Double click of the mouse on the desktop icon shortcuts no longer works.

Suddenly my mouse can move screen on the desktop page but double click on shortcut icons has no effect.  Must go to the bar at the bottom to open applications. Once in the application, the mouse works is great.  Problem is just Office page.  I have the edition of Windows Vista Edition Home Premium with a Norton security suite.  I restarted the system several times with no change in the problem.

I have been using InDesign for many years. Last week I suddenly discovered that I couldn't open a document by double-clicking on the desktop or wherever it was. Instead, now I have to find the document in the folder it's in, click on it once, and then click file in the bar at the top of the screen, go to open, then it will be open. Any ideas why this happened all of a sudden? In addition, in the bar on the top of a document, I can no longer change the Essentials to advanced or others. Seems to have everything that happened at the same time. Help appreciated please.

First of all: this has nothing to do with InDesign, it has to do with your OS, so second: what operating system? Windows or Mac because to solve this problem, we need to know which. It's your operating system which has lost the connection with your program and document files.

  • No action by clicking on the desktop icon.

Vista update downloaded 24 hours ago. Then select "shutdown" to close, message appeared 'install updates and shut down'. I've selected this option and went to bed.

At the next startup laptop morning seems to start ok, but when I clicked on one of the desktop icons, or "Start" nothing happened.

  • Windows 7 Home - not totally appearing & not opening when you click on the desktop icons.

All very well when I turn on computer, however after opening the first program by clicking on an icon on my desktop, the remaining icons still turning empty files - lose their individual designs - while retaining their titles - and can not be opened by clicking or double-clicking them.
Everything is fine when I opened the bt programs by selecting them from the start menu or the list of complete program.
Can anyone suggest a remedy please?

    Hello

Where there are changes on the computer prior to this question?

Perform the following methods and check:

Method 1: Run the fixit from following link and:

Difficulty of broken desktop shortcuts and common system maintenance tasks

    http://support.Microsoft.com/mats/system_maintenance_for_windows/en-us

    See also: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950505

Note: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click on the number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

How to back up and restore the registry in Windows 7

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/back-up-the-registry

Method 2: You can also scan your computer the Microsoft Security Scanner, which would help us to get rid of viruses, spyware and other malicious software.

The Microsoft Security Scanner is a downloadable security tool for free which allows analysis at the application and helps remove viruses, spyware and other malware. It works with your current antivirus software.

    http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner ends 10 days after being downloaded. To restart a scan with the latest definitions of anti-malware, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

Note: The data files that are infected must be cleaned only by removing the file completely, which means that there is a risk of data loss.

Let us know if it helps.

  • Why Firefox tells me "another program is using the file" 1 hour after the update of Firefox, when I click on the desktop icon?

It happened when I tried to update c. 16 to 17 as well. I had go it and download v. 18 and he told me that she had and he asked me to restart Firefox. I clicked on the "Restart Firefox" button. He closed Firefox 17. I waited an hour and no Firefox had begun. I clicked on the icon on my desktop for Firefox, and I got a window with "another program is using the file.

The last time that happened, I had to uninstall v. 16, use Opera 12.12 to download version 17 and then installed, to have to set my preferences just a little and then I could start v. 17.

Why update your program allows me to update, instead of downloading a new program?

I'm on Windows XP SP3 and a very fast motherboard.

Finally, I decided to check if my AVG antivirus or IOBit Malware Fighter software is interfering and I disabled them temporarily. I restarted and then turned off these programs and then opens Firefox. It was as usual, 17.0.1 version not updated. I went to help, on Firefox, click Find updates. Downloading updates, invited to restart Firefox, and after closing Firefox, I got the window that says that he was installing the updates, for the first time for an attempt to update to version 17 or 18. He installed the updates and restarted in fact without any problems.

I was about to turn off all of my Add-ons for the next test. I never had to disable my AVG or IOBit before and they are the latest versions, too. AVG is the same version that allowed the update to v. 16 before. If something is different both Firefox 17 and 18, that it will not allow updates with AVG in force (or possibly IOBit Malware Fighter).

  • Impossible to click on the desktop icons

I recently problems with windows 7 64 bit. I have run a virus check using an updated to AVG 9 but it show nothing. If anyone has had this problem or know another solution to reboot the pc? I tried to repeat things to work out what is the cause or when it begins but as the yet not sure.

Hi thanks for the reply. I think I found the problem now someone in a surgested chat channel using a program called Malwarebytes to scan the pc and he picked up a virus registory of embezzlement:

    Infected registry data items:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoActiveDesktopChanges (Hijack.DisplayProperties)-> Bad: (1) Good: (0)-> quarantined and deleted successfully.

I don't know how it has infected the computer, but at least I can wipe again if I get it again. I hope this is help to anyone else having the same problem to.

  • All the desktop icons are running MS Works

Most of the shortcuts on my desktop & the toolbar has changed - the no longer show the correct icon & when I double click on a window appears informing me that MS Works is changing the link

Thus, for example, I click on the shortcut to IE and performs work! I deleted the shortcuts created and new, but the same thing happens.
If I look at the properties, the info is OK with links pointing to the location correct disc & if I run the files directly from the disk they work all OK
This is the case for non MS apps (for example Firefox) as well as the applications of MS
Only my account every day had been affected. I have an account Admin emergent & when I connect to which its fine so it seems to be the user or a specific profile

As a first step, try a system restore, for a period prior to the occurrence of the problem

  • HP Pavilion Elite HPE - 337c: right click on the taskbar for programs no longer works.

    1. product name and number: HP Pavilion Elite HPE - 337C

    2. operating system: Microsoft Windows 7 Edition Home Premium (64-bit); Service Pack 1; Build number 7601; Version of DirectX 11.

    3. error message: None; wish that it is.

    4. all changes made to your system until the problem occurred: Geez, there was so much.

Problem: It used to not be that way.  Whenever I right click on a program open on the taskbar, and move the mouse to the added elements or recent-objects, disappears from the list.  The mouse does not work, but I can still use the cursor up/down arrows to select the item, press ENTER, and it works.  But there may be other problems related to the use of the mouse; We'll save those for later.

    Thank you

    Hank

There is the possibility that there is a third-party shell extension that is the cause of the problem. You can analyze that yourself with a free utility called ShellExView. This may take some trial and error, deactivation and activation on your part.

Only disable a single extension, both for troubleshooting, then turn it back on. If too many extensions at the same time, more specifically shell extensions Microsoft is off, then you might get a operating system unbootable.

  • Make a right click on the desktop icon generates the error

Besides, right-clicking on any icon in Windows Explorer, open the same window "Microsoft... has encountered a problem and needs to close." Looks like the registry, or something, is corrupt.

ShellExView has been amazing! It took less than 5 minutes to locate and correct the problem. I had on package extensions (40) - found the culpret in the second group of (10). Turns out I've been using Powerdesk (a Dead Ringer for Windows Explorer for maybe 10 years). Disabling the Extension "Powerdesk ZIP" solved the problem. Windows Explorer and PowerDesk (which wasn't too) will work perfectly.

I know not what affects the tell-abling "Powerdesk ZIP Extension" will have, but I can try to install the software - it is possibly corrupt.

    Thank you very much.
