You right click on a doc or docx document and open it in any version of Pages, preview, TextEdit, or LibreOffice.

  • Downloading .docx files gets gibberish

I have Firefox installed 26.0 (although this has happened in previous versions). I lived all the previous questions on this problem, but none that I see. It goes to third-party access to my web site. I have an example of web page I have up that has the problem to http://flory.net/gabl/docx.htm.

When I click on the link on the page above (a 2007 office word .docx document), I get a page of gibberish as if it downloads the file as a text document. I went through all the steps I could find to support fix it to without success, including resetting all values by default, etc.. .doc works fine, but I can't find anything in the Options/Applications which will allow me to change/add info to handle .doc or .docx.

Unlike Internet Explorer, which looks at the beginning of the file itself to reach an opinion on its content-type, Firefox relies on the information provided by the web server. In this case, the server sends "text/plain" and Firefox that honors. The server must be updated to send a better content-type for DOCX files.

  • When opening .doc website link, FF adds .docx file extention & does not open in Word 2010, with incorrect file format error. Pls Help

I use Firefox v12 to open a hyperlink to a Web site that points to a door MS Word Document to download.

Then, we are asked to open the file with MS Word (default), which is our installed version of MS Word 2010.

Firefox then renames the file by adding a .docx file name for example filename.doc.docx. MS Word 2010 opens with the error "invalid file format", which is correct that Firefox has renamed.

Is there a fix or a workaround for this?

You can try to delete the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all the actions file.

  • PC will not open DOCX files

Hi I need to open DOCX files on a regular basis and my pc will not allow me, the msg I get when I try to open these files is shown below as an attachment, please take a look at this msg and I would like to know why and what I have to do, is this supposed file type to be like a pdf doc?

.docx is the further expansion of Word 2007/2010 document.
If you have Word 2003 or earlier, please go here:
    http://Office.Microsoft.com/en-us/Word-help/open-a-Word-2007-document-in-an-earlier-version-of-Word-HA010044473.aspx
and this will give you what you need to do.

    If doesn't help then:

In Windows Explorer, right-click a .docx file and select "open with...". »
In the dialog box that follows, select "Microsoft Office Word", or navigate to the location of Office program files and select WINWORD. EXE.
Make sure that you select the option "always use the selected program to open this type of file".

If help not the only thing I can advise is to try to restore the database by using Word Recovery Toolbox. http://www.oemailrecovery.com/word_recovery.html

  • Old problem with Spotlight and Word .docx files

There is an old problem with Spotlight not finding the Word .docx files.  You can find old discussions about it since 2008.  But despite this problem being old has never been resolved.

The essence of the issue is that Spotlight relies on a variety of software modules for the index files.  Projector selects the module suitable for each type of different file of the index.  These indexing modules all have the suffix of file .mdimporter.  Name of the module for indexing Microsoft office files is "Microsoft Office.mdimporter" and it can be found with a few other modules of .mdimporter in/library/Spotlight /.  The "Microsoft Office.mdimporter" module has rights author of Microsoft inside its packaging info so we know who wrote it.  But this module is included with all new Macs from Apple.  This is perhaps why this problem has never been corrected - the software is written by Microsoft, but delivered by Apple.

The symptoms of the problem are that Spotlight will find no content in some .docx files.  It is unclear why it fails on some .docx files, but not others.  This problem does not affect other Microsoft formats such as .doc, .xls, .xlsx, etc..

Because Apple wants to sell Macs to business, and companies make heavy use of MS Office in general, we could think that it would be a priority to fix.  But given that this problem is 7 years old and still not resolved I do not.

Any suggestions on possible alternatives would be welcome.

After further investigation, I discovered that the problem is not with "Microsoft Office.mdimporter" as I had thought.  If we run the mdimport(1)-d1 you can see what importer is used. It turns out that for the .docx files, the importer is called 'RichText.mdimporter' which has a copyright by Apple.  And if you use mdimport(1), the file will then be found by Spotlight.  If the issue is not the importer, but rather everything that is triggering the importer to run the .docx files updated.  Here's to blame Microsoft for this one...

As a workaround, I force indexing my files .docx with a Bash script, which is started by cron.  The script indexes all the .docx that have been modified in the last 24 hours and runs every hour via cron.  If someone is interested in the details just post here and I'll include the script in another post.

You should ask this of people that support the web site where you are trying to view the file.

PDF and DOCX files are completely different formats.  There is no such thing as a "PDF docx.  What do you mean by trying to "change back to 3 MB?  You cannot change the size of a file, unless you change what it contains. Describe in detail what you are trying to accomplish.
  • Another problem with a Microsoft Docx. file

I have a sandisk cruzer, which contains the installation of adobe CS5.5 Master Suite and a docx. [word document] file with the corresponding product code. A few days ago, the program has been deleted from my computer. I was able to copy the configuration of my USB on my computer with no problems. For some reason, I can't copy the docx. file. It loads as if it was copy it, but it found no visible copy. I also tried for the devil of it to remove the file again, it will act as deleting the file is started & completed, but the file is still there. This may be the cause? And, is there a program that can help?

It has nothing to do with what version of Windows you are using. He
has to do with which version of Word you are using (or if you)
    have installed the compatibility pack).

The .docx format is the default format used by Word 2007 and 2010.
Since you are using Word 2003, you can't natively read .docx
    files.

There are two possible solutions to your problem:

    1. ask your correspondent to refer the file to the old .doc format. He
can do this by choosing Save as, rather than save.

2 download and install the free "Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack
for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats"to
