2 GB of RAM is the absolute minimum to install El Capitan. If you want to run all programs then you need to increase the amount of RAM.

  • very slow Powerbook fine, iMacs

My family uses 2 iMacs (1 2013, 1 earlier) and an Apple Powerbook at home. 2 iMac is incredibly slow, but the speed of the Powerbook is fine. IMacs both have a lot of unused storage and memory and I completely restored two iMacs and deleted unnecessary files, but they are very slow. I have everything back up on Dropbox and wonder now if the slowness is something to do with the combination of the signal at high speed and by using several connections of Dropbox in the House.  We have a Virgin Media Hub Super 2ac with advertised broadband router of up to 150 Mbps. I made a speed control using www.speedtest.com and the download speed is 105.81 Mbps and download speed is 9.70 Mbps. Any ideas anyone?

  • Early 2009 iMac running hot. Hard drive problem?

    Hello world

    I have an early 2009 24 "iMac. (iMac9, 1, 2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo). I am currently using OS X 10.11.4.

This problem started, summer 2014. My iMac has been in storage a year since March 2015. Here's the problem, when it started it was summer and very hot. I didn't have air conditioning. I got this iMac from April 2011. Bought from Mac of all trades. Obviously, they heat up on top, or at least this one does. The hard drive is a Western Digital WDC WD1001FALS-40K1B0, 1 TB drive.

At the point where I was running DiskWarrior, who reported that my hard drive was running too hot. The reader otherwise verified fine and so I downloaded Fans of Mac control, looked up what the operating temperature should be for this hard drive and set it to increase the fan speed, if necessary. Now 5182 rpm, it turns the hard drive cooling fan, and he reports 127,4 ° F. The room temperature is 82.4 °.

Now, let's move forward to this last week. I've had my Mac for storage, he had been in the garage of a friend of year-round, is his box. From the beginning it upward, it froze soon after establishing the office. I started on the recovery partition, and DiskUtility found that it could not solve problems. So I started from the eDrive TechTool Pro partition and run DiskWarrior. That was fine until the computer froze again. To reboot the partition e could not climb. The recovery partition would enter to Midway through the boot process and then hang. It's the same problem I was trying to start normally.

So after a long day of trying everything (I don't have a disc of starting of any kind, that I still have stuff in storage), the Mac finally started in the recovery partition. I ended up having to reformat the hard drive, make a new installation of 10.11 and restoration of my Time Machine backup.

After another day of tweaking, everything worked fine. Except the drive is always hot.

Today, it's back to freezing on me. I started the eDrive and TechTool Pro check sensors and generate a SMART report. The SMART report verified the reader, but watch it turns slightly on the warm side. And that was with the fans to run fast.

Then, after all that, I'll try to get an opinion on the health of the hard drive. If I put the fans for normal speed, now it is 2638 rpm and increase, and the reader is 138.2 ° F. This seems too hot for me. You can't touch the top of the computer for a long time. It is too hot.

  • What SSD for early 2009 imac?

    Hello

I have a question to choose the good ssd for my imac 7y/o (9.1) since early 2009.

I found a few good SSD as the samsung 840 BX100 or critical, but I've also read several times that a ssd sata3 will use sata1 when installed on a sata2.

And that is why it is better to install a sata2 ssd.

IS that still the case today? Given that these messages are coming from 2013.

Or is that I can put in an ssd sata3 and it will run on sata2?

    Kind regards

    Ivo

SATA III drives that use the Sandforce controller will come back to SATA I speed if installed on a computer that uses the Nvidia MCP79 SATA controller. Samsung does not Sandforce. My Macbook in early 2009 with a Samsung 840 (pre Evo, not Pro) negotiates the SSD SATA II speed, connected to the MCP79.  OWC also still sells SATA II disks, I have one in my late 2009 iMac. I chose this drive, even if it was more expensive because OWC insisted that my model should have the Nvidia controller but in reality it has controller Intel 5 series. I didn't take my iMac except more than once.

    Confused? Yes I know...

  • Very slow performance on iMac, please help

I installed VMware Fusion on my iMac and my normal iMac works perfectly. However, the VMware runs MUCH MORE slow. Here are the specs on my computer:

    2.7 GHz i5

    8 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3

I thought it might be a ram problem, even if on the side of the virtual machine from things I have only a single internet window open, and is to show that I'm allocate 2 GB of ram.

What you think may cause these slow speeds and what can I do about it?

    Thank you!

    Hello

As you mention that you have an imac, please take a look at this answer of DariusD here:

  • Try to update too last El capitan, very slow

    Hello

This is my first post here.

    So, this happened:

I got El Capitan installed, I was told to update to the latest (don't remember version). I started this update and it is painfully slow. He said like 25 min at first, but a few hours later, he said 18 minutes or so. I left it overnight and I said 8 minutes the next morning. Later that day, he said another 8 minutes. As I needed the computer I force it out. When he then started it liquid right down after typing the password. OK, so here's what I tried:

I booted into recovery mode and ran this thing of first aid. Dampening additive nothing wrong.

I then booted into single user mode and run fsck - fy. This is a mistake, fixed it. Ended with "seems to be ok." But the same thing happened, he shutted down during startup, after putting the connection password.

I also tried to do a clean install, but when I came back the mac was turned off and when I booted up it freezes at the progress bar.

I have concluded that it should be the hard drive, which must have been defective. So I went out and bought me a Samsung 850 evo 500 gb SSD. Today, I installed it. A ran recoverymode and reinstall os x. Then, I got the Lion. My idea was to install Lion and then move too El capitan. Lion has been installed and worked fine. But when I try now to upgrade to El capitan, get the same problem as above. It is said it will take about 24 minutes, but a few hours later he know 20 min.

What the devil? It's something with my main card or something who does not like the el capitan last? Because Lion works...

    Please help me

I forgot to mention that I have also reset the SMC and PRAM without change. And I got a MacBook pro mid 2012. 16 GB of ram installed just after it was new.

  • Very slow Safari on iMac?

I'm under 10.10.5 - OX Yosemite because it crashes if I try to update.  I have an antivirus program on it, and I suspect that is the problem?  I often force enough Safari... especially on FaceBook.  I got a virus - or so he says... My memory has enough space to update but I'm afraid to because I get the white screen of death... and it does nothing most of the time without AppleCare to restart.  It seems that to download the update.  No idea why Safari is so strange?  Also how I could go about update without completely losing my computer? Of course, I could use help - thanks in advance!

ALL (without exception) anti-virus program will significantly degrade the performance of Mac and many will be specifically will interrupt the Safari. Some may some security for online banking packages.

What do you see in the activity monitor to suggest that the RAM is fine?

The EtreCheck report shows that you have only 33MB of free RAM in time, which can only cause slowdowns. Google Chrome only takes 1.3 GB of it. Chrome is a Devourer of enormous resources, so if possible, try to quit smoking by using another browser.

I have install an external withEl of h/d Cap but it is very slow. the h/d is USB 3 but the iMac's USB 2. the h/d is only 5400 RPM. a 7200 RPM 7 / would accelerate the iMac?

No, because the limiting factor is the computer is USB 2.0, which is how it connects any external drive apart the external drive. As USB 2.0 is much slower, there is no real advantage to a 7200 RPM drive. What you need is a Firewire enclosure that supports FW800 which is much faster than USB 2.0.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what I could do to speed it up? Thank you.

I wish I had an answer, but all I can do is rather echo to your problem. I have a 19 mid-2007 "iMac, contributed to the maximum with the RAM, 1 t disc hard less that half full, who did the same thing - he has worked with El Capitan until I updated to the latest version. Once that has happened the machine became so slow as to be unusable. It would take ten or twelve minutes to record a mouse click. When I restarted the machine, it took 32 HOURS to start (Fortunately it isn't my main Mac production).

Last week, I tried all the remedies of common sense - by removing unused software, keeping an eye on the activity monitor (there is nothing fancy here), etc. Finally, I did all the stuff start, PRAM, run utilities disk (no noted problem) and even tried to reinstall El Capitan to a bootable USB I did with my first Mac, the reinstall, but seemed not 'take' somehow - he wanted to repeat the installation procedure again and again.

I use the little Mac for Internet, e-mail and (as Karlis2) deal with some of the oldest pictures in my files - I'm sure that I have pictures on Time Machine, so I'm not too worried about it, but this was the first Mac way back in the day, I bought with my money and I'm a little sentimental on and would like to resurrect if possible... I wonder if there is a way to restore the operating system to an earlier version and it would make a difference?

  • Can I update to El Capitan directly from Lion?  I have an iMac 24 "early 2009.  I want to do this?

I think the Lion upgrade completely to El Capitan.  First of all, can I do this? I have an IMac in early 2009.  Are there reasons why I wouldn't want to do that?

Well, we can tell you that you should or should not pass, that decision is yours alone.  We can tell you the benefits of upgrading, but ultimately, it is for you to take advantage of them if you wish.

To upgrade to El Capitan, your computer must be one of the following conditions:

    • iMac (mid-2007 or newer)
    • MacBook (late 2008 or early 2009 or newer aluminium)
    • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    • MacBook Air (late 2008 or newer)
    • Mac mini (early 2009 or newer)
    • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)

So, if you have a 2009 iMac, then Yes, your computer can handle the upgrade.  You would from the App Store.  If you choose, make sure that you back up your system with Time Machine or something like CarbonCopyCloner.  Obviously, the upgrade: a more stable, secure system, and that you use the latest version of Safari, which is more stable and more secure than previous iterations.
