DS3300 Design - RAID and logical drive configuration

Hello

I'm setting up a dual controller DS3300 with VMWare ESX 3.5 hosts x 2 connection using the iSCSI Software initiator.  I have a question about setting up the optimal training.  What I read I should set up several logical drives, and then assign each player owner of another favorite controller logic.  I have 12 300 GB drives, so I thought I would create a RAID5 11 with 1 spare drive Bay.  I would create logical units of 4 x size equal and each of the 4 controllers will then assign that traffic is spread in the controllers for optimal performance.

A1 and B2 to go to a different physical switch (vlan) and B1, A2 go to another.  Each ESX Server has 2 vswitches each with a single network adapter with each going to a different physical switch.

Can anyone tell if the RAID and the design logical drive is the best way to go for a flow optimal iSCSI?  I'm not asking about this type of raid to use - I don't need a raid 1/0 or a mixture of performance - I'm afraid only for best performance of iSCSI for RAID5.  Can I create several RAID5 arrays and logical drives or simply several logical drives?

Thank you

Ian

If you have 2 controllers in your storage space then the best config (with 12 disks) must be set up 2 bays of R5 - each of them has its owner controller.

Included logical readers will have the same owner under the parent array controller. Logical readers could be about 300-500 GB on the size. A big R5 isn't the best practice because of the likelihood of the failure of the double disc (for example during the time of reconstruction). A spare part is a must here.

On Esx site I would keep everything simple - 2 network cards, a vmkernel iscsi port. More complexity you will get no more flow (with storage).

Just for notice - DS3000 series gives quite more random ios on R10 in comparison to the R5.

I am about to install ESX on a HP DL380 4i. I have 6 300 GB hard drives. I won't attach to any SAN.

I'm trying to figure out how to tap my hard drives to maximize space with fault tolerance. I try to avoid the loss of 2 300 GB drives for my install ESX (RAID 0) and the rest of the disks for storage.

I thought about using a USB device, but this system will be used by other people, so I wanted something more permanent and also feared that the device USB would be lost so a little do not want to engage in this way.

Looking for ideas on how I have to configure my hard drives.

    Why lose readers at all?

    6 x 300 GB in a RAID5 configuration = 1500GO.

Install ESXi, or install it on a USB key.

And certainly do not use RAID 0.

  • HP Smart Array P410i - logical drive not visible in 'add a storage '.

I'm running a server small laboratory with the following configuration:

    DL 360 g7

Storage controller "Smart Array P410i" with 512 MB BBWC

    6 x SAS 600 GB of disk

ESXi hypervisor 4.1 - U1 (currently configured directly from the customer)

    Problem:

    1. If I configure the Raid 10 logical unit, everything works fine. A datatore about 1.7 TB can be used.

    2. If I have configure Raid 5 or Raid 0 or Raid 50 then I see the drive in the config and start-up (1 logical drive configured...) tool, but in the storage option Add, there is no disk/lun to select.

I refreshed everything etc, but only if I use the option usable raid 10 storage "appears.

    Any advice/help welcome.

Make sure your logical drive is less than 2 TB. VMFS limitation is specifically 2 TB-512bytes.

  • HP ML350 G6 is only able to see 1 Logical Drive

Server uses the (no BBWC) P410i controller.

Running on a RAID 5 (4x300gb readers) however the LUNS just fall below 10% of the amount of available space. We've added since a RAID 1 (2 x 600 GB disks) but when you try to add the storage to the ESXi host do not.

Health status shows the new logical drive (2nd), but I think it's just because it pulls the information directly from the BIOS.

BIOS to turn the latest firmware (D22, 2011-05-05), as is the RAID controller (5.12).

Cases have been raised with HP and VMware, but both keep pointing the finger each other and we could not get a resolution.

I hope that someone will have some other ideas about how we can get the host see the storage.

I remember that I had a problem once with a P400 when I was creating a second RAID, defined by using ORCA. He worked with the help of the removal of the ACU and recreate seta RAID and logical volumes.

What you could do to solve the problems is to run a new scan, and then locate the vmkernel errors log.

  • Different between primary and logical partition?

Referring to the next video, after a free space for the new partition, I create partition, which show the logical drive (blue color), but the other partitions are of primary partitions (blue color), I would like to know it possible to create a main drive instead of logical drive partition, and what difference is between the primary and logical partitions.

There is an option to delete a logical partition (drive D :), after you remove it, can he create a new primary partition?) Through this process, it will cause no problem on the primary partition (drive c :))?

Is there an advantage to have a logical partition (drive D :)?

In the future, if I need more space in C: drive, it will be easier to extend the primary partition (drive c :)) with logical partition (drive D :)?

If a logical partition (drive D :) convert primary partition, it will be easier to extend the primary partition (drive c :)) with primary partition (drive D :)?)

  • Can I shrink a logical drive and not the extended partition to a bare metal restore to a smaller drive?

The current configuration is a Dell T310 with a S300 controller, with all locations 4 hot filled with SAS drives.  The operating system is SBS 2008 (2008 Server/Vista), I intend to change the controller of S300 (software) controller, a controller (hardware) H700.  My concern is that the H700 brings readers a little smaller in size.

The typical arrangement of Dell's diagnosis, followed by a recovery partition partition (E :), followed by the system partition (C :), followed by a partition with a logical volume (d).  If I use Diskpart to shrink the D: 'partition', he let me with free space, not allocated.  Thus, it effectively reduces the logical drive, and the extended partition stays the same size as it was, with no way to reduce it.

The question is, if I shrink the logical D: drive and not the extended partition and then get backups of the system, I'll be able to a bare metal restore on the smallest virtual disk of the H700?

    That's what I did:
    -Released the S300 controller and 4, 450 GB, 15 000 rpm Cheetah RAID-5
-Replace the controller H700 and 2, 2 TB 7200 RPM in RAID-1 Constellations

    Results:
-Eliminates the possibility of falling on a disk space issue when restoring
-Increased the amount of available disk space.
M ' left with 2 free hard drive for future expansion bays.

  • RAID and Dell PowerEdge T110 ESXi 5.0 configuration

I just do a fresh install of ESXi 5.0 on a Dell server, which has 2 x 250 GB HDDs in RAID 1 configuration. However, in the management of ESXi I am presented with 2 drive 250 GB each, which should be visible as a single drive. This is something that Windows 2008, on bare metal, took care, and what should I do with ESXi to fix this? I just need to reboot the server and enter the RAID configuration? I need to be careful because I don't want to lose any existing data. Thank you.

    Welcome to the community,

ESXi supports only RAID controllers that are transparently logical drives to the operating system. In your case, it seems that you are using a RAID controller for software that requires additional drivers for the RAID of the operating system, which are not available for ESXi.

  • S100, driver RAID and Win XP

I just bought a S100. According to the company policy, I removed the pre-configured OS and added our own generation based on a disk from an earlier toshiba machine image. This procedure is usually simple and usually only requires that twist slightly to get the right drivers installed. With the S100 RAID drivers cause me a problem. Win XP does not see the disk hard by default in this machine and if you press F6 and provide the drivers from the floppy drive. If you do this, the drive is recognized and start installing XP, but a message will appear asking you for the Toshiba RAID driver a second time. For this second attempt XP does not seem to be able to read the disk A:\ more and so the installation can not continue. Has anyone seen this problem before, and if so, did you manage to solve it?

    Best regards, J.

    Hello John

The Toshiba RAID driver must be added during the installation, when prompt to 'press F6 if you need to install a third-party RAID or SCSI driver.
To do this, download the Toshiba RAID driver from the Toshiba web page driver download and extract the zip to a disk file. Connect the floppy drive to your computer before starting the installation.
The Setup program continues until you are asked if you want to "S = specify additional device. Press' and specify the driver Toshiba Raid for XP or 2000 as required. Press 'Enter' to continue the installation.

When you use Windows Setup to partition or format the HARD drive, the RAID driver is deleted in the process. This causes the shot the next time that the machine start-up. To avoid this, do all the partitioning and formatting before you run the manual installation of Windows.

However, this behavior does not appear when you install Winxp Service Pack 2 integrated. It seems that the SP includes a hardware support. Always provide the RAID driver unpacked on the diskette, however.

    Good bye

    Hi FAH300,

If you are not able to format the drive, there may be a hardware problem.

I suggest formatting the disk using the instructions linked by wb2001.

  • Break the RAID and the displacement of the OS to a new hard drive

    Hello

I have a MSI GT683r laptop that is configured with two 500 GB Hdd that are configured in RAID 0. I wanted to disable Raid so I could separate my windows OS of my alternative OS on two different hard drives. Im a student, so I have lots of important programs and documents on my PC right now and I was wondering how can I mirror/clone/transfer my exisitng OS (as part of the RAID 0 stripe) and move it to a single hard drive. There are some caveats to this and how to go to that topic.
Thank you very much in advance

RAID 0 distributes all your files on both drives. Break the RAID and you have data or programs, not even a bootable OS. So you have to backup your data before breaking the RAID.

To preserve your current operating system and transfer it to one of your readers courses will require using a 3rd hard drive to clone the current operating system from before the breakup of the RAID, so that it can then be cloned to one of the original disks.

It will not be possible if you store more data on RAID 0, that can be accommodated on a single disc. With your drives, if your current RAID 0 (maximum 1 to) has more than 500 GB stored, this cannot settle on one of your hard drives of 500 GB.

  • Dell PowerEdge 2900 RAID and drive down

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2900 server. The primary transmission table has three drives and RAID 5. The system came this way, and it has been humming for quite a long time. Recently, one of the disks has deteriorated and the light on the drive flashes green and light amber. The light amber, I figured, it means that there is a problem with the drive and must be replaced. Then, I found a replacement on Amazon.com drive and installed (the drive is hot, but my cold started to be sure). I installed the drive, but keeps flashing green and amber light.

I didn't know that I shouldn't have to replace the drive in this way, so I will now try to figure out what to do next. I hoped to reallocate the foreign disk so that I can use it, but my server always shows the reader, not having even if the new replacement drive is in the slot, now.

    I'm running PERC 5 / I integrated utility of Configuration Bios 1.04 - 019 a

I started the server and you press CTRL-R. I've highlighted the controller and press the F2 key, what is operations. When the operations window opens, there are three menu items:

    Create new VD
    Zero Config reset
    Foreign config

The only thing that I am allowed to do in this menu is to reset the configuration. I can't move my cursor upwards or downwards for one of the other choice of two menu.

Scroll when the virtual disk and he discovers, it still shows the first two discs and a lack.

When I press CTRL + N to display the next screen, I see a player listed as failed.

How can I rebuild my RAID with this new drive? If I can't do it, what is the best way to remove the RAID and start over? If I delete the RAID and do it again (and if my replacement drive is indeed well), how can I make sure that my server not to see it, not having so that I can start using it?

Alternating flashing green/orange means that the disc is in a status of predictive failure. What OS is running system? If you hotswap drive next failure they may possibly other issues table because the drive was online and participating in the table with errors on the disk. The adequate alternative method is to use our software Openmanage Server Administrator to run a consistency check on the table and then the drive offline. Once this has been done you can then swap the drive. It seems that in your case, that the new drive had bad data copied on it and it made a predictive failure as well. We want to do is run our hard drive diagnostics and test drives in the system.
