Emulation of physical server in a VM environment

Suppose you have a virtual machine that you want to imitate as much as possible the environment of a physical server in which all the resources of the physical server's CPU are dedicated to this OS.  The physical server that you emulate has 2 cores.  The ESX (i) server on which the virtual computer runs has 8 cores.  You always want to allow other VMS running on your host ESX (i).  But you want to ensure that, for this one, it gets way too CPU resources close as possible to what he would if it was not virtualized test VM.

What is the best way to achieve this?  For example,.

-Give the virtual machine a pool of resources that matches the physical server that you emulate.  For example, if the physical server had 2 hearts at @GHz each, then give the virtual machine a reserve of 4 GHz.  Don't set the processor affinity and let the ESX to plan other virtual machines to use your test VMs carrots.  Let your use VM to test hearts on the ESX(I) host as long as he gets his reserve of 4 GHz.

-Give the above mentioned VM booking resources like the processor affinity as game on the virtual machine to its 2 hearts and all the virtual machines to ensure that no other virtual machines do not use 2 carrots that is using your VM test.  This is based on the theory, as in a non-virtualized environment, the operating system would have exclusive access to the nuclei, so to emulate this environment VM as exclusive access to these carrots without other virtual machines being planned in this regard.  However, because of ESX (i) to use of worlds and other differences between planning on physical servers and virtualized server affinity can really be not help not to emulate.

I would be interested to get comments on this scenario.  The goal is to reproduce in close to the environiment in which the applications inside the BONE meet as much as possible as they would on a physical machine to use the processor as possible.

Hmm,

I might be inclined to actually include the reservation, as you never know if other virtual machines in your environment can increase their demands at the time you are testing and create contention scenarios.

I also, consider reserving memory - if you don't not VMware will be very happy to 'manage' memory for you, you potentially slow down

  • vCenter Appliance physical server, 3 guests, small environment size

    Hi all.

I'm trying to move a vCenter device to a physical server.  This is a small facility with only 3 guests.  I'm a bit new to VMware.  If I put in place, single sign - on again and add the hosts once again, this isn't a problem.  I did not put groups in place and yet it is a new installation. In fact, there is a cluster but DRS and HA is lit.  I want to remove the cluster but not the hosts.  We have a small Windows 2008 R2 AD domain.  The vCenter Server is member of the domain, as are ESXi hosts.  This is version 5.5.

Is it OK if I simply remove the vCenter device by stopping and removing disk and inventory, then install the physical server and add hosts, delete the server appliance of AD and add the new physical server to AD and set up SSO again on the new server - that will work?  Did I meet problems questions?

I would point out that the reason behind my fact that must implement vSA on the 3 hosts, and from what I read, I can't launch the vCenter on a VSA host device, and 3 guests must be guests of VSA if each should share its space with the other 2. I also read that I can't add VMS to guests until the VSA cluster has been created.  So I need to ditch the current cluster and take the guests out of it.  That a host is always under the existing cluster.  I'm hoping that by performing these steps above that I can add my hosts to the new server physical vCenter once it's running and just delete the old a.  If this is not the way forward on this issue, if you please point me in the right direction and you will be worth your weight in gold as far as I'm concerned.

Thank you very much in advance,

  • Physical server VM disaster recovery

    Hello

Today, I meet some customers who would ask the site of recovery after a disaster. They would like to use all physical servers to the recovering site.

Here's the scenario. In the production site, they will have 3 host to ESXi 4.1, with BL460G6 (the Server Blade HP), 2 Proc Intel X 5600 series, 48 GB RAM. Storage use is NetApp with iSCSI (NETAPP FAS2040) options.

All their (converted from physical) virtual computers will consume about 4.2 TB, for most of the Linux server, multiple windows, according to. The growth of data every day is 1.6 GB. They will invest the same storage (FAS2040) on the site of DRC. Will of replication occurs every 15 minutes. They had a very good bandwidth

Now they're using the standard replication method, they transfer file to the DRC to their server (Linux, replication, automated with script-based) and until now its works very well.

Because they will migrate to Virtual Server, after all migration, they all want their server used in the DRC Site. My point is to know how to do it. Pouvez VMware replicated on the physical server? They will not invest more than license VMware or upgrading their equipment. They want to use the server as is.

I thought to use RDM, create a LUN, attached to the virtual machine with the physical/virtual compatibility, then use the NetApp replication method to replicate the DRC site. Then, in the DRC, all the physical server mapped to the same LUN. Restoration, then, just reverse the replication. But then, the implementation will be difficult, because each server has a specific LUN (it had more 20 + server).

    A guy had an idea?

    Thanks for your help.

From what I understand so far, they virtualized or not their systems and virtual machine files are stored on NetApp storage synced to the DRS!

In this case, with the environment of virtualization (VMware Essentials) in place at the DRS, they would have only to add the virtual machine to inventory and them lights disaster on the production side. This doesn't mean no reconfiguration of drivers (for the merger to the physical hardware), up to date systems (synchronizes every 15 min.) and very little time to have the environment running on the DRS.

The advantage of the Essentials package on the free version is management, which equals the production site and the possibility of use for example, backup software, which usually requires a licensed version.

  • Conversion of physical server into a virtual machine

    Hello

I would like to take a physical server and convert it to a virtual machine on the same box.  I'm new to VMs, so please tell me if this is possible and if yes, what is the best way to do it. Right now, I think these are the basic steps:

    (1) take operating system image current (2003 Server STD) using Acronis.

    (2) wipe server and install ESXi 4.

    (3) use the free VMware Converter to convert the Acronis image to a guest VM on the ESXi host.

Will this work? Am I missing something? The traps that I should look out for?

A few questions more to go with this:

-J' currently have an ESXi 3.5 on a desktop host. Wouldn't be better to convert this machine on the fly to a guest on this 3.5 host, then move the guest to the new 4.0 host once it is ready?

-This server is now an application server and has a few databases, such as WSUS and Kaspersky Administration kit and maybe something else I can't think right now. Is that causing trouble with the DBs in the transition from the physical to the virtual?

-The machine has also acts as a file server and is connected to our iSCSI SAN. Will be a problem or I would be able to remap the LUN to the virtual machine quite easily just like I did to the physical machine?

Sorry for the long post. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

As long as you can take decisions associated with the image with Acronis and then convert it to a virtual machine, I think this is a good approach.  You can convert the server in a virtual machine running on your ESXi 3.5 environment but I would not run a server database production on class workstation hardware.  The performance would be probably pretty bad if you had a large number of users hitting that database.  As for using Acronis I know that it is supported but in the past I have never tried to convert an Acronis image for a virtual computer by using converter.

The databases themselves should not have any problem on a virtual machine.  SQL runs in a virtual machine and saw complex databases even accomplish a lot.

Reconnect to your iSCSI SAN shouldn't be a problem either.  You must ensure that the networking on the newly built 4 ESX host is configured to allow you access to all the VLANS required (iSCSI VLANS, server VLAN, etc.).  It is an important step to ensure that you have right or you will not be able to reinstall your iSCSI LUNS, once the server is converted.  Once the networking is configured the process of reconnecting to the iSCSI LUN from inside your virtual machine is the same as if it was physical.

    Good luck!

  • P2V conversion of variable with the physical air to ESXi VirtualCenter environment using a laptop as the converter/transport

    Hello

I'm looking at a collection of physical servers for migration to a virtualized environment: the goal is to move from a huge collection of 30-40 physical servers of different brand/model/specification and physically scattered in many places for a single grid filled with boxes of ESXi.

I have a question about the best way to conduct the physical to the virtual conversation process (don't worry - looking for high level only indicatively!).

For the bottom, 30-40 physical servers are not connected/not related in terms of operating system (ie. not a member of a common domain, run multiple operating systems - for most variants of Windows NT4/2000/2003 etc) but are connected to the same physical network infrastructure and all contribute to a common function. In short they can each be considered in the sense of functional servers 'specific application.  Further and I think very important to mention, the current environment and the new rack/rigging are (to be) exploited isolation - IE. Air-ajar.

I see my new rack running DL380s running ESXi and images on a San shared and connected them via a dedicated switch. with a VirtualCenter instance server in there somewhere to hang together... not sure at this stage as to where I should do that in a Machine virtual itself (preferable to reduce the hardware requirements), or if a physical process adding unique 'management' style server would be more appropriate.  I also have a laptop to 'manage' the environment which will be connected to the switch on an ad hoc basis.

I want to be able to do is use this notebook to go to each of the existing physical servers in turn (connection on its network switch) and create a virtual image of it (hot or cold, although I guess the cold option seems nicer than the existing server remains completely intact) before resuming the laptop computer to the virtual test bench , and then "push" the virtual image in VirtualCenter and on an ESXi host (with any post import etc. reconfiguration tasks that may be required).  I'm not sure what components I need where to do this - specifically which allows me to capture the physical server while having no connectivity with the VirtualCenter Server?  I've read through documentation/notes Converter Enterprise - this would be the correct way to go?  If so I should the Converter Enterprise Server component installed on the VirtualCenter server or the laptop itself (ie. What must be connected to what during the capture process?) ?  Or is there a simpler approach of independent style should I watch?

All advice/aid/comments greatly appreciated in advance!

    Simon

  • Migrate CUCM, CUP and CUC VMS from the physical server Dell to a UCS

    Hi all

We have 3 virtual machines from one physical server to Dell, we want to migrate those virtual machines from a server of the UCS.

    Reference Dell physical server:

    Model: PowerEdge M610

    UCS: Version of UCS B200 M4 3.0 (2 c)

I was wondering if just copy all the files of the virtual machine to another server or there is another procedure to do this... and also we need new licenses of vmware?

    Thank you very much!!

    Kind regards!

ESXi licenses is up to you, you might have bought it so that the UCS, or buy directly from VMWare, but you need to license.

As for traffic, if you have vCenter, you can move the virtual machines using it (vMotion and/or Storage vMotion), or if not, you can perform a cold migration.

  • Passing of TMS physical server in VM with external SQL Server

    What we have:

13.2 physical TMS with TMSPE running on the Windows Server 2003 Enterprise with SQL server 2005.

Application of TMS, tmsng, and TMSPE all located on the same server.

    What we wanted to do:

Move the 13.2 TMS with TMSPE to 2008 r2 VM with tmsng located on the separate server from SQL 2008 VM (external).

First attempt; the physcial and TMS VM servers with the same host name, the different IP addresses.

(Physical server removed from the field after copying tmsng db and taken offline - changed then to the TMS VM server host name).

13.2 of TMS and TMSPE installed smoothly on the virtual machine, we copied then the db tmsng existing since the physical server on the SQL 2008 VM server.

Everything seemed fine, except that we could not clearly one of the TMS tickets tell us different MST services were not running, this despite the Court and restaring every MSDS services several times.

TMPSE diagnosis showed all green, but the VCS - C told us a different story; with all of the connections; telephone directories and devices, users will fail with an http 400 error.

At this stage our window of opportunity was closing quickly, we had to go back and bring back the old physical server, on the line.

During testing, we used different for the physical host names and servers of MV, but we found TMS2 tickets thrown indicating different services of MST did not run on TMS1, so we thought we would try with identical host names for TMS1 and TMS2.

There are some dependencies that we missed?

Any advice on how to achieve better would be much appreciated.

    see you soon

    /Jens

    Hello

I have seen this problem several times before and his tickets basically generation because it has a double set of services listed in under TMS Server (below), the following list Maintenance TMSNG db when you move it, it shows that there are for example 1 TMS Live Racing Department and one stop of service TMS Live where the next generates this ticket. Simply click the clear list to solve the problem.

Regarding the TMSPE, have you moved the db TMSPE more on the new server or you let it run to the old?

At all the configurations to correct in terms of user name / etc in the field configuration settings?

    Hello

Since no one has replied, I can go with my assumptions that replicat process searches across data dictionary, and since he is a 11g Golden Gate executable, its not backward compatible with 10g.  To this end, I have duplicated my database with RMAN DUPLICATE ora11g, creating another database called ora11g2, changed my REPLOCAL. PRM file as follows (changes in bold):

    REPLICAT replocal
    SETENV (ORACLE_HOME = "/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1")
    SETENV (ORACLE_SID = "ora11g2")
    ASSUMETARGETDEFS
    Ggs_owner @ora11g2, ggs_owner PASSWORD username
    DISCARDFILE. / dirrpt/discard.txt, APPEND, 20 MEGABYTES
    DDL INCLUDE ALL
    CARD ggs_owner.golden, TARGET ggs_owner.golden, KEYCOLS (gold);

I then rebooted the components again, and finally, I was able to replicate the changes to the GGS_OWNER table. GOLD ora11g, at the same table in ora11g2.

    Thank you all.

    Hi all

im just wondering a little the steps involved in virtualize a physical server. (I have an esxi in place). So basically I have a server on the network physically and I would run some test on it (but want to be sure where im planing to virtualize physical and run the test on the virtual server).

    My question is

    1. how to start virtualization... I use Vconverter then bind to Esxi?

    2. after virtualization, since the physical and virtual server will have the same host name - it will be right conflicts?

3 should I remove the physical network? -If Yes... DNS pick will see the virtual as physical?

I'm in the process of upgrading my vSphere5.0 to 5.1, but before that I want to migrate my vCenter5.0 (VM on the cluster to vSphere5) to the physical server. I know there is no direct upgrade from the virtual to the physical server, so I have to migrate virtual and physical memory with same version 5 and then pass vCenter5.0 to 5.1 on the physical server. Please help with the steps and questions below:

    1. build the server target with the same operating system (win2008r2 std x 64, partition of 2 x 1 for OS and 1 for the vCenter database)

    2. stop services vCenter vCenter backup config using the data migration tool (vCenter5.0). Backup DMT include the ADAM database as well? If this is not what is the best way to migrate the ADAM database?

    3. SQL database backup

    4. create the DSN connection on the target server

    2. I use 2nd partion on the Server D: target as a new location for the DB (Source have a single partition C: and all that is on it), it won't break anything, just? You can select the destination during installation... no thing will happen

    Thank you very much

  • A physical server with 2 NETWORK interface card using a virtual machine as IPS (transparent VM) and everything should work normally?

    Hello guys.

Is there a diagram that I made, using for my self this question.

    2067917_1.png

As you can see, I have a physical server with 2 NIC I don't want to use a VM (with Snort) as IPS / IDS system for inbound traffic on the management of VLANS. Is it possible to use this VM in this way (as an IPS/IDS, VM with two NIC without any routing work?)? Maybe you have a suggestion, how can I achieve this, as easy as possible? Maybe you have an opinion, what OS unix system do I use?

Thank you for your time and your answers. Any useful information is much appreciated.

Yes, it should work. You need to look out for, it's that the 'outgoing' NIC is not connected to the same physical switch as the entrant and that there is no link between these two physical switches, because this would create a loop of layer 2 on the network.

I haven't worked much with Linux, but I don't see that you would have a problem to find some Linux/Unix with the possibility to bridge two network cards and use some software IPS to inspect the traffic.

  • VMware converter restarts the physical server after conversion!

    Hello

This can already city, but I can't find any discussion about it. I do some V2Vs using the converter Vmware 4.1.0

The problem I have is that once the converter is completed, it randomly restarts the physical server, I converted (does not seem to happen to any of them). Of course, I don't want the physical server switch on again as changes could be made to it. I don't see any option in the converter to tell him not to restart or even stop.  It's a VtoV.  He is a SQL Server. Windows 2003 64-bit.

I try without shutting down the server at all because it's a production server.  I don't have a Vcenter (to copy to an esxi to an another esxi).

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello

For sure in the Converter 4 there is an option for the source stop server after migration.

Below you will find a screen of VMware converter 5 with the option you are looking for. It is available at the end of the migration Assistant in OPTION --> option advance section

Below the download link for Converter 5
