  First of all, please note that what you were doing was * not * a system restore. System Restore is a * Windows * function restores Windows and has nothing to do with your files.

  What you were doing was the recovery of the system provided by the manufacturer of your computer. That puts shaped windows in car and renstalls hard on it. You probably can't get your files back.

  Allow me to mention something else. Your question indicates that you do not have a regular backup of your important files. If this is the case, you are playing with fire. Even if you never make a system recovery, it is always possible that a hard disk crash, the user error, close to love at first sight, virus attack, even stolen computer, can result in the loss of everything on your drive.   If the "file" looks like a zip file, then probably do not unzip you the contents but Explorer to browse to the zip file.

  Make sure you unpack the catalog.

  Since you've reinstalled windows, you will need to re - install applications once again, you will be lucky (if you format the drive) data on your computer. You remember that location, it was in my documents? If yes it just open C:\Documents and settings and locate your old username, you will find your old desktop, Favorites and Documents.

  Installation of recovery disk would format the whole HDD (!) which means you n t need to delete anything before starting the installation of the recovery disc! Recover disc remove everything!
