Dynamic disks across multiple LUNS

It is advisable to extend a drive Windows across multiple LUNS? What would be the impact on snapshots?

What product you use VMware?

Are automatically using RDM as you talk covering NTFS LUN partitions? This is not the case if you use virtual disks on VMFS volumes.

Hi, I'm under ESXi 4 Update 2 and have a file server with hard on multiple LUNS, I need to migrate the drives out of the old array to storage and from our new.  I want to do online, if anyone knows how to do a vmotion storage disks residing on different LUNS that need to stay on different LUNS?  Thanks a bunch,

using the advanced option when "change you data store" will allow you to separate the files to disc, or basic moves all disk files associated with the guest in question to the same LUN.

  • Photos of virtual machines with multiple disks on different LUNS - Question

I have some questions on how to manage the snapshots of virtual machines with multiple disks on different LUNS.  First of all, the LUNS are VMFS.  We are just starting to add virtual machines with dedicated for data storage format VMFS LUNS.  I don't think an extra space must be made for snapshots, as well as at least 100 GB LUN is required to store the data, and then say, add about 25 to 50% of this amount?  Set the 100 GB vmdk file but have the GB from 25 to 50 additional disk space for snapshots, if necessary (rather than just to get a unit number logic needed 100 GB of data and devote all of the 100 GB to the vmdk file).  In addition, if a virtual machine has several files vmdk on different LUNS, which will be a problem to take a snapshot, and is it possible to do just a snapshot of a disk of a virtual computer (as the volume of the BONE)?

    Thanks for any help.

Snapshot files are created in the home folder of the VM by default for all virtual disks, no matter on what data store they are. You must make sure you have enough free disk space on the data store for snapshots.

If you want to exclude a virtual disks of taking snapshots, you can set it to 'Independent' - 'Persistent' machine virtual settings to the HARD drive.

  • Try to reduce a basic volume of Windows 7 on disk 0 using the new Wizard of Simple Volume, I get a warning about the conversion to a dynamic disk.

Just bought a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Edition and decided to shrink the C: drive and create a D: drive.  Everything seems to go correctly, and I get to the 'End of Volume Wizard' screen without problem.  All the choices seem to be OK but when I click OK I get a warning that says "the operation you selected will convert selected basic disks and dynamic disks...". "I want to do this?  If I do, what are the consequences?  If I don't want to convert a dynamic disk how create a D: drive which remains a basic disk?

    Hi Ken Dunn,

Welcome to Windows 7 Community Forums

Basic disks and dynamic disks are of two types of hard disk configurations in Windows. Most personal computers are configured as basic disks, which are the simplest to manage. Advanced users and it professionals can make use of dynamic disks, which use multiple hard drives in a computer to manage data, usually to improve performance or reliability.

For more information, see the link below:

What are the basic disks and dynamic? :

create and format a hard disk partition:

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-SG/Windows-Vista/create-and-format-a-hard-disk-partition

I hopeYou have followed all the steps to shrink a partition correctly but, you encounter a problem, carry out the task. You can go ahead and try the following steps to reduce a volume.

    1. open the Control Panel (all items view)and click the Administrative Tools icon. then close the Control Panel window.

2 in administrative tools, click computer management , and then close the Administrative Tools window.

3 in the left pane under storage, click disk management.

4 in the center pane, right-click the partition that you want to shrink and click on Decrease of Volume.

5 type in how many MB (1 GB = 1024 MB) of space to show available reduction you want to reduce the partition or volume by to use for the new unallocated space, and then click the minimize button.

6 the partition selected (step 4) has now shrunk to create a new empty unallocated space. You can use this new space unallocated to create a new partition with.

7 close the computer management window.

    To create a new partition:

    1. you must first to reduce a partition or a volume create an unallocated partition to use to create the new partition or volume with.

    2. open the Control Panel (all items view)and click the Administrative Tools icon. then close the Control Panel window.

3 in administrative tools, click computer management , and then close the Administrative Tools window.

4 in the left pane under storage, click disk management.

5 in the center pane, right-click on the volume or unallocated partition empty and click on New Simple Volume. (See screenshot above)

6 click on the Next button

7 type in how many MB (1 GB = 1024 MB) you want to use from the unallocated partition to create the new partition, and then click the Next button. (See screenshot below)

NOTE: If you want to use all of the unallocated partition to create the new partition, and then enter all the maximum specified for the partition unallocated disk space. If you use any of the maximum disk space, you can use the left in the unallocted partition space to create another partition with.

Select an available drive letter you want to assign to the new partition in the computer, and then click the Next button.

9 enter a volume label name that you want for the new partition, check the perform a quick format , and click on the Next button

    Click on the Finish button

11 the new partition or volume has been created with the space in partition assigned unallocted (step 7).

12 close the computer management window

Check if you perform the same steps as above and us post if you have any other questions.

Hope the above information is helpful.

    Thanks and greetings

  • Move ROW with dynamic disk to another virtual machine

    Hello

I'm in a situation where I have to leave my RDM Win2003 VM to win2008, but the complexity and multiple physical RDMs here make only dynamic partition (RDM1 1.5 TB, RDM2 1.5 TB, is drive G RDM3 1 TB 4 TB),

Now my question is if I can move this partition of G (which includes 3 disks RDM) again an another VM (win2008)

    Thanks, SD

    Hello

This does not resemble a specific question VMware.  On the contrary, seems like a question of Microsoft Windows.  Just make sure the hosts on which the virtual machine of 2008 runs can see the same ROW and follow this procedure to remove dynamic disks of the virtual machine of 2003 and add them to the virtual machine of 2008.

    Move disks to another computer

    All the best,

    Mike

  • convert dynamic disk to basic

I have a split/dynamic volume of 2.24 TB on a file server.  I use Veeam to create replicas per day so I work in a lab environment.  The other day, I discovered that I am not at the file level restores using Veeam when using dynamic volumes.  To remedy this, I want to do a combination of the following: shrink, break the span and convert to basic.  I'll start playing now w / the reply, but I am curious to know if anyone has come across this before and if they managed to preserve the existing data as well as the permissions file/part too (pious).

There are three ways to complete this work for you.  Links: 1 convert a dynamic disk to basic disk via the removal of all volumes from the dynamic disk. 2 convert a dynamic disk to basic disk using the Partition recovery software. 3 convert a dynamic disk to basic with NO LOSS OF DATA using the dynamic disk converter Aomei

    Cheers, your Udin

  • Bootcamp converted to dynamic disk, now no windows without OS Macbook!

    Hello

I converted accidentally Bootcamp (Windows 7 64 bit) the dynamic disk while I was inside Windows.

Now, after the start of the only option I get is 'Windows', but 'Macbook' and 'Value' disappeared!

When I choose Windows, it won't start. Windows Recovery stands up and says can not solve the problem.

That's happened? What should I do now?

    I'm finished * off

    Thank you

I forgot to add that no combination of keys doesn't work.

  • HP recovery partition and dynamic disk!

Just got my new laptop and added a partition of my HP pavilion dv7 WIN 7 64 bit and noticed disc was dynamic. I don't know if it changed the dynamics or as it was delivered. I'll always be able to use the recovery on the dynamic disk partition? And if I create recovery discs, they will work on the dynamic disk or will it convert back to base?

It can work with Easus software, but I'm sure that you need to remove this extra partition before conversion back is possible.

If you need an extra partition, look HERE page on the use of the recovery partition or delete to free up hard disk to create a new partition without conversion by burning a resumption of course the value of dynamic_after.

  • How to convert a dynamic disk to a basic?

How to convert a dynamic disk to a basic? I can't really deleat the C and readers of the system, and if so, how?

    Hi Brad,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for the query display.

According to the description, it seems that you want to convert a dynamic disk to Basic.

However, we need more information about the issue to help you better.

Please help me to answer these questions.

1 how many partitions are on the hard drive?

2 is installed Windows on drive C?

    3. you have any operating system installed on the hard drive?

To convert the dynamic disk to basic, here are some steps that you can try.

You can try to convert the dynamic disk drive basis (except your drive C :) using the Diskpart.exe in the command line. By following these steps, you can avoid reinstalling Windows XP. But if you want all the hard disk as a single partition, then proceed as follows.

Note: Before formatting the hard drive or perform the steps, back up your data to an external storage device.

Steps to convert dynamic disk to basic

    a. press Windows key + r on the keyboard and in the immediate window, type cmd.exe

    b. in the command prompt and type D iskpart .

    c. at the Diskpart prompt, type list disk . Note the number of the disk you want to convert to dynamic.

    d. at the Diskpart prompt, type select disk . (select the dynamic disk you want to convert.)

    e. at the Diskpart prompt, type clean to remove all volumes on the disk.

    (f) then, at the Diskpart prompt, type: convert base to begin to restore the disk to basic training.

Respond us if you have any queries with hard drive problems and we will be happy to help you.

  • Y we can convert dynamic disk to basic again after having already converted to dynamic?

We all know that the default value of the hard drive is (Basic) and some timed Let's convert in cuz our uses (dynamic), my question is how can we convert in new Basic or it's impossible?

    Thank you

It could be the case that you cannot remove the active OS partition / volume.  If this is the case, try to create a "Hirens Boot CD" and the start of this CD.  In the first start screen, choose "Mini XP.  Once it starts, follow the instructions in the following article:

"To change a dynamic disk to basic disk back.

To create a Hirens Boot CD, download the ".zip" file extract in a folder and double-click the ".cmd" file within the archive extracted.

You will need to re - install windows after you complete these steps.

  • What is a dynamic disk

I installed an extra internal hard drive. I've been asek the question I want to make this dynamic or basic disk. someone tell me what is a dynamic disk.

  • Re-installed XP Pro. Now can not access data dynamic disk on the HD 2

Hey all. Good here we will...

My system has TWO SATA drives. A year ago I converted both Dyamic discs thinking I could use them in a RAID, but decided to do it. So, since that time I am using OS + critical data Disk1 and Disk2 as a backup (compressed image of Disk1).

My question is now, I have re-installed XP Pro on disk 1 and my computer does not allow me to see the data in Disk2. XP Pro detects disc 2 as "base" and asks me to format it. However, my BART PE bootdisk shows 2 disk as dynamic and he can't read.

This is where I am. I'm trying to understand how to read data from disk 2. Whether some use of software 3rd party or a way to get XP Pro to see the data.

Check the knowledge base on best practices with dynamic disks.
    http://support.Microsoft.com/search/?adv=1
    For example.
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/329707

"Dynamic disks use a private disk region to maintain a logical disk manager (LDM) database, which contains the types of volumes, offsets, memberships and the drive letters of each volume. The LDM database is also replicated, so that each dynamic disk knows about every other dynamic disk configuration. This feature makes dynamic disks more reliable and recoverable than basic disks. »

You suggest that your second drive can still have a copy of his information LDM. In other words, as long as you did not "commit a sin" as defined in this article.

See 'import records' here and see if 'Foreign' is displayed for the drive in disk management.
Disk management is where you want to look for info on the disc.

  • Non-destructive how to convert dynamic disks to basic disks

I instaled vista today (wd70gbwd disk0) but my (hd500g wd disk 1 backup) is offline in the management of the computer, only that I have is to transfer to the BASE. • Error "the dynamic disks are not supported by this operating system." what configuration Raid 0 (striped) readers.

I have my operating system installed on a single disc, and I bought two additional discs I want to implement in a Raid 0 configuration. I'm going to administrative tools > computer management > disk management > right-click on a single disc and select the new striped volume > add the second drive and fill the dialog box until I get to the part where the formatting is supposed to start. Then I am stopped by an error that says "the dynamic disks are not supported on this operating system."

Who says that hard drives, I bought are not compatible with vista interlacing or it says that vista can not the striped disks. What is the problem?

You need to configure raid 0 before installation of win, you cannot "convert" s simple drive to the part of a matrix of blocks.

In general this is not a good idea to use software raid, too a overload the CPU. If you want to raid, invest in a dedicated hardware raid card, which for a decent cost probably more than your motherboard
