if you would be able to leave and get back on disc 99, because once you have repaired, it will be changed from when you first ran the backup.  The disc that you used only were not read, accessible writing, so you wouldn't be able to reuse them.  You can see that an external hard drive would be a more economical way to make your backups. The data must be in one place and easier to store.  If you decide to use a USB key, so do not more then the 32 GB and won't Windows 8 on it.
    You can probably buy an external drive for on the cost of the replacement of disks.  Here is a link to the HP Shopping external storage , but you can buy one at several places, Office Depot, Staples, Wal-Mart and computer shops are few.  I hope this helps.
    HP support has no answer!
    April 24, 2013
    Just thought I'd give you the answer to this old problem.
    Windows 7 (for earlier versions) work as described in the help of the screen except that the VSS mode
    must be turned on.  This allows Windows to actuall save parts of the operating system
    Although these parts are involved in the actual backup.
    Shame on the HP technical support for not knowing this.
    In addition, the original tech support suggestion was to call Microsoft.
    With a new HP PC you have no direct support from Microsoft (free).
    It took me a while to work with Paragon Backup (wonderful product) to realize that VSS
    must be enabled in the operating system for these virtual backup features to work.
