I use Outlook Express in XP Mode on Windows 7. Sometimes I "save under" taken from emails Outlook Express Inbox in my data drive D:\, which is accessible from the two XP-Mode (such as % ComputerName % D) and Windows 7 (such as D:\).
I saved an email as messages in "D % computername%:\folder", say, July 9, 2014.
Then, 3 weeks later, I browse the D:\folder even under Windows 7 with Windows Explorer in Details view, and to my surprise, the update of this post changed July 29, 2014 at the precise moment that I'm over the file. The Date of creation remains as it was - 9 July 2014.
Surprises I encounter almost every day, both at home and at work, where I also use Outlook Express to receive emails in XP mode on Windows 7. Simply by looking at a folder that contains recently saved .eml, change files automatically their update at the present moment in time, without even opening an any of them.

This strange behavior is unique to .eml files. It does not affect any other type of file that I save in XP mode to be seen later in Windows 7.

When you head into a file in the Explorer, Windows will search to see if there is a manager of property for the type of file involved, and if there is, show a ToolTip which gives some of these properties. For an .eml file, it would be ofthe subject , DateReceived.

These data are extracted the message headers and written to an alternative stream (ADS) in the file Explorer can find them and post them. This would normally happen as soon as the file is written to disk if the location it is written in is indexed, then perhaps the folder that you saved it is not indexed.

Writing to the ADS is a change in the file, if its DateModified is updated accordingly. The file important dates are not affected - DateSent, DateReceived, DateCreated. Is this a problem?

This strange behavior is unique to .eml files.

I don't know if it's true. . EML files are plaintext files, so there is no provision for special properties in the file itself, because it is for, say, .doc or .jpg files. The NTFS file system is a file to has many flows of data, and this is where this type of metadata can be stored. If you want to keep your inviolate .eml files, save them to a FAT drive.

    If you copy the dbx file, you will need to put in the OE message store to read the messages. Copy the messages themselves.

    Create a folder on your desktop or elsewhere, then in Outlook Express open the folder with the messages you want to save. Highlight a message, and then Ctrl + A will highlight all (or Ctrl-button down while you select only messages you want), now, drag and drop them into the folder on your desktop.

    Now you can copy this folder to a CD and you'll be able to read the messages on the CD by double-clicking them.

    You can see the messages with the same subject get attached, probably with (1), (2), etc. One of these programs may be useful for you. Take a look and decide.

    If you have included Folders.dbx in the backup, then you could import the files into WinMail.

    There is no bar in WLMail 2011 and 2012. What version do you use? The last version to work under XP (this forum) is WLMail 2009 and having a Menu bar with file on it.

    I followed your instructions and now have "storage folders" visible. However that a single user account recorded message records showing if you keep double clicking and scrolling down.     Deleted items is probably damaged. On the off chance that you want messages to be saved in deleted items, (a garbage can), move them to a local folder, you create and then follow these steps.

    With OE closed, find the DBX file for deleted items and delete it.  Another will be created automatically when you open OE.

    Can someone please provide a solution step by step? Most of the messages and the links here seems to apply to a different situation, as OE6 and WLM residing on the SAME computer, or under the SAME operating system. Not so in my case.

    I see that Windows Live Mail is supposed to be able to import contacts and emails OE6. But where am I supposed to put old OE6 files on the computer so that Windows Live Mail can find them? OE6 only let me "export" to Outlook or Microsoft Exchange, nor of what exists on my old computer, nor my other!

    I have recently moved to a new PC with Win7 and have been using Live Mail - more often with success, I thought with the exception of one or two faults, but I'll probably post a question on those.
    On the audit of my old PC today, when I open Oulook Express have been downloaded more than 100 emails that have not appeared in Live Mail - dating back to the time I went.
    I tried to export these messages of OE, put it on a USB key and then import in LM LM do not seem to recognize them - these are the dbx files. Suggestions anyone please?

    If both computers use the same e-mail address, you must do this to get the messages on both.
     
    On both machines: tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced - Check: leave a copy of messages on the server.
     
    On a single computer only, make sure to delete messages after X days to satisfy your allocated space that you get from your server.

    My old computer with XP died and my other uses Windows 8, and I am on a steep learning curve.  I had saved my email on a portable hard drive, and it is stored as .dbx files.   Y at - it an equivalent of Outlook Express in Windows 8, and/or sort I can download these files in order to access all my old messages (in and out) and email addresses.  Help!

    As you know by now, my colleague has given you a bit of a "bum steer", Hazel.

    While you can not import Outlook Express (OE) in the Mail of Win8 application data, you may be able to import the data to backup OE (DBX files) in Windows Live Mail (2011 or 2012) as long as the backup contains a file named RECORDS. DBX. Assuming that to do this, follow these steps:

    1 download/install Windows [Live] Essentials 2012 via this page-online http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-live/essentials-home

    NOTE: When you install either version, there is an option to install only the applications that you want (for example, Windows Live Mail;) Windows/Movie Maker photo gallery) or the entire suite (includes also Windows Writer, SkyOneDrive, etc..).

    2. Once you've got Windows Live Mail installed, create a new folder on the desktop (call, for example, the DBX FILES for convenience) & place a copy of your DBX backup set (i.e., all your files DBX including RECORDS.) DBX !!) in this folder.

    3 VERY IMPORTANT! => open the folder that you created in step 2 above. Select all the [CTRL + A] as all the DBX files are highlighted. Right click on the folder group. Select PROPERTIES and uncheck the READ ONLY box (assuming that this is already done).

    4. open Windows Live Mail & run the hotkey ALT + F | Select import messages. Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and point the Import Wizard to the folder created in step 2 above & click OK

    The imported data (files) will be located as subfolders in Windows Live Mail imported files as shown in the figure below:

    Once your OE messages were imported, they can (a) stay at this place, (b) be moved folder to created by the user in the storage of files (by the above illustration) or (c) be moved to a folder created by the user in an e-mail account (other than a Hotmail account) you set up in Windows Live Mail (i.e., to access your new messages).
