Encryption of backup drive Seagate Plus

Hello

I made my first backup of my MacBook Pro yesterday on a backup drive Seagate Plus. I selected the "encrypt" option before doing so. The backup seems complete without incident, but now, when I right click to eject the hard disk, "Encryption 'Seagate Plus backup drive'" is grayed and I get the error message "the disc 'Plus backup drive Seagate' has not been ejected because one or more programs can use it." I did a powerpoint for class yesterday when running the backup, but no other programs were open and closed powerpoint, so as soon as I had enough. Someone has any ideas why this happens?

Thank you!

Hi Bonniehl:

I assume you are using Time Machine. Is this correct?

Do you have a message saying that the Time Machine backup?

When you use encryption, it really takes a lot of time.

I wouldn't recommend encryption, unless you have national secrets to protect.

See the following thread. Why the encryption of backup Time Machine takes so long?

  • Problem of backup drive Seagate

I have an iMac that fails to perform backups time machine, constantly in error-36 on several files in the journal and then ending by mistake-11. I got around this by using Data Rescue IV to copy all the contents of the disc to 2 TB backup drive Seagate Plus. During this process, I got a warning of Data Rescue saying me that slow read access has been detected from the internal drive and it was a sign of a failing drive. The time estimates would go in all directions, ranging from a few hours, thousands of days! Finally, after about a day, the backup was complete. However, when I tried to use this disk to restore a backup, the program "restore from backup" in the recovery partition was told that no backup not found on the disk. I even tried to rename and add folders so that the path of the folder on the Seagate drive looked like this: /Backups.backupdb/Computer name of the name/2016-06-18-214653/Disk Partition. Remember that I did not use time machine to back this up, I arranged everything simply the folder saved in other folders so that the path can trick the computer into thinking it as a backup in time real-machine, but it did not work. Is there a way I can use this Rescue IV data backup to restore the computer by using the recovery (command-R on startup) partition?

There are several possible reasons for the mistakes of TM backup that you met. They could be resolved by trying a different port on your iMac, disabling potentially conflicting software (garbage "anti-virus" useless example), using disk utility to 'fix' the volume of the source, reinstall OS X (assuming that it has become corrupted for some reason, the common result of 'cleaning up' apps) and other possible, although perhaps temporary solutions. If you are motivated to explore these options you can still.

The hierarchy of the Time Machine backup volume file is likely to be very different from that created by Seagate software, so I doubt it. The RP provides an option to restore from a Time Machine backup, and you will not be able to fool it by restoring a backup created by something else.

You are much more likely to succeed by copying the files manually backup volume, after having replaced the faulty internal drive with a new one. If Seagate program, all the files should be present, you just have to find them.

In the absence of other options, I would try to create a backup, redundant or "clone" of the source volume defective before doing something more. At the present time, you work with a reliable likely source of defective with no recognized backup of it.

  • I want to use Time Machine to backup all emails in gmail to a drive.drive Seagate and Lacie.

I have a Mac Mini with OS X Lion 10.7.5.  I want to use some software (Time Machine?) to back up my gmail

emails dating back to 2006 on a backup drive Seagate.  I installed the time Machine, and he backs up everything but

gmail emails.  Can someone give me help.

Time Machine is to back up files on a local disk. If your gmail emails are in local hard disk, they are ongoing. But if they are on a Gmail server, this isn't a function of time Machine.

I'm afraid that if I select "Use as backup drive", I might regret it... then I would understand.

If you use Time Machine with your Seagate hard drive, say Yes.

  • Backup Seagate Plus will not open in Windows 8?

I installed Windows 8 on Windows XP.   My Seagate Plus backup has not completed the process of restoration.  Now, I get an "unknown error" message when I try to open the Seagate dashboard.  Apparently, I'm not the only one with this problem.  Any suggestions?

    Hi Michael,

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

Please provide more information for me to better understand the issue.

The drive is detected on the computer?

Please check the status of the drive in Device Manager.

Follow the steps to open the Device Manager.

    a. press the Windows key + X.

    b. click on Device Manager.

  • Seagate Plus backup does not connect

I have two backup Seagate Plus external hard drives that won't connect to Windows 7 x 64 in Fusion 5.0.3. I think that it worked in Windows 8, but I deleted the virtual machine to decommission 7. Ouch!

The device "drive_name (backup Seagate RSS + BK)" could not connect to its ideal host controller.

Running on MacBook Air 2012 mode in "USB 2.0". Any ideas?

    -Ivar

The only solution is to force the Protocol to USB 2.0 via a hub.  This is a known issue.

FWIW, USB 3.0 has a lot of questions on Mac, so merging is probably as combat Apple bugs.

    Hello

I recently bought a hard drive Seagate Wireless Plus. When I connect the hard drive to my computer, it recognizes it's ok and I downloaded movies, music, etc. on him. However when I connect said HDD on my TV and select the media browser, it comes up with the message "no removable disk is connected.

I looked online but I could not find an answer for my problem, but I noticed a lot of people talking about the format of the hard drive. The hard drive is underway in the Windows NT file system format.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

There are known limitations when connecting TVs USB hard drives:
-HDD format is one of them: FAT/FAT32 should work, NFTS (depending on model) probably not
-in the manual for this model, only the USB keys are hard disks mentioned, none (which require an external power supply).
USB drives are USB - bus-powered and therefore does not usually cause trouble, while external power supply used by hard drives can lead to problems, this device is not recognized.

In short: there is not that you can do, in addition to changing the USB device. You can try with the FAT32 format first, but with some probability that also won't work, except for the fact that FAT32 is supported only up to a certain size of drive.

  • I/o error - cannot backup to Seagate «of TB external HARD drive»

Former title: cannot backup to Seagate «of TB external HARD drive»

I thought I could use native W7 backup to create a system image on a HDD Seagate 2 TB or less. I get an IO error. I know of 3 to 4K sector disks.

    What is the solution?
    Malcolm Bolton

    Hi Malcolm,

If you use a drive logical sector of a size other than 512 bytes, Windows system image backup and restore operations can fail with 0x8078002A error code

I suggest you to go through this article for more information:

Before you continue, I suggest you to create a system restore point.

  • What is an I / Q error? This occurs with the backups using external hard drive SeaGate

We have two external hard drives; a 3Terabyte (don't know how it) Seagate and another whose name escapes me. On the Seagate, I get the message: backup did not complete due to I / Q error. What is I / Q error and how to fix this? If all goes well, not a complicated process.

Thanks for any help. Hope I selected the areas to fix this, below.

    Fred, SR.

    Win7 64 bit, Office 2010

    Hello

I assumed that by I / Q error you mean error e/s? Run chkdsk on the drive Seagate:

Start > Search bar > type cmd right click and select run as administrator

High CMD should now be open, type the following:

    CHKDSK x: /r

x involves the reader of your letter, so if your hard drive in question is the letter c, it would be:

    CHKDSK c: /r

Restart the system and allow to run chkdsk.

    Kind regards

  • External hard drive (Seagate) not readable after the ejection using Thunderbolt cable

Not sure where this question fits as this seems to be a Thunderbolt cable problem but here goes...

I have 4 TB Seagate Backup Plus external drives for archiving with two drives - backup A and B backup - and two interfaces, a basis of love at first sight and a standard basis of USB3.

Using the basis of love at first sight that I backed up to 1.5 TB of data on a Mac logged to A disk and ejected from backup format. When I reassembled A backup to verify the data Finder says the drive is not a recognizable car and I had to reformat. I thought that I must have crashed head or something like the disc was still running when I pulled it off the base of love at first sight. When I got tired to reformat the drive in disk utility only 500 GB of the 4TB were available for formatting, so I thought that I've certainly got to have damaged it.

Then I saved my 1.5 TB of data to a second drive Seagate Backup Plus (backup B) but when I eject this drive (this time I waited to stop and pulled the power over the base before you remove the disk) and then lift the drive that the same error came in the Finder. Suspecting it was the Thunderbolt interface I swapped backup to the base of the USB3 B and all the data is there! I checked A backup and even if she had to be reformatted this time all the 4 TB of capacity was available.

I also have a Rugged Lacie 2 TB drive with a Firewire interface and it seems to work just fine so maybe the Thunderbolt Apple cable or Seagate sight base. I don't have a second Thunderbolt cable to test with at the moment.

As a secondary issue readers are not run down after eject either. The heads are parked, but readers continue so I have to pull the power and wait that it happen down before I can remove basic USB3 disks or love at first sight. This problem, even if it's embarrassing, I can live with. In the foreseeable future I'll use the basis of the USB3.

Everyone knows about this problem before? It sounds really weird.

I can only give you my opinion of WD boxes and I'm afraid that's not good. My experience with WD boxes have always been bad. My suggestion is to try another TB cable and see if that's it, if not then try to connect another device to your iMac Thunderbolt and test to see if it is the iMac, which I doubt it is. If this isn't the cable or the iMac, then you know that it's the condom. If the disks are recoverable from the speaker, remove them and get a TB of high-quality speaker. My vote goes to OWC (www.macworld.com) pregnant Thunderbolt.

  • What is a good backup drive

My Seagate Free Agent GoFlex Home cratered on me backup.  What is a good backup drive to replace it with?

I use WD My Passport on x 6 Mac without issue for backups Time Machine and CCC clones, these are bus-powered readers.

I have also used a WD My Book World Edition II nas drive but have just been crossed to a Synology Diskstation in after the use of this brand to work as a file server.

  • sleep of the iMac, don't eject backup drive does not correctly

I get a message that my backup drive is not ejected properly, what concerns me greatly. I get this message when my iMac wakes up after sleeping, and the player has not been removed or disconnected or anything. It's an old USB 2.0 Seagate GoFlex drive.  Is there little sleep setting, such as turning off hard drives, the cause? Or is it just time to move my old faithful to a 3.0 version backup disk?

I would like to launch disk utility > first aid on the disc to make sure she's ok. How old is the drive and how it is formatted?

  • How can I be sure that all the pictures selected for export (all 1600) have been exported to my backup drive (before I remove them on the Mac)

I want to be sure that all of my 1600 + photos and movies were actually exported to the Seagate backup drive that I installed on my MacbookAir. How can I know it?

If they have been exported to a single file on the EHD?  And if you have exported them should have exported them as "Original unmodified" in order to get the original video files and not a jpeg thumbnail.

The best solution, if the Seagate HD is formatted for OS X Extended (journaled) is to save the photo library so that you keep both both original and edited, all projects and metadata (keywords, titles, faces, places, etc.).

  • NETGEAR N300 Wi - Fi DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem Router (C3000) sees the backup HD Seagate but don't transfer

V1.01.11 firmware, OS is Windows 10

I bought the cable Modem Wifi Netgear N300. Except for the external hard drive Seagate (backup Seagate more 5 TB desktop external hard drive with 200 GB of Cloud Storage & Mobile Device backup USB 3.0 (STDT5000100)), all my devices connect to it without problem. However:

1.) when I have the hood upwards the Seagate external hard drive, the genius of Netgear he sees, but says that the drive has 0 bytes available.

(2.) that's why I can't back up by using the backup program WIndows 10 but

(3.) I can "manually" drag files from my PC to the Seagate HD (the PC is connected to the modem router cable via wifi.)

4.) when I connect the Seagate HD with a USB cable to the computer, the backup works.

It's frustrating because I want to use the Seagate HD as a backup for some of my devices and I want the devices to send their data or the Netgear router.

Can someone help me? It seems important that Netgear genius sees the HD Seagate but think it has no place.

I answer my own question (!) but is the answer that the HD 5 t is not compatible with the cable modem Netgear router? See:

  • Issues of encryption on external drive

    Hi all

Been a while on here and that's all changed so forgive me if I ask a question has been asked before.

I have a Macbook Air with El Capitan running. I have an external hard drive that I use for backup and the media and there are 2 partitions and carry media1 & backup1. Today I decided that I would like to encrypt my backups on the partition. During the process, it has failed with an error message. I don't remember what he said. Later however, he said that the score was not recognized and I wanted to initialize. Also my Media1 partition was all messed up showing the names of the folders but nothing inside and wrong icons etc.

I thought I had wiped or corrupt it. I rebooted and removed and reconnected etc.. Same message every time. Disk utility (which is horrible now) couldn't do anything for me. I was resigned to the fact that she was ruined. But then I disconnected the hard drive and plugged on my work iMac which is still ongoing Yosemite and it is mounted as usual, everything is still there! I am relieved, of course, but when I plug in my laptop does the same thing again, cannot recognize etc. So now I can't see any content on my laptop, but my office is very well.

I ran a complete repair hard disk in disk utility on my iMac and the two mount very well and I can see everything, but when I put it on my laptop, same error message "the disk you inserted is not readable by this computer.

Someone has ideas about how to work on my laptop again?

    Wow the answer here!

Anyway if anyone reads this and has a similar problem, I solved it. I went FileVault and disabled encryption on my main hard drive. Once I restarted my external drive was still legible. I have encryption turned on and everything is fine. It seems if you have your hard drive encrypted, you cannot encrypt your external, or at least that's what caused it in my case.
