It's a pretty good trick, considering that charmap.exe is one of the files that Windows File Protection is supposed to protect.

Do a full disc search for charmap (without extension), making sure to look into the hidden files and system.

If charmap.exe is not in C:\Windows\system32 (where it belongs), he probably is not in C:\Windows\system32\dllcache (where it also belongs).

If you have a directory (which is common for systems with Windows) C:\i386 pre-installed, you should find charmap.ex_, which is a compressed version of the file.  You must use the EXPAND command from a command prompt window (start > run > cmd > OK) to decompress:

    Expand c:\i386\charmap.ex_ c:\windows\system32\charmap.exe
    copy c:\windows\system32\charmap.exe c:\windows\system32\dllcache

Don't forget the space before the c:\ at two locations in two lines

You will also find the charmap help files in C:\i386 and can expand those as well if necessary.  The expanded files should reside in C:\windows\help

How to restore items where my images are returned in the top left corner when it is open, and they have a "mesh" around them? Something to reset elements so that the image appears in the center of the box... I can't have more than 1 image open at the same time to work on. I e I can't pass a layer on the image to the other.

OK - I got out my trusty Photoshop Elements 10 - The Missing Manual and figured it out. What I was trying to describe, it was how to make images with 'tab' images 'floating '? This has somehow reset without my knowledge. What you need to do to get your images 'Floating' back is to click on "EDIT" in your editor - at the bottom of the drop-down list hover your cursor to "GÉNÉRAL" and click on - at the bottom of the drop-down list, click in the bottom left box 'ALLOW FLOATING DOCUMENTS IN FULL EDIT MODE' - and then click OK.

    That solved my problem!

Try to right click in the area around the address bar and make sure that 'bar menu' is checked for your menu bar back.

As for the firefox button, which does exist in the 29, try the icon "hamburger" on the right (vertical of tree lines), this 'thing' is now the menu 'new and improved '.

  • Missing system tools

My system tools folder is empty so that access is more disk cleanup, Defragmenter, System Restore etc. Manually find these somewhere?

    Thank you

Although it is always a good idea to check for malware, please do not upgrade on the spot (aka repair facility), at least not until you have exhausted other options.  In addition, in Windows XP, run the file system (sfc/scannow) checker won't you good at all (it won't hurt either).

The System Tools folder is just a collection of shortcuts (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Menu demarrer\programmes\accessoires\outils tools).  Unless your computer has been seriously compromised, the tools are still there:

    Defragmenter: %SystemRoot%\system32\dfrg.msc

    Disk Cleanup: %SystemRoot%\system32\cleanmgr.exe

    System Restore: %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

    Information System: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\msinfo32.exe"

    Security Center: %SystemRoot%\system32\wscui.cpl

    Character map: %SystemRoot%\system32\charmap.exe

The shortcut to schedule tasks is a bit more complicated, but see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc721931.aspx

For re - complete the tasks of the system with the shortcuts (if you don't want to add them manually), see--> http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Accessories.htm

    Hi Jim,.

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

The guest account providing minimum privileges to perform tasks not requiring administrative privileges.  People using the guest account cannot install software or hardware, change settings, or create a password. Because the guest account allows a user to log on to a network, browse the Internet, and shut down the computer, you must disable the guest account when not in use.

You can open the command prompt in elevated mode (with administrative privileges), which is actually necessary to run multiple commands that can affect your system. If you use Windows 7 Professional or higher edition, group policy can be edited privileges for the guest account. To learn more, you can re-post your query in the TechNet forums calling for changes in the group policies for the guest account.

    Hello CalebCox,

I suggest that you try the methods below to resolve this issue.

    Method 1:

This problem can be caused due to infection by the Virus. I suggest that you run a virus scan on your computer using Microsoft Safety scanner and check if you have the same problem.

    http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Check if you have the same problem in the new user account.

You can refer to the link below, which will give you information on how to create and configure user accounts in Windows XP

Thank you so much my irritating problem to Geethu B to put a lot of thought. Unfortunately, none of the steps worked with my system which is a Windows 7 Ultimate, BUT

My son fell in and put everything to me pretty quickly.

    1. Start menu

    2. all programs

    3. click on accessories

    4. click on system tools

    5. click on disk cleanup

6 remove the thumbnails by forcing the system to create from your images.

    7. click on update and all the images, rather, icons, back on the envelopes of file.

  • My Administrative Tools folder is empty, what happened

I don't know when this happened. My computer is slow, so I was going to defragment, nothing in the folder.

    http://www.Vistax64.com/tutorials/137512-administrative-tools-restore-shortcuts.html

Disk Defragmenter is not in the Administrative Tools folder.

    http://www.pchelpforum.com/Windows-tutorials/106801-how-defragment-your-hard-drive-Windows-Vista-Windows-7-a.html

Select Start, all programs, accessories, System Tools, cleaning disk to emptying your trash, delete temporary Internet files and other selected options. I recommend also you click Other Options, System Restore and delete all but the last system restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Using the system restore option is most appropriate when your system is slow and you need to increase the free disk space on your C partition. If you have errors that could be solved by using the system restore to your system settings back to before the error occurred initially do not use this option.

If more than one person uses the computer and they have their own user log you need to run Disk Cleanup in each user profile that you want to delete all the unwanted files.

A better program of disk cleanup is cCleaner. Delete System Restore points may be important if you have little free disk space. The ability to delete them is one of the tools options. You can selectively remove those created in less important moments.

cCleaner also comes with a registry tool. Do not use this tool as any registry cleaner could lead to the creation of very difficult to resolve system errors.

  • Admin tools folder is empty.

A few months ago, I managed to get a rogue virus on my computer hard drive. Ive tried a few things so far but without success.

Ive connected the antivirus avg, including a spyware remover, this had detected a little, but after this all my folders and files were still marked as hidden.
After looking on these forums I have found someone who has a problem like I have, but they managed to get it fixed.
From reading this thread, I've run rkill.exe and unhide.exe. After that, my folder in the start menu have returned but they all don't empty no icons in them.
Now, I was about to use the recovery disk of windows xp sp3 for the first time, but when I took the package the disc is warped and distorted and will not read.
Anyone have an idea how I can get the admin tools back? There was something changed in the parameter in there which prevents me from going to the line.
    My features are-
    Dual AMD Athlon 64 X 2
    Core Processor 6000 + 3.10 GHz
    2.00 GB of RAM
Any info would be greatly appreciated thank you.
    Dave.

Start Regedit.exe and navigate to the following locations one by one:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-SOFTWARE-Microsoft-Windows-CurrentVersion------Explorer------user Shell folders

    - and -

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-SOFTWARE-Microsoft-Windows-CurrentVersion------Explorer------shell folders

Delete the value named common administrative tools (if any).
    Close Regedit.exe and restart Windows.

See if the shortcut in the Administrative Tools folder is restored. If this is not the case, see Solution 2 below.

The utility AdminTools (~ 8 kb) restores the missing shortcuts to the Administrative Tools folder.
