Problems with vicfg-iscsi on ESXi 4.1 servers

Hi all!

I am an administrator for some servers ESXi 60 + who have partially been upgraded to ESXi 4.1 (260247). Our vCenters have also been upgraded to 4.1.

After this update, I tried to access these servers through the

$> vicfg-iscsi - host ESX Server version is 4.1.0. This operation is supported on ESX, ESXi 4.0 4.0, or through VC 4.0

> end disconnect

I found no information on this subject in the knowledge base, or discussions. What I am doing wrong. This command worked perfectly with 4.0 and its updates.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Thomas

Since you have a mixture of guests 4.1 and 4.0, you will need to use the last 4.1 vCLI to manage your 4.1 hosts. The CLIs are mostly compatible with the previous version, including point releases or back 1 exit. The error is liekly your vCLI releases 4.0 most try to manage and configure a host 4.1

You can download the latest here http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vcli/ or use vMA 4.1 vCLI which includes the last vCLI

  • Problem with sh scripts on ESXi 5

I recently had to solve some problems with delays during renumerisations and restarts due to RDM which is attached to a host ESXi 5 discs. See this article for details http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1016106. Since I had a large number of RDM disks and needed to run the commands on each host I thought that I would write a script. I created the following scripts (just a subset here), but are there problems when it runs:

    Perennial.sh

esxcli storage device base setconfig d naa.60000970000292600424533033434642 - perpetually reserved = true

esxcli storage device base setconfig d naa.60000970000292600424533033443133 - perpetually reserved = true

    and

    perennial_verify.sh

    esxcli storage device base list d naa.60000970000292600424533033434642 > > storage_list.txt

    esxcli storage device base list d naa.60000970000292600424533033443133 > > storage_list.txt

I put the files on a data store and gave them execute permissions and they seem to work, however when I run the scripts, they give an error at the end of running something on command not found or something. It does not run all the commands as well. Finally, when the perennial_verify.sh is run more than once something happens in the file storage_list.txt - he had me puzzed for awhile - he showed that the file was different from zero in size, but when I did a cat or less that he would say that the file is not found. Finally I tried to copy the file down in the browser of data store and found that there was a printable character appended to the end - possibly a return carraiage. Now I can not rename the file or delete it - it is impossible to remove. If anyone has any advice on running sh scripts and the correct way to pipe the output to a file I know you more.

    Thank you

    Ed

What is the exact error do you receive when you try to delete?

Rather than redirect the output for each order, simply redirect the script in the log file, which will capture the entire script.

    ./perennial_verify.sh > storage_list.txt

  • Problems with the RAID on ESXi 4

    Hello

Although I have been using VMware Server for a few years, I am beginner with ESXi and would like some advice please.

I'm putting a laboratory machine using the following environment:

    Dell PowerEdge SC1425

    3 GB RAM

disks SCSI 2 x 73 GB attached to an Adaptec 39320 b. RAID controller with integrated HOSTRAID support.

I worked on how to configure oem.tgz to recognize the RAID controller and have successfully upgraded to ESXi 4.1.0.

Where I struggle is as follows:

I wanted to install ESXi on two SCSI drives, configured as RAID1 mirror.

I started by setting up a RAID1 with the Adaptec BIOS table. The problem is that when I installed ESXi, it would not fully start, claiming that I have two drives with the same UUID.

So, I did it again, reset the controller (i.e. no RAID). This time, ESXi installed and running successfully, but as I suspected it would be started from a single disc and shows the other drive as a data store.

Is there something I'm missing here? Should I persevere with RAID1 with the Adaptec BIOS configuration, or is there something in ESXi I should use?

It does not appear on the HCL, and I expect that the card is also well supported and a RAID device. The fact that the card does not appear in the simple.map may indicate that it is an OEM version. Adaptec card BIOS can be flashed so I would check that. There are versions of pilot listed as entries of subtext of the HCL. See if there is any meaning with those.

  • Problems with Adaptec RAID followed after update02 arcconf

    Hello NG,.

We have problems with a 5.1 ESXi host.

    It worked fine with 5.1_update01.

After that we did a upgrade to Adaptec arrconf tool 5.1_update02 gives us an error message saying:

    Inspectors found: 0

    Invalid controller number.

We suspect that the driver Adaptec SCSI (vmware-esxi-drivers-scsi-aacraid-510.5.2.1.29900.-1.1.5.799733.x86_64.vib) has been replaced by the hotfix.

Any who have had a similar problem?

What can we do? How to find the old driver?

    Kind regards...

    Hello

to install VIB/driver to take effect, you must restart you host. If something goes wrong don't worry, you can use alt-bootbank to restore any changes made by the installer.

To use successfully restore to the previous picture SHIFT + R during the process of start-up of ESXi.

  • Problem with the app on iTunes downloading updates

In recent weeks I had problems with the availability of the Apple download servers.  Most of the downloads are refused because the server is not available.  If I manually choose each update I can get them later.  All the other progs work very well and iTunes diagnostics are all OK.

    Is this a general problem?

    I use iTunes ver 12.3.3.17 64-bit on Windows 10

Try a forced reboot hold home and Sleep/Wake buttons simultaneously for about 15-20 seconds until the Apple logo appears. You won't lose anything.  Then sign out of the iTunes Store and log in.

Depending on your situation, it is possible that the servers may be busy as well.

  • Debian Wheezy 7 - iSCSI / LIO problem with ESXi 5.0

    Hi all

I had a Debian Wheezy on a HP ML310e server. This server should be used as an iSCSI - storage server.

Unfortunately I am not able to connect my 5.0 with LIO iSCSI target ESX servers.

I used the implementation of LIO (targetcli) for iSCSI and I used the official installation manual Linux target SCSI - ISCSI.

I know that the discovery of the Portal works, because when I enter the IP Address of storage in the dynamic discovery, the two portals of storage can be found. BUT any new features.

I disabled the CHAP authentication, because I thought that it might have to do with it, but still no go.

My Windows 2003 R2 64 bit backup server can connect without a problem.

I have a feeling it's something small, but unfortunately I can't find any debugging or a newspaper for the login process.

  • The upgrade to ESXi 4.1 with storage iSCSI software to ESXi 5.5

I intend to upgrade ESXi 4.1 with which I have attached to ESXi 5.5 iSCSI software storage

I've updated all my guests who were on the SAN storage with no problems.

I would like to know that if it there's nothing I should take care before I update the host connected iSCSI to ESXi 5.5, as for the hosts with SAN attached storage I made to remove the cables of SAN before upgrading the host.

Also, if all known problems, you will be informed during the upgrade to ESXi 4.1 to ESXi 5.5 with iSCSI Software storage, please let me know?

If there is no different process to upgrade coz in ESXi 4.1 I do not see this link ports of iSCSI vmkernel ports software iSCSI but I know in ESXi5.5 we have to or I just launch a procedure of standard upgrade via the Update Manager and everything will be taken care?

    Thanks in advance

With ESXi prior to version 5, linking ports had to be done via command line. However, if it has been configured correctly, you should be able to upgrade to ESXi 5.5 (assuming that the host has not been previously updated since version 3). BTW. the last time that I disconnected the host of storage for an upgrade has been with ESX 3.0.

  • Problem with iSCSI installation program

    Hi all

Like most of the people that I saw a play with the new features of vSphere, but I hit a problem with Setup of iSCSI.

Here, the background is, we have 3 Dell R805 servers with 12 network cards. Connected to Dell PS5000 3 WITHOUT. What im actually doing on our test server is set up 4 of these ports of network card for conenctivity in our san.

I followed the guide to iSCSI, vSphere to the letter until page 35, where he talks about the Jumbo frames. This is what im having issues.

    Create a Jumbo Frames-Enabled vSwitch

Configure a vSwitch for Jumbo frames by changing the MTU size for this vSwitch.

    Procedure

1 to set the size of the MTU to vSwitch, run the vicfg-vswitch - m & lt; MTU & gt; & lt; vSwitch & gt; order of the

    vSphere CLI.

This command sets the MTU value for all the uplinks on the vSwitch. Should be the largest MTU size

Size MTU among all connected to the vSwitch virtual network adapters.

    2. run the vicfg-vswitch - l command to display a list of the vSwitches on the host and verify that the

    the vSwitch configuration is correct.

This part I did successfully and vSwitch1 shows as being MTU 9000 activated.

Sound this next part is difficult to know.

Create a VMkernel Jumbo Frames - Enabled Interface

If you are using an ESX host, you must use the command line interface to create a VMkernel network interface

that is activated with the frames.

    Procedure

    1. connect directly to the console of the ESX host.

2 use the esxcfg-vmknic command to create a connection VMkernel with Jumbo Frame supports.

    esxcfg-vmknic - a - I & lt; address ip & gt; n & lt; netmask & gt; m & lt; MTU & gt; & lt; port group name & gt;.

3 launch the esxcfg-vmknic - l command to display a list of VMkernel interfaces and check that the

the Jumbo Frame-enabled interface configuration is correct.

    4. check that the VMkernel interface is connected to a vSwitch with frames enabled.

    5. configure all switches physical and all physical or virtual machines to which this interface VMkernel

    connects to support Jumbo frames.

If I run the esxcfg-vmknic - l command, it shows 4 NICs I have MTU 1500. I'm confused as to what I'm doing here. What is the esxcfg-vmknic - a - I & lt; address ip & gt; n & lt; netmask & gt; m & lt; MTU & gt; & lt; port group name & gt;. command doing?... No matter what I put as the name of the Port Group that does not work... All I get when I run the command again is the list of options.

Thus, at this point my tests came to a stop. How can I get my NETWORK cards to show as 9000, and why the documentation provides commands that don't work?

I must emphasize, that we ran 3.5 successfully 12 months, if im not a total newbie to ESX.

Sorry for the long post, but I thought that he better explain it properly.

    See you soon

Looks like you have always vmknic as mtu = 1500. "" the only way to get the ti 9000 is remvoe the port groups iscsi1 ~ 4 and them with readd ' 9000 m ' in the esxcfg-vmknic - a cmd.

try and let us know how it goes. esxcfg-vswitch output would be also good to confirm that your vswitch is 9000 mtu.

  • Problems with iSCSI Multipath i/o

    Hi people,

I just started testing with ESXi 4 and hit a snag with the software iSCSI adapter and Multipath i/o.

A bit of background reading, I understand that the storage architecture is a little different to 3.5, with the new PUBLIC service announcement.

    Anyway, here's the implementation.

    Single host ESXi 4.0

    -vSwitch1

    -Two cards of uplink physical

-Two ports, with a VMKernel interface in each group (see attachment "Storage4 - Network.jpg'")

    -10.42.80.107 & 10.42.80.108

-L' order of the adapter has been supplanted in the port groups while only 1 adapter is active in two groups of offices

-Added the two interfaces VMKernel (vmk1 & vmk2) for iSCSI adapter, using the commands 'esxcli nic swiscsi.

-Basically, everything described in the VMWare "iSCSI SAN Configuration Guide"

    Thecus R4500i iSCSI SAN

    -Two physical network adapters

-Each physical NETWORK card has it's own IP address

    -10.42.80.200 & 10.42.80.201

So in this configuration, I should end up with 4 paths:

    ESXi 10.42.80.107 - SAN 10.42.80.200

    ESXi 10.42.80.107 - SAN 10.42.80.201

    ESXi 10.42.80.108 - SAN 10.42.80.200

    ESXi 10.42.80.108 - SAN 10.42.80.201

That is what I get, if I look in the "Configuration\Storage Adaptors\iSCSI software adapter" (see attachment "Storage2 - Paths.jpg'").

But here's the problem, when I take a look in "Configuration\Storage\Devices\iSCSI Software Adaptor\Manage paths", I get only one path (see attached "Storage3 - Paths.jpg").

Can someone help explain this? Did I miss something?

This same configuration (servers, network cards, SAN, etc.) everything is perfect with multiple paths in ESXi 3.5

(And Yes, I know that the Thecus ' "is not on the HCL supported, but we are only talking about standard iSCSI here, no additional Plugins storage, etc.)

Not uber-urgent, but annoying, as this lack of multipathing would stop a vSphere deployment.

    Thank you

    Graham.

Looking at the trace, it seems that, the table is not confirming to the specification when it sends data VPD. Let's not id NAA format. According to "spc3r23, 7.6.3.6.1 basic format of identifier NAA", the first Quartet of the NAA id can be 0 x 2, 0 x 5 or 0 x 6. However, the trace shows 0 x 9. ESX 4.0 does not have several paths to the LUN b ' cos of this. Is there a way to disable 'Page of Identification of device' on the side table.

  • Problem with the start of VMware ESXi 5.0

I just installed VMware ESXi 5.0 on a new Cisco UCS B200 series blade with two 300 GB hard drives configured in a RAID 1 mirror.  I went through and completed the installation of VMware ESXi 5.0 on this server.  When the installation is complete and the server restarted, he did not initiate the ESXi where I can change the IP address and VLAN.  Instead, I get this text string after the initial boot sequence that is shown in the attachment.  I have a guest who said Shell > do not know why I can not start correctly in ESXi 5.0.  Thank you!  Paul

    Hi Paul,.

Looks like you boot to the EFI shell. What is the startup policy that you have configured on this server service profile? It should look like the one below.  If there is a problem with the boot order, you should be able to type "EXIT", then enter on the EFI shell to exit the prompt. If your startup is similar to the one below and you still experience this issue, try to downgrade and re - ack the blade.

Let me know if it helps.

    Ty

This usually happens for two reasons.  The first reason is that your BIOS is unable to properly read a GPT partition.  The second would be if your BIOS is starting from the wrong drive.  Check your BIOS and make sure the drive that you installed ESX is one that is configured to start.

It could also be that your NETWORK adapter driver is included in the ISO file.

If you NIC are supported (on the HCL) then you can simply load the appropriate driver or create an ISO custom (with the help of the image generator) with the correct driver added.
