EMC PowerPath for iscsi or ESXi emebedded mpio connection

Hi guys,.

for my new farm ESXi 5.1, I have a lot of server and a large EMC storage one that I need to use with iscsi adapter and this new configuration we are thinking about using an EMC power path or do it at 5.1 ESXi mpio.

Who are the real benefit to using mpio EMC Powerpath VS ESXi integrated 5.1?

I'm not sure using it because reading a lot of problem for fixing ESXi and ESXi upgrade... There's a real advantage to use it?

Thanks in advance.

The advantage of the PP/VE on NMP is around 2 areas:

(1) use of the track.  NMP uses only 1 channel at a time.  It can swithc between them quickly, but still only 1 at a time.  PP/VE can use all ways of concurrency.  Some clients of mine have seen 50% + performance increases.

(2) recovery time.  PP/VE identifies MUCH faster than the NMP dead paths and opens the pathnames recovered much faster as well.

  • Questions of ESXi 5.1 ISCSI--> cannot establish a network connection (continued)

    Hello world

I had a problem there not too long ago (thread link below) where my ESXi hosts could not establish a connection with an IBM DS3500 on start up and "rescan", however their connectivity worked correctly without any problem after commissioning and when a "rescan" finished. We determined that the most likely cause was the unit IBM itself. However, I wasn't completely satisfied.

In order to deepen the question and dismiss my guests being the problem, I created a unit ISCSI myself with two new hosts of ESXi 5.1 (version 1157734).

ESXi signals that it cannot connect to the initiator ISCSI (network error) - but it can run virtual machines and browse data stores?

    The configuration is the following:

    Test environment:

    2 x ESXi 1157734 hosts

    1 x server Freenas ISCSI (ZFS R10)

At the start of my ESXi hosts in the test environment, download the same error as our production environment. They also put on the same error message (in the event log) when I "rescan" map of the ISCSI software. However, once the scan is finished, I can't see any error message and everything continues as it should (Round robin, active active). I can get a brilliant flow also. It's as if the errors are almost... false positives?

Example of the error message (test environment):

    Connection to the iSCSI target

    IQN.2011 - 03.org.example.istgt:iscsi on vmhba35

@ vmk2 has failed. The iSCSI initiator couldn't

establish a network connection to the target.

    error

    17/10/2013-08:33:35

ESXi hosts are configured as follows:

    Test environment:

    • (ESXi hosts) Two network cards for ISCSI, one for VM traffic
      • NIC1: 10.20.20.2/24, NIC2: 10.30.30.2/24
    • (Freenas) Two network cards installed on the ISCSI device (dedicated to ISCSI traffic)
      • NIC1: 10.20.20.1/24, NIC2: 10.30.30.1/24
    • ESXi is set to round robin, which works properly (I can max on both ports at the same time)
    • Two VMKs are related to the ISCSI Software initiator and defined to dynamically discover the two ISCSI addresses
    • Unity of ISCSI and the hosts are not on the VLAN, the switch is dedicated to ISCSI traffic (However in the production, the two networks are separated by VLAN.) I removed the in the test environment to simplify everything)
    • The vSwitches (who hold a single VMK for ISCSI) are fixed:
      • "Promiscuous" mode: reject
      • Change of MAC address: accept
      • Forged passes: accept
      • The traffic shaping: disabled
      • No NIC teaming (obviously)
      • Each VMK inherits the settings of these

    Quick points:

    • My hosts use VMware approved NIC in my test environment. My production environment runs on full VMware hardware approved
    • Can I use ping of vmk join each each VMK ISCSI initiator
    • I can use the nc-z target_ip 3260 command to check connectivity to the port
    • The ISCSI test has two network adapters, each on 1 Gbps ports
      • I can get around 800mbps per port when copying lots of files (both ports are active)
      • I see no error in copying a large number of virtual machines around, or backup files
    • I only see errors on start up and "rescan".
    • I have two network adapters on each host ESXi dedicated for ISCSI. Each NETWORK card has a single VMK. A single mapped port on ISCSI, the other is mapped to port B (I used to have two VMKs by nic, but I removed that in order to simplify everything)
    • I have updated the firmware on our switch of production. No results
    • I've used 4 different switches in order to avoid a network problem. No results
    • I tested ESXi versions 5.0, 5.1 (799733 & 1157734), all have the same mistakes
    • The ISCSI ports are on different networks according to the VMware (I was told not to put on the same network VMKs)

Any ideas? It's starting to drive me up the wall. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I've seen several times in recent months and was beginning to think it is specific to the HP P2000 units because it's the only time wherever I saw him! I now believe that ESX/iSCSI rather than issues of driver or table.

On my last install, I found that errors occur as soon as the table is connected, i.e. before any storage is displayed.

Single host ESX, no guests. 2 Intel adapters to 2 HP past by dedicated HP P2000 1 GB table with all 8 wired ports.

All roads are good, all lights are in the State expected.

It did not affect the use of the storage in question to any site, so there has been no need / a momentum of any further investigation.

After this update, I tried to access these servers through the

I found no information on this subject in the knowledge base, or discussions. What I am doing wrong. This command worked perfectly with 4.0 and its updates.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

    Thomas

Since you have a mixture of guests 4.1 and 4.0, you will need to use the last 4.1 vCLI to manage your 4.1 hosts. The CLIs are mostly compatible with the previous version, including point releases or back 1 exit. The error is liekly your vCLI releases 4.0 most try to manage and configure a host 4.1

You can download the latest here http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vcli/ or use vMA 4.1 vCLI which includes the last vCLI

  • separate subnets for the ESX/ESXi management ports (vMotion, manage, FT, etc..)

Is it better to have all of your VMKernel ports on the same subnet or subnets separate (one for each role, iSCSI, management, vMotion, FT)?  Are their potential problems with either scenario?  Please include the ESX and ESXi.  I want to get my setup just as it should. Please let me know also if you need additional information.

I have licenses for ESX and ESXi, but I'm leaning toward ESXi are all vSphere 4 Update 1.

    Hello

In fact, you have to use separate subnets for your vmkernel ports but they can run on the same thread. You can share a subnet between a vmkernel and service console, but not between two vmkernels. Just like that. So yes, you need to use several subnets.

  • NETWORK cards for iSCSI consolidation

    Hello

I use ESX4.0 on Dell r710 and EqualLogic iSCSI SAN.  Currently I have my setup iSCSI on 2 NETWORK interface card to balance the load with "road based on the original virtual port code".  What is the proper way to configure load balancing for archiving a higher bandwidth for iSCSI?  Should I use another method?  There seems not to be too well balancing because it seems that it is only by using a NIC at a time.  I pushed very hard system see if the second NETWORK card to lead, but it didn't.  I activated the option of iSCSI vSwitch load balancing.

Is it better if I place 2 connections iSCSI separated to the San for the better bandwidth?  What is this supported method?

    Thank you

Load balancing only gives you a higher ratio of performance if you build more than one TCP conversation. It balances the conversations between the links. As you have a conversation with your host ISCSI traffic it will always use a link.

How to generate more than one conversation in the world ESX4.0 is now MPIO. You can do it on the same virtual switch (and it SHOULD load balance their) or even better put them separate from the virtual switches and follow the information published on the design of a solid, redundant ISCSI network

  • Setting up iSCSI between ESXi host and MD3000i, firewall Option missing

I try to configure the iSCSI access and the MD3000i manual head to the firewall option in VI Client.  However, when I go to Configuration - & gt; Profile of security - & gt;  the option firewall appears briefly and disappears?

I'm having problems to recognize the iSCSI host table and I think that this may be due to the firewall.

    Hello

I believe that in the latest versions of ESX (3.5u3 for sure), 3260/tcp port (you need for iSCSI) is automatically opened when you turn on the iSCSI (iSCSI software that is).

You should choose abe to connect using the VI client, click the host in question and select the 'configuration' tab and then the item "security profile. Who should be open all ports.

Remember that when you use iSCSI, you must as well a VMkernel port and connection of console in your LAN IP storage space. If two IPs per ESX host. The Console launches the iSCSI link, the VMkernel carries the iSCSI connection data.

EDIT: Sorry, only now I noticed that you are using ESXi. In this case, you won't need a port Console service (because ESXi has one)

  • Change STP UME in RSTP mode on two stacked powerconnect 6224 configured for iSCSI during normal operation

    Hello

I'll do a fw upgrade during normal operation on a stack of 6224 circulating BPMH, I am currently aware of recommendations Dells run RSTP on switches configured for iSCSI traffic connected to Equallogic SAN.

I intend to set up another pile with two 6224 to failover and then perform the upgrade on the stack of "old." My question is if it's possible to run BPMH on the 'old' stack RSTP executing on the new stack when LAG is configured between the two batteries?

Another option would be if it is possible to reconfigure the 'old' UME to RSTP stack without interruption between the hosts and the SAN first?

Guidance on this subject would be greatly appreciated

    Cree

Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol is based on RSTP and is backward compatible with

RSTP and STP. So, you should be able to run BPMH on the old and RSTP on the new.

  • Several bays in P410 controller for presentation to ESXi?

    All,

    I have a server HP DL180 G6 with a P410 (512 BBWC) and 8x1TB the SATA drives.

    Final objective:

    (A) to create a single RAID 5 array w/hot or RAID50 table using all the physical disks

    (B) logically divide the RAID 5 / group RAID50 sparer < volumes 2 TB for presentation to ESXi

The problem I have is that I can't find a way to make B) above work with the P410 controller. When I enter the RAID level configuration of the bios that I have options to create, view, and delete logical drives. Once I have do A) above, which seems to be the end of the road and I have no way to sculpt the space free until further forward to install ESXi. I also tried to use the configuration utility of the table offline (ACU) but don't see any options/benefits to the wire by using the configuration at the bios level.

As you know, does not recognize ESXi > 2 TB volumes so I need to divide up to < volumes 2 TB before taking the step of ESXi.  Once I can do that, I'll create a volume of 10 to 20 GB for ESXi and several < volumes 2 TB until the remaining free space is used.  I will then use scopes to string together them in VMware.

One of the solutions is to create a matrix RAID 1 on disc (2) and TWO RAID 5 arrays (3) disc to use all the disks.  ESXi sees so all of the logical volumes without problem.  I would really like to find a way to make B) above work so I don't have to lose the extra parity disks.

It is not possible with the P410, or is there something that I am missing?  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    Paul

    Hello

I can tell you that we do exactly this map on multiple LUNS.

It was done with the latest firmware and started the last Smartstart CD to access the ACU.

Create a table, select all discs, when asked for a fair size "reduce." Then click on 'create the logical matrix' to build your second. Tip Smartarray license is not necessary.

  • Dedicated switches for ISCSI switches dilemma...

    Hello

I bought two dedicated switches (I thought they were in any case) for ISCSI traffic that I had planned on just my ISCSI traffic from 3 dedicated ESX host connection.

Now the network team is said it opened enough ports on switches from my heart for the IP traffic such as vmotion, machine VM... etc.

How can I use the new switches that I bought for ISCSI traffic only, to include also the IP traffic, but everything in remaining secure? I would do that with the VLAN?

If so, how would I go on this subject?

I would use VLAN for that. Trunk at the bottom of the ESX host and dedicate and label your ports vmkernel or groups of ports.

    Example:

    vSwitch0 with -

    iSCSI: vlan 5

    VM traffic: vlan 6

    VMotion: vlan 7

    Configuration:

    VMkernel port ISCSI0, vmk1 tagged vlan 5

Port group VM-traffic, the tag vlan 6

VMkernel por vMotion0, vmk2 the tag vlan 7

Regarding safety, it depends on your needs. You can always leave the VLAN iSCSI and vmotion again according to the requirements of connectivity to other systems.

    Something like that can work?

  • Installation of physical switches for ISCSI traffic

Is that all I need to know from a networking perspective to configure ISCSI switches dedicated to support my ISCSI SAN on the left?

I do not plan on switches connected to the prod network. I only plan on using these switches for ISCSI traffic.

LeftHand supports LACP, if your supprt of switches that you should consider using the trunk mode. In my SAN P4300, I have two 3750's stacked. Each SAN node will connect to each switch and is located in a LACP/etherchannel link. All this is condensed to a single virtual IP address which is presented to ESX/i. don't forget to create a vmk for each dedicated vmware iscsi connection and bind according to this pdf.
